Both my sons have been coming for a year now and have gained confidence both physically and mentally. I’m very thankful for the effort Coach Tim and Robbie put towards the boys well being, as they do with all their students both adult and kids. These young men are learning commitment, self defense and self respect in an environment that wants you to succeed but makes you earn it.
This is not just a gym, its a family. You feel welcomed and part of group. A community of people working on learning and advancing their skills while also being open to helping you grow as well. Im really fortunate to have build a strong connection to many of my training partners and I value Tim Petersons attentiveness & car of his students.
There are a lot of good martial arts gyms in the LA area. Not many have really great facilities and high-level instruction like Robot does. But the community here really sets this gym apart. It turns out it is possible to have a room full of real killer competitors who are also super chill and welcoming.
After two years with the Robot family, this is definitely a long due review. There are so many positive things about this place that I will try to organize them the best I can:1) The level of detail in each class is insane. At first, this actually threw me off as I came from a gym where you “learn” something new pretty much every day. After two years of training under coach Tim, I now realize the importance of really digesting each technique over longer periods. At Robot, you will review the same move for weeks at the time, which allows you to polish small details that you would never think of if you were to drill a technique only a couple of times a week. By the time you finish covering that specific material, you have a real grasp of what you are supposed to do.2) All coaches, staff, and gym partners try to make you feel welcomed and part of the community. At other gyms, I remember feeling that people only cared about collecting my membership fees. At Robot, coaches and staff will greet you by name from day one… and they will never forget it (for real!). I think this speaks to the type of gym culture that Robot tries to cultivate. This is also reflected in your gym mates’ behavior, as they are always willing to help. Big egos/unpleasant people are very rare (if there’s any) at this place.3) Robot is a no-bs gym, period. You don’t have to buy an expensive gi with the gym logo. There’s no need to follow strict mat etiquette. You don’t have to pay for belt promotions or anything like that. It’s just so refreshing to find a chill place like this.4) Gym owners understand that things happen in life and that you may not be able to train for some time. I have been able to put my membership on hold when I was abroad for some months. After recently having a knee injury that needed surgery, I was able to put a new hold. No extra fees, no questions asked. Having this peace of mind is great! In short, this is an amazing place to train!
Ive been training BJJ for 16 years, traveled quite a bit and have been to dozens of academies in the US, Brazil, Thailand and Australia...Im a black belt and consider myself to be quite on the technical and cerebral side of JJ.OR AT LEAST... I THOUGHT I was... and then I went to Tim Petersons BJJ classes, and realized how much deeper than I thought the rabbit hole goes. This guy is on another, out-of-this-world level of understanding of body mechanics.Add to that:Super friendly and non formal environmentMany high level students (often 3+ black belts in class)Super female friendly, with strong female competitorsSuperb hygiene and great showersPerfect score all around!!!
As a professional educator with previous martial arts experience, it was important to me to find an instructor who is continuing to learn not only about the craft, but how best to teach it. Coach Tim is infinitely patient, creative, caring and intellectually curious. Ive been here 5 years and love it!
Robot Fight & Fitness is awesome. Everyone there is super cool and welcoming, they made it really easy for someone like me, who is a total novice, to get into class and really start wrapping my head around BJJ. Totally recommend this place to anyone at any level looking to train. And, total bonus, theyre dog friendly!
Robot is a family-friendly, welcoming, no-nonsense gym with great coaches and students that care about one another. I’ve drifted through a few martial arts experiences in my life, but this is the first one that I’ve settled down in - for over a year now - and I credit Tim (the head coach and owner) with that. He has created a clean, focused and convenient space that cuts through all of the formality and decorum of other gyms while keeping the camaraderie and discipline that make BJJ so great. I would recommend this gym to beginners and experts alike - both are present in this community. Thank you for helping me fulfill a lifelong dream of developing a martial art!
Can honestly say that I dont have to ever think about working out or restricting calories since I found this place. I feel so much more confident in my ability to protect myself, empowered in my new understanding of the art of learning, and love that I am part of such a grounded and connected community of cool, diverse people. The space is beautiful and open, you can tell all the coaches are passionate about what they do. This place is the opposite of corporate in the best possible way. A true community center that will help you reach your fitness/self-defense/ training and even life goals! No hard sales, just awesome value and service.
It does not have the fanciest or newest facilities or equipment but has everything you need at a very good price. They have a fantastic yoga teacher who has biweekly classes after work. Close to work and friendly staff are always willing to help.
Friendly and supportive atmosphere. The instructors, Tim, Laercio and David are not only great instructors, but awesome human beings. You get great training, a professional staff, and an amazing facility when you train at Robot!
We brought our entire u12 team to engage in a Championship Mindset training session with coach Tim. 11 out of our 12 member team had never tried Jiujitsu before. Tim took their intrepidation and turned it into possitive, fun energy and through the course of the lesson our team learned some profound lessons about what it means to compete and and be a competitor. We can not say enough about our experience. Epic!
A well respected gym in the area. Professor Tim Peterson was recommended to me by a trusted black belt because I had moved to Playa Vista/Santa Monica area from San Francisco. Of the few classes I did, I think he wouldve been a great coach for me. He is very detailed, friendly and also rolled with the students, who are also talented--some even compete, and I heard fighters come from abroad to train there.Robot is probably one of the biggest bjj gyms in LA (no mat issues running into people or poles, lol), and rare that it also has MMA AND a great strength program (with benches, kettlebells and more). I really enjoyed and found a lot of value in Coach Aarons classes, which were very customized (more people should attend, theyre priceless!). He knows a lot of the latest techniques in fitness, pays attention to form, has a background in fighting and I think I wouldve got a lot stronger quickly.......but unfortunately and unexpectedly I didnt join. I found an opportunity this month in the OC to move in with a good friend who I work with.I was so close to joining and I appreciate everyone at Robot for having me. Just call Emmie at the front desk --she is super sweet and accommodating. Thanks again
My home gym. Decided on Robot after visiting many surrounding gyms. Am a member for 7 years and never had a regret.
Came to a BJJ class by Tim while in town for business. Great instruction, great rolling, great facility. Ill be back whenever Im in town.
Food is ok our waitress was not very friendly recieved burnt hash browns was told thats how they make them.
Ive been at Robot Fight and Fitness for a very long time. I can honestly say its hands down the best place to train and be a part of. The coaches are all amazing and willing to stop to help you with any questions you may have from the biggest to the smallest. Coach Tim and Coach Huerta are both amazing head instructors and Luke, Domo and Robbie are equally as great. It doesnt matter what belt you are or how good you are at muay thai everyone is willing to train with you and it makes huge difference. The strength and conditioning classes are on point as well. The culture of the gym is like Ive never seen, we all support each other at the fights but have a great time at bbqs on the weekend organized by the gym or another member. It truly is a family. If youre looking for a great place to train everyday of the week and want train with great people I would suggest you join Robot.
Im entering my 3rd year at Robot Fight and Fitness. The facilities at Robot are top notch. Jiu Jitsu Coaches Tim, David, Luke, and Domo all bring something something unique to the techniques and philosophy of the art. I personally feel that while the coaches and gym itself warrant a 5 star rating, what really makes this gym truly special is the students. At Robot, you can roll with blue, purple, brown or black belts on any given day. Go as hard or as light as you want. Ask anyone for tips and they will help. There is no ego, there are no cliques, EVERYONE is welcome as long as you have a good attitude. Robot has been an extremely positive influence on my life. This Jiu Jitsu school has honestly made me a better man, brother, and son. Thanks Robot!
Robot kicks any other MMA /BJJ/Muay Thai/Crossfit gyms in West Los Angeles (because they have experts in each of those fields!) outta the water. The space is beautiful, the people are super cool, the instructors are passionate, the skill is beyond legit and the atmosphere makes it hard to NOT go to the gym. A first for me! Try a free class and youll see what I mean.
I found Robot because I live on the same street and decided to try something new. I started with the intro class and then moved on to BJJ. I have been training BJJ at Robot for about 8 months now and would absolutely continue, however I am moving to Texas.Robot has a very welcoming environment where everyone is invited in with open arms. Whether you are experienced or dont even know what brazilian jiu jitsu is, Robot is a great place to train (I didnt know what BJJ was!).Plain and simple, Coach Tim is a great instructor. His knowledge, ability to teach, and ability to show students all of the intricacies of BJJ is unparalleled. No matter how simple or difficult a students question is, he takes the time to hear and understand the question before providing the answer. Plus, he goes out of the way to remember everyones names which is crazy to me because I am horrible with names! When I initially started I did some research to find out what normal gyms charge and after reading a few blogs, Robot seems to be on the higher end of the spectrum. That being said, we do live in an expensive area so that comes with the territory. Plus, I would be willing to pay a premium for the exceptional instruction Tim provides.
Knowledgable instructors and great people are members here. They tend to attract more analytical people than your typical MMA meathead, probably because of their relationship with and proximity to UCLA.
Top notch martial arts and top notch performance training. I dont think anything can compare in the Southern California area.
Okey
