This center refused to provide any follow up service for a surgery they perfomed last week. We contacted them concerned that our pet might be bleeding internally (it was a stomach surgery) and they never returned ANY of our FOUR calls. We eventually showed up at the clinic where they wanted to charge us another $200 to check him out. Ridiculous. and, I believe, illegal. Now they tell us they arent sure if they put dissolvable stitches in or not?? how TF are they not sure?? Do they not document their procedures? Im sure my itemized bill will show a charge for sutures...will they just pick one and put it on the bill? Or did they do it on purpose so they could then charge for stitch removal (which should be bundled with the surgery charge!). Very unprofessional. Very dissatisfied. Will never go there again.

I am over 55 and remember when vets kind of had a specialty. Now they are trying to charge three times as much. We are too pressured into going to these specialists. I have heard of a regular vet quoting a price 300 percent lower. We need to be able to sign a waiver of specialist. With the help of my primary care physician I was able to save some money. Dr. Barrett is the best eye doctor in the world when you combine experience. Their equipment was not effective for my dog so I am going to attempt to return to regular clinic prices, which is creating a lot of unnecessary stress.

I see that ones experience with SA Vet Spec & Emer Ctr does rest on your ability to afford their care for your pet. In an emergency, things are stressful, emotional and you are hoping for a good outcome for your pet. I have had two dogs cared for under emergency situations. In the first case, our Chesapeake-Chow mix had something that affected her nervous system/brain. This happened while both I and my husband were traveling out of the country. Fortunately, my parents were able to get her to the emergency center on Ft Lowell. They tried a couple of treatments, were able to help her pain and discomfort, but unfortunately, she died on the morning my husband returned. The staff called me minutes after they found her dead, and were very kind to me, answering all my questions and letting me know what to do next. The second emergency, was another dog who had a bad case of Canine IMHA, who nearly died, but the staff were able to stablize her to the point that she came home and was then under the care of our usual vet. We also recently had our lab mix female treated for bone cancer at the Oncology office. In all three cases, there were associated costs with the care (and in the one case, the cremation). They informed us in advance of the costs. We were very fortunate to be able to afford the cost of those treatments, and yes, I understand not everyone can do that. But I have never had anything but professional and kind and compassionate treatment by the staff. I would and will come to them when needed in a heartbeat.

This is the best veterinary clinic I’ve ever been to. Knowledgeable doctors that listen to you and address your questions, and obviously care about your pet. The doctor I saw spent almost thirty minutes personally examining my dog, and then walked me through his thought process, and answered every question I had. I can’t believe there are any negative reviews. All the negative reviews I see on here have to do with money. Both times I’ve had to go to this emergency vet they did everything they could to keep my bill low. They told me which regular vets to go to for the best prices, they never tried to overcharge me. Animal medicine isn’t like human medicine. There’s no insurance to hide the true costs of what you’re getting, and medical procedures cost money. Everyone in here saying they don’t care because they wouldn’t give you a service when you couldn’t pay, that’s ridiculous. The staff at this clinic care very much, and I could tell they do the best they can to provide excellent care. It’s not their responsibility to give your animal free health care just because you can’t pay, and it’s unreasable to expect them to. Be an adult and recognize you need to pay money for services given.

Ill admit, that I have not actually been here BUT I called for an estimate. As to how much it would cost to be treated there. I needed to budget my money.MY 4.5 year old dog was diagnosed with a TRANSMISSIBLE VENEREAL TUMOR back in January. She had puppies before I adopted her from PACC. They did not know she had it prior to me adopting her and getting her spayed. She had bleeding problems for months and would not play like she should. After paying off car repairs, new tires, a broken wrist, portacath reversal surgery, cooler repairs and a vet bill for a dead cat, I finally had her diagnosed. My vet removed the tumor for nearly $700. He said my dog needed chemo. He recommended a dog cancer doctor, Mary Kay Klein, DVM, (plus other degrees she held: DACVIM, DACVRO).Ive had Breast Cancer not long ago, so I know first hand how chemo feels. I really didnt want my dog through it. I called this Vet group and inquired about the cost of chemo for my dog. I was told it would cost over $100 to walk in the door. The lab fees would cost a bunch and the Vincristine chemo shot was $400! The dog would need at least 4 shots!I live in Marana so it would take a hour EACH WAY to get my dog treated. I live on a limited income. I cant afford to pay nearly $700 per week on my rescue dog! By the time it was over, it would cost me nearly $3,000 ! With that, I decided to not give the dog chemo after all due to the cost. My other dog has Valley Fever. That, I can deal with. Two weeks after surgery, she was leaping and bouncing all over the yard, she felt so good after that! I had never seen her play like that before. I felt bad that I could not afford the chemo. I decided that I would just let it ride until the dog got worse and figure out whether I can afford the surgery again.Recently, (7/20), the dog was bleeding again. PACC told me that the VINCRISTINE shot only costs $3 ! I WAS SO MAD THAT THIS VET CHARGED 13,000 PERCENT MORE THAN WHAT IT SHOULD COST! SHES TAKING ADVANTAGE OF POOR PEOPLE TO PAY FOR ALL THOSE COLLEGE DEGREES SHE HAS! She makes it so unaffordable, that poor people have to watch their dog suffer, or put them down. IM SPITTING BULLETS, IM SO MAD! I hope she can sleep at night, cause I wont be.

Dr. Klein and her staff were wonderful and treated our dog with loving care during the sessions as well as the follow-up visits. My dog loved seeing the staff here even though it was a difficult time for her. All the treatment options and pricing were thoroughly discussed and nothing were out of the ordinary in term of standard oncology care. The people here truly do what they do because they care. Sadly, the prognosis was never good for our dog and after 7 months of fighting, and we let her go. I actually took my dog here a couple of years ago to put him to sleep but never wrote a review until now. First, we were very grateful that this place is open 24/7. The staff was very courteous with us and were very sorry that we had to put our dog to sleep. He was very old and had several issues. They let us into a room with him for as long as we needed and treat him with love and dignity. A couple of weeks later we received a card signed by the staff letting us know how sorry they were that our Patches had to go. That was beautiful. We also purchased the paw inscription on clay and it was beautiful too. They took care of the incineration and called us when it was ready for pick up. Im so sorry some other reviews didnt have a good experience but I can say ours was great and will take our other 2 dogs whenever we need veterinary services.

Our beloved cat of 10 years suddenly was ill. We first went to the nearest vet but were quickly referred to the Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center. The speed at which they began to immediately treat our girl and the quality of care for both me and the cat were exceptional. She was in very bad condition, and the doctor took a lot of time with her running necessary diagnostics (all covered by the intake/stabilization fee) before speaking to me about her condition. The doctor was supportive, kind, caring and patient. She took a long time with us, asking for our input on our cats behavioral history as well as further details about the sudden illness. She took her time in listing and describing the main possible reasons for her sudden illness. And she very gently and sensitively gave us the bleak prognosis. She gave us a few treatment options, but was very forthcoming with the high likelihood that it was our girls time. We chose to keep her on life support a little longer, but within the hour she was gone. The entire staff at the clinic was so warm and caring and so patient during this extremely frantic and heartbreaking time for us. From the beginning of her intake to even several days after losing her, the hospital staff has been very supportive and understanding. Despite being busy, all of my questions have been kindly and thoroughly answered. This is the first pet I have ever lost, and I am very grateful that we did everything that we could at Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center. It has been important to us that she was given the best opportunity to live and was able to pass over with her loved ones nearby in dignity. Thank you all for your help.

I would highly encourage you to look around at other emergency vet clinics if possible. I had a horrible experience. For starters, they didnt notify me that my cat had a severe urinary tract infection until 5 days after they tested him. I had to bring him back in due to his condition worsening because he wasnt diagnosed in a timely manner. He had a severe reaction to Clavamox, the antibiotic they prescribed and he became so sick I didnt think he was going to recover and was preparing myself to put him down. The day I picked him up he had dried blood and feces all over him. Its never been characteristic of my cat to be scared and act up when he goes to the vet, so that really concerned me that he may have mistreated him in some way. In addition, they misplaced my cats collar. It took three days for them to return my call about the collar and tags and they said they didnt have it. I stopped by in person later on to speak with the manager and ask them if they would replace it or reimburse me for it. I let them know I payed around 25 dollars for it, even though it was likely more with the seperate engraved tag. They said nobody was available and they would get back to me. The same associate called me back several days later that week and said that they acctually did have it. When I stopped by to pick it up, the associate at the front desk accused me of trying to get more money than what the collar was worth..in front of two customers dropping off their dog. Ive never had a worse customer service experience. I expected their care to reflect the fact that they understand the value and importance of animals to their owners and families. If my cat had another emergency Id rather take my him across town to a different 24 hour clinic than ever bring him back here again.

I had a great experience taking my dog to the Ft. Lowell location of the Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center. My dog had eaten an oatmeal raisin cookie the pervious night and after exhibiting some symptoms the next day, the Animal Poison Control Center recommended I take him to an emergency vet immediately. My primary vet recommended Southern Arizona Veterinary. Upon arrival, the receptionist was very friendly and after filling out some paperwork, I was seen immediately by a vet technician. I had a few minute wait to see the vet while she reviewed my case with the Animal Poison Control Center. While raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs, the vet was very calm as she explained the situation, helping me to keep calm. The vet recommended blood work to catch possible kidney failure. They have a lab on sight, so they completed the blood work and had the results in 15 minutes. I told the vet that my dog has anxiety when kept in a crate and will lick his paws (which can cause infection), so he should only be kept in a crate with a cone. Turns out, while waiting for the lab results they never put him in a crate - they just kept him on a leash with them! They thoroughly went over the results and discharge care, and answered all my questions. Everything looked normal! However, they said if he exhibits any more symptoms within the next 24hrs, I can bring him back and it will be covered under the initial examination fee.The receptionist, technician, and vet were all very kind and worked well with my dog, who is not crazy about vets. If you have a pet emergency, I would highly recommend this vet.

Dr. King is absolutely terrible! My chihuahua had been in active labor and pushing for 6 hours and this vet told me she was still 12 hours away from birthing. She gave birth 10 minutes after we left, in our truck on our way to another pet hospital.Dr. Kings knowledge on whelping dogs is devastatingly inaccurate that at certain points during our visit I questioned wether she was an actual vet. She was cold, unfriendly, she took long pauses after our questions and gave us glaring looks..more than half the time our questions were met with silence. I tried to joke with her to lighten the mood and she wanted no part in making nice. She said that my dog squatting and pushing was nesting behavior! She also said active labor doesn’t start until you see a sack coming out of a dog (WRONG pushing IS ACTIVE labor!)..If you don’t see a sack after 1 hour of pushing then you have a big problem. When I said I was concerned that my dog couldn’t pass the puppy (due to having a large head) and may need a c-section, she said that if SHE does a c-section then she DOESN’T LET THE PUPPIES LIVE!’ Shocked, I asked her to clarify and she didn’t respond, just more glaring. I asked her to please tell me what she means by ‘let them live,’ and she said, puppies don’t survive c-sections which is not only false BUT that’s not what she meant! Second vet strongly disagreed and said a dog pushing for 7 hours is a sign of a serious and immediate medical problem. Before seeing her we waited an hour and a half in a lobby, they took our dog in the back to put her in a dark room because I ‘was interfering with her labor.’ My dog would stop pushing out of my presence, which was an issue at home as I had to leave the room several times and my dog stopped to follow me. I told them this which is why I wasnt comfortable with my dog being left alone and they disregarded my concern, bulldozed over most of my concerns in general. The second pup was born in distress, not breathing, the placenta was dry and there was no blood in the cord and the puppy was dehydrated (because the birthing process took so long)..fortunately we were in the care of actual qualified and knowledgeable professionals and they were on top of it and saved the pups life! She had the pup in front of 3 people with no problems, no dark rooms! And first one was born 10 minutes after she was back in my care. This women is an absolute nightmare human being. The hospital on ft Lowell is great...stay away from the one on broadway and prudence and run like heck if Dr. King is working. One last note: one bad apple spoils the bunch..this place had bad bad vibes all around. Jessica the receptionist was the only decent person I met that night, thanks Jessica!

The female veterinarian suggested we keep the cat there for a few days on an IV. We told her we couldnt afford it and how much would it cost to put him down. She said we made the right decision since he was in late stage liver failure. Then why make him suffer for a few more days except to line their pockets? My beloved dog died last night. I could not save him because of the extremely high prices. I am very sad and angry. Do not take your beloved animals here. The doctor seemed like she did NOT care for my dog. She said it was best to put him down or pay more than 5k. The prices were ridicously high. They kept pressuring me to make a decision and just gave me the option of euthenizing him or paying up front 2k and with the treatment prices could vary up to more then 5k. I had to put my poor baby down because he was suffering and I could not pay those high prices with a students bank account. The vet kept on babbling about the procedure and many things and I just interrupted her and told her to leave the room and give us some space. I expect more from a vet honestly. I wish I had had the time to take my baby to a good doctor but this was at night. This was the worst place to go. He was a morkie that was my son I treated him like it and I had him simce he was 4 weeks old and lived the last 2 year together . I walked in the office a mess, crying panicking and the first vet who came out to take Milo for treatment was kind and gentle with both of us . The lady in the front desk was nice and informative but the only thing I felt was a bit insensitive was the persistence of payment .I understand its a business and they couldnt treat him until they knew I had the funds. Which I didnt have the 3,000 for surgery. I wish there was a way they could offer payments. Maybe more loved ones wouldnt be put down due to finances But I knew they went beyond and did a xray because they said they saw the damage that was done to his organs, they didnt charge me for that !! Once they explained to me my options the vet said that euthanizing Milo would be the best option because he was suffering. They described in detail what steps we would take and she made me feel like I wasnt alone and during something traumatic like loosing a loved one there is an empty feeling. I was told to take all the time I needed with him and they did a paw cast and cut a lock of his hair because I loved his beautiful coat and she knew it. I am waiting for his ashes and received a card in the mail from the clinic with signatures and kind words .They sent a heart shape seedling to be potted so something with life could grow in the place of the pain. I would definitely recommend to anyone. . maybe there is something we could all do collectively - help raise money .Have some fundraiser and have a fund at this clinic for other families who cant financially afford treatment .Because the loss of a loved one, especially the loss of a furbabie is indescribable- I do not wish this on anyone else .

If you are like me, your pet is not only your family but your child. I see some of the less than stellar reviews and am quite surprised but then not given how emotional I am about my own fur baby. The experience had here, at this location was positive. My regular vet had referred me to Dr. Klien, during a series of two different types of tumor issues with my 9.5 year old pup. She implored me to make an appointment, given Dr. Klien is very difficult to get in to see -- as the wait can be 4-6 weeks. I took her advice and made the appointment, even though we were not quite sure what was going on at the time.Fast forward past an ultrasound, 2 separate surgeries -- one incredibly invasive -- and lots of unknown. I am so glad that I made this appointment. I found the offices to be clean, the staff incredibly kind and caring. To me, it was obvious they love animals here. In my particular case, my goal of seeing Dr. Klien was to give me a rundown in expert laymans terms everything that had been going on with my dog -- mostly the pathology interpretations of her cancer and what that meant to my dog and her future. The news I received was terminal, and not what I had hoped for BUT what I appreciated most was Dr. Kliens genuine focus on the quality of life for the animal. She gave me all the options possible with my case, with all the details of pros/cons and ultimately shared what I knew in my heart which was to just enjoy the time we have left. I appreciated her candor and her sensitivity in delivering these types of messages.I felt the price I paid for the visit was fair, to get this type of expert information and insight. She did let me know that once you are established and have that initial appointment that the re-check appointments are far more easy and quick to get into. I am guessing she has a lot of furry loved ones that she treats in Tucson. If you are needing an animal oncologist -- they hype is real, Dr. Klien is the real deal and there is a reason she is well respected by her peers and recommended.

I hate this place because Ive had many different visits to this vet with different dogs n all of them have died because of there high cost for services but recently was the worst we took our 1.5 year old blue nosed pitbull female family member in because she was having pain in her stomach area the vet took some labs n exrays n said everything was good with our dog but there was something wrong with her cause she wasnt having bowel movements so she said give her pumpkin which didnt work n turn I gave my dog a suppository which did work a little bit the first visit when all this was done was $645. N the vet said that she feel that we needed to fix /spade her asap n referee us to pet doctor n said that our dog was all set up for the surgery to take her up there right now so we did just that one day later they spades her n she came home telling us that there was no infection in uterus like the vet said n that. Th surgery went well less than 24 hours later my dog seemed like she couldnt hear commands or where she was at completely lost and then she had a sezier n panting non stop so we rushed her back to the Dr doctor who seen her first and they wouldnt do anything for our dog unless we paid up front 2000.$ first I told my kids n the vet to do what she needed to do to save our family member that Im driving back to Tucson n will be there with the money in hand in 4.5 hours the vet refused to do anything but ethinized our family member for the $200 cash my kids had on them so we did that with her advice we have no answers on what our family member died from or why any of this event even happened in our family we contacted a couple of vets on line n they said that the vet was in the wrong n weve should get an lawyer on our case so we did just that I want them closed up for doing business ever again please help me thx

Boo. Saw my rescue pit bull for an emergency laceration at the Ft. Lowell location. The wound was very superficial and could have been treated with suture glue. The veterinarian there ran a full CBC panel on my two year animal because she was worried about her liver values for the NSAID she was prescribing. Unfortunately, my clueless fiance had already authorized the procedure, but when I inquired about why blood work was being done to a two year old animal, I was met with defense and agitation from the veterinarian. She became rude and flustered and immediately started to cut me off and berate me about the stupid liver values (they came back normal, SURPRISE..). Go back to vet school and work on your people skills, lady. I will never be coming back here and I will definitely refer others to a clinic that knows what theyre doing.Source: CVT and pre-vet student knows more than the vet they have working there. BOO.

UPDATE on 10/13/16: Our Canon sweet boy golden retriever had VALLEY FEVER. After they wanted to remove a lung lobe all he needed was Fluconazole and he is now 100%. thanks for the call SAVS. YOU MONEY HUNGRY DISGRACE OF A VET. This is the Fort Lowell location.8/18/16 Please note: this is really about a certain Doctor (Dr. Bailey), than the hospital as a whole, but then again, they recently hired her. We were referred to SAVS from our local vet who claimed they could not do anymore for us at this time. In reality, all she had done for us was take x-rays and a blood test that cost us $700 and sent us out the door, but that review is following this one. We felt good the first time we called SAVS and were able to get in at 9am the next morning for a specialists appt. I mean we thought our 5 yr old golden only had a few days left the way our local vet was talking. So, we fight our way through the flood at 9am to get there only to be told we would not be seeing the Dr. we were suppose to..which came highly recommended. No, we got the new girl in town, Dr. Bailey. She comes in the waiting room greets our boy, good start. She seems to be listening to his past history and sharing her personal experiences with us...still going good. We all proceed to go to an exam room where she comes in with his x-rays and blood work results and gives us the cancer talk. Wow, that all happened so fast...we have not even diagnosed him and you are already talking about removing a lung lobe? Should have been my red flag to pay the outrageous $98 specialist fee and run out the door swimming for home.Well, now we are told, he is going to need an ultrasound and if his masses our near the wall she will take a biopsy. We are told it wont take too long, but it is really necessary. The tech comes in with the old price sheet. Ok fine, hes our son and we would pay anything, they must have seen us coming....$920. Along with that, please sign a DNR...we are now in tears and told they will call us when they are done. 4 hours slowly pass and we hear nothing, we have gone to lunch and eager to get our buddy back. We are told they have not started on the ultrasound and it should be done in a couple hours. So our son is still in the cage after you told us not to feed him in the morning and is in pain? Its now 3p and we head back to the specialists. We sit in that same waiting room and Dr. Bailey comes out says the ultrasound was clear (thank God!) and she did not do a biopsy. We go back into the room waiting for our son and she gives us our options. We could do a $2500 ct scan or we could test him for 2 fungals ($400) that he may have got from traveling. Of course, we choose the later..we might as well rule out somethings before we put this kid through anymore pain.At this time, there is a lot of in/out from Dr. Bailey and the tech and we really just want to see our boy. Finally he comes in ecstatic to see us, shaved and wet from the ultrasound. Along with the bad customer service who did not call and update us, they stuck it to us as we were billed for a $107 catheter that they did not use, but still had to charge us for.We go home, still with no answers, no diagnosis. Now this is the surprising part and it floored us--- Fast forward a week Aug 15th. We have waited for these fungal tests to come back so we can make an action plan...we get no call in the morning so we call twice to check in..we go through 20 minutes of holding to be told the Dr. will call us soon. We just want a negative or positive test result or did you forget we were your customers last week? After the service (or lack thereof) we would not let Dr. Bailey treat our goldfish.

I WILL NEVER GO BACK. My regular vet referred me to this place as my pup needed a ultrasound. We had previously done testing for cushings, and our doctor wanted to rule out liver problems or adrenal gland tumor. I didnt care for Dr. Shaws attitude at all. I take better care of my dogs than most humans care for themselves, and she tried to say that my dog had some muscle loss due to his diet! keep in mind THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME SHE HAD SEEN HIM! the dog eats yogurt and dog food in the morning and vegetable stew and dog food at night, yep, we cook for them! and he gets carrots, apples, celery, watermelon, cucumbers, and cauliflower for treats! Regardless, back to point, so then it becomes time for the ultra sound, and they refuse to let me go with my dog! She said why do you want to go with your dog? I said, CUZ HE IS MY DOG AND I AM GOING WITH HIM! he was already stressed out enough having to wait for an hour for the appointment! It would of only calmed him down for me to be with him! WE LEFT... AND THEY HAD BETTER OF TAKEN A GOOD LOOK CUZ WE WONT EVER IN THIS LIFETIME GO BACK!!!!! The worst experience I think I have had with any vet! think twice BEFORE YOU GO!!!

My dog came in for constipation and came out dead. They charged me $3,000.00 up front to treat him. At first it was $600 but then after about a half hour they needed me to pay another $2,400.00 up front to continue treatment. They drugged my boy up like crazy and just worked him over for hours doing enemas and his heart stopped after continuous assaults. The blonde vet is young and callous and my boy died in her care. The operation of collecting huge amounts of money up front should say volumes of what this place is about. Dont expect care here that is competent. Expect to get raped for money and then expect your pet may or may not make it. They simply DONT CARE and if they dont like you, they may kill your pet for fun. I really believe this blonde vet did kill my dog because I had a bad feeling and told her that I would hold her accountable if he died. And he did. The sad thing is with our beloved pets, the laws dont apply to these horrid operations as far as investigation and accountability and they know it. Stay far away if you love your pet. Go to the university is what Ive been told since but they are not open 24/7. PLEASE avoid this place if you can.LOOK AT GLASSDOOR FOR EMPLOYEE REVIEWS OF THIS PLACE!!!

Pet Info: Female, 10.5 week old boxer, purchased at pet store (I know... but it was absolutely worth it); emergency patient due to vomiting, diarrhea, and excessive weight loss; diagnosis - respiratory infection, coccidia, and giardiaOwner Info: Moderate spending budget, experienced dog owner, vet in familyI recently (9/3/2013) had to bring my puppy in for emergency care at SAVSEC. Both of the vets and the multiple staff members I met were fantastic. All were very knowledgable, kind, realistic, understanding, and thorough. Also, they not only care about your pet, but about you as a person as well--any pet owner should absolutely keep this in mind if you have the option of choosing the vet you regularly take your pet to. Im recently out of school, but have a well-paying job, so they worked with me to give the best and most thorough care they could without completely bankrupting me. Not to mention, I live 2.5 hours away, so after checking my puppy in to their emergency clinic at 11:00PM on a work night they gave me a 24-hour coffee shop recommendation and even called me during my drive home to let me know how my puppy was doing and check to see that I was still alive. They then called periodically throughout the week once she came home to make sure she was recovering well. For such an unfortunate circumstance, my experience with SAVSEC was beyond pleasant.

You really cant find a better place for specialty services than SAVS. We take our problem child DSH male with cornea problems and uveitis and other problems. Dr. Merideth is a board certified Ophthalmologist and a very nice doctor. I wont go anywhere else for specialty services.

My cat has been seen at SAVSEC four times since last fall for a chronic eye condition. Everyones been great with him even though he gets a little testy. One Saturday they stayed well past closing time to see him on an emergency basis, as I had to drive up from Sierra Vista. I only wish they were closer, as the long drive there is the only drawback.
