My boyfriend and I had to put down our sweet boy, Wrigley, in April. It was one of the hardest things we have ever had to do. To this day, we are forever thankful we left him in such good hands, since we couldn’t be there while he crossed over. Kristi was amazing and we could tell she loved our sweet boy in the short amount of time she got to know him. We are forever grateful for her and her team at Blue Pearl. It’s not an easy job to do.

Our little pup was hit by a car this morning. All our local Vet offices were closed but Blue Pearl Pet Hospital was open and the moment we walked in the door they immediately took her back and gave her the TLC attention she needed. Very professional service and excellent communication. Highly recommend for emergency pet needs. Happy to report my little 7# maltipoo is back home safe and recovering.

This place is horrible. Full of false hope. If you want your baby to die here this is where you should go. If you want false hope then this is the place. They tell you your baby has a 90%chance of recovery on the day of surgery and then the next day probably a 50% chance of recovery. Okay wheelchair. We will figure it out. And the next day they say you need to come up because your dog is dying. He has had a rare post operative complication. Did anyone say anything before this surgery that this was a possibility. Nope. So a bill goes from 6200 from one day to 7200 the next day and you still leave heartbroken without your baby.

80 DEGREES INSIDE A HOSPITAL FOR SEVERAL DAYS IN A ROW, non-disaster area. HOW IS THAT GOOD FOR THE HOSPITALIZED PETS?!?! I was there recently with a dog that was having breathing problems. THE STAFF WAS GREAT, the only problem is that it was SO HOT IN THE BUILDING! This is a hospital right? It was 80 degrees in the lobby. The receptionists had the lights off up front and the doors to the back were open to help create a draft. I actually had to go IN MY CAR to cool off. How is that healthy for pets who are sick to be in there?? The staff was doing the best they could but my goodness, for such a large corporation they cant properly cool their building?!? The staff gets 5 stars but Blue Pearl the company gets -1 star for not being able to maintain their building. Their PRICES ARE HIGH ENOUGH to think that a GIANT CORPORATION could maintain their HVAC system in a hospital. I WENT BACK TWO DAYS LATER AND IT IS STILL ABOVE 80 DEGREES.

I hope no one ever needs the services of an emergency vet, but if you do I cannot recommend one more strongly than the staff, doctors and technicians at BluePearl. In the past 8 months we’ve had two major health episodes among our 5 pets and BluePearl has been a literal life saver for us. Our cat ate a painkiller belonging to one of our dogs, and we immediately headed to BluePearl where they took care of him for three days. They gave us constant updates, let us call for checkins and never made us feel like we were being too much. They walked us through every step of the process, including a wide range of cost estimates and outcomes. Emergency vets by nature are expensive and these guys are worth every penny. Our cat is still with us thanks to them. They are helping with our new puppy right now, she is just a little too fond of eating things she shouldn’t. It’s so much easier to handle a crisis when you know you can rely on your care partners, so thanks again to BluePearl for giving us peace of mind and excellent care. While I hope we never meet again, I’m so thankful you’ll be there if we need you.

I have a very, very over protective almost 2 year old doberman/ rottweiler who lunges and barks at strangers. We called head of time to let them know we were coming and asked if they had a muzzle for their safety. We get there and they give us the muzzle and proceed to tell us how to put it on the wrong way eventually telling us to flip it over, finally we get it on adjusted and safe they take her to the back. They talk to us about cost and thats to be expected (24 hour emergency vet clinic totally understood) what get me is 3 mins later the dr comes out and tells us he is unable to examine my dog due to her moving around to much( ok understood ) also not allowed to go back and help due to potential bites (shes muzzled but ok) they wouldnt examine her with out sedation tacking on another amount to our bill so they offered to just send us to another vet clinic so we did and went toys to us a muzzle there as well IVS and they took her in and allowed their tech to sit with her and she ended up making a new friend she cuddled with him and even slipped her muzzle and allowed him to fix it with out a fuss she became protective over him to so anytime a new person would enter the room she would get growly again but over all going to blue peral would not reccomend for anyone with a protective or aggresive dog unless you want that extra cost tacked on

For my cat’s latest vaccine, I decided to try a new clinic (on Mills Civic) closer to home than my old one in Waukee. A few months later, my cat grew what turned out to be a malignant tumor at the site of the injection, right between her shoulder blades. I brought her in for a surgery consultation. I was told that this type of tumor cannot be completely eradicated due to how it roots/weaves itself into the body. It’s not what I wanted to hear, but the doctor was incredibly kind, empathetic, and patient in explaining everything and answering my frequently incoherent questions I attempted through snot and tears. Thank you.

It genuinely felt like they DID NOT CARE when delivering the news, instead they seemed irritated that I was upset. The suspicions about their lack of care was confirmed when I went to pick up his ashes today and they couldnt even spell his NAME correctly... They didnt even care enough to spell his name right. Im devastated. Im sitting here looking at his box of ashes wondering if its even him in there and its tearing me up inside. AVOID taking your animals here...

I cannot say enough about how kind and wonderful this team is. We took our puppy in at 4 AM and they got her in right away. Her symptoms had subsided, but they still checked her out and gave us possible explanations and options. We went home feeling much better and without spending a thing. When I sent video later that morning of her cough, they called me shortly after to talk more about possible causes and treatment. Im so glad to know that I can count on them whenever the need arises - especially grateful on a holiday weekend when the regular vets are closed.

Horrible female vet wanted to euthanize our cat instead of treating her because she was elderly. Rude, arrogant, talked over and interrupted us multiple times. Tried to bully us into euthanasia telling us she knew more about our cat of 14 years than us or our regular vet. When that didnt work she tried to scare us with the outrageous price of treatment. Sickening, disgusting experience. This woman should not be a vet! Cant imagine how many people she has bullied into premature euthanasia. We couldnt get our cat out of that place and away from that woman fast enough. She should have her license revoked!

Bluepearl got my dog right in first available and did surgery the same day as the exam. My dog had already been suffering in pain and on meds for a month already .I was so thankful they got him in quickly and did surgery right away to get my puppy relief. The doctor and staff were wonderfully professional and kind. Although owners aren’t allowed in at this time (COVID precautions) I was reassured that she was comfortable and she tolerated her assessment well. My pup was diagnosed with bilateral ear infection, prescribed ear drops and discharge instructions for close follow up w her regular vet in one week. For the second time in three years, BluePearl saved our cat. Once when he swallowed a needle and the other when he had a full urinary blockage. Hopefully you will never need an emergency vet, but if you do, I recommend BluePearl. You get quality treatment for your pet, and they work with and take care of you, the owner, as well. From multiple daily updates, texts with photos of your pet so you can see how theyre doing, and fully disclosing all costs (no, emergency vet care is not cheap, but if you look on-line youll see their emergency services are not out of line at all) and necessary treatments.... they make a stressful situation as manageable as possible. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse & she was deteriorating quickly so we rushed her to the emergency vet where they put her on a Stretcher & rushed her inside all while showing her so much love. They gave her fluids & did a basic ultrasound & unfortunately she was too far gone & she was in multiple organ failure. Dr. Larsen who was working that night was so compassionate & caring towards us and our dog. She worked with us on pricing so we were able to euthanize her & get her cremated that night so she wouldn’t have to continue to suffer. Dr. Wagner called us after the surgery to tell us about the exact procedure that took place and what to expect as a recovery plan when we took our dog home and we could call him directly if we had questions. Staff were prompt with communication and call backs for updates on how our dog was doing with the TPLO surgery. If they said they would call in 2 hours, they sure did on the dot! Upon picking up our dog after surgery, the staff were attentive to our questions and took great care of our black Lab after surgery. It was another week before we could get an appointment for a ct scan. When I dropped my dog off for the scan, I thought my next conversation with Dr. Vaske would be about treatment options, but during the scan, Dr. Vaske realized the size of the tumor meant there would likely be no need for a biopsy. She called to give me the bad news and then gave me time to process the news. In this time of Covid, I wish I had prepared myself for a conversation regarding euthanasia. The time it took to get our appointments at Bluepearl and negotiating the necessary Covid precautions were the worst aspects of our Bluepearl experiences. I expected our visits to be expensive, and they were, but I felt like Dr. Vaske and her team tried to reduce the costs where possible. Most of all, I felt like Dr. Vaske and the team taking care of my dog cared about him, and because of that, I would not hesitate to take an animal to Bluepearl again. Yesterday my Pomeranian started acting completely unlike herself. She was lethargic, having trouble focusing, breathing oddly, and just overall unwell. I called her regular vet, knowing they would be closed, to find out what emergency vet to call. There were two numbers listed on their voicemail and I called the first one: BluePearl. The woman who answered the phone was super pleasant, helpful, and gave us all the info we needed. We left immediately and got there within 20 minutes. We didnt have to wait too long before being able to take our puppy inside and while I hated having to put her in a kennel and return to the car, I understand the COVID precautions in place. After about 15 minutes, I received a call from the vet tech who asked general questions about what was going on, her medical history, and how long she had been acting odd. This was where our experience started to go downhill. The next question the tech asked me was if she could have gotten into marijuana.I immediately responded with an emphatic no. He continued to ask and to assure me he wouldnt judge me, he just wanted to provide the best care for my pet. I understand and appreciate that these things happen and after thinking about it, I realized we live in an apartment complex and she goes to the bathroom outside and we take her on walks, so I couldnt be 100% sure that she hadnt gotten into any. I told that to the tech, who told me that their marijuana screening tests werent very accurate and that they could do bloodwork at a cost of $200 to $300.Hearing that the tox screens werent very reliable, I immediately agreed to the bloodwork. After another 45 minutes, the vet who examined my dog called. She began by telling me it was either marijuana toxicity, or something really serious. My husband and I were told they could do further diagnostics, or we could take her home since the bloodwork came back normal. The problem I had with this entire experience was that I was completely ignored. It seems that they decided it was marijuana toxicity and werent really interested in looking at other possibilities. And, even though that was their suspected diagnosis and what they believed the problem to be, at no point were my husband and I given any options for treatment. They sent us home with paperwork that mentions charcoal and pushing fluids in the event of marijuana ingestion, but they never mentioned those to us as possible treatments for our dog - they just told us to take her home to a dark room.My main frustration was that I was not listened to or heard. And that we kept getting told that they just wanted to take care of my pet. I believe them about wanting to care for her, but ignoring me or not listening to me doesnt exactly align with wanting the best for her. If I was willing to take her to an emergency vet, pay $369 for bloodwork and an exam, wouldnt it stand to reason that if I did know she had gotten into marijuana that I would be honest and tell them?My husband called when we got back to let them know how disappointed we were, and the woman he spoke with told him that they had already seen multiple cases that day of marijuana toxicity and that seemed to be the reason that they came up with that being what was wrong with our dog. Again, Im a rational person. I understand it happens and Im sure they do get lied to. However, if their tests are inaccurate enough for them to mention that the results arent reliable, why would I have paid for a test? And how are they absolutely sure thats what was going on with both my dog and the others there? I know they want to take care of animals and from other reviews, it seems they do.We decided to take her home and take her to her regular vet today. The ease of getting in was nice and they were 100% upfront about the costs. Still, if you find your pet needs to go there and you have any other option, I would avoid this place. Wanting the best for my dog includes listening to the people who know her best (my husband and I), and I dont feel like we were a consideration at all.

It was alright. Treated my baby okay. Hes pretty feisty and doesnt like new people. Especially if Im not with him. Covid just screws it all up. I know they have to be cautious. But theres cautious and then theres ridiculous. One of the only places I know that still does curbside. Multiple phone calls. Longer waiting times because I had to wait for the text message to pay. Upfront about costs which was nice. No payment plans. Not willing to work with you. So if you cant pay it all upfront then your pet isnt treated or helped? It was fine for a weekend visit, but not somewhere I would take him if I didnt absolutely have to.I brought him in because he hadnt eaten or drinken anything for 24 hours. Hed vomited this morning. Not acting like himself. First they tell me his stomach is tender so they do blood work and his kidney levels were elevated and his liver counts were elevated, but minimal. Then they tell me it seems like his back is more tender than his stomach. So the diagnosis is back pain? Uh what? Nothing on x-rays. Got sent home with pain meds for him. Will start a canned food diet. But definitely going to take him somewhere else if he gets any worse. All they care about is money and not about helping the animal.

We brought our dog there for an illness on a Saturday night when everything was closed. He was tested positive for Parvo. Fast forward a few days later, he is fine and ready to come home. We were told at one point that they were not able to collect a fecal on him before he left because his stool was too watery The minute he is home.. he has a non watery stool (literally the minute he is home) so we call them and ask if we can bring it in to be tested. They said absolutely.. bring it in tomorrow. So tomorrow rolls around and my husband runs the sample in and a different vet tells him that they cant take the sample because there is no point to it since he was dewormed. Say what? We were told to bring one in.. so this new vet calls me back and tries to convince me that a vet tech got a sample on him but forgot to tell the other vet and apparently must have forgotten to chart it as well. She did not see anything in the sample supposedly. Well we then got a fecal taken at our vet and he tested positive for coccidia. Guess there was a point to a fecal after all?? I personally would recommend another hospital if at all possible. Just something didnt feel right about this whole thing. $2,000 later.... we are still treating him for the same concerns (different diagnosis though) plus an added pneumonia to top it all off.

I only giving this facility a one as the office staff and initial veterinarian I spoke to was kind. I have been to this facility in the past and never was overly pleased but returned this time based on my Vets referral. I have a 2 year old French Bulldog who was experiencing significant shortness of breath. She does have Brachial-cephalic syndrome since she has a flat face. However she had surgery for this almost 2 years ago and has had no issues since. They placed my dog on oxygen to stabilize her. The first Vet mentioned several options she thought it might be was a full assessment needed to be done. Later that day a surgeon called to say she has laryngeal collapse which is common in these dogs. There was no good treatment and most live an average of 3.5 years. The next morning a third Vet called to say she did good over night. They were in the process of tapering off her oxygen then she could go home that afternoon. Later in the day after no call my daughter called them. This is when the nightmare truly began. This Vet was very rude, condescending and aggressive. I then spoke with her and she stated they had removed my dog to give her a bath since she “stepped” in feces. This caused her to become upset and they had to put her back on oxygen and were unable to take her off. I was confused as to why they would bathe her for dirty feet when she is already stressed unless she was not being watched and she was actually covered. Also what had so drastically changed from the first three providers. She was very matter of fact. She went on to say dogs like this have low thresholds and she is severe and she has never seen a dog like her leave the hospital before. When I mentioned it sounded like she was encouraging me to euthanize my dog she said “ I’m not saying it wouldn’t be a bad idea.” Needless to say I was in shock so given the late hour I opted to keep her there since it was late Saturday and other vets weren’t open. Sunday morning I received another call from the 5th vet now who continued to tell me my dog was stable in the oxygen kennel but could not be removed. When I questioned what was going on with her I was told “ I was told yesterday that you were told she has a very poor prognosis.” As if this should explain everything and I was over reacting. Once again I felt pressure to put her down. I decided I was going to go pick her up and take her someplace else. I called and spoke with the front staff requesting they get her ready. I received a very unpleasant message in my phone telling me once again how fragile my dog was. She was “highly oxygen dependent” and I was making a very concerning decision. My daughter and I arrived to pick her up. I had already contacted ISU and they were expecting us. My dog has been there before for other issues and has always received great care. The vet at BP went on to tell me again how detrimental taking her how if the oxygen would be and there was a strong possibility she would die. I have to say my daughter and I have never been more scared. I felt leaving her there meant sure death but this Vet was telling me she would easily die out of the kennel. I am not easily intimidated by medical situations as I am an RN and have practiced nursing over 20 years. Honestly I felt these Vets were bullies. I picked my dog up and my daughter drove us to Ames as fast as we could get there. My dog is very anxious normally but as soon as she was in my arms she quieted down and rested. This makes me question what her treatment there at BP was like. She is currently recovering at ISU. The Vets there were very supportive and empathetic. They informed me it would be impossible for them to have diagnosed her with laryngeal collapse without proper testing and scoping. It turns out she was misdiagnosed. She had another surgery to remove some of her soft pallet which had become enlarged again which was blocking her airway. She should come home soon. I hope my story prevents anyone else from this fear or unnecessarily losing their beloved pet. Please go somewhere other than Blue Pearl.

Dont ever take a pet to Blue Pearl 24hr Vet clinic. They faked my dogs labs so they could ask to run more test and make more money. Then they refused to prescribe her antibiotics. However, I knew thats what she needed. They wanted me to get more test and I refused. I took her to my vet and got antibiotics the next day, but that was too late. The infection was taking over and the antibiotics werent working. Being a nurse, I knew she still needed help. I started an IV on her to help maintain the vascular resistance. I called my vet, who had left for vacation and received some advice, ultimately making a decision to take Saph in. Iowa Veterinary Specialties(IVS) did an amazing job with Saph, triaging her and treating her immediately, without pushing for tests that werent necessary. The cost was the same for five different tests at IVS as it was for the fake blood work at Blue Pearl! At IVS her temp was 104. 9 even after antibiotic therapy at my vet (Startch Pet Hospital). Her actual bloodwork showed elevated WBC of 20,000 as well as other significant markers of infection. Always be the advocate for your pet. They almost cost Sapphire her life by their negligence. She might possibly have mental issues now because they allowed her to leave their clinic and not treat a temp of 105. She is admitted at IVS and staying over night to receive IV antibiotics, fluids, pain meds. Prayers are welcome. They wouldnt let me leave a No star rating, in order to leave my comment. - 5 stars for Blue Pearl vet center(Iowa veterinary referral center) .

I can’t put a no stars review so I had to chose 1. I had to take my dog there, due to my regular vet couldn’t take him and recommended Blue Pearl. He was very sick, they did a CBC, and said his platelets were low. They would need to do an X-ray to see what was going on, of course they couldn’t see anything so recommended a ultra sound to see if he possibly had cancer, as he was a candidate for a stroke as well. Of course you are going to say ok, because your are trying to save your fur kid. He was there for 5 days and all I got was uveitis and a possible GI bleed. He was sent home on a Monday morning and when I brought him home he couldn’t walk. I called and asked why he couldn’t walk and my response was, “well he walked just fine for us, maybe is excited to be home and away from us.” So I kenneled him, when I came home at lunch he crawled out of his kennel, due to him having a problem standing, he finally got his bearings and went out to potty. But he walked funny. He was so small as he lost so much weight while he was there, his collar no longer fit him. On that Wednesday, after spending over $3000.00., I came home to a seizing dog. I had no idea how long he had been seizing, the last time I had seen him was at 1:15. I had to go back to work. He seized the whole time I was driving him back to Blue Pearl, as again my regular vet had no one to see him, and sent me back there. My little boy was critical, 105 temp and brain damage as how they explained it to me in so many words. I WILL NEVER recommend Blue Pearl, as your fur kid will never survive. I had a friend that had the same experience there. Her dog passed 2 months after spending $2600. For them to basically tell them nothing.

My sweet baby Hudson got very sick and we had to decide to put him to sleep. IVRC was so kind and helped with the process. We decided to keep his ashes and they made a paw print one in clay and the other on a beautiful poem. Losing Hudson has been the hardest thing I have ever been through. We receive Hudsons ashes about 5 days later they were put in a beautiful wooden box with loving memory. Thank you to the people at IVRC for the unexpected beautiful box and the card that came in the mail several days later signed by everyone at the clinic. I personally think they lacked compassion and repeatedly discussed what it took to run a business more than what we could do to get my cat stabilized. I also feel they are dishonest as they required me to sign a document that stated it was against doctors recommendations to take my cat home and they are the ones who refused to keep him. I only signed it because i felt they were gonna try to force me to surrender him if i didnt. Now they did let me borrow a carrier (which i have to return)to get him home but they refused him care overall. I was deeply offended and i sincerely hope nothing like this ever happens again because Blue Pearl Animal Hospital let me down.

I got in right away and received great care from Dr. Schipull and your staff. Your clinic has the best C19 mitigation measures my mom has seen anywhere, and the staff was so courteous and responsive that I didnt even need to scratch anyone in the face. Dr. Schipull had the rare combination of good horse sense and clinical expertise and explained everything well, so I didnt have to growl at her or run off. Most of all I am feline better--my eye is less red and swollen. And Im not kitten. Thanks for making me feel better! Signed, Hamilton

In these COVID times - know the practices of a business like this vet before taking your pet in. While most vets around the country have a protocol for euthanization of a pet where the owner(s) can be present - this practice does not. My experience was one where the vet told me one protocol but the staff followed a different protocol. It was confusion added to the stress of the situation met with no empathy (nurse Ratchet is warmer to her patients) from the staff. The only item they were very clear about was they wanted my credit card right away. I would avoid this vet chain based on this experience.

Do not go here unless you’ve won the lottery or want to take out a second mortgage on your home. This place is more expensive than a real hospital. Our dog came in with anemia and they gave us a list of possibilities. They quoted between $2000 and $3500 for treatment. On the 3rd day they said our bill was already at $3300 without the transfusion they originally quoted. Their excuse for the discrepancy was that our dog was there longer than the initial 48 hours but the original vet said they expected him to be there at least 3 days so that is just another excuse. After looking at the bill they charged us for an after hours ultrasound which we know for a fact was not done until the next day. If they lied about that to inflate the bill what else did they lie about? It was their recommendation to keep him longer and all they did was the same things they had been doing along with the initial medication. In hindsight I can see this was nothing more than an attempt to inflate the bill.In the end we elected to take him home as they still did not have an answer for his anemia. They wanted to continue with him and run more tests and do a blood transfusion. This would have inflated our bill to about $5000 for 4 days!!This company takes advantage of people at a vulnerable time, they are predatory in their pricing practices and in all honesty should be shut down. I have nothing good to say about this company and would highly recommend going somewhere else that has good morals and ethics, this place doesn’t have either of those.

I go to pay and it is $645 not the $600 they originally said. He has a fever and is still in pain and discomfort and we are off to another vet. They were so welcoming and comforting before we even arrived (i live in south dakota and had to make a 10 hr drive there). They kept in touch very well and i couldnt have asked for more. Once we dropped her off for surgery they kept in touch with me almost every hour, and explained everything in detail to me so i knew exactly what was happening. Dr. Reimer performed her surgery and he did an amazing job. He was even there to say goodbye to us and Marley when we got to take her home! I was a little skeptical from some of the reviews i have read about the filthy kennel concerns, and i went to visit her and she was clean, and when we picked her up the next morning she was clean. The facility is very clean, and they are open 24/7 so you can really go visit your babies whenever you want. Love this place and everyone we met. Thank you!!!

I have had good experiences with IRVC, now BluePearl, with both of my cats. One cat has chronic respiratory illness and was referred to a specialist here by my regular vet. Our cat returned to us as comfortable as possible after an invasive procedure and recovered quickly, and the doctor thoroughly researched the biopsy findings with recent scholarship to try three different medications to resolve her problems. Our cats symptoms have now been under control for many years. Throughout the entire process, they were very upfront with costs and treatment expectations.Last week, our cat who had been struggling with an infection, had a significant decline. It was too late in the day to go to our regular vet. The staff here were attentive, kind, and helpful. We found out that our cat had fluid in her lungs and metastatic cancer. They talked us through xrays and blood work and never once pressured us to pay for these, letting us know what our options were and that it was our decision. Most importantly, we decided to put our sweet cat to sleep that night to end her suffering. Our doctor was compassionate and understanding. She helped give us peace of mind (as much as is possible in that circumstance) while making this difficult decision. We were given all the time and space we needed to make the decision. They truly seemed to care and empathize with us. Before, during, and after the euthanasia, they gave us all the time, space, and understanding we needed. They even offered to make a clay mold of her paw prints at no charge to us.In regard to some other reviews mentioning cost, it will always be cheaper to go to a regular clinic. This is an emergency and specialist clinic, so do expect to pay more. Also know that in my experience, BluePearl is no more expensive (and in my experience, less so) than the other major emergency clinic in town. I am very sorry for reviewers who have had bad, or even traumatic experiences here. However, I have had nothing but overwhelmingly positive experiences with BluePearl and would not hesitate to take a pet there again.

I am beyond impressed with this pet hospital. We had a very sick cat that had urethral obstruction so he needed immediate attention. We called and they told us to bring him in at our earliest convenience and that we didn’t need to make an appointment. We brought him in 15 minutes later and they took him to the back right away. I will say that they are more so on the expensive side however you do get what you pay for. They have a great waiting room with free refreshments (which since I was hysterical a free drink definitely hit the spot) and the staff was very friendly and professional. Our cat did have to stay over night for a couple of nights but they called us constantly to update us on his condition which I appreciated extremely. Our cat does have a primary vet so we will continue to bring him to that one however, our vet isn’t 24 hours like BluePearl is. If our main vet happens to not be open again we will definitely be bringing him back if needed! Will also be recommending!

Having a pet require emergency care and hospitalization is such an emotional ordeal; The receptionists were extremely polite, providing tissues and a private space to process all that was happening. I didnt feel like they had any judgement about any decisions we made. You can tell that everyone truly cares about the well being of the animals they work with. Emergency vets are expensive, so this review is only related to customer service, medical treatment and care provided. We had to take our beloved sweet pet to Blue Pearl on three occasions. In Dec. 2019, she was referred for emergent/surgical care from our normal vet. We consulted with Dr. Reimer. He did a great job of explaining the diagnosis and prognosis and weighing our treatment options with us. We made the choice that worked best for our family and he did an excellent job with the surgery. It gave us more time with our precious girl and we are forever grateful for that extra time. The second and third times were in May 2020 and June 2020 and related to an unrelated diagnosis and prognosis than that of December 2019. In May 2020, we spoke with Dr. Slight regarding a new diagnosis and prognosis. Similarly to Dr. Reimer, she answered our questions and delivered some truly tough news with compassion. When it came to say goodbye, in June 2020, we returned for our final visit to Blue Pearl. While that was the worst night I have experienced in so long (maybe ever) because goodbyes are hard, the staff during that shift was respectful and empathetic. The only reason that this is not a 5-star review is that during our May 2020 visit one of the front desk staff or whoever was tending the front desk was a little too terse and short, which I found to be jarring. She also told me and another gentlemen that we could both enter with our dogs at the same time, and then yelled at me for entering, creating confusion re their Covid-19 measures. I am aware that there is the possibility my sensitivities were probably running high due to my dog needing care, but maybe staff should be trained for such sensitivities as I assume I am not the first, nor will I be the last pet owner to feel this way. Were all just trying to make it through and care for our pets as best we can. I guess I am just glad that staff member was not working the day I had to say goodbye to my pet, or this review would have considerably less stars.

My roommates cat jumped out of a 2 story window last night at around 1:00am and we live 30 min away from Des Moines. When he fell he landed on a metal fence that he knocked over due to the impact being so hard of a hit. We didn’t know what to do so we called the nearest emergency animal hospital and asked them what we should do. Bluepearl ended up being the hospital that we called. They answered and provided us with great information and informed us that the cat needs to be seen immediately. We rushed over and the cat was barely hanging on in the 30 min car ride over. We arrived and handed the cat “safely” over into the nurses’ hands. We were asked to wait outside in our car due to COVID-19 so my roommates couldn’t see their baby, after watching him traumatically jump out of the window, and couldn’t know if he was okay. I understand this part because of policies due to covid but my purpose in telling you that is to give you background as to how much that cat meant to my roommates. We waited outside where my roommate proceeded to give the receptionist the necessary info for the cats prior history and such. The receptionist asked a bunch of questions that raised red flags about the cats well-being under Bluepearl’s care. Questions such as,”Was the cat a normal healthy cat?” Well yes, before he fell 2 STORIES out of a window he was a healthy cat. They quoted it around $700-$800 to fix the issue. While they waited for the card to accept, the nurses would not care for the cat with labored breathing until the transaction was approved. They said they had him hooked up on pain meds, fluids, and oxygen after this and then told us that they needed to x-ray him and that the process for that would take a couple hours. Being that is was now 2:00 am, we went back home to wait for the results on the x-ray since they said they had him stabilized. They told us that we had to put a $1500 deposit down for the initial quoted bill and extra for anything else they might need to do. They also told my roommate that whatever expenses they don’t use, will go right back on the card. Pretty much instantly when we all got home, they called and said he had bruising on his lungs. They told us it would be a couple hours and it was only 30 min to determine what was wrong. They said that the cat was doing well now(even up and walking around) and that he would be good to go home in 12-24 hrs. I went to bed reassured that he was okay and was going to make it! I woke up this morning to my roommates telling me that he died overnight. They said that the nurses called them and told them a couple hours after the call saying he was okay, and told them that they did another x-ray on the cat and said he had a very little bit of fluid in his lungs but it was nothing to worry about. The next call they received was a call from the frantic nurses asking if it was okay to perform CPR(although earlier when we were in the parking lot giving the information on the cat’s prior medical history, we already had given them the okay) and that his lungs had filled completely up with fluid and he was dying. My roommates told them well duh, so the nurses tried for 10 min to give him CPR ultimately calling it. They called my roommates and asked if they wanted to see their baby’s body. My roommates went and saw him and they said fluid was still coming out of his eyes and mouth and his fur was even wet. They said their goodbyes and went to go grab the invoice. My roommate says that they had 3-4 things on their bill that did not make any sense and that the bill equaled exactly $1500. Bluepearl had done blood tests and blood sugar counts that were unnecessary. Why would they check his blood pressure and do blood tests if we already told them that the cat was not diabetic in the earlier line of questioning from the receptionist? While my roommates were picking up the invoice they also told them that bluepearl could cremate the cat for $100 but to keep the ashes it would be $200. DON’T TAKE YOUR ANIMALS HERE. GREEDY PEOPLE DON’T CARE ABOUT ANIMALS.

My vet recommended Blue Pearl for my dog’s surgery. He had the equivalent of an ACL tear. My husband and I were given two options and explanations for both repairs. We chose TPLO surgery. Yes, the entire procedure was expensive. However, it was money well spent. My dog is healthy and not in pain. His incision/scar looks great. Covid procedures were followed for drop off/check in for surgery and the post op checks. My dog was very nervous each time. The staff were so sweet and caring every time (a total of 3 visits). Dr. Spah’s explanations for each visit were thorough and easy to understand. He answered all our questions. Following surgery and after I talked to Dr. Spah, I was concerned about swelling. The technician that answered the phone was calm and knowledgeable. She explained what I should notice if there was a problem and answered my questions. I am writing this review after my dog’s 8 week visit. He still has some rehab to do before he’s back to pre injury activity but my husband and I were told what to do and expect in the next month. I hope my dog doesn’t need to have any other surgery but if he does I would choose Blue Pearl again.

So I know they didnt miss something. Im very grateful they fixed my puppy. Its been 5 years since her last surgery and shes still well. Those spinal surgeries cost $3500 and $3100 each with all scans and care. I thought that was reasonable. I took one star off because they did a poor job of keeping her clean. She stunk so bad like old urine and poo. We were shocked. Our little girl just had spinal surgery and they let her sit in her filth. We are lucky she did not get an infection. Both surgeries, the kennel hygiene was like that.Side note, I read a review that the clinic is now under ownership and prices went up considerably. The staff at Blue Pearl (IVR) have saved my pet’s lives! I’ve been going here for roughly 6 years and always had a great experience. My first visit way back when was due to my 1yr lab stepping on something outdoors that nearly sliced one of the pads on her paw clean off and she needed some serious stitches. Later, there was an issue with brownies and two of our dogs, years later after one of the dogs moved away, we got another baby lab and he was hurt as a pup (labs seem very clumsy). Then, throughout the years random things happened: bee stings with allergic reactions, we added some cats and one was hurt by another animal when we took him (he was attacked and bigger through his face, ripping his lip, fracturing his jaw, and puncturing the sinus cavity and fracturing the roof of his mouth, as well as a fractured rib and bruised lung), then there was the most recent issue of a UTI and our kitty becoming blocked. My mom had also been to multiple vets over a couple years to get help with her pup who had quite a few issues, which none of the vets could figure out. She finally went to Blue Pearl and got the answers she was looking for and was able to get her pup some help.Things WILL happen to your pets and chances are some of those things may not be able to wait, or will occur on an evening or weekend when your regular vet isn’t available. The staff here is well trained and very knowledgeable, I’ve always felt like they knew what they were doing and that my pets were getting the best care they could possibly get. Everyone has always been very friend, informational, and up front with their care assessments and pricing. YES, it may be expensive, but it’s no different than if you were to go to the ER without insurance... sometimes I think people forget that.If you’ve read a lot of bad reviews of Blue Pearl, I urge you to remember that we all have different experiences and perceptions and both of those things shape what we tell the rest of the world. What is true for one of us may not be true for another. It’s also tricky, as our pets can’t communicate what is going on and are so dear to our heart — we can easily become stressed out, sad, angry, and feel helpless when our pets aren’t well. Blue Pearl (IVR) has always been there for our family throughout these tough times and I recommend them to everyone I know who has a pet in need.

Our regular vet was closed and we brought our longtime family pet Moose in during an emergency. The vet came out to meet us outside as we pulled in and swooped her out of the car to rush her inside. Moose had an untreatable tumor but they gave excellent and immediate care. They were empathetic and understanding which helped very much even though it was a difficult day for the family.

I just want to give a huge thank you and shout out to all of the staff at BluePearl, especially to veterinarian Julie Burroughs. I brought my cat, Shadow, here one night in an emergency after he began having severe balancing issues. Long story short, I decided - with help from the expert advice of Julie - that euthanasia was the best possible route given his age and health history. The whole process was very quick and painless for my life-long furry friend, and Julie and her staff were empathetic, on an almost personal level, toward me and Shadow. After deciding to cremate and have his ashes returned (the whole process cost a little over $300, which is reasonable to me) I received Shadows remains back in a beautiful little, wooden urn/box along with a clay paw-print that I get to remember him by for the rest of my life.Thank you Julie and staff, for making this incredibly scary and difficult process as easy as possible, and for your unwavering empathy and support. A million thank yous.

Drove here from Northern Wisconsin for an unusual surgery which had been done here before. Well worth the trip. These people are wonderful and patient with incredible skills. I would return again if necessary in order to get such superior care.

They cared for Mario for years as we tried to keep weight on him. In the end, they helped him cross the bridge. They are all very caring. We are lucky to have them in Des Moines. ❤

These people lack compassion and patience. If you are going to have a snotty attitude when answering phones, choose a new career path.
