Does the job. Pretty reasonable prices and courteous staff. Spacious with lots of equipment. Can get a bit busy in the late afternoon. Shower is not private. Other than that its a decent gym.
Great facility so far but the welcoming committee behind the front desk has been just a bundle of joy. My husband was scanning his QR code in as another patron walked in the door. Said patron rudely told my husband something to the extent of “pardon me I need to get through.” The front desk associate signaled my husband to move out of the way even though he was there first and was literally in the process of scanning his QR. I found the associate to be disrespectful and potentially undeserving of my membership fee if something like that happens again.
If you are thinking of joining a gym in the Bay Area, DO NOT join Fitness SF. They have instituted a policy forcing all new and current members to install an app in order to enter the gym. Go to your app store and review the permissions and reviews for the Fitness SF App. Take a look at the location permissions. Now ask yourself what purpose it might serve that every time you open the app Fitness SF, logs your location, likely stored in the cloud in an open S3 bucket, together with all your personally identifiable information. And if your wondering if thats likely, ask yourelf how likely it is that Fitness SF is hiring Infosec professionals to lock down that data, here in the Bay Area where billion dollar software companies are having a hard time competing for that talent. If you have any doubts about whether they have instituted this policy call them before you show up to sign up.Fitness SF will argue that you always have the option to go to the web site, log in and get a QR code, but lets face it, do you really want to log in to a web site and get a QR code every time you go to the gym, or do you want that experience to be as friction free as possible. If you are a member of this gym, check the permissions on the app. If you are disturbed by what you see, and at being strong armed into installing the app, and having your location shared, voice your opinion loudly. Write a review here and on Yelp, until you are given a choice. If you are in any doubt about the strong arm tactics being employed, try show up to the gym and say you want so sign in manually, and no longer use the app. See what happens.
Great overall gym and a very nice staff. I can easily recommend this joint!
It might not be the newest shiniest thing in the small chain of gyms, but the Castro location is solid, and whenever I do go instead of my normal midmarket or soma locations I’m actually quite impressed with the cleanliness and the range of modern equipment. The one area that needs improvement is the showers. Other than one showerhead that was recently replaced they basically put out air and it takes longer and more water to shower than if they were at normal pressure. Also the shower room does not seem to have any working ventilation anymore. That last aspect really needs attention or there will be mold and a whole range of problems. The shower room steams up with even just two people showering. Please fix and it will really enhance the gym experience. 😀
Recently changed the COVID guidelines and no longer need a reservation—still have to scan the barcode in their app which is easy enough. Also had validated parking lot which you might not expect or get with other gyms in that area.
Love the showers. Hope they’ll re-open the steam room soon.
Looks like they are expanding. Look forward to when it’s done!!
I’ve worked out here for several years. Good equipment diversity and lots of space in the changing rooms. Towel service was awesome upgrade a while back. Cons - front desk staff are often detached and disinterested in helping, and the gym can be insanely packed at peak times. Though I know some friends like it when it’s super busy ☺️
I have been going to this location for about 6 months and I am pretty happy with the gym. It has all the necessary equipment and is very clean. The staff are also nice.
Perhaps the best workout out there. I really like that the trainers walk around to show you good form. Without good form, then whats the point.
A great, full service gym. I had to quit for awhile for medical reasons, but Im back and looking forward to seeing you again. I appreciate your help and concern. Its a happy place.
Worst customer service. I tried to cancel my membership in November and they apparently dont teach their staff how to do it properly? I stopped getting charged so I assumed it had been cancelled but I suddenly got a 350 dollar charge months later in January from fitness sf. I contacted them by phone and they were extremely defensive and uninterested in helping. They then told me to complain by email. No one responded to my email for days and when they finally did, they didnt address the issue of a sudden charge of 350 dollars. All they said was that my membership had never been cancelled and that I can enjoy the gym until Feb 28. I replied again wanting to know why they stopped charging me if my membership was never cancelled and then they suddenly decided to charge in January. No response yet.
The staff here are great to assist in any shape or form. Signing up was no hassle and even a great discount to add. One thing I will say that gives this place 5 Stars is the cleanliness. I’m sure some will talk about the equipment. But does it do what it’s intended to do? Does for me. Thanks team!
Well maintained gym with modern equipment and a full schedule of included classes offered. After switching here from 24 Hour Fitness I find my desire to work out is much higher. This location is more basic in its offerings (no pool or steam room) because its in such a desirable location with less space. Fortunately other locations arent too far away on days you need those things.
Went there today to ask about membership fees. Front desk agent could barely be bothered. He quoted me $149 per month, $75 per week or $30 per visit. Didnt offer to show me the gym or ask if I had any other questions. Told me the prices and then went back to his computer. Didnt matter to me anyway as there are much cheaper gyms close by.
I have a high standard when it comes to gyms so when I first found Fitness SF I worked out in each facility near me before joining. The Castro location is closest to me and I am always pleasantly surprised by my experience there. I tend to go in the early afternoon to avoid any big crowds of people and love the variety of machines they have (especially upstairs). Only downside is that there are only a couple of squat racks and they arent of the highest quality.
Im usually such a good google !! But I cannot believe Ive been coming here for months now and never thought to check in or write a review...better late than never!I love this gym. With that said, I have always hated gyms, and I still hate to work out. Some things never change...what did change was my perception of gyms because of Chuze. It is always clean, doesnt smell stinky when you get there, even during the busiest hours. Staff is friendly, classes are fun. There are plenty of stations with spray and paper towels to wipe down your equipment once youre done. They have everything you need, definitely a no frills gym.Still prefer to work out outside (or not at all!), but this gym is great for those in between days.
Small place, generally clean. Usually crowded, some cross fit folks that use 4 different weight sets and flail around in the aisles as they run from machine to machine. Fun to watch from a distance, not so great if youre in the middle of the zone. Small locker room, small showers.
Great classes. The instructors are awesome. They keep mixing up the routine so it never gets old. Easy walkable access plus towel service and lockers.
Text/sit on machines is reduced since mid market opened, but still a problem. Management refuses to address issue with signage, new member orientation check list,, etc. Beautiful, warm, 2000s lighting, hopefully will not be replaced by cold, harsh, modern, millennial industrial/technology lighting upgrade. Decent gym overall. Nice views outside.
Decent gym. Absolutely braindead administraron.Re: Reply, Perhaps you’d be better off not ignoring my emails.
Great gym but the shower area could use a good cleaning, not as bad as most gyms but not as clean as they have been in the past.
Fitness SF in general is a way better option than 24 hour fitness. They keep their equipment clean and operational. This location never gets too crowded and its convenient to almost everything.
I have been going to this gym for many years and love it. My only wish is that the womens locker room was slightly larger, but tight quarters are worth it for a friendly atmosphere and great personal trainers.
Great staff bike ride on Saturday and Tuesdays with Debbie is awesome. Having a racquetball court is the best.
One of the better gyms Ive been a member of. Everything is always working, the place has lots of equipment which is always operating. Rarely encounter a broken down machine. Clientele is primarily gay and I often feel like the only straight man there but you gotta expect that in SF. Only real complaint is that the sauna is too small and I wish it was hotter. I prefer sitting in a hot room at about 120 degree as opposed to a warm room filled with piped in steam. Much better than the dungeon like 24 Hour Fitness a few blocks away.
By far my favorite of the Fitness SF gyms. The equipment at Mid-market might be better, and the Soma gym is better for bodybuilding, but you cant beat the friendliness and cordiality of the Castro gym. Day or night, its my hands-down preference, with friendly staff and customers, a clean locker room, good equipment selection, good airflow, and a great location close to coffee shops, restaurants, and tanning just a stones throw away.
Good gym, but the quality of your experience will vary significantly depending on what brunch you attend. I go to either Mid Market (which is definitely a 5 stars), Filmore, which is big and with a great pool, but a bit old and tired and Castro, which could definitely benefit from a facelift, but still OK for a workout.
The membership advisor didn’t really understand what I wanted or need from a gym. Trying to switch from Crunch to FitnessSF but need a better membership advisor to see the value.
I love this gym; they have every piece of equipment under the sun! Super friendly staff and good environment :) The only downside is how pricey a temporary pass is, 20 dollars for a day or 89 for a week seems crazy to me
Absolutely unhappy with the personal!I’ve got one months pass as a present from my friend and the guy who met me at the front desk wasted all my time that I had to check out the gym by talking about how cool their trainers are. Gave me three day pass instead of one month. I couldn’t make it to the gym for a few days and my pass wasn’t used even once! Thanks to the personal who absolutely refused to give me the one month pass! This time I asked for a three day pass to check out their cardio machine on Castro since it’s only 15 minutes walk from my home.It was over two weeks ago! Still no answer.Seriously? You do not need clients?
I talked with someone named Rusty on the phone about joining the gym. He was very friendly, explained the pricing and invited me in to come do a workout so I could see what the gym was like. I had already worked out that day, so I decided Id come in the next day.I went to the front desk and asked for Rusty. Unfortunately he wasnt there. I explained that I had talked with him about memberships and was there to try out the gym. They asked for my ID because apparently the offer is only good if you live in San Francisco. Rusty hadnt mentioned that, but I gave them my ID along with a paper change of address card from the DMV which is what they give you if you havent lost your license and dont want to pay the extra $35 or whatever to have it replaced. Its a legal document. Anyhow, Adam insisted that I was just trying to get in for free and needed better proof that I am actually a San Francisco resident. He asked if I had any mail with me (of course I didnt) or a San Francisco resident ID card (Ive lived here for 3 years and Ive never heard of that). I was shocked that they were so worried especially given that I had clearly talked with someone the day before about joining. I thought I was an invited guest. When I asked if that paper and my ID were really not good enough, a little old man at the front desk chimed in sorry honey, its a holiday weekend in a very snarky and condescending tone. The whole experience left me with a gross taste in my mouth and a feeling that they dont treat people very well there.Anyhow, I get a free $720 from work every year to join a gym. Needless to say it wont be going to Fitness SF.
Very busy, but lots of equipment so I wasnt waiting around. Everyone was very polite. Make sure to bring a padlock though for the locker!
Update 6/2019: SF Fitness canceled my beloved Tuesday evening yoga class for unclear, seemingly dubious reasons. Many members emailed and called the management to complain, but our complaints were not heard and we all got a cut & paste email response. Cancelled my membership due to poor management decisions. Also, the worst of all insults, they have horrible shower heads in the mens locker room. It takes like 5 minutes to wash the soap off your body. Take that SF Fitness! My recommendation -- try Barrys Bootcamp across the street.Original Review 2017: Love this place. What makes it so special is the community of people who go there and work behind the desk. I go here every Tuesday evening for Yoga because the teacher, Arthur, is amazing and better than any yoga teacher Ive ever learned from at Yoga Tree or any other fancy yoga center, and the people who attend his class are very dedicated and friendly. My only suggestion to Fitness SF Castro is that the showers are in sore need of renovation. The drains dont drain, and the sauna room from a bygone era of the Castro looks creepily abandoned.
This Castro gym is neglected at the expense of other locations. I guess the gays will be loyal no matter what. Its packed with people on their phones hogging equipment. Equipment that is broken takes longer to fix, and the hot water in the mens shower has been broken for weeks, but there is never a notice or an apology for inconvenience. No idea when it will be fixed. They raise the price 3x since I joined and I am thinking Ive had enough. (I wont get into the creepy people in the mens shower, a large communal room, but the management turn a blind eye to that).
I consider this gym an extension of home. Kind staff and cheery atmosphere make me look forward to the daily workout!
Just got off the phone with a really nice gentleman named Sam who works at the FITNESS SF gym in San tee. As of Sunday afternoon, Ill be a Chuze member.
This gym meets all my needs. Its disappointing that homophobic individuals would give a great facility that provides wonderful classes and even a juice bar at the Castro location one star because they have personal issues. Ive been a member of FSF for years and have only had positive interactions. Its also affordable and well kept.
The facility is pretty good, the people at the front desk treated me poorly and looked down at me. Kinda rude
Ive been a member for the better part of a year now, and typically go to the SOMA or Oakland locations because I like the classes there. Ive recently been checking out the Core Evolutions class on wednesdays at 6:30 here (Castro location) and really like it! Definitely difficult, but includes a good amount of stretching too so its not stressful. The gym itself - Ladies, if you dont want anyone to notice you when youre at the gym (and sometimes you dont), then come here. Youll drift through like a ghost.
Been working out here since it was a Golds Gym. I love how convenient, clean, the supportive staff and I’ve made many friends here over the years.
Definitely the straightest gym I’ve ever been to in the entire universe.
You have to bring you lock and restroom is not like others location. It’s old
Busy place, I’m impressed in how they keep this gym clean and outstanding.
A bit crowded, not the newest facilities, smallish womens locker room, but still very suitable. Ive been to a few yoga classes on the weekend, which have been great, especially given that classes are included in the (very reasonable) membership.
Great View working out looking on 2 Market Street. This gym has everything in the way of equipment.
Dont like the place used to be a member but I cancelled people are snooty and workers should mind their own business dont recommend
Great space, well-maintained, friendly crowd. Bathroom, shower and sink areas are adequate but only just.
I didnt feel like driving to my regular fitness SF off market so I thought I would go to the Castro location. I came at the wrong time as the place was packed and it just felt claustrophobic. I couldnt even find a locker to use so I ended up just turning around and going home. Too many people at the peak time and it just wasnt a comfortable environment. Not really the best review of the gym as I didnt even get to use it.
Great gym. Clean facilities. quality gear. Helpful staff. 80% dudes though.
They cram in a bit too much equipment, but its still a good gym. Free parking too.
My fave in the city. Not too busy and staff is super friendly. Currently being remodeled.
Its a bit stuffy, but once you get past that, its actually a nice gym. Great location, too.
Great equipment but tight on space. Very crowded at peak times.
Great gym! Theres all you need to stay healthy
Nice place, many and many equipment, it gets pretty crowded night time around 5pm-9 pm, I wish they open late.
Nice gym and equipment but like the Republican party 90 % white, old and cranky patrons.
Good neighborhood gym. Nothing fancy, but friendly and has everything you need.
Pretty nice gym for the price. look for a Groupon. has towels, and toiletries
This place is super clean, not too crowded. My gym!
Hot guys! Oh and a decent gym.
30 dollars for a casual visit! Tourists avoid this place
Great gym. Clean and the men are beautiful
Big gym. Smelly people. Not so nice to people coming in just for the snack bar. Ill avoid it.
There are Tai chi classes there that are out of this world.
Unsafe parking facilities. The gym is supposed to be equipped with patrols as well as working cameras, but a laptop was stolen from my car, along with three broken windows. Management was unable to assist me. Also the gym is very small compared to Fitness SF SOMA.
Handsome personal trainers . good equipment
Out of town visitor. Loved the gym and equipment.
They have all the equipment you would need. Tends to be very crowded during weekdays after 6pm
🌈🦄🏳️🌈
Great Gym! Unusably busy at peak hours, very friendly and not sexually aggressive!
Good equipment and lots of free weights.
Good, reasonably priced gym in a great location
I tried this gym. The staff is not that helpful. This is a very busy gym, and other members can be inconsiderate. The equipment is just ok. No thank you.
Great place, but SO crowded, even during the off hours
Crowded, awful music. Neighborhood gay gym, but man if it had even an ounce of competition it would be finished.
Average gym. TVs on elyptical machines dont work half the time. Take a long while to get things repaired. Only one location antiseptic wipes.
Can get very packed during peak hours. Parking is limited.
This is one of the smaller fitness SF locations and can get a bit cramped but still the same great amenities that the gym provides.
Friendly staff, great trainers, bathrooms are okay
My neighborhood gym, convenient.
Our favorite place to workout.
Really friendly staff, lots of weights, but can get overcrowded.
Clean and well maintained.
Love the Zumba classes
Convenient neighborhood gym.
Tons of equipment and free parking under the gym!
Essentially the gay center of the Castro.
Good gym
4 Squat Racks now
Clean and convenient.
Thanks
Excellent 😎👍🏻
