Renting a car in Hawaii is difficult these days, but Angelo made it better. I called the Thrifty company about 2 weeks ago, stating that I know I wouldnt be able to pick up the car on the day that I initially intended but instead asked to pick it up the next day (I still paid for that first day; the booking could not be modified). They said it will be no problem at all. You can pick it up without issue at 8 Am the next day.I got to the rental car and to my surprise, my SUV was rented out. I guess calling advance and making sure I would have the car didnt make a difference? Angelo was helpful and got me a car. THANK YOU ANGELO. His coworker, however, (who was not even assigned to us) kept saying the policy is that we hold cars only for 2 hours. I said is this the case even if I called and made sure in advance with your company? Im just thankful I didnt have her.So.. please book in advance and come in within 2 hours of your scheduled pick up time or else your rental car will definitely be sold. Another girl next to us had the same issue.
They have a policy that, for premium vehicles, the primary driver has to be the credit card holder (NOT DEBIT CARD). This was not clear from the front and made things extremely difficult for us. The only way to resolve this was to put it on my wifes card and then charge us extra to put me as the primary driver.Then after all of this, they talk about refueling options. The lady at the counter explained to me that you can prepay a tank and then, when you return the car, they will refund you for the fuel you didnt use. The way that common sense would understand this is that if I prepay a full tank and use half the tank, I will get half of my deposit back. However, they only honor this if the tank is full when the car is returned. Otherwise, they just keep the money.Thrifty is not upfront about their policies and makes for an extremely frustrating experience when you are tired from your flight and just want to get to the hotel.
First of all the location is not easily found. It is inside a hotel and shares space with hertz. It was very confusing! The process of getting the car was smooth. I asked about timing to leave the vehicle because of early flights, the guy said they had an after hour drop off 24/7 to make it easier. He said the street and everything and said we could drop off the night prior. Upon following his instructions we found the location to be locked and closed. Security said there was no after hour drop offs. So here I am stuck with a car that can’t be dropped off during open hours. Sucks for them, I’m returning it to another location that is convenient for me and they can figure it out! Never again Thrifty!
Rented a car a few months in advance and got a good weekly rate. The agent was super nice. We arrived about 20 mins after the 2 hour grace period and it didn’t matter at all. We took an upgrade to a bigger vehicle so the rest of our party didn’t have to deal with day rentals. So friendly and stress free.
I don’t understand the Karen reviews. Our flight was delayed and we missed our pick up date. Everyone was super accommodating and we were able to pick up our car the next day with no hassle. They gave us a smaller car than the one we originally rented so they offered to comp the gas without us even asking. Again, the staff was super nice and helpful.
Nowhere, when renting the car initially, did it say that the purchaser had to be the driver. We had a driver available, but thrifty did not honor the reservation and insisted it was nonrefundable. We had just rented from Alamo in Chicago under the same situation, no problem. But thrifty added a rule after purchase and there was apparently nothing I could do about it. A very silly and frustrating experience. They do not work within reason or logic and their help level is approximately a zero.

Zero star for this place. Prepare yourself for waiting in line for at least 45 minutes.There is only one guy working there. He does everything by himself. He gets your documents and brings the car and take pictures. There was another guy but he was not doing anything.We stayed in line for 45 minutes and we almost miss our tour.
Never book a car from here, the won’t give a car or your money if you’re late even for one hour because your flight was hold due to maintenance of your aircraft or because the weather was bad. They won’t get any of these reasons and we spent two days trying to get refund or car at least for 4 days let alone 7. We planned to visit couple places and were faced this kind of behavior from them. Never book, it was our first time here and now we know there are better places to rent a car. If you don’t want to waste your vacation trying to get a car or your money back, rent a car from different place!
Very nice and affordable car rental experience! The car rental agencies here recently merged to use one location so even if youre renting from Dollar or Thrifty, follow signs for Hertz. Check in is on the second floor (take the stairs in the middle of the atrium up) and then you get your car in the basement garage afterwards. Check in took around 20 minutes and drop off less than 5. No surprise charges either which always a win when renting. I rented a Mustang convertible or similar option and got a 2019 Camaro.
Rental car was not given to us full. Staff instructed us that they were not able to fill it and that we would only need to return it with an equal amount of fuel. They then neglected to note this on the file and charged us $70 to refuel it anyway. Thrifty customer support informed us that since they didn’t specifically make a note then they can’t drop the charge. So we get to keep the $70 charge!Follow the other ratings and don’t rent from this place. It’s in the basement, hard to find, dingy, wait was over an hour for us and we got slapped with a pretty steep surprise charge. I wouldn’t rent from them again.
Bunch of clowns are working here. Worst place to get a rental. AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS. Will not honor your reservation made through Orbitz, Expedia etc. i am starting a claim against them. AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS.
They won’t honor your reservation if you’re 2 hours late due to a flight delay. They’ll then tell you to come back 12 hours later and then they’ll have a car for you. THEN, they’ll not give you the car they promised because an employee “read the website wrong.” Honestly, probably the worst place in hawaii to rent a car, and I’ve heard the same from the taxi drivers I had to keep using to get me from point A to point B. Find another place.
Read the reviews but went with them anyway. They are located in a basement and have merged with Hertz so you have to wander around a shopping plaza only to find out that thrifty no longer exists. Paid in advance and then was told when I asked the agent, after hearing the person in front of me be told they needed a credit card, that I didnt need one, pretty sure he didnt understand what I was asking/saying. So after walking around for 30 minutes Im told I need to get another form of ID to use my debit card. I obviously am annoyed and frustrated since I have booked something that is 30 minutes away and now need to walk back to my hotel for either a credit card or another ID. I use the f word and am refused my rental since I swore at him and explained my reason for using a bad word, since I am frustrated that I have to walk more to get additional documents after paying in advance. I need the 2nd ID or credit card to pay the $54 fees. So Im now here with no rental car and not the best experience. Ive never had an issue with other rental companies and Ive used quite a few and in different states. Also, they have 2 men at the counter but only 1 is doing anything. The other guy says hi and then acts like hes super busy walking out where the guys are cleaning the cars. Should have listened to the previous reviews.
We have spent 2 days and 6 hours on hold trying to find out if we can drop our car off outside of their open hours due to our flight. Then they finally answer and there is dead air and I get to start all over. Still no answers!!
If you choose a cheap car rental in the Waikiki area, this shop or dollar is always specified. The difficulty is that it is quite lined up at the reception in the morning, so it is necessary to make a reservation because it can be sold for 30 minutes or sold out. If you have booked online in advance, you can get a quick copy of your voucher by simply filling in your email address. I chose a compact car when selecting online, but it seems that there is no such size, and even the smallest sedan size is assigned.
The guy who helped us was great. Busy as ever but kept a smile (from what I could see covered with the mask) and did a great job.
Had very positive experience with this car rental. They give you shuttle back to your hotel no charge. Minivan is approximately $150-$160 per day. Plus you pay for your ⛽️ and return it with the level they gave you. We had dodge caravan and travel for about three hours on the island with traffic and at the end of the day we top it off for about $18.

ALEX MATEO the shuttle driver, is one of the reason why Im giving them 5 stars. He was able to pick us up at the airport. Very friendly and gave my wife a plumeria flower. He also explained how the shuttles work...he had Aloha nui...Mahalo nui loa ...a hui ho...malama pono AlexAuntie at the register was very welcoming...e komo mai nui..without knowing she gave me my favorite color car.The price was very affordable.Only improvement they need is the credit card reader..could not take my chip and my card strip was not working.. had to use a different card for it. After an hour of waiting in line they didnt honor my reservation because their credit card machine only accepts swipe and didnt manage to read my card. They didnt want to punch the numbers or use the chip. Disappointing!!
This location is an absolute pleasure to deal with...the shuttle picks you up from the airport and the lobby at the business is a great spot to sit and decompress from all the airline travel.Ginger helped me at the counter and she was sweet, funny, and had a warm smile. Being a guy from Iowa I had some questions and she answered them all. We waited while the car was being cleaned and my 10 year old daughter even noted how nice the people where at thrifty...shes a little red head who doesnt like everyone...ha!Thanks for the great experience Thrifty!

Dont rent from this location ( on Kaklakula) . We reserved on phone with Thrifty yesterday . They have terrible intake process where people with all needs are in the same line. So even though we, and others, had reserved cars for pickup- the line is about two hours long. When we finally get to the front, our car will probably already be rented out. We will now be at least an hour late for our event because we didnt know it was a two hour process, even with a reservation. Recommend using a more customer service oriented rental car company.
Last week I picked up a car here and returned it that evening with no issues at all and the employees were friendly. I waited in line 15-20min in the morning to pick up the car and there was no wait to return it in the evening. Happy with my experience here and would recommend to others.

What a joke. Been in line for an hour and still waiting. It is not that hard to process car rentals, everywhere else in Hawaii seemed capable of doing this, why cant Thrifty? This is the last time I use this or Dollar. What a waste of a beautiful morning.
Friendly service, got new and clean cars on both occasions. The staff were friendly, contrary to what some reviews have mentioned. The only downside was the waiting time for pick up - approx 20 mins both times. They could have another one or two check in counters during busy hours in the morning. Overall a good experience.
Thoroughly disappointed with this experience. I arrived 15 minutes before my reservation time, and ended up waiting an hour before I got my car. The wait times are incredibly long because they system at this location is complete trash. No automation, and everyone has to wait in a line and manually check in. Same problem when you drop off your car, as they try and make you wait in another huge line just to get your receipt rather than just given to you up arrival or sent via email. If at all possible, dont rent from this location, and if you have to, dont pick up the car first thing in the morning or right before they close. I tried to call Thrifty and have them give us some money back, but they refused to help us because we prepaid, and apparently prepaying for your rental somehow makes you ineligible to receive a refund. Ridiculous.

Despite others reviews my experience with this location was pretty good. I had a problem with a coil pack giving out at about 6pm at night; within about 2 hours they had a replacement car out to me even though it was on the complete opposite side of the island.Yes the cars have fairly high mileage but the rates certainly compensate when compared to Alamo, Enterprise and Hertz
Awful awful awful. I stood in line for an HOUR and only made it half-way. One couple took 25 minutes at one of the two open windows. Then, more people were visible that had stood in line but were still waiting for their cars to be cleaned. The two couples in front of me were from a cruise ship and were losing valuable shore time waiting in line. Finally, I decided to just leave. You could ride the city bus to HNL airport, pick up a car, and drive it back to Waikiki in less time that you will spend in line here. AVOID!
All good, quick pick up and quick return. No additional fee. Car was little bit dirty, but nothing horrible.

The biggest joke of a business ever. Had to wait 45 minutes just to speak to someone about a car we had already booked. Some of the slowest service I have ever experienced. Do not book with this company unless you want to waste an hour of your day standing in the sun.

The queue was an hour long and then 30 mins of admin to get the car.The same happened when we returned it.. returned it at 7pm.. couldnt leave until 7.45pm due to a massive queue.I definitely will not be using these guys again and wish I had read these reviews first!

Well I have recently returned from vacation and while I was on vacation I rented a car from thrifty car rental in ROATAN HONDURAS easy enough 52 bucks for the day and 350 buck deposit ... everything went well I used the car returned it in the same condition but when it came to the returning of my deposit the credit card machine just couldnt work for some reason or another waited 2 to 3 hours and no resolve I had to leave because my cruise ship was leaving .. now home from vacation and still no deposit is returned its been over a week and no word..... I will write every cruise line and warn anyone and everyone to not rent from THRIFTY CAR RENTAL ANYWHERE IS THIS THE WAY THEY DO BUISNESS I REALLY HOPE NOT..
Wouldnt suggest this company! Very long wait to pick up the car(1hr) The mustang I booked had a scratch or dent on every panel and had over 37000 miles on it and looked like it had not been washed in weeks. The rear windows didnt shut properly and it was the old mustang with a 4cyl not the facelift V8 GT. The only positive thing was the pick up and drop off staff were great

Worst rental experience I ever had so far. I booked a car with insurance (on the official Thrifty website), but had still to pay an additional charge on site before got the car. The staff was also not competent. Thrifty tricks people into renting cheap cars, however I ended up paying more than for a car rental at the airport terminal of a serious company with insurance (third party & car damage) included. Thrifty also did not answer to my requests via their official website.
How stupid am I. I read all the bad reviews while wasting 30 minutes waiting in line at the thrifty office and still went ahead. The first car they gave me stank like an ashtray and had been revived from the scrap heap. The second vehicle only had a 1/4 tank of gas. Finally I got a third vehicle from a friendly lady only because this had half a tank of gas- Go figure no cars with a full tank. When I returned the car with just less than half a tank (as it is very difficult to fill to a half tank!) Short story is they gouged me $32 for fuel after I had put $15 in and only traveled 90 miles.Moral of the story is this - don’t use thrifty and secondly read the reviews first and act on this!!!!
Very limited choice of cars and Very poor service. When running out of cars in our category except an old scratched and bed smelling one their options were this is all we can offer. DON’T USE!!!! Manager in another Thirfty was even harsh threatening and close to disrepectful

An absolute rip off. Fees ontop of fees ontop of hidden fees. Was asked to pay about 400 usd for a compact Nissan for three days.Go somewhere else for your car unless you enjoy throwing money away. It must have been Opposite Day when I went there because its not thrifty at all.

I can only CONFIRM the other reviews, very poor customer service Airport location great, but this location is aweful,had to return car 3 times as failed indicators, EML light on, cars all have excess 40 K miles, and one gentleman in specific age around 35-40 oriental large male, has the most arrogant aweful customer service attitude, Definately AVOID this location .BE WARNED.
If is possible rent a car in another company, the attendents are so rude, it is impossible to chat, I arrived to leave my car there, my friend was charging the car I came there before only to request one minute just to my friend cross the street to leave the there, they closed in front of me only to see my recreation if I was going to argue, I really donr recommend this company
STAFF OR MAINTENANCE STOLE MY PHONE.- Long wait- baby seat was quite dirty- first car had battery problem and would not start 20 minutes after leaving the car shop- forgot my cellphone in the first car. noticed after 30 minutes and went back to the shop. they said they could not look for it until the next day. Sunday they told me the same thing, then Monday they said they could not find the car and finally on Tuesday they told me it was lost. I have GPS track the last usage location was at their shop. Only their staff or maintenance had access to the car. Someone from their team stole my phone.
I stood in line for 2 hours to get my car, they said it wasnt a busy day. Then the car wasnt full and had two dents that they wouldnt mark.

We booked through the hotel and when we showed up to pick up our vehicle, they said that they didnt have any vehicles available and that there were 7 people waiting in front of me for cars to return. They did absolutely nothing to remedy the situation other than to say, sorry, try again tomorrow. Very shady place.
2+hrs waiting in 90 degree heat to rent a car that was confirmed? Staff rode shuttles to the airport to pick up cars. Customers were not offered even water while waiting. We had 9hrs in town and wasted a third of that getting a car.
Never rent from here, especially walk up. Rates are worse than you can get from Al Capone mafia. Often long lines, staff is unpleasant. And if you are late a few minutes, beware of more min negotiable rip off.

Although it is a rental car store in Waikiki along with Alamo, this is a bit off the city center, but it is also convenient if the hotel is near.You can also make a reservation from Japan, so it is more convenient to make a reservation first because the procedure is faster than making a reservation locally.

In the morning, I will be waiting very much. Even if I made a reservation, it took about 30 minutes to rent a car.Furthermore, on the second day I was told that I could not lend it without a passport, so I returned to the hotel for an additional 30 minutes, eventually an hour late.
