Oh man!! I just received one of the best haircuts Ive Ever had from Veronica. She is so dang skilled. An actual wizard with scissors and clippers.During the heat wave, I will be cursing the names of Big Oil and singing praises for Veronica & Rough Cut.
Had an appointment scheduled for 10:30, the lady who answered the phone didn’t book the appointment when I called, so when I arrived they weren’t happy that I was there. The barbers wanted to know what I was doing... hilarious, what is the point of the appointment?
Professional service in a casual setting. Love the vibe.
I tried to book an appointment with one of the barbers, but they decided to leave early and not cut my hair. I booked another appointment for the same day with another barber and they left me outside, in the cold because they took a walk in at my scheduled time. I finally left when I had to wait outside 30 minutes in freezing weather. Rough Cuts really needs to up it’s game if it is going to survive the pandemic. Professionalism is low and the cost is high.
Friendly and always a good cut, also very clean and safe during covid.
Had nearly 4 months of hair, which the barber here took care of pretty quickly. I went a few minutes before they opened, so 1st customer of the day, it was just me and the barber, the next customer had to wait outside. The barber cut my hair w my mask on, which I appreciated, taking off one ear at a time only when needed.Ive had better haircuts, but the barber did a very good job. Only problem for me was the sign-in process, which the barber was trying to explain to me, but I had trouble understanding her due to her accent. Thats entirely on me being old and stupid and only knowing one language.Ill be back.
Awesome people with skill.
Very friendly staff. Good price for the quality of haircut. Drop in only, can be busy at times so maybe be prepared to wait a little. As of today price for a male haircut was 27 dollars which is the cheapest and best Ive found in this are. Recommended.Update: due to Covid19 you now have to make an appointment. Marco who cut my hair was very diligent with cleaning the entire station and his tools before I even entered the shop. Once inside they took my temperature and took down my phone number for contact tracing just in case. Very responsible and made me feel good about the whole experience.
Friendly and great cuts :)
A great place to get your haircut. Veronica was outstanding!!
I’ve been on what seems like an endless search for a barber in Portland. I was never a fan of walk-in types of places, which may have worked against me during my initial search. Marko is an awesome barber and always executes what we talked about during our consult. Pssst, Rough Cut is reasonably priced too.
First came to Rough Cuts several months ago on a Saturday. I got a haircut from Nicole. She was extremely friendly and professional. I had the best haircut of my life! She is now my regular barber and I look forward to every haircut. Consider yourself lucky if you get her. Great shop with a super talented staff. Get your haircut here!!!
Great service and good price. Very knowledgeable barber who spent time to do a good job. They dont accept appointments, but I went in the afternoon and didnt have to wait.
The dude just lost another regular customer. Like one of the reviewers below I must have been the target of the same guy. Something to do with the way I tried to explain what I wanted changed to my haircut. He did not have the patience to understand my way of explaining, probably because I did not use the right words as a Dutch expat. He got totaly frustrated and rude. I walked out. Very strange to have experienced this while we had nice conversations the other times he cut my hair. Disappointed especially because my daughter of three had to watch the whole ordeal.
Making and appointment was really easy great haircut
Very nice
I stopped in this barber shop while on business in the city. Great cut and friendly staff! I will come back on return trips definitely.
I only got a trim and a mussing of my hair.I give 5 stars because everyone there was super kind amd friendly. Were I still living in Portland I would 100% choose to go here regularly. :>
Ive been getting my hair cut here for the past three years. All of the barbers have cut my hair at one time or another, and theyve all consistently done a great job. Theyre friendly and professional. Skip the chain shops; get your hair cut at this cool, locally owned barber shop thats truly a part of the community.
Ive gotten two really solid haircuts here. For me, its the perfect blend of walk-in barbershop casualness, low cost, and super friendly and attentive barbers.
You whiners should have photos on your phone you can show, rather than trying to verbally explain what haircut you want. This is an independently owned shop so there arent any rules about how to treat customers. If youre weird or perceived as being out of line in any way, theyll tell you to get the f$ out and suffer no negative consequences. Ive had about 100 haircuts here, some better than others, but never bad.Barber King on Westover will whack you up for $20 and make you look like Pinocchio, while Bishops cant competently handle more than a head shave. This is the best barbershop in NW Portland. Its not a hair salon or beauty parlor.
Outstanding place to get a haircut. I was fortunate enough to have spent my time Nicole. All I did was show her a few photos of me when I had shorter hair and she gave me the perfect cut. Thank you!
In addition to giving a great haircut, Nicole is one of the nicest, most interesting people to visit with. Her work is consistent and shes always in a pleasant mood. Rough Cut is fortunate to have such an able, responsible, and professional individual working at their establishment. Keep up the good work, Nicole!
I asked the barber to take off two inches and she took off 8. The entire time she acted complacent like she didnt want to be cutting a womans hair. I really think she was intentionally doing a bad job ( its crooked too!!!) so That I wouldnt return.I felt like they didnt want women there, just men. Nonetheless I feel violated - she chopped my hair off And I need to go to work tomorrow with this horrific haircut?!!? Awful... I am taking this to another level. I feel extremelymely violated. My professional career may be hurt due to this.
Got a great fade and beard trim here. Highly recommend.
Great old-fashioned barber shop with no reservations required. I typically go to either Veronica or one of the guys whos there on Saturday mornings. Always do a nice job on a traditional haircut for a reasonable price (~$20).
Cool little historic shop. Ive had my hair cut by most of the barbers and they are all really nice people. The wait isnt too bad in the evening and the cuts are quick. Always look forward to going in!They take both cash and cards, btw.
Nichole did an awesome job!! Im a complicated person, so she did very well. Very very happy :)
Ive been going here for years, and get a consistently great cut from my barber.
This place needs competition. The overall vibe is surly, unfriendly, and rude. Who cares about the haircut quality if you have to put up with their stink? They must have enough business with their regulars and only so much love to give. Find another old-timey barber shop!
Chad, gives me consistently excellent hair cuts. New to Portland, I searched for a good cut for two years until I finally realized that the best cuts were only a few blocks away at Rough Cut Barber Shop.
Great haircut from Marko. Low key, laid back and all walk-in trade. Will be back again!
Great haircut. Great price. Very very nice lady that owns and cuts everyones hair.
Great vintage barbershop. If you see a few people waiting their turn, put your name on the blackboard at the end of the shop.
Bad cut, wont go back.
Consistent. Friendly. Professional. Reasonable. Clean. Intuitive. Everyone is great. Marko is my guy.
Since moving to the states from Australia this has become my new regular hairdresser. Nice and no fuss in a cool environment.
Super friendly neighborhood barber shop
One of my best friends cuts my hair routinely and its next to to an incredible pub if I wait.
I’ve been a loyal customer for almost 2 years now. But the way I was treated today is not tolerable. I’ve always got my haircut from the same person (I don’t want to mention names here) that’s why I feel sorry that I have to rate the whole shop rather than the action of one person. The reason why I will never set foot in this place anymore is because the barber who I always went to, treated me extremely bad today. I asked for minor changes at the end of the haircut but the way he responded was offensive and rude. I am not a person who get’s offended easily but calling me out for not being precise in my instructions, talking to me like I did something wrong and then being offensive about the English word that I used that apparently doesn’t exist (I apologize for being an expat and non-native speaker and maybe my accent makes it a bit harder to understand) is not acceptable. There are plenty of other good barbers around here that wouldn’t treat a loyal customer like that. If you have a “rough” (get it? ;) ) day, don’t put it out on your customers.
Excellent place to get your hair done. Cozy environment, friendly and competent staff.
I drive 2 hrs for a great cut and love it.
( My First Experience 8-16-15 )One of the most unprofessional places... or, i should say, one of the most unprofessional people who happen to work as a barber at this establishment.Nicole : Green and RudeI walked in there today and a woman with green hair named Nicole was sitting in one of the barber chairs with a magazine glued to her very pinched face. I said Hi, can i get a basic trim and asked the cost of a cut/trim ? she answered back with an unfriendly response and a lackluster attitude. Another person was there, a male (Chad) he was on his phone and was minding his own business. Very neutral in his attitude. i should have asked him for his services, now in retrospect.Anyway, i sat in the chair, By the way the place itself is a beautiful Barber shop, classic looking, thought i was going to have a very unique experience...eh, and i did.Nicole asked me what i would like.I explained that i would like a trim : only on the sides and back. nothing else, no fancy fades, shaped, buzzes. keep the top untouched. i said in reference (disconnected pompadour ) to those kinds of cuts you see on men these days where the top is longer with sides and back shorter, but i would like mine to be more un-kept and longer looking. Long story short, she was asking me questions about the cut, like she was not understanding my requests about how i would like this trim. I restated how i would like it, i also explained how i didnt want it as well. She became more sharp in her voice, her demeanor became more passive aggressive and animated (which i guess was better than her almost dead demeanor when i walked in)She clamped my hair up top, started on the left side as she sprayed the hair to be trimmed. then she asked about the hair along my ears, by this time, i was over it, now i was starting to get agitated.Took a deep breathe and i just repeated what i asked before reminding her that i didnt want trimmers, buzzes, fades. The thing was, she was NOT listening to me. she was wanting to cut my hair in a way that made sense to her, and NOT wanting to cut my hair in a way that i wanted or made sense to me. I decided this was not going to work for either of us, it is my money and i dont have to be uncomfortable. i told her - i was done, and got up to remove the cover across me.She became super nasty and told me to GET OUT!i was rather shocked at the loud angry way she came at me. i pointed out that she just yelled at me, and she told me - I was rude and to get out again.I told her she was actually very rude and that what made a good hair dresser is a good listener. Again she yelled, GET OUT! i was on my way out the door. I passed by Chad who was still outside taking a break on his phone.( i think)I was so upset at her allegation, cause it was not at all fair.she was clearly projecting her own shortcomings, cause the whole time i was in that Barber Shop she was passive aggressive. ( rude)i know i was not rude. i know when i am rude, and i know how to be very rude. i have been to many hair salons these days. And i have never been rude, even during frustration i make it a point to never get rude, mean, angry.Today i try and practice some kindness as a part of some healing for myself. it took everything for me not to verbally smash her. She has no clue how lucky she is that i didnt take it to the next level.Personally, im proud of myself that i kept on walking. I saved myself an awful experience.Again, this Barber showed no skills in her hair cutting ability to me.However she is highly skilled at being a control freak, passive aggressive, bad listener who used projecting tactics to save her own ignorant face.Youre in the clear if she actually smiles, then again, just to be safe, go to Chad.
Used to be better, they have many new barbers and its a bit of a hit or miss depending on whom you get.
Great cut from Marko. Minus one star as the place smells mildewy.
NY-native Nicole gives an excellent cut, has real talent. I have gone to her for 4 years.
Great haircut! Highly recommend, idk what the other person who gave this a bad review was talking about
Excellent cut and great people.
Thanks for the killer haircut Marko. He took his time through my thick hair which many barbers do not. Thanks!!
If you ask for a buzz they will charge you extra because they might choose to use trimmers. Got a buzz and my sides are obviously choppy. Came to bishops to get fixed
Went here to fix a butchered cheap cut from barber king, they did a great job here!
Walked in first time waited for about 15 min and got a haircut. It was great and the way I wanted it cut.
Not getting greeted after walking in and having a seat for a minute or two, and being looked at as though I dont belong, is a no go for me. I instantly felt out of place and unwelcomed. Unfortunately, I dont have a review of a haircut, as I left before getting service.
Great little shop.
An excellent haircut in an excellent barebones setting. Since the last reviewer posted (over a year ago), they started accepting payments via Square.
Great cut by old neighborhood stand by
Skillful and quick barbers, walk in only, ask for Nate.
This place has been around forever, since the 1940s I think. But your haircut depends a lot on who is cutting your hair.
Cool place for a cut!
If you are dude looking for a mans haircut, ask for Marko.
I had no idea it was cash only. After the haircut I had to go to a grocery store and buy some gum and get cash back. That left a sour taste in my mouth.
Great hair cut. Great people.
Great personalized service.
Unironically Portlands best barber
Great staff
The ladies at Rough Cut are great
Veronica is the best.
Marko is the best!
