I was really disappointed with my experience at Soleil... I really wanted to love it because its so close to home and the prices were so reasonable compared to other places in the area. I got there early, expecting to wait and they were able to do my bikini wax quickly. The girl was very nice, it was my first time, and she was gentle. She did miss spots but Im not that upset about it... There were lots of little inconveniences that started to add up. The waxing room had a robe hanging on the wall with a nasty yellow stain on it ... And it just didnt feel very clean. The people were nice, but Im mostly upset about the hairdressers. My hair is short. Its practically a pixie cut and I provided a picture, one with just a few highlights on already short hair and they wanted to charge $120 thats insane for just a few highlights on pixie length hair... My hair is literally shorter than my ears. Anyway, I got the gentleman hairdresser, from El Salvador, I thought that someone who was Latin might know Latin hair... I guess not. My hair is thick so sometimes hairdressers get a little crazy with thinning it out and then it gets too short. He seemed okay. He complimented my texture. I showed him the picture but in hindsight he didnt seem to be paying attention to what I wanted. He went straight to cutting. He also talked way too much about politics and it was uncomfortable. Thats when I realized he was absolutely rushing... I asked multiple times that I wanted it rounded in the back, feminine. Not a masculine cut. The picture was exactly what I wanted. I left the chair feeling eh. I didnt like the cream he put in, it felt sticky and I came home immediately and did my own hair. Ive only been to 1 salon in my whole life where I left and didnt have the urge to do my hair when I got home. This was not that time. The thing that bothered me the most was when I got out of the seat, he said, if you dont like it, itll grow out... like what? Did you just say that..? And then he told the receptionist $90, when on the website short hair is $50... Im so disappointed I never want to go back. I felt completely disrespected and as a new customer, I think its really important to make sure Im super happy, or Im just not going to come back... Not for how much they charge... I wish I didnt tip him as much.Below I have my before (by the water), what I asked for (girls with earrings) and what I got (very square masculine back)... :(

Today my friend, after booking an appointment, was turned down because of her NATURAL BLACK hair. She was told her hair was “too ethnic” and that they didn’t do “her type” or hair and kicked out. Imagine going to beauty school and not taking the initiative to learn how to work with ALL types of hair types. A shame. Even if you were never formally taught, it is your job as a hair stylist to be knowledgeable about hair. Not white hair. Not fine hair. Not thin hair. Hair. Period.

Imagine walking into a hair salon that cannot do hair, you would be frustrated right? Well that is what happened to a dear friend of mine today. Rather than privately discuss that they are not talented enough to do hair of different varieties or actually learn the craft that they went to school for, they decided to publicly discriminate against my friend because she had “ethnic” (their words) hair. Washington DC is a very diverse community that has lots of “ethnic” communities so hopefully if you are looking for a salon you go to those who actually know what they are doing instead. And those who welcome Black people onto their premises.

In this day and age, it’s very unsatisfactory to see a business that still discriminates. They refused to serve a beautiful young lady because she had “ethnic” hair. If you don’t know how to take care of all types of hair, how do you consider yourself a hair salon? I wouldn’t ever trust you to do anyone’s hair after that kind of a display.

This business is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous. They denied a Black woman service because her hair was “too ethnic”. I have never in my life been so disrespected learning about this, and this company should either learn how to do Black hair or just be bold enough to put a “whites only” sign up on their door. If you are Black, save your time and money and don’t go to this salon!

A colleague went to this salon (after making an appointment, might I add) but was told in front of the entire salon that the salon did not “do ethnic hair,” meaning black hair. She was humiliated. How can you possibly call yourself a respectable salon if you are unable to cater to clients of varying hair types?? Furthermore, how can you have a client go through the trouble of coming to your salon only to turn her away without even apologizing or offering an alternative service? Disgraceful.

Upon entry for her appointment, my friend was turned away by the staff because they don’t do “ethnic hair” or “her type of hair.” she was told this in front of the WHOLE salon, embarrassing her and drawing unwanted attention. this business turns away Black clients due to their OWN ignorance and treats them poorly. i would never recommend this place to anyone i know.

My friend was turned away because she has “ethnic hair.” If you cannot do hair of all races, you are not a professional salon. It’s disgusting that you would turn her away. Your business is giving Jim Crow Era policies. Despicable

This is the best salon I’ve ever been to. I am very particular about my hair, and Doan is as attentive to detail as they come. Once, she even told me she was going to cut on a 45 degree angle. We spend so much time discussing what we will do with my hair, even researching, and she approaches hair design as both an art and a science. Doan is incredibly hard working and will always try to fit you in, even if it means staying late. And she will sometimes throw in free treatments, extra foils, or products if she thinks it will help you. I’ve been going to her for ~7 years now and have referred countless friends who all sing her praises. It’s also a great value and much better price than most places in the city. Highly recommend.

I love going to Soleil 21. I only get my haircut here in the city. Doan does a wonderful job. I have long curly hair that needs a specific cut and attention to detail. They do a wonderful job and I leave happy every time. Even when I just need a blowout, they are happy to fit me in when they can. Been going here for a few year, and will continue!!

We take my kid to get his haircut here. The staff is very friendly and patient with a squirming kid. Soleil has two special cars for kid to sit in while they have their hair cut- this eases my kids anxiety. I cant say enough about the staffs professionalism. They strive to do a good job on my kids hair and to ensure that we are happy. They are unbelievably kind- I highly recommend them.

Absolutely terrible. I had a pedi, gf had a mani. Technicians had zero idea of how to do either. Girl cut my nails with a cuticle snipper and did not file them down. She started to put new polish over old polish. I stopped her and walked out once she slopped on the first layer of polish on to the first nail. Awful-its empty for a reason.
