After living here for two years, I strongly suggest you look at other apartment buildings. The good: the maintenance staff are fantastic! So nice, super friendly, and theres been a really short turn around any time Ive put in a maintenance request. The bad things I wish Id known prior to moving in: 1) I just lost my job due and have been extremely stressed and distracted lately. For the first time in over a year since living here, I forgot my laundry downstairs. I then learned about a building policy: laundry is thrown away without notice after 24 hours. It is not in the lease, but there is a sign on the opposite side of the wall I was not aware of. I cant replace many of the items that were thrown out, and I am REALLY heart broken. When I spoke to management about changing the policy or at least sending out a notice on the app residents have, I was gaslighted and they even tried to blame the maintenance staff [who are just doing their jobs and enforcing managements policies]. But I do understand that at the end of the day this happened because of my mistake; I just wish the punishment had fit the crime and that I had been given a chance to correct my mistake. 2) The building has a bug problem. I cannot tell you the times Ive found LARGE centipedes crawling up my walls (attached a screenshot from a video I recorded during one occasion). It got so bad I had to call maintenance and have my apartment sprayed. Right now the issue is that I keep finding small winged gnats just in my bathtub and I dont know where theyre coming from because the bathroom window is bolted shut (though there are crevices around the window that things get through). (UPDATED 7/28/20: I unfortunately just found a cockroach in my bathroom. Photo included. 10/19/20: ants crawling from a small crack in my tub now). 3) The building is NOT rent controlled so expect your rent to go up the second year you live there like it did for me. If you ask to move to a cheaper unit in the building they will tell you that the price listed on your lease renewal is the lowest amount you can pay (so you CAN move, but you will pay more than what a new tenant would pay for that apartment and you have to pay the move-in fee again). 4) The oven temps are VERY off. Mine was off by about 20 degrees and I did not know this until I ruined many dishes and was forced to buy a thermometer. 5) The building decides when to turn the heat on and off and you cannot shut it off by hand. If you try to, it will make a loud clanking noises throughout the night and prevent you from sleeping. I spent most of the winter with the radiator on and a window open. This is pretty standard, but given there no window screens until the end of May, I had many unwelcome house guests stop in. 6) There is really poor circulation and the bathroom window is bolted shut so the moist air is forced to accumulate in my apartment which means the paint on my walls and ceiling is starting to crack and bubble. 7) They keep painting over everything between tenants rather than removing layers of paint first. Because of this my bathroom door does not fully close, nor do ANY of my kitchen cabinets. May not seem annoying at first, but trust me it will get annoying eventually. 8) The inside front-door doorknob of my apartment keeps falling off despite it being fixed. (Ive heard stories from other tenants about issues with doors, so its not about how theyre fixed/maintained and more about quality). 9) The kitchen faucet (in my apartment at least) is very flimsy and the type of faucet the installed makes it really hard to wash larger items. 10) The walls are VERY thin and the doors are even thinner. When Im in the hallway, I can usually hear a lot more than I think people are aware of. Let me reiterate that I am quite and keep to myself; I’m the type that doesnt complain if my order is wrong because I don’t want to be a bother. So the fact that I’ve been pushed to write this should speak volumes.
If I could talk to the Miguel of a year ago, I know exactly what I would say: “Yes, go with them, it’s the best decision you can possibly make. Don’t even doubt it!”. By that time, I was looking for an apartment every single day, all day long. Of course, finding a place to live is a very important decision. I would have loved it in anyone would have told me how amazing living here would have been. I first arrived by the beginning of August 2018 and I’m still living here. 422 W Melrose St. truly is my home now. It has been the best decision I made!To begin with, I contacted with Pete K. He is an amazing professional and even better person. I was by then still living in my home country in Europe and he certainly made all the process for me to get my apartment easy and without complications. I signed the lease agreement and I officially had my apartment in Chicago without even being there. He really has been very helpful all this time I’ve known him, and he truly is good at his job: getting yourself a new home. Thank you, Pete, for all your time, help work and consideration. I’m certainly keeping your number just in case in the future I have to come back to Chicago! All this time I have had no problems at all. The building is extremely clean and tidy. I’ve never heard a single noise and everyone living her is very friendly and welcoming. Whenever I’ve needed the maintenance team, they have always showed up super quick and have efficiently and effectively helped any issue I might have had. They are true professionals and they do their work fast and well, so you don’t have any inconvenience. Now, I would like to extend my gratitude to Lolita, Eric and Jack, and all the other members of the team. Thank you very much for everything you’ve done for me, from helping with any issue to that smile when I got into the building after a rough day!As for the amenities, the building just went through a renovation and the main entrance looks just gorgeous, very elegant and welcoming. It’s a beautiful and well decorated space that always gets positive comments. The elevators have always worked perfectly fine and I have never had to wait at all. Everything works very efficiently around here! The laundry room is very spacious and well equipped. There’s always enough washing and drying machines for everyone in the building and I’ve never had nor heard of any issues with them. Furthermore, as I was saying earlier, the apartments are very comfortable, quiet and well equipped. The heating systems works amazing and never had any problem at all. What I really appreciated was the fact that they take very seriously insect issues. Same can be said about odors. Never have I smelled anything funny or weird. They really keep the building extremely clean and tidy. Congratulations for such a wonderful work! Finally, I would like to mention the administrative team, specially Katherine S. Whenever I’ve needed them, they’ve always been responsive, quick, effective and true professionals. They try their very best to make your stay as comfortable and easy as possible and they really make it happen. They are excellent at making feel at home even if you are very away from home! Thank you team for making this experience so great and for always having been there for me with a smile willing to help me with anything I’ve needed! So, Miguel from the past, don’t even think about it anymore and go with Wirtz!
