We had a wonderful experience with 808 smart cars. They have very reasonable rates. Doc was very professional and had us ready with keys in our hand in no time. Couldn’t have been a better car for the island neither, where others were trying to find a place to park in areas we could pretty much fit anywhere. Having the convertible top down made it extremely nice to take pics out the top to get a good shot while driving across the island. Also they get like 40 miles per gallon and it was only around $25 to fill up the tank. Definitely recommend and will use them again when we come back to visit.

Cockroach Infestation (dozen+ inside car).Staff at the front desk were very friendly, price wasnt too bad.However, after we rode around the whole day in the car, as nightfall hit a dozen+ cockroaches came out of all the nooks and crannies inside the vehicle. We were lucky that we decided to head back to Waikiki and park the car early.Informed it was a newer rental car. Needless to say it 100% needed to be bug bombed.Unfortunately no refund or compensation, the staff who lent the car out to us were very polite and apologetic about the situation. When we later called back about a refund a guy named Doc responded, and condescendingly told us -Cockroaches are everywhere on the island, my friend has a $500,000 condo and he deals with Cockroachesconstantly! ~~~ Oookayy? So youve told me what happened now what exactly do you want?!I was unsure if we saw Bedbugs along with Cockroaches, so that same night I had to stay up till 2am washing all of our clothes using the Hotels Laundromat.Looking through the other reviews, seems like the infestation was a one time occurrence and we just got unlucky. However, Docs personality is a clear indication of all the other negative reviews :/

Best purchase for a vacation in Oahu.Having a car is a MUST to travel to all the different beaches and attractions.And a SMART car helps with parking in all sorts of corners, zipping through narrow roads, and using only 8 gallons to travel ~350 miles.Do yourself a favor and get a convertible. The weather was perfect for top down driving.A+ service with a smile (under the mask) with Doc!And it’s in a convenient location!

We had a terrific experience! Doc was really helpful getting us set up. He explained everything thoroughly and gave us a detailed tour of the car. The car was ready to go as soon as we arrived from the airport.It was fun driving something so little. Parking was a cinch and we got great gas mileage, and everything fit in the surprisingly roomy trunk. Pick up and drop off in Honolulu was easy, too.But honestly, Doc made the entire rental experience memorable. Hes warm and friendly with a great sense of humor. It meant a lot to be greeted and helped by someone like Doc.

First, Doc was the one who initially helped us. I asked him about a price difference and he had an attitude and asked me “Really?” As if it was an inconvenience for him. Then while he was assisting us he was assisting another couple and accidentally gave us their paper work to fill out and we told him that that was not our paper work. He made an inappropriate joke that all white people look alike but were aren’t white.We had the car for 3 hours, we didn’t drive the car over 60 mph. We went to the dole plantation and when we got back to leave and started the car it made a loud pop noise and smoke started coming from the upper middle console. We called them at 12:04, it took a while to get a hold of someone neither location answered the phone until we eventually pressed 0 to hopefully get an operator the guy that answered the phone said he would call his right back and he didn’t so we called again. Called again at 12:25 Marie answered, she would call us right back after speaking with her boss and she got Brian right out to us right away. Honestly the experience with Marie made up for the entire entire with this company as a whole because she communicated effectively with us and was prompt in getting us the assistance that we needed. Thanks Marie and Brian for all your help! Doc seemed much friendlier when we went back to drop off the car.

Doc is the man. Came in right before Doc was about to close the shop and got the right car for my Hawaii trip. The rental experience is excellent and Doc had made everything as smoothly as possible. In and out within 30 minutes.Return was even easier. Doc just took a quick walk around and checked off last piece of agreement within 5 minutes. That’s all. Nice and easy. Love it.Btw, I got a standard Nissan sedan for my family. Doc made my day.

I cant say enough great things about Doc at the Hawaiian monarch location! hertz/dollar totally screwed us over and didnt have a sedan for us (even though we prepaid!) and Doc was able to help us get a cute little smart car right away. He saved our trip, and he is hilarious and friendly, as well. I also love that there is no huge deposit! Excellent experience and changed my opinion of these silly looking cars. I’m 6’6 so was a little hesitant renting this but I really didn’t want to have to worry about Parallel parking all over a crowded city. My expectations were exceeded. This little car has some good zip to it too and was super convenient no matter where we went on the island.I saw some negative reviews in regards to the owner (or maybe sales rep?) Doc. I can see how he might come off poorly to some people but I found he just has a sassy joking personality and liked him.Would recommend and use again.

One of the tour guide representatives referred us to this location for a hook up, which Doc did helped. Smart car was great for around Oahu & took us to the places we needed to be. At the end, we tried our best to clean the car & told us it’s not cleaned enough, whether to go clean it or charge us because they count “every single grain of sand”, which we ended up going back to the gas station to clean it to the best of our ability. TIP: If you rent the car to go to the beach, make sure you leave it spotless before returning it. Giving it 4 stars because car was great & good on gas milage.

I cannot recommend doing business with them. Doc was impatient and rude over the phone when he apparently felt that I asked too many questions, exclaiming youre lucky I have 4 daughters! Very patronizing. I think as a customer I have a right to ask questions to make an informed decision about how I am going to spend my money... I did make a reservation but had to wait almost an hour for the rental to arrive because they did not have one ready for the time that I had reserved. There was another customer who was there waiting for a rental reservation that was late as well. And they tried to charge me $30 cleaning fee for a few grains of sand.

DOC has a really bad attitude, and he is extremely arrogant and abrasive. His initial point of contact with the customer is horrible. He needs much better customer service training. I would explore other options in the future.

This place is out to steal your money! The only rude person I encountered in my entire week in Hawaii was “Doc” at the Niu street location. I would never recommend them. For the same price, after all the extra fees, such as $30 for about 15 grains of sand in the car, you can get a convertible from most rental places on the island. Use them at your own risk!

The car wasnt safe. First hour, it was ok, noticed a bit of a strain when it wanted to shift up. Once we were on North Shore it got worse and worse. It would suddenly downshift while cruising down highway. At stop signs, it would practically conk out and at times I was afraid I wouldnt get across intersection. We cut our trip short and prayed we would get back. We did but it took hours.Also, we got zero explanation about the parking. We were at the Kuhio location. They have 3 spots. If they have a cone in front of it, you cant park there. Since we arrived back after they were closed we had to park. It was $25. If you move cone and park in their spots, it is $25.Cannot recommend. The worst car rental experience I have ever had. Cannot recommend the car either if anyone would be crazy enough to get one. 101k miles and the transmission is going out.

My wife suggested we rent a smart car instead of a scooter or a moped for our trip. First thing first - if youre visiting the island and you need a ride for a day or two, rent a smart car, not a scooter. Heres why: you can legally drive a smart car anywhere but some scooter rentals require you to stay in the city limits, a smart gets you some air conditioning, a smart car is built to handle slow and fast traffic, it has a trunk so you can carry groceries/beach gear, and the convertible takes care of you no matter the weather. OKAY now for 808 Rentals - Kalani is the guy there at the rental desk when you walk up. He made everything so easy, was very courteous to us and went above and beyond to make sure we had a great rental. We love that guy. He gave us a map and some great tips for exploring the island. He really is great. Then, Vincent pulled a car around for us after it was fueled up and ready. Vincent was very courteous. In no time, my wife and I were cruising up the coast in a convertible smart car. They even let us borrow some snorkeling gear for free in case we wanted to go snorkeling. These guys are like the Chick-fil-a of smart car rentals. The choice to get a smart car was perfect - and it made a big difference to get to travel around at full speeds. 808 Smart Car Rentals was a godsend. Moral of this story: the wife is right.

First, be warned. When booking on the website their system will send you an confirmation email but that doesnt mean you have a car. I didnt find this out till I went to get the car at the front desk. When I got to the desk to get the car I listen to Doc explain to two separate groups the same thing. Both couldnt understand how the business operated like that and kept asking if they could reserve a car in the future. Doc, the employee at the desk, told them he didnt own a crystal ball. Meaning, you rent a car at a certain rate and that rate keeps running until you bring it back. They prefer you keep it because the rate is an additional 10-20 bucks more a day than you originally rented it for. So the takeaway for future renters is these people dont have any idea of their inventory of cars from day to day. They just book people and hope the cars come back. I just wanted one for 24 hours (I turned it back in in 19hrs) but was never asked once when I was bringing the car back.I reserved one and was lucky enough to be next in line for a car and double lucky that someone brought one back so I could drive it away from the shop without a bunch of wasted time.The business model is wacky and I am sure the employees get tired answering the same questions and dealing with upset people but they bring it upon themselves. Their way is not intuitive to anyone at all. The whole system is laughable.Secondly, the car. I had a convertible two seater and I enjoyed driving it around. But be forewarned the transmission (how this thing drives) is most likely not what you are used to. Its an automatic that drives like a stick shift. Doc did explain to just drive it regularly and it would learn my way of driving. I think that was a bunch of BS this thing isnt smooth in anyway. Shouldnt be a deal breaker for anyone but a friendly heads up.Third, make sure to make mental note of the rules they go over when renting. The most noteworthy is bringing the car back with anything in it... if they have to clean the car then its an additional $30. That includes sand from the beach!! SMH! Doc told me this was so they could turn the cars to other customers quicker... I laughed and almost walked away. Turn them over quicker???! Its a tiny smart car that takes 2 minutes for an employee to vacuum with a good shop vac. Expecting sand not to be left behind is also beyond ridiculous. I did find a vac at a gas station (Hele off Kapahulu Ave - it takes $1.50 in quarters) I am convinced they will hope you are running late to return the car or have other plans and just turn it in and they can charge you the $30. When I turned in the car, I specifically asked if the whole car was to standard and videoed myself vacuuming the car in prep for a dispute with my credit card company. The shadiness and the feeling someone is trying to nickle and dime you isnt good for business... also if they dont want to vacuum Id be willing to speculate they dont wipe the surfaces down either. So if COVID has you worried about touching common surfaces that are shared with stangers then bring wipes or go rent somewhere else.2 other noteworthy things: Youll stick out like a sore thumb and everyone knows youre a tourist in these things. They have 808SmartCars and rent me stickers all over them. Finally, Doc comes across rude and arrogant.

One Star is toot much.Here my experience with them. On Jan. 19th 2018, I rented a smart convertible. When I took possession of the car the driver seat upholstery was cut the foam was visible. The car was 2009 with 78,263 miles on the clock. I took it and a few blocks driving away, I noticed the yellow light for the tires was lit in the dash. I returned to the rental company, they told me the tires were god there was no problem with the car only the light. I asked for another vehicle with no warning light flashing in the dash. KALANI (the employee? or owner of the business?) told me there was no other convertible available, and the other cars were reserved. KALANI also told me he prefers not to do business with me and that I had an attitude. Great customer respect.I was reimbursed.Another thing particular regarding that renting company, in their condition you have to return the car vacuum clean of sand otherwise they charge you 30$ for the cleaning. When you go to Hawaii you go to the beaches and sand is unavoidable. First time in my life that I see a condition like this to clean the car before returning.Stay away from that business.

The best things about these cars are they are super easy to park! And really cheap on gas...we took it over to the north shore twice and had no problems! Totally would reccomend!

Fun ride and the staff was super friendly and helpful. We walked in off the street and reserved the Smart car, the staff member worked with us and made the rental work around our time frame. When we dropped the vehicle off after the week a different staff member (unsure his name) stayed late and waited around for the shuttle to arrive to ensure we had a ride to the airport. This is an awesome place! The staff is amazing and extremely helpful, great price and the cars are so much fun to drive! Never thought Id say that about these but after having it for 5 days we absolutely loved it and highly recommend for anyone visiting Oahu to drive these!

So great! My wife & I zipped all over Oahu in these cars that are fun to drive (esp. great having a cabriolet!) and of course super easy to park. On top of that, Kalani was a joy to do business with--it didnt even feel like business, he was so friendly and accommodating. He gave us great suggestions (restaurants, alternate snorkeling spots) and even set us up on a tour of the rain forest. Seek out this business!

If you only want to go from A to B, this is enough. Smart car is more fun than I expected. You can park it almost anywhere. You get really good milage (...46 MPG avg...)Only limit is that it takes no more than two people... ;-)The ones we met at the counter were awesome, really service-minded.I highly recommend this facility.

I was really impressed with this business, the price was very fair and the owner is a really nice and understanding guy. I parked on the wrong street and had my car towed because the street sweepers came down the road that morning so I was a little late getting my car turned in and the owner waited for me and was very cool about the whole thing. I will recommend this business to everyone who goes to Hawaii, and if I ever return they will have my business again. The cars are very cool too, its perfect for the island.

Highly recommended!! The cars are deceptively roomy and zippy, Im over 6foot and it comfortably fitted myself, my partner, 2 large suitcases as well as 4 smaller bags and took us around the island for two weeks with no dramas and used next to no fuel. The service from Kalani was second to none.

Probably the BEST experience I have ever had renting a car. The manager, Kalani, was so accommodating and pleasant to work with. The cars they offer are Smarts, something I have never tried. But they were so easy to drive, park, and they got incredible fuel economy. I am 63 and had no problem driving the car. I would highly recommend this company for renting a car while on Oahu. Mahalo

The Smart way to see the island!I cant recommend these guys enough. I own my own Smart so already knew how cool they are to drive around in, but if you have never driven one you really should try it, and you should try it here!The rates were good and there were no hidden extras, tax included, unlimited mileage, the price they quote is the price you pay.We hired for a day and then later in our trip went back and hired again. Both cars were clean and well maintained, they even lent me a lead to play my iPod through the car radio.Dominic was very helpful and when I needed to extend the rental for a couple of hours he just made it happen with no hassle or fuss.Id definitely rent again if I found myself back on Oahu and Id recommend to friends and family too.

Excellent service but horrible car. The Smart Car Cabrio (convertible) we paid for was one of the worst cars we have ever rented and has no business being in a rental fleet. A 2009 model, the transmission is mechanically malfunctional, the brakes squealed and were well overdue to be replaced. The leather interior was worn and torn, and the headlights were clouded. Luckily we parked in their garage and saw that they had plenty of other pristine convertibles, yet were unsure why this one was dumped on us. For $70 + tax a day, thats not cool. With just a 3 day visit, we didnt even have time to swap it out since they open late, at 9AM and close early, at 5PM.Luckily, the service was friendly and courteous. And you get to choose 2 beach items to take with you, which was very helpful. If it wasnt for the amicable service, this wouldve been a 1-star review.

Best rental experience I have ever had hands down, and I rent cars weekly for work. Since my initial inquiry about the prices, Kalani went above and beyon in customer service. I had to return my work rental and was picking up a new rental for the weekend. He offered to follow me to drop off my work vehicle and brought me back to their location to pick up my smart car. He took extra good care of me and made me feel valued and relevant, unlike a lot of rental companies out there. He diligently showed me multiple key locations on the island to visit and made sure I had everything I needed. He even gave me a beach towel on my last day as I had already checked out of my hotel and had no access to towels anymore. I would recommend this company to anyone who does not need a larger vehicle. If you are considering a moped during your stay, the smart car was less expensive than the two seater moped. Having a car is far more convenient that a moped anyhow. Best service ever. I will use this company again and again!!!

Amazing. Great costumer service and road service too! I was gonna rent a mustang because its convertable and the weather is great in hawaii and then I found 808 smart cars and their cars are convertable so you can enjoy the weather too and you can park your smart anywhere!

My wife and I didnt expect a car rental to be one of the high points of our honeymoon, but were were still talking about it 4 months later. Airport transfer wasnt listed as part of our rental package, but nevertheless Kalani called ahead and offered to collect us from the airport at 11pm, despite having to open early the next day. On the way to our accomodation he gave us advice on how to avoid the traffic as well as some great tips for things to see and do during our stay.Collecting the car the next day took no time at all and Kalani let us know that he and his team were available any time of the day or night if we had any problems. This soon proved to be more than just a promise. On our way to have breakfast that morning we hit a speed bump a little too fast and thought we might have knocked something loose. A quick call to Kalani and he was on his way to help. He drove a full 40mins (one way!), found the car in the parking garage, checked it, gave it the all clear and then notified me by text message, all without disturbing our breakfast. Mind. blown.The rest of our travels were a breeze. The car was a lot of fun to drive, super easy to park and we thoroughly enjoyed cruising around the beaches with the top down. We did almost a full circle of the island and only paid about $30 in petrol. Bargain!We opted to return the car a day early so that we wouldnt have the hassle of returning it on the same morning as our flight. When we came to return the keys Kalani offered us an extra day for free so that we could return it in the afternoon. He also offered to give us a lift to the airport. Feeling terrible because it was so early in the morning, we said that wed take a taxi. He instead arranged for a shuttle transfer through a reputable company with a 50% discount.The level of service and hospitality we received from Kalani and his team was unparalleled by anything we experienced during our stay (or since!). I cannot recommend them enough.

Great consumer service and extremely nice and helpful. Went to another car dealership and they wanted to charge $700 !!!! Got ours for $400 !

Car for 2, enough space and economical to use and cheap to rent. This is even cheaper than renting a moped.The service is great. You also get a TomTom, towels, chairs, cooler and a parasol. All inclusive. Love it ....Thanks for the service

The car was returned undamaged and cleaned under witnesses, so no reason to withhold the deposit. Of course, my mistake was not checking my account balance on the spot, unfortunately I did not do that until we were back in Germany. Unfortunately there was no response on demand, neither via Facebook nor by e-mail.Therefore, it is now unfortunately a lawyer.Not recommendable !!!
