I had an early appointment which I missed. I called later, apologized and tried to reschedule with the lady on the phone. She handed it Lorena who wanted me in at 3. I said, Ill try to make it, but..., it was then that I was cut off and told with a disrespectful attitude, No, you arent trying to make it. You are coming in at 3 or not.Well, had she not cut me off at first, she would have heard me ask for another time instead. But bc Lorena seems to think that there arent another 12-15 barber shops in the same area, that she can talk to an adult as if they are her child. I told her bluntly, You know what? With an attitude like that, no thank you. She rattled off something, but I was hanging up already.Luis used to manage this place nicely. Its not the best looking barbershop in the area, but it was quaint and he always dealt with rude staff by showing them the door. He used to run this place respectfully because he understood his clientele.I have been here numerous times over the years. Luis and Gilbert alternated on cutting my hair. Unfortunately, they dont seem to work there any more. I think Luis has sold the shop.Anyways, I wont be coming back. For the area and the cost, I can be treated respectfully at many other places.

Consistently the best haircut in my area. Ive gone to other places when my schedule wouldnt allow me to make it to Avalon, and Ive always regretted it. My wife and I agree my hair always looks the best from Avalon. The stylists actually care about their craft and arent in a rush to get the next client in their chair. Highly recommend making an appointment as most people do and there could be a long wait as a walk in.

I just dropped by to see if they take walk ins, not knowing what to expect in River Oaks, and was really impressed with the old barber shop feeling with a shoe shine man and a barber that told me straight, I have enough time for a hair cut, but if you need your beard trimmed youll have to get in line. Luis cut and layered my hair just perfectly and the family chatter in the room with a young man playing an accordion and the TV in the back ground shot me back in time to when my father went to the barber every week. Thanks Luis, keep up the good work

I had been using a shear to buzz my hair, but things changed and I was in need of a professional look.Gilbert delivered.Gilbert has been cutting hair since his days in the Air Force back in 1958. He loves what he does, and enjoys conversation. However he can take a hint if you want peace and quiet. He has a great sense of humor, and I suspect hell take to mine in the future.

The first thing you need to know about the barbers at Avalon is, they are BARBERS. I came home, in 2012, and began shaving my head. I found out, in short order, if you want to have a professional use a straight razor, on you, for that super close shave, you MUST go to a licensed barber. Licensed stylists are not allowed to use a straight razor. ALL of the pros at Avalon are licensed barbers. It is also a step back in time. It appears old school, and old-fashioned, because it is. Im assuming it opened in the 50s, and hasnt changed much. You cannot go wrong with any of the staff. All are friendly, and highly skilled.

Like walking back in time to when haircuts were given by people who care about you and what you look like when you walk out of the shop. Pride in a job well done. A job thats not rushed and is done with precision. This was a real gem of a place and a real pleasure for this traveler from Virginia to find during my short stay in Houston. Ill be back!
