We had a wonderful experience here despite the reviews. We received professional, courteous and honest service here. A bit of a wait when we arrived due to covid 19 protocols in place. Very clean with a sanitation station for customers. Got a deal on a up grade too. Got us to the airport shuttle on time. We were very pleased with the service we received. Thanks Mex!!π
Worst rental car place you could imagine. Long waits and terrible service. They are cheaper than everybody else but prepare yourself for the bad experience if you use them.On the brighter side, the vehicle was good, worked great, no problems. The return process was a breeze, even though the experience to get the car was slow and painful.I think if you go into this with the understanding that youll have long waits and poor service, you might be fine, because the prices are quite good. Im giving 2 stars because of the price and the vehicle, and minus 3 stars for everything else.
I donβt get the poor reviews. The shuttle drivers were both really friendly and accommodating. They were on time and the man at the front desk who checked us in was so pleasant and kind. He could tell I was stressed out about dropping off my daughter for college and took the extra time to give directions and recommendations on getting to campus. It was probably the best experience I have ever had with a rental car company.
If you like to have your family stranded without your reserved vehicle. This is the place! Thanks for leaving my family stranded with nobody to service customers at your San Diego Airport location. Didnt honor the reservation. Still dont have a refund for the car you couldnt provide. Adding to it all, nobody picks up the phone, and when they do, you hang up on your customers. Awful experience!
This place is just absolutely terrible, The line is so extremely long, terrible customer service, and Wont honor theyβre website, Claims unlimited miles but when i got the car they said i have a limit per day! They deserve zero stars donβt waste your time! Waited 1+ hours and wonβt even help me out plus they wonβt refund me when the car when never driven off the lot
Wow! Contrary to most of the reviews Ive read, this place really did serve me well! Only thing was the long wait to get service (covid restrictions were in place), but great service though!TBH, all the other major car rental co. were so pricey, that it force me to look elsewhere. Mex Rent got it done yall!! The original car i booked was to small and needed a upgrade...no problem! Good deal too! After returning the car, there were no extra fees and nonsense either. We book through Expedia and that helped a lot too! Yes, I will definitely β them out again!
I had a great experience at this place. The staff was very friendly (like, beyond helpful), and the car was great (and at a great price)!Id like to address some of the concerns in the other reviews:1. I dont really see people calling it a scam. It was more that they had long lines and wait times.You will have to take a second shuttle from the first car rental location. I did have to wait in a bit of a line, but it wasnt outrageous. The inexpensive cost offset that.2. The insurance. I am going to assume a young local company made a mistake and didnt train the new desk people on what the policy was. They did NOT require me to purchase more insurance than I already had through Priceline.HOWEVER, their insurance was less expensive than Priceline, so I wish I wouldve waited and just got it through them.3. The friendliness of the staff. To be honest, I dont understand this one at all. They were incredibly friendly, like seriously I had an awesome experience with them. They were trying to hurry to get through the line, but still wrote down 2 excellent restaurant recommendations (which were fantastic).4. The shuttle. The shuttle was great! I would just recommend calling them when you get to the big rental car place. They have 1 shuttle driver who sometimes likes to jump in and help with car checking out. Hes super friendly and helpful, I would just call them to make sure he knows he has someone waiting.5. The only potential issue: They dont want you to take the car on road trips. This is my only issue, because the website says unlimited miles. Your corporate office needs to deal with this, either change the website or change your policy.Most rental car companies have unlimited miles on their cars. The website says this one does too... but then they ask you to keep it close... that should be different.Not a big deal... just understand that going in.Seriously, thanks, guys. I had an awesome experience here. I was in San Diego for a day for work, I decided last minute I might want a car to do some touring. I was worried it would cost me a couple hundred bucks, but these guys took care of me for around $50 for one night (that might be the lowest price available, I was on a Tuesday off-season, so you may pay more than that... but its definitely the least expensive option).Thanks again! Worry not, this isnt a scam. It looks like early on they got overwhelmed by the number of customers and needed to figure out the policies and the line. They seem to be in a better groove now.

THE ABSOLUTE WORST SERVICE EVER. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY. First and foremost, they are not on the same lot as all the other rental carsβ¦ I should have looked that up. Second, my reservation was for 2pm. It is 2:45pm and I got here earlyβ¦ so I have been waiting in this line, thatβs outside, for over an hour. Pay the extra $$ and rent from one of the brand names at the airport!!!!!!
My sister and our boyfriends landed in San Diego, waited 30 min before their shuttle picked us up, and then another 20 minutes to see an agent. Then they told us they sold our car to someone else and somehow blamed it on us because it was a same day rental. They said we can either get a refund or pay twice what we would have initially for a different car. Regardless of booking through Priceline, a small business with this poor of a review should be doing what they can to make the customer feel acknowledged and taken care of. My business will never go here again and I truly hope no one has as disappointing of a start to their trip as we had :(
I get why some may give them a lower review, but my experience was great. Yes they are not as streamline as the big rental car places but that is what usually happens with local car rental companies. Drew was super helpful at the desk and I know he was probably not getting happy customers because of the long wait line but he did great keeping awesome service.
The car I picked up smelled like weed and cigarettes. And still has peoples zoo trash. The lady at the counter gave me issues exchanging it. When I did get another it had food trash still in it. She must have thought since I am white I dont understand what she said about me in Spanish. News flash I am from San Diego and I understand every word. Rude employees. Dirty cars.

Dont waste your time. Yeah the prices are cheap but they force you to purchase their insurance even if you have rental insurance through your own provider, which costs an extra $14 per day. Arrived just before 12:30pm for our reserved pick up time, WAITED IN LINE OUTSIDE FOR 2 HOURS, and left with the rental at 2:30pm. They only had one rep working the desk most of the 2 hours we were in line. Never renting through them again.
RUN AWAY FROM THESE PEOPLE!!!! If I could give them zero stars, I would. I rented a car from 8/18-8/21. Despite showing Carmen (the rude lady at the counter) that my full coverage car insurance transferred to my rental, I was FORCED to purchase additional coverage (which their own website states is optional). I was not allowed to drive off with the car unless I purchased the additional coverage. They are shady liars. What kind of company doesnt follow their own rules? I am working with my credit card company to refund the insurance charge. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY.
Zero stars!!!! Hands down THE WORST experience we have ever had renting a car. Took us 45min to get there after waiting for shuttle service, which is less than ideal when traveling with an 11 month old. After arriving they refused to let me and my daughter inside with my husband, stating they had a one person policy. We waited out in the hot sun for over 30 min only to lied to and up-charged by Drew. After refusing to pay for their βrequired by California law insuranceβ they ripped the keys from my husbands hand and kicked us out, telling us we could find a way back and rent from someone else. Leaving us and our 11 month old stranded. We rented elsewhere and were not up-charged and confirmed that we didnt need to purchase additional insurance. This company does not care about their customers and will screw you over any chance they get. P
Please Please Please save your time and donβt rent a car with them!!!We found this place through priceline and liked prices that they offer. We reserved our car 10 days in advance!!! Money were withdrawn the same minute and we were confident about our reservation. On the day of pick up we received call from priceline rep asking us which location we prefer for a pick up. We decided to go to the recommended location.First of all we didnβt like that there is no parking space!!! They had a lot of empty space inside but they didnβt allow us to park on their property and they literally told us to park on the street on FIRE LANE. I was sitting in the car outside while my husband tried to get the car so we donβt get a ticket. Somehow weβve been told that they donβt have the car that we booked. They tried to upsell another car for a higher rate!!!! They couldnβt explain why our reserved car was not available!!! We called to priceline rep and asked if the car that we reserved was available in their different location but no luck!!! Please donβt rent car from this place. The worst customer service!!!! Waste of time!
We were in San Diego for our sons USMC graduation. There was a wait to get our vehicle, but once inside it went really quick. When we returned the car, the drop off took less than 5 minutes. The shuttle was already there and took us to the shuttle to the airport. Once on that shuttle I realized I left my cell phone on the Mex Shuttle. I returned to where they dropped me off and learned it was in the office where I dropped the car off. They took me back to the office then an employee took me to the airport to catch my flight. A HUGE Thanks to Drew, Pedro and Maria!!!
Horrendous. 1. The shuttle driver got out of the van to tell me to put my bag in the van, after ignoring my hello, how are you? 2. The car (I booked through Priceline) was not available. They said they had cut off same day reservations and blamed Priceline for still taking them. Not dependable and a waste of time, especially given the secondary shuttle necessary to get there. I just took an Uber and gave up on renting. Never again.
Horrible customer service, the bus does NOT run every ten minutes. More like once an hour. Stood in line for over an hour in the sun to get my car. Told them I did not want optional insurance, but they have you initial on a screen that only shows a spot to initial and you have to trust them on what you are signing. They added back the optional insurance at $17 per day. Check the contract before you leave, because they do not answer the phone. I would absolutely avoid these people. The hassle and surprise fees are not what you expect from a legitimate company.*** Even the return process sucks.
Horrible experience. I purchased this rental through Priceline at a great rate. Once I arrived at the rental location I was told to get in a van to take me to the physical location. As Im walking toward the van @ 545pm it starts to leave. I run along the sidewalk to catch it, but to no avail. I called the number listed on Google and the lady tells me that they are closing at 6 and the shuttle will not return. I ask what I should do and she says come back tomorrow. This wasnt an option so I ended up renting from a friendly, but not so upscale company for $400 when my original rental was $86. Upon returning from my vacation I contacted Priceline to get a refund. Priceline claims that I was a no show for not making it on the scheduled date. (No where in the terms does it say they close at 6pm btw.) Priceline refuses to give me a refund due to me being a no show. Mex Rent a Car and Priceline have lost a customer for life.
Overall good value and their shuttle goes on a reliable schedule. The main problem arises when you have to contact them by phone for any reason: they dont answer and their voice mail box is full. So if you have any problems like accidentally leaving an item in a vehicle youve returned, youre SOL and they seem fine with that.
The price online was $300 cheaper than renting from the big companies at the Rental Car Center. Ive rented from Mex in the past and never had any problems. We arrived at the Rental Car Center at 9:45 am and called Mex to have them send their shuttle to pick us up. They said theyd be there in 5-10 minutes. After 20 minutes, I called again and got the same story. Finally after 45 minutes of waiting, we found a taxi to take us to the Mex building. At the building, we had to wait in line for over 2 HOURS to get our car! I had 3 children with me who were hungry and tired. It was a nightmare. Like other reviews said, I was required to purchase their basic insurance coverage which added $85 to my rental. Im extremely disappointed with this visit and I dont think it was worth the savings to deal with it.
HORRIBLE! Do not waste your time or money renting from here! I had to wait in line outside in the direct sun for an hour to get checked in, when I got checked in they said they were overbooked and had to charge me extra for a bigger vehicle, in top of charging me for additional insurance when I have full coverage of my own. THEN, they charged my card twice! When I told the person that Im showing intent through twice they told me that on their end it only showed once and to call my bank. I called my bank and they said they indeed see it charged twice and that I would have to file a claim which would take 10 business days to review and refund. The nightmare doesnt end there. When I returned the car there was some sand un it and they informed me they would charge $60 to clean it! They vacuum the car anyway!! I talked to the manager and he was zero help and rude and said theres nothing he could do. Worst renting experience ever!!
If there was a zero star rating the Mex Rent A Car would be well deserving. If I had only known they were an off site agency from the Airport Car Rental facility I would not have booked them. Their rates were good but the service as bad as it could possibly be. I was told a shuttle would come every 15-20 minutes to pick us up but it turned into an hour after several phone calls. By the way, the number I was given to call was not answered and the mailbox was full. Once we got picked up and got to the rental site the agent would only see one person at a time and all the rest had to wait outside to be called. In other words DO NOT use this agency. Pay more for better service and youll be better off.
Pickup was not good. Took almost 90 mins to get our car. Drop off was great. Super easy and fast. The car was fine, standard rules. If the check in wasnt so slow, I would have given them 4 stars. The company is off the airport and off the rental car center in San Diego. A shuttle is required to get back to the airport.
Read the reviews people!! This place needs to be shut down. ZERO STARS! Worst car rental company ever! They are very shady and they lie. They add insurance when you tell them you already have it. Make sure you look over everything before initialing it, because once you initial theyll tell you they cant do anything about the extra charges because you signed for it. π€
If I would give this location a 0 star I would.I will never again try to rent at this place or any thing with the name Mex-Rent-A-carI made the mistake of thinking I was saving a little bit of money but it backfired. I got this rental through a third party which everyone usually does. Priceline had a a set price which was $120 and mentioned I had $0 when picking up.I show up at the location and Iβm coming to pick up the car and the agent lied to me and told me it was a requirement for insurance/or waiver in order to rent a car it was a extra charge that was not necessary. I insisted many times that I donβt want any, I even gave him my own full insurance information. Still, He insisted it was a requirement. I agreed to pay the $100 insurance since I needed the car. Then ten minutes later I check the receipt he crumpled in the envelope that the insurance he told me was a requirement was actually OPTIONAL. He lied.You got to be kidding. I tried calling to dispute my charges but they were closed.I called the next day for customer service but they told me go to the location.I go to the location and the agent tells me she canβt do it but to text the manager by TEXT only.I text the manager and no reply after four days.I call customer service again, made me wait for 40 minutes and then hangs up.I call again and they said they will talk to someone higher up and to get a call back. Itβs been four days and I havenβt received any call back.I call the next day and they tell me to email customer service.Waste of my time and more unnecessary money.Do not rent from there everThe worst customer service.Not to mention the first car he gave me the key battery was dead, so he gave me another car but didnβt replace the receipt. This was the WORST customer service Iβve had in a long time. I upgraded our car to a larger car and they refused to refund me for the original reservation (compact car). So now Iβm out $158 and they refused to help after i explained the situation. DO NOT RENT HERE JUST GO TO ONE OF THE TRUSTED COMPANIES!!! Lesson learned.

Waited 2 hours in line in 90Β° heat. No shade, no water, not a single employee came outside to address the line of people. Never got a car and Mex nor Priceline would give a refund. Ive never been treated so poorly by a company in my adult life.
Let me start by saying I have never left a poor review for any company ever and this is my first. I am beyond frustrated that I cannot speak to someone or receive an email reply regarding getting a refund on my deposit. Over the last 2 weeks I have left 2 messages (most of the time their mailbox is full and you arent even able to leave a message), have sent emails (email address provided on documents comes back as undeliverable), and continue calling almost daily in hopes of someone actually answering the phone. I received excellent service from Lenny when I rented the vehicle and the shuttle service provided by the young man when I dropped off the car was also stellar. I am incredibly frustrated though that I havent received any communication once I dropped off the vehicle and have no idea when Im going to get my deposit refunded. I was told I would receive an email and that my deposit would be refunded right away. Because this has not happened and because Ive received zero communication since dropping off the car, and despite the friendly, efficient customer service from Lenny and the shuttle driver, I absolutely would not recommend renting from this company.
I actually wouldnβt want to review any stars. We waited out in the sun for almost 2hrs to get rental. And then I was told I would get a refund due to not having car for the last day of rental. I received nothing and after calling about it the guy Menard had no empathy answering my call only comment was I donβt see that noted. I wouldnβt ever use this rental service.
Worst experience ever. I had made my reservation almost 4 months in advance. When the day came they didnt have economy cars I wasnt the only having issues that they. There was only one person working he was very rude when I asked for his name he only said Jr he didnt want to provide his actual name he kicked me out of the office. He wanted me to pay for every mile and I wasnt allowed to take the vehicle outside of San Diego county which I rented unlimited no restrictions since I was renting it for 2 weeks and going out of town. Dont rent from here its a hassle trying to get a refund. They take forever when you check in I was there for over 2 hours and come out without a car and pure frustration. Theres no parking. And if you are able to get a vehicle they up charge you
Place is super shady. Told me they were out of compact cars that I reserved on Priceline. Guy at counter told me I could upgrade for $40. He said he did have a few vehicles that had no options, meaning no power widows or air conditioning. I said fine but that I didnβt want upgrade. He then charges me $39.99 and moments later tells me he upgraded me for free. This place will lie to you in your face. Place is located off site from the airport.
Ridiculous. You have to take another shuttle from the airport rental spot... and it just runs whenever they want. Get to the office and theres 10 people in line outside... it took 45 minutes to get in the office. The whole time they have almost no cars in there, as people are returning cars theyre immediately renting them back out

Be aware that renting from this company will cost you valuable time and money. Theres an extra wait for a second shuttle to their off site location and the line to get my car was about 20 minutes. Then I was charged $282 for ONE WEEKS worth of insurance only to read my contract later after I got some rest after traveling to find out it was optional. The only reason I gave it 1 star is because the shuttle driver was very polite.
Booked through Priceline and when I arrived to pick up my car I was told that they were not honoring online bookings because the price was too low but I could get a car for triple the price of what I had already paid. Ended up having to go somewhere else to get a car since it was an emergency. Itβs now been almost 3 weeks and I am still waiting for a refund from Priceline which they canβt issue until the rental car company confirms they never gave me a car. They are not responding to calls or emails from Priceline
I am writing this to caution others before they decide to rent with this company. Waiting to rent a car after originally making the booking was painfully slow, out in the sweltering heat, with only one person working the counter at a time. Picture this when you have a line of 30 or more people waiting to get their car rentals. You will easily be waiting several hours before finally receiving your vehicle, and when you finally pick it up, be charged with hidden fees that were never listed on their website. Stay far away from this company no matter how good their prices may seem. Dont say that you werent warned!
This place was actually really great, I was a little nervous when I saw all the bad reviews. Shout out to Drew, he was awesome and really helped me out! I donβt know about any of the other employees, everyone seemed super friendly. Itβs nearly impossible to get ahold of them over the phone so thatβs the only reason why I gave them 4 stars. I donβt know how to get to the customer survey to give props to Drew so if someone wants to drop a link so I can do that, that would be sweet.
Our experience was terrible!We got there 2 hours late because of delay of our flight and they said they HAVE TO CHARGE US an upgrade because they did not have our reserved car available. (We reserve a βcar choice by the agency and they had bunch of cars there!!!). Before that they wanted to force us to get an insurance saying itβs mandatory under the law. Liars! You can use your liability insurance for that!! The guy (who said he was the manager) gave us a hard time when we asked for a full refund since it was not our fault. Itβs been more than two weeks ago and we still have to call every day on our vacation to Priciline just to follow up the claim for the refund. Terrible experience!
I booked this threw hotwire.com. I payed online and booked payed for the insurance. I signed up for a standard SUV. When I got there all they had available were compact cars. And they stated I needed to upgrade. So that was an additional $97. Then I was told that the insurance I payed for did not cover their cars. And had to pay an additional $87. On hot wire my total was $345. At the car rental place they asked for $485. I was annoyed but took the car. Now, three days later they sent me another invoice that I have not seen with the total coming to $578. I never signed anything that states I agreed to this amount. On top of that. When I picked up the car, the car was alarming it had low tire pressure. I returned it. And they told me to go to a gas station and get it done. 100% unprofessional.

Never had a worse experience with a car rental. The man behind the counter appeared young 30s would not let me leave until I paid for their supplemental insurance. I explained that I decline and my CSP and auto insurance will be enough, was not allowed to have the keys. Asked to speak to the manager, wasnβt allowed. Ridiculous.Called chase afterward and they werenβt able to help since I βauthorized the transactionβ. They are a scam and I hope someone reads this before you book with them. Would leave Zero stars if I could.
They are the worst rental car I ever been to. I wish I could give them a negative start. Waited for long hours in the queue at the end, because Im san diego resident Im required to have so many documents and what top it all Im only allowed to drive 100 miles a day, and they have kept the rental charges. What an ironic rules to have. The lady who did help me was she rude or was she the worst customer service I have ever meet. That is my experience with this place.
I only have good things to say about this company. The car was great, super clean and safe, perfect for exploring during our time in San Diego. Junior was very knowledgable and helpful with recommendations in the area, as well as professional and personable. 10/10 would totally recommend this place! And there is a shuttle back to the airport. I will definitely rent from them in the future!
DO NOT rent from Mex Rent A Car! They are not located at main rental car area. After you ride the airport shuttle to the main rental car area you then have to call Mex to come pick you up and take you to the Mex car rental location. After you finally get to the Mex car rental location you get to wait outside for an hour in the hot sun to meet with a cashier to get keys to a vehicle that you have already repaid for through Priceline. The cashier, Carmen, scammed me and made me buy liability insurance through Mex Rent A Car for an additional $81.00 even though I already bought insurance through Priceline. Carmen told me that the rental insurance policy I purchased through Priceline was not good enough. I also have rental coverage through my personal car insurance. I was unable to cancel the rental insurance I purchased through Priceline. When I finally got my rental car it was not thoroughly cleaned. The outside and inside where still dirty and there were shopping receipts from the previous renter still inside the car. When I received the rental car, the gas tank was only 3/4 full. Renting from Mex Rent A Car was the worst experience I have ever had! I will never rent from them again! Donβt waste your time and money on Mex Rent A Car!!!!
I booked through Tripadvisor and I got what I thought was a good deal. This rental car company is so inconvenient, and on top of that they scam you. Carmen at the desk charged me $200 for a deposit(Which was never refunded), and a $300+ collision protection that they told me was required, even though when I originally walked in she told me $600, but I got them down to half when I asked for the supervisor. I would not trust giving any information to this company. They told me I would be getting a $200 deposit back, and ended up refunding me $20. We returned their awful small vehicle in perfect condition full of gas. LISTEN TO THIS: This rental car company is two shuttles away from the airport. Nothing could be more inconvenient. After a long flight with kids and lots of luggage, one shuttle was already a lot, two shuttles and then the experience we had with this company was a nightmare. Also, getting back to the airport for departure added over an hour before we even got to the airport. I will be in contact with Tripadvisor to let them know how inconvenient and unprofessional this whole experience with your company was. I will be getting my full refund regardless from either them or you. This incident is also being reported to the BBB. If you think your getting a deal here, your absolutely wrong. Pay a little more directly through a rental car agency that is part of the one shuttle dropoff.
Worst place EVER!! Wish I read the reviews! The shuttle didnβt even pick us up we had to get dropped off by a different shuttle. They upset so many people and charge me an extra $230 on TOP of what I paid for price line!! I am surprised the apps are even supporting this BUSSINESS!! And they wonβt answer my call!!

This place is a scam and should be dropped from the airport and places like Hotwire.They took our money without providing service and it took weeks to get it back through Hotwire. In addition we were out a rental and had to pay over double for getting one on the spot (thankfully there was still car available with another rental car company).We arrived at San Diego airport and then took the shuttle to the off-airport car rental pick-up location (for Ace/Mex rental cars). I called Ace/Mex and they said they run the shuttle every 10 minutes. Other people waiting for Mex came to wait as well and they called Mex as well and Mex said they were on their way. We waited a period of time and called again and they said the shuttle was on their way again. After waiting an hour at this point, I called again and they said the rental car company is closed now. They also said the shuttle came, which was not true because we were outside on the curb the whole time (with the other group and on the phone with Mex asking for shuttle at least 3x times). An airport employee said this wasnt uncommon for Ace/Mex and they likely didnt have any rentals. I called Ace/Mex again and they said we couldnt get the rental that night and hung up on me. Then we went to 3x other rental car companies before Fox offered their last one for over double the price.
It was the worst experience I have encountered renting a car. When I got there after a long flight I just wanted to pick up my car since I had reserved with time and paid for . Got there and there was a huge line and it was going by so slow . One person only in the office that will take 40 minutes per person . Everyone was also complaining because nothing sit right around here . There was a family with little kids waiting in the sun for four hours just for a car cleaning . When I was next they said I didnβt pay and blah blah trying to get money out of me I was there arguing for so long showing them proof they said it didnβt come up on there end . I ended up paying double just because I really needed a car ASAP. I read the reviews of this place and itβs all so true . This place should b shut down stay away if possible .
Although I wasnt prepared to pay $150 deposit, I did. Then they charged me $101 for insurance when I had insurance. Then they pretended They were also very flexible with our car return time. But was a lie because after I returned the car, they charged me an extra $73 (I was only 4 hours late with their permission) They said if I gave them a good review they wouldnt charge me and they still charged me. Everything they said would be flexible came with a big charge. Total I payed $400 for 5 days. Thats Pathetic!! When I called to dispute, they asked me to email their care department. These kind of people make me sick!
Given the incorrect vehicle stating that a standard suv is a Nissan Rogue. That is a compact suv. The customer service if you can all it that is horrible. Will never use this company again as they took 0 steps to rectify the issue. Fast-forward a few months later and I am still awaiting my security deposit. I had to get the credit card company involved as a dispute resolution. Also notice the responses from dissatisfied customers are all the same because itβs an automated response and the email they provide does not work, that to is an automated response. I have been waiting an email response for over 3 weeks now. I donβt expect to get any resolution but my intent is to have customers aware that please do not use this company. I learned the hard way, itβs best to pay the extra and go with a reputable company.
Ended up paying double of what I booked 3 months in advance. Pretty much like the Spirit Airlines of rental cars, but worse. First time booking a non major car rental company. Took probably an hour to get there bc they have to pick you up. After waiting a long time in line I was told they were out of compact cars that I booked. They said I had to pay extra to upgrade. Still to this day dont understand why is it my fault they were out of the car I booked and I had to pay extra. Out of the dozens of times Ive rented a car Ive never had a company make me pay for their mistake. They said I could either pay or cancel. Ridiculous. Stay away.

This place is a SCAM!!!! We booked a van for a week for upcoming Yosemite trip. I waited an hour outside and the first question that I was asked at the counter was about our trip destination. When I said Yosemite the lady replied that they dont rent cars outside of San Diego!!!! I was certainly shocked to learn that because I didnt see any restrictions on Priceline and Ace sites when I was reserving a car. I politely asked to point me to the policy but was told that its not her job and that I have to find it myself somewhere in Terms and Conditions. After repeatedly saying that I dont see any limitations in my booking she became very irritated and started angrily searching herself. She finally produced a page where it clearly states that the car can only be rented in California, Nevada and Arizona. I pointed that Yosemite is in California and therefore is covered by the Terms and Conditions but was rudely told that the cars are only rented for San Diego and that I wont be able to rent from them NO MATTER WHAT!!! Of course I asked for a manager. When Pedro, a manager showed up and was briefed on what happened he repeated the same story: NO RENTAL!!!! He was also straight up: You better not waste your time here because you wont get a car. Go to another place and rent there if they still have it!. I was trying to reasonably show Pedro his own Terms and Conditions to hear the same response that I wont be able to rent a car from them regardless of anything. He started pushing me out of the counter saying that I am taking space from another customer. Eventually he said that if I wont leave he will call the police to which I responded go ahead and remained waiting in the middle of the facility. It took him over an hour to dial someone. Not sure if he placed a call or wanted to scare me but he gave my full description stating police is on the way. For another 40-50min I kept asking when they are coming but was repeatedly told to stay away from Pedro because he will report it to police as business disturbance. Another guy at the counter was equally intimidating and together with Pedro they were repeatedly coming to me threatening to leave the rental place or ELSE!!!! Needless to say after wasting another 30 min I gave up and feeling extremely frustrated loudly voiced my disappointment with Pedros business. He looked very satisfied and pronounced with the smirk So far no one waited long enough for police to show up. It meant that the scare tactic used to intimidate me was not the first time employed by him towards his customers! This behavior from Pedro (who identified himself as the manager, general manager and owner) and his employees is absolutely outrageous!!!!! You cant trust this place because they are twisting their own policies, disrespect and intimidate customers!!! No wonder so many people have complained, gave this business the lowest possible rating and called them a SCAM!!!
This was a great company to lease a car! I was very pleased with my selection and the staff was very accommodating and professional.
I booked my reservation through Priceline and paid in full months ago. Because we refused to pay for the elective damage insurance (we are fully insured through our own car insurance) and we were planning to drive outside of San Diego County the rude, unprofessional counter agent refused to rent the car to us. Again it was prepaid in full and she told me to take it up with Priceline.
Be very cautious before renting from this company. They advertise being at the airport in San Diego, but they are not. Shuttle to the rental companies, then you have to shuttle to their company site. They had a car for us which worked good. Mostly clean. Washer fluid was empty. They forced us to purchase their insurance before we could rent even though we had our own through our personal insurance company and verified we were not going to Mexico with the car. The really bad part was that when we returned the car (no problems) they told us the driver had not shown up and they had no other way to get us to the airport. The clerk told us she had texted the supervisor but that was all she could do! :( no taxi, uber, nothing. She said we could wait to see if a driver might show up. Our party and another party (5 people total) went to one of the competitors next door and they gladly gave us a ride to the airport.Will not recommend or use this company again.
Purchased through Priceline and paid for additional coverage through Priceline site. Arrived at the MEX in San Diego on Friday 6/25/21 and was told I have to purchase insurance through them ( fine print says optional ) and I would need to call and cancel my insurance through Priceline. That is unacceptable. They are forcing you to use their insurance to make extra money. Also, our flight left at 6:30a on a Sunday and they dont open until 8a.I asked about dropping the SUV early and they offered Park, Shuttle, and Flight for $20. We went there, left the keys in the SUV ( just like you do with on-site airport rentals after hours), found the shuttle people ( who were AMAZING ) and left. The shuttle people NEVER asked for the keys nor were we instructed to leave them with them from a MEX associate.After my trip, I noticed a fee charged on my card. Called MEX #, sent an email to their customer care, and even used their text a manager option. Everytime the rep. would say someone will call me tomorrow from their office. Never did.Last associate I spoke to was rude ( all the others were pleasant ) and she said it was my fault because I should have asked for instructions on the return, that all other customer knew to leave the keys with the shuttle people, and that its my fault and Im not getting a refund.I sent an email to them asking for the SIGNED agreement that shows the instructions along with the fine print showing the potential charges if I dont follow those steps. If there is one, Ill gladly accept that and move on.I am amazed that they are still in business based upon all the bad reviews.Outside of the above, the SUV was readily available and worked fine.

As the review below says, this place is shady and run unprofessionally. I reserved a minivan through Autoslash with ACE rental cars, and this company, Mex Rent A Car, is a third-party affiliate of ACE. It is run off-site of the airport rental car company groups in a small trailer -- you take a shuttle from the airport to the car rental company spot and then another shuttle to the trailer (and the same to shuttles to get back once you return the car). I arrived at the counter to get the car and the lady behind the counter says that I will need to purchase one of their car insurances -- basic or premium -- before I can have the car. I did not know beforehand that I would need to purchase extra insurance (very non-transparent) and I told the lady that I already had car insurance that would cover me and this rental car. She said that I would not be able to rent the car unless I purchased one of their insurance plans for the duration of the reservation. I was upset because I have insurance already and this felt predatory. But I had to have the car and did not have time to rent another elsewhere so I purchased the $85 dollar insurance. It felt like a scam and with the price I ended up getting the car for I could have rented it from a more renowned company. The minivan I rented was also not clean. All of the seats were stained (water stains and one was large and dark brown). A bag of mini-oreos had been dumped between the middle seats, there were melted crayons in the trunk, and I found a half-drank water bottle below one of the seats. The engine sounded like the car had already been through a lot at only 47k miles (idled and shuddered a bit when we would stop and wait at red lights). I will never rent from there again because of being forced to buy their expensive insurance when that was never explicit in the agreement online.
Pros: Friendly and hard working staff. Least expensive rental over other places.Cons: 1 hour to wait for the second shuttle at the offsite car rental location. Another 45 minutes waiting in line to get the car.Bottom line: If you are not in a hurry and want the cheapest deal, this is the place to go.

Never rent a car in this place . I just got a car Yesterday and they charged me almost the double price that I was expecting to pay when I made the reservation on Expedia . The lady ( Carmen ) on desk is a rat, she will not show you the breakdown cost until you authorize her charging your credit card . Only after that, you will have a surprise that they included fees and insurance without your authorization . And If you do not want, they will tell you they can refund you in 5 business days . Even telling them that my credit card provides loss damage coverage, they charged me 17 dollars a day for insurance alleging they are a small company ( ?) and even having this insurance they took 200.00 deposit of my credit card ( for what ? if you are already making me paying for damage loss insurance ) . Finally, they allege the Expedia does not show the correct price and this is not their business . Unbelievable. The worst rent a car company ever ! Do not believe in their βlowβ rates on websites . Im in touch with my lawyer, I will sue this company for all lies .
False advertising when you book in advance. Away from airport very limited on the type of rides they have. But the car was clean and nice. They do shuttle overall recommend not booking in advance
Reservation was set via rentalcars.com a month prior to arriving paid in full for the booking. The rental car was listed as at the airport so it was expected to be convenient pick up. We arrived at the airport after our flight was delayed twice due to weather so we were finally ready to start out vacation. After arriving we were told to needed to take a shuttle to rental cars. We waited for the bus for 15 minutes and took a 10 minute ride to the rental section. At the rental car section we were told this company is not there and we would need to take another shuttle for offsite rental cars. This was odd because theyre listed as at the airport. We waited another 25 minutes for a mexc shuttle bus and took another 10 minute ride to the rental office. When arriving we waited in line for another 20 minutes as they would only let 2 people inside at the time. Once getting inside for my rental I was told we missed our pick up by 2.5 hours, and they only wait 2 hours to honor a booking. The worker said he cancelled our booking and they could offer me a ride back to the airport. This was shocking and insane given the amount of time it took to get to the place. He didnt offer another rental car just said sorry. So I left the building and waited outside for 15 minutes before getting back in line to ask what wasnt offered another rental car. Once getting back inside I asked did they have any other rental cars available as my family was basically stranded to start our vacation and desperate. He said they could get another vehicle but I would have to pay again. When booking the vehicle he said he was able to put it under my original booking which I was told 30 minutes earlier at this point was cancelled. I was actually happy at this point given I had paid in full for this booking. The guy then said it would be an additional 350 dollars for this booking. I was shocked because I had already paid for the booking once. I paid the additional $350 given I had no choice at the time. When we got to our hotel I read over the contract given and the additional charges was for insurance I declined on my original booking that it was under. I feel this company practices dishonest business practices and basically stole additional money from us. Id never recommend this company to anyone and will be filing a complaint with the BBB.
The wait to pick up the car was very long and moved very slow. But Drew was amazing, he was super friendly and quick to get us taken care of.
Avoid this place! Be careful about booking on Priceline. You have to take two shuttles from the airport (not on site like advertised), we waited two hours in the sun in line to get the car, and when we finally got the car they charged us double than what we booked and paid for in advance.

They charge you triple what you book online (mandatory insurance that doesnt even cover third party liability! what!) and the rental line took over an hour to receive the car even with a reservation.The agent said everything looked fine when I returned the car, yet my credit card was charged extra for gas without anyone saying anything. I just disputed the charges with my cc company because no one will answer the phone. DO NOT RENT FROM HERE. Waste of money, waste of time.
These people are crooks. They are deceptive in their practices, and upcharge you at every opportunity. They forced me to buy their insurance policy, and afterwards, I found out my own insurance was sufficient. After I realized this, I attempted to get a credit for the remainder, and they said they will not prorate it. It may be on me for not knowing, but I will forever not do business with SHADY companies, and suggest that you donβt either. Would not recommend them at all. Do not do business with these people, please. DO NOT SUPPORT SHADY BUSINESS PRACTICES!Edit* I sent an email to their customer service department. I didnβt get a response for two weeks. Iβm usually BIG on reviews, so i shouldβve did my research with this place! I booked a flight and car with Priceline and this rental company popped up and i didnβt think anything of it. Well when i got into SD airport, first off i didnβt know i needed ANOTHER shuttle after getting off one to get to the rental car center. The shuttle for the offsite rental place never came! And after calling numerous times, no one answered. While still waiting i came online to read reviews and surprisingly others went through the same situation. So i decided to get another rental car at another company because if they did decide to show up i wasnβt about to get over there and they say they didnβt have a car available. In the other car rental place, they stated they heard they close at 5 instead of 6. And at that time it was like 5:15. I was highly upset and i promise Iβll always do my research on car rental places before booking anywhere. This place will NEVER get my business ! (Oh and i did get a refund!)

Mex shuttle arrived after a 40min wait only to announce their βLOT WAS EMPTYβ before 1pm. So no one was able to pick up the rental cars they had reserved including mine I had PAID FOR. I was told they would ensure I received my refund, I have the driver my name and confirmation number and so far there has been no follow up. Their voicemail is full and no one answers the phone. As far as I can tell they are not a rental car business. If you have another option I would recommend you choose that one. Very frustrating to be scammed.
Avoid this place at all costs! They donβt pick up at the rental car location; ended up taking a cab only to walk into a large line, no cars, employees arguing openly amongst themselves inside. Left without a car and couldnβt get our money back.
Double charged me, hid behind fine print, and refused to even try to solve any problems with customer service. Also their shuttle goes to the other car rentals, not to the airport. We waited 30 mins for the Mex shuttle and then had to wait for the real shuttle. This place is absolutely not worth the wasted time, wasted money, and anxiety of almost missing my flight.Seriously, this place is exactly what everyone on here is saying, 2.4 stars is very generous. The 5 stars are all from people who luckily had a good experience. I picked up my car at CBX Border.I paid $230 for 7 days including insurance for a Kia Forte 2020. The car was great! I love it. 26k miles on the odometer.The only drawback was the customer service. I had some problems picking up the car. Took me an hour for the process! Returned was fine. 10 mins for the whole thing.
I can not put in words how they werenβt helpful and far from providing a good customer service! They decided not to give me a car as I reserved weeks ago. They asked me to pay three times more than I paid in advanced which I thought itβs a full amount to rent a car. They are really arenβt nice! I spoke with manager but he wouldnβt listen to me!
Well after a week of calling to see why I was charged an additional $102 than I booked through Priceline, Iβve resorted to giving a 1 star review. They do NOT answer their phones. Iβve called multiple times a day for over a week! The service was great when I was there to pick up and drop off. However, why was I charged more? And why was my paperwork not given back to me so I can compare what they printed out on there and what was charged to my bank account. I am extremely annoyed at this. I will continue to call until you give me my money back. Ridiculous.
Do not rent here! They have a 2 hour line and you have to stand outside in the heat under the sun! Not worth it. Only 1 agent and the checking process is super slow and frustrating
Do not rent a car from this company. We reserved a car online and when we got to the shuttle the drivers said they ran out of cars. They overbooked and did not notify us at all. Terrible company, take your business elsewhere.
Initially was concerned with some of the reviews. However, my experience was their customer service was great and the car was cleaner than my last rental at the same airport from a large chain. Their shuttle bus was waiting at the rental car terminal and no attempts to up charge.
I would suggest booking with them directly and not using Priceline because I upgraded the car on Priceline and they didnβt honor it. I had to double pay to get a 4 door car since I have two small children. I called multiple times over a two day period to get a question answered and they took a while to finally answer plus I was unable to leave a message on either day because there voicemail was full. Overall I did end up in a nice car with unlimited miles but I do not think I will be a returning customer.
HORRIBLE customer service and the wait is always sooo long. They dont even deserve a 1 star. Id do a 0 if I could. We recently went through here and was told the deposit was refundable on day 1. For one, its not. As we returned the vehicle they said its for liability reasons and its non refundable. They dont care what there employees have told you. Apparently its in the really small fine print. Secondly, as we were waiting outside the building, 4 other groups of people asked us about the charge and what we were charges. Every single persons was different and ranged from $100-$350. But all for the same liability reason. We asked to get refunded and the GM told us no. WARNING PEOPLE, DO NOT go through them. This was by far the worst car rental experience of my life. We rented online through Auto Europe, we paid in full 3 months in advance. Prior to renting the vehicle I called to verify the needed documentation, I was told I only needed to bring our car insurance, the credit card, and drivers license. After waiting nearly 2 hours for our car, we were shocked by all the additional fees they tried to put on us. There was a $285 deposit, which still has not been refunded, and $235 fee for liability insurance which we clearly stated we did not want/need. I contacted the company we rented the car through and now have an open claim. Additionally, I have tried to call Mex car rental everyday for the past 5 days, and not once does someone answer, and their voice mailbox is full. We turned our car in a day early too, which I doubt we will be refunded for. This company is so shady.Also, while waiting in line for nearly 1 hour, I saw the rental car they gave us returned, it was literally hosed off and vacuumed and redistributed. The interior of the car was stained and dirty. The break peddle made a squeaky noise when you apply pressure. The car idles when at a red light. It was a POS. This whole experience was a POS.
Was prompt, and even give us a ride to the airport after we turned the vehicle in.
They have phenomenal customer service. They take care of your rental needs quickly and care about getting you where you need to go. The shuttle service is nice. Enjoy!

We have rented with you before and have had no issues. Now this year we rented from you again . The issue was, you required a deposit that would be returned to our ccd when we returned the car. The day we dropped off the van, the gentleman helping us said it will take a few days to receive our deposit back to our credit card, that was fine but...now it is 25 days later and no return of our funds, no return of my many voicemails and emails!! Please respond and send our deposit, thanks!!
My husband and I came here to get a rental today. When we walked up the guy was helping to ladies. So we waited outside until he was done. It was our turn we walked up to the counter and he told us we both couldnt be in here. Now keep in mind he was just helping two ladies when we walked up. I immediately walked towards the doors but I let him know he was just helping two ladies when we walked up. He was rude and very unprofessional. I will never rent a car here. We made reservations at Enterprise instead. The reservations were in my name but my husband was paying for it and we were together like those two ladies.
DO NOT RENT a vehicle from them, shady place. When I showed up to pick up my vehicle the wait was super long. Then they charge me an extra $100 because I was dropping off in a different location. Even do I had already paid thru Priceline the extra charge. So shady!! I wish I could give them negative stars!! Please stay away ..
