I throughly enjoy getting my hair cut here whenever I am in NYC. Gabriel is a highly skilled professional who goes to great lengths to ensure you get the haircut you want. The atmosphere in the shop is warm and welcoming. Prices are incredibly good for the quality of service provided. Could not recommend more!

I get my hair cut once a week and a hot towel shave. Gabriel and crew do a great job and are the best barbers in the neighborhood. It’s always a great experience and he has fair prices.

Amazing haircut — they know what to do with your hair, especially Asian hair. I was walking past the shop one day after getting a horrible fade haircut at another barber around the corner when he called me out. Safe to say that I made the right decision in going here ever since.

My worst haircut ever. I was serviced by a lady (not Alex), she didn’t know how to give a scissor haircut, was very sloppy using the scissors, and couldn’t even a hold a comb properly without dropping it. She used the trimmer pretty randomly, gave me a trim cut and asked if this length is okay. (Now I can’t go back can I?). Haircut was very uneven and in the middle of the haircut she was clueless and handed over to Alex who tried to fix the haircut a bit. In the end, one side was cut by the lady and another side by Alex. Worst and weirdest haircut experience ever. I usually go to 101 barber which was closed early and I really needed a haircut so I walked around the corner of 101 and Amsterdam to this place. I will have to go again to my usual barber to fix this haircut!For reference, I have never had any problem with just a regular neat and clean haircut without having to guide the barber but this was such a bad experience that I just gave up. Good thing that this place doesn’t even show up on Google if you search “barber shop near me” unless you are standing right next to it. Never going again anyway.

I’m new in the neighborhood and I think I’m gonna be a regular of this barber shop. Alex does his job very well and with passion, also, he’s a cool guy and you can talk about anything while he’s cutting your hair and beard. Keep it up.

I recently started going to Alex because my last barber was too far for me to travel. Since going to him I have had several compliments from friends who tell me I look sexier and younger since going to my newly found haircutter friend.Not only is Alex talented, but he is a joy to be with and pretty cute to. This was my first time here, and after the pandemic forced closure it was great to find a barber open with no lines. It was very professional, and offered me everything requested to be safe. Quick check of my temperature, disposable mask, hand sanitizer. The haircut was really good, and including the tip was cheaper than other places around there. Highly recommended

Went for both a haircut and beard trim a few hours ago. I have also previously gone here, but refrained from writing a review until I could see the performance a few times, in order to make the review a proper one.First, the haircut was, and I can state this with confidence, the best that I have ever gotten. Gabriel asked questions prior to beginning the cut so that he could properly ascertain my preferences, and it only took him a few short questions to completely understand something that I had admittedly been trying in vain to explain to previous barbers for as long as I can remember.Second, the beard trim began as the aforementioned did, with a few short questions, and the result was exceptional. I have to maintain a properly trimmed beard because I work in a professional setting, and I strongly believe that I now have a professional look that I can confidently embrace. Most importantly, both sides of my face are even, a point Gabriel really stresses, and which, surprisingly, is often overlooked elsewhere.Lastly, the service was remarkable. The shop only uses top quality products which are in line with both the ever-progressing field of health standards and consumer well-being. For example, the aftershave lotion contained no alcohol, a point which Gabriel himself expressed. I wont regurgitate a litany of products and chemical additives, but you can rest assured that what is used here is superb.Glad that I finally found a place I can relax in and not worry about how I appear afterwards, because I know that my appearance is assured to improve. The conclusion meets expectations, the price is wonderful, and the service is outstanding.

I don’t normally write reviews but this places deserves it, Alex is one of the best barbers I have ever met. The skill and talent this man has is incredible. He’s very friendly and comforting towards new clients. He listens to everything you tell him about the way you want your haircut. He also gives advice on how you would like to style your hair or even keep it healthier. Alex has been my barber for about 2 years now and I’ve never been unsatisfied with my cuts.

Alex and his son Gabriel run one of the best barber shops on the upper west side.. offering an old-fashioned lather and razor shave complete with hot towels.. if you’ve never had one it’s a pleasure worth giving to yourself once in awhile, as it can certainly elevate your mood!

Gabriel thinks he’s a comedian but he actually is a very good barber! He’s my goto guy. He also cuts my son’s hair and it’s the only one that meets his mother’s exacting approval. I recommend him highly.

Ive been going to Alexs Barber shop for close to a year now and Would highly recommend them to anyone in the area. This is an excellent family ran establishment both Alex and Gabriel are fantastic Barbers who are well versed in scissor cuts as well as experts when it comes to hot towel shaves. If youre looking for a new barber you just found him.

Its an old school barber shop, no gimmicks. Depending on when you go youll find Alex, two younger gentlemen, and a younger and older lady. Never all at the same time. Ive had my hair cut buy all of them at one point or another, and they are all very qualified. If your looking for a more traditional cut Alex is your guy, for a more modern look go with the younger guys. Otherwise they can each do it all, ask for the neck shave and if your like me trim the eye brows. Most of the complains below are about them being fast, yea they are but this is NYC and fast doesnt mean rushed. They are the only barbers Ive gone to that after your done styling your hair, they go back over to cut any of those stubborn hairs that just stick up no matter what you do. If you dont engage them in a conversation they dont bother you which, is great for me because I like to close my eyes and relax. They instead talk to each other in theyre language which is nice to listen to. Over all this is a great place to get a fast cut respect the guys and they will respect you. Next time you go back they will remember you and the service gets even better. Support you local businesses dont let the chains take over.

Best staff on the upper west side I come here at least twice a month for a fade and a shave top notch cut always on point their old fashioned shave is the best I’ve been to several barbers around Manhattan not all them do straight razor shaves well I love it so I found Alex’s barber shop and gave it a try the best of the best try them out you won’t be disappointed

I’ve been living in the upper west side for about several years, I also have been going to a barber near my office (Hell’s Kitchen) but today I casually walked by when I saw a young gentleman wave at me and said come in well I am loyal to my barber but I went into Alex’s barber shop to get a hair cut because I had family flying in I can’t have them looking like a mess lol so I had a barber named Gabriel he’s was nice quick and efficient his haircuts are the best cuts I’ve ever gotten anywhere he listens carefully to what I asked for and within 10 min I looked like a new man I highly recommend this place it’s very clean atmosphere looks better then what a barber shop should lookLike, finally I feel like a nice vibe while getting a haircut UPDATE covid 19 clean and sterilized they wear masks gloves place looks clean and barbers are amazing friendly

Same issue a number of other people seem to have had. Asked for a mid skin fade and was told You cant/shouldnt have a fade like that. I was a bit perplexed, but proceeded to let him cut my hair. Ended up with a buzzcut, which looked fine, but no where close to what I requested. Ive been to a few shops and Ive never been straight up denied a request.

Worst haircut I’ve ever had. I asked for an 8 on top and got a 4, maybe a 6 at the most. The fade was not blended in properly. The haircut was very rushed.

Horrible experience! Basically i am bold at the moment, and just on top of my head I have a bird nest! I can’t believe this happened! The son who cut my hair he said I look like Kim Jong-un after he cut my hair!!! Charged me $38!

I am a woman and I know what a fade is! These barbers here do not know how to do fades on a haircut. My son’s lower portion of his head looks bald then top portion is dark. There’s no transitioning to a fade!!!! This man spent 10 minutes then says “okay I finish now do you want massage” my son’s haircut was 30+ forced tip rounded to 40 dollars. Don’t come here go else where. If i’m going to pay $40.00 for my son’s haircut then I expect refreshments, a robe, and a buffet after the haircut. Freaking ripoffs never again!!

I will be going back. *EDIT: Went in for a cut and beard trim. Cut was ok but he butchered my beard. Didnt do anything close to what I asked for. Not going back.

The staff here are very friendly and do a very good job and do not rush your haircut. Also for $18 you can get a good mens haircut which is pretty cheap for the city.

Not a good experience. Alex, I assume, cut my hair impatiently and too short on top all the while incoherently mumbling. I had to go back to complain after I got home and discovered that my neck was BLEEDING from his cheap razors and sloppy technique. After I called him out on it he cowered and tried to bulls*#t me about how it wasnt his work even though HE JUST SHAVED MY NECK. He just kept saying Not my work! Not my work!I wouldnt go there unless you feel like getting ripped off by a con artist.

I feel this place is highly underrated. Just dont move around and its amazing.

It took four minutes exactly for the this guy to rudely cut my hair. I specifically told him no fades!!! I said it two to three times and he did just that. I was furious but kept my cool. He moved through the rest of my head like a mad man and then just stopped. It was over. Save your money, total disaster in the making.

Just What I Needed.A Good Ole Fashioned Barbershop!I was in town for a holiday weekend and suddenly learned I needed to be in a brief business meeting and I had to get a fast, Shape Up!Right around the corner was, Alexs Barbershop.Three barbers were busy at work. The 2nd/Middle Chair (Cant Remember His Name?) quickly readied himself for me and got me prepared for my day in no time at all tending to my haircut, eyebrows and goatee. Some tricky areas--his listening were skills are exceptional.Considering, he had no experience with my head, he did an superior job and I couldnt be happier.My only regret? Im a visitor and cannot go to him every three weeks! 

The fastest haircut in my life (was honestly about 10 minutes). The guy (I assume not Alex himself) seemed really grouchy and uncaring. After buzzing around the ears and back, then chopping twice at the fringe, he asks Ok?. Maybe because I mentioned I was a tourist, they thought it wasnt necessary to put much effort in. I would recommend going somewhere friendlier.

A lady cut my hair once and she did a great job. I returned a month later and Alex welcomed me. He chopped my hair literally in less than 5 mins. I told him not to rush but he did not even listen to me. I had to go to another barber after that because he did a terrible job.I do NOT recommend this place.

Good haircut and there fast

After work I went to get a haircut from Alex to maintain my (payot) which is a religious haircut worn by religious Jewish men. Alex the elder barber had the audacity to charge me $40.00 when sissor haircut is $20.00 + tip. He kept enforcing me to pay him $40.00 in our mother tongue, but I said i can’t. Also keep in mind haircut was 10 minutes and one of my side pony tails is shorter than other side. I am extremely upset at Alex and he kept bribing me with a free massage which I declined several times.

Alexs song Gabriel has cut my hair every three weeks for several months. He understands how I like my hair and get its right each time.

I live around the area and I thought I try this barber shop. I came with a full set of sandy blonde hair and left looking like Kim Jong Un. Horrific experience!!!! Soo bad I almost cried and barber was telling me I looked like Ivan dragon from the rocky movie then he said something to his son in Yiddish and said Donald trump.

They cut my hair, I asked to make it a little shorter, and in barely distinguishable grunts Alex told me that it would cost double because he would have to continue cutting my hair, even though it had only been 10 minutes. Then, once they saw me on the street and asked me why I hadnt come back, and when I told them, they were still salty about it. Remarkably rude and poor service

Its a barber shop. They cut my hair. They cut my toddlers hair. They dont charge much and do a decent job.[Edit 3 years later...]I definitely understated how much we came to rely on this shop. It doesnt matter who was there, they did a great job on my sons hair, and he isnt the easiest. They also always did a great job on my hair.Did the barbershop bat an eye when my 4yo demanded a bathroom, even though we only left home 5 mins prior? No. Were they patient when I forgot cash and went sprinting for an atm? Yes.Good place.
