Not professional at all! Showed him a cut and then he cut my hair like i was having a ball in my head.Was so hurry to finish the cut to start with someone else. I told him maybe next time you can fix it. He told me « No, there will not be a next time ». Also, tipped him even if it’s the worst cut i’ve ever had in my life, didn’t even say thank you. Never again. Don’t come here!

I was told he wouldn’t do a medium fade. Needed a haircut for military training. He told me it would take to long. Not sure how a 0 clipper on the sides and back with a 6 clipper on top take to long for a Barbor to do... I was the only one waiting and was told he wouldn’t cut my hair. This is why I usually go to Des Mount near camp dodge for a haircut

Whatever I heard about this Saloon shop was absolutely true.First thing, no welcome talk.Secondly, he is 15 minutes Barber. He does not go more than that.Thirdly, he cuts few type of styles.Fourthly, he will suggest you to visit other shop if you have a long haircut.

I will never support him or his business and recommend that you do not either.I was in his shop this week after not getting my hair cut there for a year or so and he proceeded to lecture me about how he does not value customers that are not loyal to him, and how cutting their hair is not worth his time. He was talking disrespectfully about 2 guys that came in once for a hair cut and never came back... these were my roommates who I referred to his shop. He put me in a very uncomfortable position where I felt degraded that my business was not valued. After the cut, I payed him for his service, at which point he began to argue with me once again which was very immature. As a 21 year old college student, I felt as though I conducted myself much more mature than this business professional.Troy is not a man of any character. He does not respect you, your time, or those in his shop. He is a man of low integrity and values.Troy gives great hair cuts, but if you are looking for the small town barber shop camaraderie where you feel valued, you wont find it at Troys.

Amazing quick cut

Wish I could give this horrible man zero stars. The first and only time I went to Troy to cut my hair, he first told me he doesnt cut hair like mine. At the time, I was confused what he meant, but I now realize that Troy only has the basic skills such as performing a buzz cut and therefore says he doesnt cut any hair that is remotely longer than that. He went on to cut my hair that day, but complained about it the entire time. I also believe that he gave me a bad haircut on purpose, but I now realize after seeing some other reviews that he straight up does not have the skills required to perform a haircut that is not a buzz cut. How embarrassing for him. He is a man of very low business ethics. He has no respect for anybody that doesnt have buzz-cut hair. He is extremely judgmental and rude to all customers that arent his prized regulars. You could not pay me to get a haircut from this man again. Avoid if possible.

I LOVE going to Troys for a haircut! He is always friendly and full of interesting stories and anecdotes. His haircuts have always been great. I have never walked away unhappy with one of his haircuts.Troy always asks about the style of cut that I want before he starts, and Troy always pays special attention to the details. No other stylist or barber ever has shown the attention to detail that he displays. If I ever want something changed, he will take the time to fix it until Im satisfied. The quality of service that you receive is easily worth the $15.

When you walk in, Troy welcomes you. There are leather chairs, magazines, and tv playing to make your wait comfortable. There can sometimes be a wait, but thats a testament to Troys quality cuts and the recurring customers he has earned over the years. The actual haircut is prompt and professionally done; years of experience have made Troy an expert in his field. The best part is when you come back for another haircut. Troy remembers what kind of haircut you got last time and he can give you the haircut you had, or you can always change it up and Troy will pull it off expertly.

WORST EVERIve visited his shop several times before and he did a decent job. But Im not one of those loyal regular customers which he expects everyone to be. I dont go to him every time, although I live across his shop. His timing doesnt suit me and the shop is closed often. When I went there last time, he gave me a long stare and rudely asked me if my regular barber was not around. I never had a regular barber in my life. Later said he would do the job and then did an UGLY hair cut on purpose. You cant even see it coming, since you are not facing the mirror. I would have been happy if he had just refused the hair cut. Ive been going to Troys for two years now. He has been very friendly and easy to work with. He is great at helping to figure out your hairstyle by remembering what cut you received your previous visit. Ive had nothing but great service and to this day continue to recommend friends and family. For any army services or public service employees, i recommend Troys for the consistency and quality of those particular cuts.

Only thing I can say is fantastic service!That is if you enjoy being belittled by a teenage girl in the body of a man wearing a polo that is two sizes too small. If you can actually find a time his shop is open, youll find that Troy has an awful personality and has no problem whatsoever talking badly about his previous customers, or even you, right to your face. Troy will make you feel uncomfortable from the moment you walk in to the moment you get home to actually look at yourself in the mirror.Which brings me to the point: Troy sucks at cutting hair. Which is, you know, his job. When Troy isnt busy losing customers, he spends his time botching the hair of the people whose hair he actually decides to cut. It is not uncommon for Troy to turn people down because he simply doesnt feel like cutting your type. Translation: his very limited skillset isnt capable of cutting anything other than a buzzcut.Would give zero stars if possible. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this barber. Youll thank me later.

Don’t go here the owner is an as*hole and very mediocre at cutting hair. He is able to do only very selective haircuts on short hair. He can quickly and effectively preform a simple fade but besides that is limited with his skills. If your hair is even remotely longer on the top of your head stear clear of this place he has no idea how to use scissors and will mess it up. Also if you don’t routinely come here to cut your hair he will tell you rudely to go someplace else because he only cares about “regular customers”.

I took my 3 year old son in to Troys for a haircut. I was a little nervous as my son has some sensory sensitivities and hasnt done well in other attempts to get his haircut. Troy did a phenomenal job engaging with my son. My son loved watching all of the ISU traffic as Troy cut his hair and sat perfectly still. It was a success and Troy was great with my son

My haircut was efficient and very well priced. The shop takes walk-ins only, so try to come at a time when it shouldnt be too busy (9:30 AM on a Wednesday, for example). Even if there are a few people waiting, everything seems to move pretty quickly. Ill certainly be coming back throughout my time at ISU!

Been going to Troys for the last three years of my college career. He has a great location and his prices are fair. He never fails to make great conversation and is always very snappy with his cuts.

Ive been in Ames for two years now, and I had never been to Troys Barber Shop. I always went to a value chain that attempts to crank through as many heads as fast as possible. I needed a good haircut because I am going to be in a wedding in a few days. For starters he began asking what I want in my haircut. After I gave him a rough idea, I asked him to just make it look good. Long story short great haircut, great guy, but if you have more hair, or need more than 30 min you need to call ahead and set a time for that on Saturday after 1:00.

You get what you pay for at Troy’s, a cheap haircut and a cheap personality. Was explicitly told that he does not perform haircuts that take longer than 15 minutes even though I asked for a quick high skin fade. Ended up with a nonexistent fade with noticeable different lengths. I paid extra for a beard trim but let me tell you folks, if someone tries to freehand trim a beard with clippers, stop them immediately. I’m not even sure if Troy knows how to work a pair of scissors and comb. Stay away from this “barber” and go get a real appointment somewhere else.

Great place to get a haircut! Troy is personable and has always done a great job from my experience. His price is very low for the quality cut he gives. I noticeably get more compliments on my hair after going to Troys than compared to other similar establishments. His shop is also convieniently located for students, making it easy to stop in after or between classes.

He does a good job with cuts, the couple times I went there I was never disappointed in my cut. The reason for this slightly lower rating is because of his attitude. Both times I walked in his shop the first thing he asked me was where do you usually go? Or often inquires if youre a returning customer or not. If you say no it can be an awkward conversation when cutting. Nice guy if you get to know him but it generates an uncomfortable atmosphere and I dont see how that kind of behavior is good for a business. Cheapest barber Ive found in Ames though so if youre looking for cheap, simple, quick, hes great.

Ive been going to Troys for around 4 years now. Theres many reasons I keep going back. He cares about his regulars, hes never given me a bad haircut and its a comfortable place to wait if there is a line.Multiple times on a Saturday Ive squeezed in before closing and hes stayed up to an hour later for my haircut. Hes easy to talk to and will help you figure out if he can give you the kind of cut youre looking for. If not, Ive seen him give recommendations as to where else you might go.Ive got a lot of respect for Troy and highly recommend getting a haircut from him.

I wish I could give 0 stars. Troy will give you a good hair cut, but he is a man of very little character. Sitting in his chair and being lectured about not being a repeat customer was almost painful. It felt as though I was sitting at a lunch table with a junior high girl the way that he talks about his other customers behind their backs. I would not suggest supporting Troy if you want to give your money to someone who appreciates it. I would have preferred one of my friends giving me a terrible haircut, and being mocked in public for a month as opposed to enduring sitting in his chair. I wish that the people who gave him a good review could hear what he says behind their backs.

Troy walked me through exactly what he was going to be doing before we started and helped me understand what my hair can or can not do. My 8 year old nephew and I went to this barbershop to get a flattop for summer, and Troy the barber said, I can do flattops, but I dont want to. He said this after asking my wife if we were from Ames. We answered no. He recommended going elsewhere. We went to Toms Barbershop on the 400 block of Main Street, and barber Rick Butler not only gave us great flattop haircuts, he was polite and friendly to me and my 8 year old nephew. I would not recommend Troys Barber Shop.

This was my first time there and I had little to no experience working with longer hair. He really took it upon himself to figure out what I wanted to do with it and how to handle it from then on. Im sad Ill be leaving after graduation, but if yourre here for a while Id definitely visit.

He seemed like a decent guy but when I went in to get a haircut and told him how I liked it he basically told me that he doesnt cut my kind of hair. I have longer, thicker hair and didnt want a buzz cut which I guess is all he does. I was greatly confused and let down. I didnt know that barbers wouldnt cut different kind of hair. I have seen this place many times before and wanted to try it out. Decieded I would give this place a shot, today I walked in to get a trim (my hair is about 4 inches long all around). The friendly barber was with a client and greeted me as I entered. The barber Looked at me with a worried look on his face, asked what I was looking for and I respond telling him I wanted to trim it about half way down. He told me I have to make an appointment and I can only make appointments on Saturdays.All and all the Barber was very friendly but, I came to get my haircut and giving me one day with limited hours does not help me very much

Terrible business man. He randomly closes shop for a couple days to a week without warning. He talks bad about other customers the second they walk out the door. He even talked bad about my friend who goes there to me!! His techniques are mediocre and nonsensical. Like I wont go off haircuts in photos. Every time I tell him my haircut he tries to tell me I want something else. Nope. I know what I want. Overall just a rude person and terrible barber.

I recently graduated from ISU and for the 4 years I was in Ames Troys Barber Shop was the only place I went. Walk-in appointments are great for a college kid on the run and the pricing was very reasonable as well. Troy really takes the time to ask questions and make sure he gets your cut right (especially your 1st time in). If I could give more than 5 stars I would because he is that good. Great old school barbershop atmosphere and I plan to get a cut every time I get back to Ames. No one is better in Ames!

I had been wanting to visit the shop for years. Its kind of an ideal corner barbershop. Right off campus, it seemed to be a convenient spot for a trim up and I always saw a good stream of people coming through. Id heard from a few people it was a decent place to go.It was one of more interesting experiences Ive ever had in terms of a haircut. I got his entire business schpeal. He pretty much told me that he expected customers to come back every two weeks as it was better for business and kind of neglects people who dont follow that. He also said he stiffs people with beards. An extra 10 bucks isnt too bad, but I dont know why in the hell you would tell anyone that.He does one cut really well. I see everyone coming out of his shop with about the same thing. Over time he said he develops a relationship and gets it trimmed up how people like it. I didnt get to experience this because I went one time.On top of this, due to it being close to campus, I saw a couple friends of mine walking home after classes one of which used to be a regular client. After I said hi to him he asked if I knew him, I said yes, then he told me he couldnt stand him because he had gotten his hair cut other places and let his girlfriend take a wack at it. Again, things you dont say to a customer.I believe in customer loyalty and all that jazz but its something the shop has to buy with their service. Troys didnt do that. I got one good cut but I came out of the shop feeling sleezy. I paid someone that said he would shaft me on a cost, that couldnt stand a friend that many consider a saint and expected me to come in at regular intervals for the sake of his business model. For a clean cut, I got a dirty deal.

Troy truley is a 5 star barber. Ive been going to Troys for almost two years now and I can tell you honestly that he is the ONLY place I recommend others to get their haircut assuming you want a typical mens haircut. My freshman year I tried out a couple of the other places around campus and yeah Leedz will wash your hair, give you a head message and put a bunch of product in your hair for you but they need you to make an appointment and pay $6 more! Troy consistently provides a high quality cut, a nice atmosphere, straightforward customer service and the best price for a cut in Ames. My first time there I had no cash on me and he let me keep my place in line get my cut and come back later with the cash and since that day I havent gone anywhere else for a hair cut in Ames. There simply is no better place for a good conversation and a fresh hair cut in Ames than Troys Barber shop!
