I really liked living here, but rating it lower than I would because of the noise. You can hear literally everything that happens above and surrounding your apartment. Whether it’s vacuuming at 2am or hearing a breakup next door. The train and hospital helicopter are also clearly audible. The location is great, and management is really amazing. The courtyard is really well kept and nice to hang out in.

Shadyside Commons is an amazing place to live. The exposed brick and spiral staircases are beautiful and the wooden ceiling beams add coziness. The outdoor patio is great for hanging out with friends and grilling. One of the best parts of Shadyside Commons is the wonderful office staff, Katie and Kathleen, who set up fun (and covid safe) events for the residents. The location is great too, it’s super close to grocery stores and Target. It’s also a really quiet and peaceful place, without much noise. All in all, I really enjoy living here and highly recommend.

Living at Shadyside commons has been amazing! The loft apartments are very stylish and attractive with the exposed brick and spiral staircase. Staff on site (Katie and Kathleen) are extremely friendly and helpful. There are fun monthly events and quite often yummy treats provided for residents. Most importantly, couldnt have asked for a better location!

Shadyside Commons is a wonderful place to live. The apartment units themselves are lovely, with brick walls, and wood beam ceilings, but the best part is the people who work here. Kathleen and Katie are such friendly people, they plan excellent events/treats (safe for the times of course), and really just make this place feel like home. Im so happy to be a resident of Shadyside Commons!

Shadyside Commons is a great place to live. The neighborhood is a quiet, safe place which is especially important to those of us who have dogs who need to go out for walks. The building is quiet, very clean, and pet friendly. Residents, which mostly comprise working professionals and grad students, instead of undergraduates, create a friendly calm environment. No large loud groups of people or parties. Everyone is very respectful of Covid restrictions. The best part of Shadyside Commons is the office staff, Katie and Kathleen, who always greet you with a smile and are very helpful. They plan monthly (Covid safe) events for the residents, like food trucks, which are always fabulous. Each resident even received a really unique gift bag at the end of the year for the holidays. Also, want to give a shoutout to the maintenance staff, who are always helpful, friendly and go above and beyond. Look no farther for your next residence.

I’ve lived in 12 different apartments across multiple cities. I love how unique this building is! Exposed brick, spiral staircase, the lobby, gym, outside space. It’s great! The staff, particularly Katie, are amazing. Super helpful, friendly and kind. They really try to make apartment living feel like living in a home. Appreciate the special touches like complementary coffee, farmer market veggies, breakfast and lunches. And holiday events! A secret and hidden gem in the heart of Shadyside!

This is a century-old factory building on the Oakland side of Shadyside that has been converted to loft apartments. The apartments have a fun industrial feel with exposed brick and HVAC. The building is walking distance to UPMC Shadyside, Pitt, CMU, and the restaurants and shops on Walnut Street. What really sets the place apart is the management and staff. They work really hard to make the place special, for example, organizing food trucks, events, and special gifts for holidays. I have nothing but positive things to say about the staff: Katie and Kathleen have been terrific -- they are thoughtful and kind as well as being extremely competent. In my experience they treat residents like they would want to be treated themselves. Their general approach to managing Shadyside Commons has made my stay here my best experience in apartment living.

I can’t believe the negative feed back I was reading about my past home! I lived in Pittsburgh for five years and tried three different Pittsburgh apartment communities! I see a lot of people mentioning noise, in my experience, when living in apartment complex we’ve ALWAYS heard our neighbors no matter what kind it complex we lived in. It’s one of the cons of living in a complex opposed to a house but I loved it! I loved the people and the sense of “community”. We found the difference between the commons and others is it seems like more working professionals and grads rather than undergrads like most places. There aren’t large loud groups of people or parties which is something we definitely didn’t want. The residents, office staff and Maitenence have always been so helpful and go above and beyond to fill our needs! I’ll miss living here!!!!

My boyfriend and I decided to move to Pittsburgh upon finishing our undergraduate degrees in May 2020, and we toured multiple apartment communities in different neighborhoods. Shadyside was our third tour and we immediately started picturing what furniture would go where, the only place we did that on our seven different tours. Katie was EXTREMELY helpful, and allowed us to tour a second time during our quick visit in March 2020. We were originally looking to move in mid-May 2020, but due to COVID-19, our last half of the semester was online and Katie helped us move our move-in date to early April, within 48 hours of us deciding we were going to move in May. She and Kathleen helped answer all of our questions, and Dennis and Z (the maintenance gods) are incredibly helpful and friendly, especially to our puppy! The people in the building are extremely kind and welcoming, helping us find good vet options and off-leash dog areas. The package room is secure, and organized according to floor, making it very easy to find any and all packages! The building is also within easy walking distance to Walnut, which has great local shopping and eating. If youre looking for your new home in Pittsburgh, look no further than Shadyside Commons. The ONLY downside for our specific unit (third floor/top floor) is that we are on the train side, which can be a bit noisy. However, the only time it is annoying is when its a beautiful day out and we want the windows open.

Shadyside Commons is a wonderful apartment building and my husband and I lived there the entire time we lived in Pittsburgh. The staff is absolutely amazing and will go above and beyond to meet your every need. They care deeply about each resident. Dennis and Z are fantastic maintenance guys and genuinely nice people. Angela and Kathleen are excellent communicators, compassionate, kind and fabulous property managers. The location of the building is great. Very close to just about everything. The kitchens are beautiful and huge - my husband and I really like to cook so this was important to us. I do wish there was more than one elevator, that the stairwells were a little cleaner and that the washer and dryer were a little newer, but overall we had a truly wonderful experience here. The apartments are beautiful and I was so happy to call this place home for two years.

Pros:+Great location+Stylish apartments+Nice peopleCons:-Noise: Living on the first floor is almost unbearable. Through the exposed floor joist ceiling, you will hear every single footstep, chair slide, or other noise from your upstairs neighbor.Recommendation: Do not live on 1st floor! Otherwise a nice place.

My wife and I moved into Shadyside Commons in July of 2017. The unit we are in has been excellent. We love the exposed brick of the unit, and all of the amenities that the building offers. The secure package room, the inner courtyard with a grill, the clean facilities, the gym, and the fast response to maintenance requests have all made our life much easier, especially when we first moved to Pennsylvania from Massachusetts. The best amenity, however, has been the staff. Angela and Kathleen are always eager to help us whether it be by shipping a package for us, answering questions about the area, or throwing fun holiday/themed events for the residents with complimentary food and drink. Theyve helped make Shadyside Commons feel like a home for the past two year.

The staff is very professional and respectful. All of them are always eager to respond to any issue promptly. In terms of the space, the building is beautiful; I love the history behind it. Also, many units have exposed brick and high ceilings which gives them a lovely character. Overall, my experience living in Shadyside Commons has been excellent.

I lived here for the entire time I was in Pittsburgh. Ive felt welcomed and loved throughout the time I was there. The staff there were helpful and understanding and they were really trying their best to accommodate any needs I may have! They care about the tenants who are staying in the community, and they want them to feel like home. My journey at Pittsburgh wont be the same without their support! Sad that Im leaving the building, but they are by far the best management team I ever had!

First of all, I am not a resident, but I came across this nice building while I was searching for my next apartment. This is in general a nice apartment to live in. But I would caution the following points before one decides to live here:1. This is actually an old building, although it made some efforts to renew it. e.g. I could clearly hear the sound of wood crunching when people walk upstairs.2. A lot of units are of unconventional floorplan, including a loft. Some 1b1b are also not conventional, which might not be suitable for someone looking for a regular floorplan. But of course, if you would like try new things, this is a godo place to start! However, the staff are nice and people there are friendly, and I highly recommend you at least give it a try.

The office staff seemed great at first, but the longer you live there the more it seems they only care about bring in new people to fill apartments and you no longer matter to them. The office staff used to be a big strength of the building but that has declined very much so in the last year or 2. I would recommend staying away from shadyside commons.

I have lived in the building for over 5 years and have noticed a significant decline in the quality over the last 1-2 years. I used to be incredibly satisfied and would have recommended the building (and have actually brought many friends to the build) but i would no longer do this. The office staff response to tenant issues has become horrendous. They seem to only care about bringing in new tenants and making a good impression to them, but will shrug off complaints from current tenants.I feel as though this lackadaisical approach from the office staff also is represented in the new tenants being brought to the building. This is represented by people smoking in non-smoking areas including the courtyard and balconies where cigarette butts can be regularly found. You also find dog owners who will keep their large dogs (which appear to be larger than the upper weight limit for pets allowed in the building) off of their leashes and can be aggressive toward my small dog. Also, when the decision was made to begin upgrading apartment homes in the building we were told we would be allowed to continue living in our current apartments and would not be forced to move. Well this now changed and people are being forced into newer more expensive units.Overall the only saving grace of the building at this time are the maintenance staff Dennis and Z. I would not recommend this building to any of my friends.

Im sorry that the last couple of reviewers have had negative experiences at Shadyside Commons, because my experience has been anything but. I have lived in the community for 20 years (!), and I can say that the office staff are THE BEST its ever been since I moved in. So as a VERY well-tenured tenant, I sincerely believe that I have the authority to say with certainty that the staff absolutely DO CARE about current tenants needs. The endless treats and showers of affection that various tenants routinely shower on them is proof positive of this.I cannot speak to the blanket quality of current tenants, but I can say that my experience has always been that if there is any kind of issue with tenants being disruptive or otherwise problematic, the staff very quickly do their best to address it as satisfactorily as possible.Regarding the upgrades: as someone who is being affected by the upgrades (i.e., needing to move into a new unit), I must say that this is simply a fact of living in a building that has a long history and is changing with the times. I have lived in the SAME UNIT for my 20 years, and realize that for the sake of consistency across the entire building, all units MUST be upgraded while materials are still available, lest you get units that dont quite match at the base level. Did you honestly think youd just continue to live in an old outdated unit for years after everything else has been remodeled? And with these upgrades comes a higher value, hence the increased cost. This has nothing to do with the staff or the management being greedy, and everything to do with them simply making sound business decisions. The only thing that is changing is the base rent: any and all fees either remain exactly the same (pet, parking), or are even WAIVED for current tenants (e.g., new/transferring leases). I will miss my old unit, but can say, again with certainty, that the staff have gone above and beyond to ensure that my move occurs as seamlessly as possible. So whoever might read this: please do not allow the few negative reviews to color your perception of the property. It offers a sense of home and personability that you simply cannot get with other luxury apartments. Its located right in a neighborhood (theres a school around the corner!), and not in a developing busy area of town with lots of traffic and transience like so many other so-called comparable properties. Its homey, welcoming, and Ive been so lucky to have called it home for 20 years (as have MANY OTHER tenants... so dont discount the importance of those who have planted their roots), and am excited as I call it home in a new way with my new unit, for many more years to come.

I am not sure if I got the previous reviewer Rebeccas apartment but I am experiencing the same noise as she described. In my case, the noise from upstairs runs 24 hours. Their bedtime routine runs from 12 AM - 2:40 AM everyday. During that time period, I get loud cracking noise from the ceiling (probably from them walking), knocking sound from shoe bottom hitting their floor, small and big things dropping on their floor and metal vibrating sounds. (This is after I complained their vacuuming at 12:30 AM.) During the day, the noise level does not drop but the time when noise comes spreads out. I think their dog also contributed a lot of these noise through playing. Pretty sure a lot of things dropping on their floor are by the dog.As mentioned by another reviewer, the exposed floor joist ceiling is really a problem for people living below someone. Strongly recommend the building management do something on the ceiling design.
