I really wanted to enjoy this place because quite frankly its hit or miss for GOOD soul food in Hampton Roads. I stood in line for 22 minutes for them to say they were no longer accepting orders at 5:50. When I entered the building, they advised all fryers had been turned off (maybe 5:35). They were sold out of a lot of items like chicken wings, fried chicken, baked chicken, turkey wings, etc.I suggest they publicly give notice to customers that they stop taking orders/fried orders XX minutes before closing.

I ordered mashed potatoes, collards and cabbage and meatloaf with onions. I got rice, string beans and meat loaf no onions. 😡 She asked did I want to send it back after I waited for at least an hour and a half. Slow and nonchalant. Not sure if I will go back and the meat loaf wasn’t any good. Took to bites. Wasted my money. 😫

Omg this was my first time eating there and when I tell you some of the best food I had anywhere. This food taste like my grandma was somewhere in the back cooking. I most definitely will be returning.

The food is really good, but the customer services is horrible, terrible the worst. These people dont answer the phone. When you go up there people are waiting OUTSIDE IN THE HEAT FOR ABOUT AN HOUR.Bad business

This has been my favorite soul food spot but lately the service has been going down terribly. I have been waiting on my DoorDash order for over 2 hours now and as always the issue is they were out of stuff and I didn’t get a call until the fourth driver arrived. Everyone was canceling due to the long wait time even after two hours they still told the driver they would call her when the food is ready. This has happened too many times now. No one wants to wait two plus hours for food. We will be finding a new spot sadly. On top of all of that they replaced child plate with wing with pork chop which she doesn’t eat. Yeah we’re done with this place.

Place is small yet it serves alot of people. Soul food is definitely delicious. I recommend you try turkey wings, bake chicken, pork chops and fried chicken wings and the macaroni 😋

I purchased the chicken wing dinner. The chicken was fried perfectly; it wasn’t dry, hard, or greasy. The macaroni & cheese was cooked evenly and very cheesy. The cabbage was cooked just right and well seasoned. The only thing I didn’t like was the long wait.

This was my VERY 1st time there.The Food was Great and YOU get plenty more than enough. I will be back again

Food is decent and I eat here on a regular but today I was there standing outside listen to the phone ring as I was calling to place my order and they let it go to voice mail this has happened several times before and I thought it was because they may have been on the phone taking another order and I was beeping in instead of the phone actually ringing and someone hearing it and ignoring it and then the guy that was supposed to be security couldn’t even answer if it was gonna be a long wait or not he was sarcastic by saying people had to patient and all I was wanting to know is if it was a long wait. So maybe I should spend my money at another place that will respect the customer and answer the phone and take my order.

I had gone there a few times because there food was good but the last 2 times the food tasted spoiled. The person that worked there told me that the sweet potato pie was falling apart because it was so buttery. NOPE! It was absolutely spoiled. I had purchased 3 slices with no other food because on the previous visit the meatloaf was spoiled and very sour but I wanted to give them another chance and support this black owned business. They should be ashamed of themselves by selling food to people that they know has sat for days! We can taste that its no longer good!

Never going back to this place. I ordered 3 orders wings with sides and they apparently gave my order to another Greg meanwhile Im waiting for over an hour. Then they tell me theyre out of wings so I had to place 3 more orders of something else and to make up for it they gave me 3 slices chunky sweet potato pie that was obviously not properly made like it was rushed. Im done.

Today was my second visit; I couldnt help myself. The food is truly delicious, the prices are reasonable, and you get plenty in your carry-out!!! There is a variety of good Home Cooked foods listed on their menu. You had better get there early or youll have to stand in line... and its worth the wait!

My co-worker ordered a two piece fried chicken dinner with cabbage, mashed potatoes with gravy, and a roll. When I say the food was DELICIOUS that is an understatement! It was seasoned very well and full of wonderful flavors. There was so much food in the tray we both were able to eat and get full. Take A Plate is AMAZING. Definitely would recommend to anyone and definitely will be eating there again. God Bless the cook.

I ordered off of Doordash because I can never get through on their phone anymore work they just no longer answer. I ordered the Fried Whiting with potato salad and mac and cheese. When I got there and picked up my order, they just waved me toward my bag sitting on the Doordash table. Mind you, Im injured on crutches. I take the food home and it is Fried tilapia, which I dont eat, and just mac and cheese. Doordash claimed they were investigating, no answer. Called Jems and of course no answer. Should at least get what we pay for.

6:00pm on a Saturday. For a VA soul food place the food is alright but the service is lacking. They have limited hours, and have the nerve to close an hour or half hr early randomly, with no notice on the door or online hours. Or, they’ll be open but the fryer is “gone for the night” so that limits like half the menu items since much of the options are fried.Do yourself a favor and call. If they don’t answer the phone don’t go cause you may make a trip for nothing if they’re closed. As a DC native I’ve never seen a carry out operate like this. It’s getting harder to support black owned establishments.

My first and last time trying this place, I got Mac and cheese, fried fish, cornbread, yams, greens and cabbage.The Food was horrible, the noodles in the Mac were cooked too long, the yams tasted as if they use Karo syrup and nothing else. Cornbread was dry. Soul food is supposed to be made with love, Not only that the young lady at the front desk was very rude to my mother and aunt she had a nasty attitude.

I have ordered from this establishment several times through Doordash. My last order was not so good. The fish and vegetables were good. The dessert not so good. The top layer of the bread pudding was burned, black. I tasted a piece to make sure it wasnt a chocolate topping and it wasnt it was burned. I cut the top layer off and the bread pudding was good. I just wished they had did the same. Thats the only reason I did not give a five star rating.

There food is bomb. Looking for a good home cooked meal on a Sunday or matter of fact any day they are the plug when you dont feel like cooking. This chicken and dumplings 😍😍😍😍😍 bomb. Everything I have tried has been bomb no disappointment yet

This a to go only eatery. To avoid waiting for your meal you may want to call ahead. The food was served quickly and tasty. The cake was also good, but the frosting was made with granular sugar that made it a bit crunchy. Ill return and will give the peach cobbler a try next.

I wasnt going to leave a review because the front people were so nice! After reading several reviews I find I need to do a review. I arrived 6:30 Sunday & ordered smothered chops, rice & string beans. After waiting 1/2 hour and getting home my chops were fried so hard and the gravy was too salty! The rice was kinda hard and after taking my money... the clerk informed me there was no more string beans, a fact I was ok with had my order been better. I WILL return because Ive ordered before & the food was exceptional. To boot theyre closed on Monday and Tuesday...Id thrown the food in the trash by then. Wished Id kept for a refund because I dont have $10.50 to give away.

I walked in on a recommendation. I usually go to Some Da Eat in Norfolk, VA. However, this restaurant is down the street from my residence. Thus, decided to give a try. I got a four piece chicken dinner with yams, Mac & cheese, and cornbread as sides with Peach cobbler. There was no seasoning on the chicken and the whole plate lacked flavor. Ordered a fish sandwich for my friend. He states it was okay. Nothing to write home to mother about. Hence the two stars instead of one. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

Ive gotten good from here several times and it is always good. The prices are reasonable. The amount of food is great also. There is plenty of parking as long as there is no function happening next door.

The best soul food in Portsmouth! Everything I get from there is seasoned to perfection. The staff are courteous and friendly. I would recommend them to anyone who loves good ole grandma style southern meals.
