It is difficult to capture the length of this line in a photo. There were well over 100 people waiting to check-in at Thrifty at one point. After spending 45 minutes on this line, we were told we had another hour to wait for our car to be cleaned and ready. We reserved the car for 10:30 am, but didn’t have it until almost 12:30. No apology. No explanation. Apparently this is standard operational procedure at Thrifty. By comparison, no other car rental company had lines snaking through the terminal.

Look out for the fast-talking desk agents who slip in add-ons. You have to stop them and remove anything you dont want such as the prepaid full tank of gas and coverage if you have your own insurance. Also, if traveling with a baby or toddler who needs a car seat, bring your own. The car seats you rent here are cheap, not up to code, and largely unsafe. Luckily we were not involved in an accident because I have full confidence the car seat would have done more harm than good for the safety of our child.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! I prepaid for a car in full. When I arrived at the Phoenix airport, there was one representative at the counter at 8:30 on a Tuesday morning. It took me nearly 45 minutes to get through the line to him. I realized I forgot the card I prepaid with so when he requested a card, I gave him a different one thinking it was for a deposit for damages that would be voided when I returned the car. The representative asked me if I wanted additional insurance coverage and other services, I explicitly declined ALL additional services, and he acknowledged that. When I signed on the pad, I believed that I was signing for the damage hold deposit and that I was taking the car because there is nothing on the pad that lists out what it is - just a bar to sign.Upon returning the car, I found my card to be charged a second time, for the full amount of the first charge. I called Thrifty billing thinking it was a duplicate charge and was told it was for additional insurance. The billing rep was incredibly rude, going so far as to say they should have charged me for five days but because I returned the car a few hours early, they were only charging me for four. I told him I explicitly declined all additional services and he said theres nothing we can do, you need to call the Phoenix airport. Of course there is no phone number to reach the Phoenix airport Thrifty directly, which I discovered after I hung up with the billing rep. I called customer service back and was given the number to the Hertz counter and was told to call them and ask them to transfer me to the Thrifty counter. The number I was given was only to call Hertz customer service, not the Hertz counter at the airport. There is not a single number on the entire Phoenix airport rental car website to reach any of the counters directly and Thrifty billing has refused to refund the charge so my only option was to dispute it with my credit card as fraudulent.DO NOT USE THRIFTY at the Phoenix airport!! Look at the past reviews - they have fraudulently charged dozens of people, all who prepaid and all who explicitly declined the additional services, and no one has had any luck getting in contact with someone about it. They are scamming thieves and their level of service is disgusting. I would give them 0 stars if I could.

No lines just contract fraud. Prepaid with Priceline & explicitly declined all coverage & markups with the attendant at the counter. I was only asked to sign the credit card deposit terminal on pickup without being given any new contract to review prior to signing aside from verbally declining coverage. By all appearances I was putting a credit card on file in the event of damages. On return I was charged double the rental price with all coverage markups included that I had declined. The customer service line apologized that I “misunderstood” & advised me to read the contract prior to signing - when I was never given a contract to review before signing or indicated there was one aside from my Priceline reservation & explicitly declining everything. I would have had to film the exchange because they rely on verbal responses that leave no paper trail of their actions.Be aware that the Phoenix counter is not available by phone the minute you leave. They actively reverse your contract choices at will to recover money lost on deals & don’t have to absorb the backlash. You won’t pay less here. Any other choice you make is worth it.Fortunately having a code & being respectful of people is a virtuous circle in life. Anything taken away always comes back & people who choose to participate in exploitative behaviors always seem to live in chaos. I immediately received a bonus to overwhelmingly counteract their shadiness, so they’re not going to even ruin my day & let’s hope they don’t ruin yours. Fool me once.

My partner and I rented a car today and it was, without exaggeration, the sleaziest car rental experience I’ve ever had. The woman behind the counter kept pushing the prepay gas option and additional insurance but wouldn’t tell us the cost even though we repeatedly asked. It was only after she gave us the receipt that we found out all the extra charges came out to over $300 (we had already prepaid for the rental online). She never asked if we were ok with the extra charges. This will be the last time I use Thrifty.

The employees at the desk are working hard and doing their job. But this is a highly inefficient operation. We waited in line an hour and twenty minutes to reach the desk clerk. He checked us in smoothly. But advised us it would be another 50-60 before our car would be ready. This is Labor Day weekend, one would think Thrifty would plan better. If an unexpected problem arose they should contact those with reservations advising them of a problem. They are also checking both Dollar and Trrifty customers but the sign says Thrifty. Very poor operation. Likely a sign of these inefficient times.

Zero stars is not an option. If it were I would have used it. This was the absolute worst car rental experience I have ever had. My reservation was made weeks in advance . I flew in to Phoenix early because I had things to get done. I got to the rental car pick up and there were literally over 150 yes I said 150 people in line for Thrify/Dollar. It took 3 hours of STANDING in line, once you got to the front, gave your name, ANOTHER hour of waiting for them to call your name. A total of 4 hours to get to the garage, get in the car that already had keys in it. This was unacceptable. Kudos to all those that had to wait in that mess with small children! I will NEVER rent from them again.

STAY AWAY, PAY THE EXTRA COST ELSWHERE.I reserved for 7am pick up and prepaid online. I was the 1st in line at 7am. I was informed than even though I had a 7am reservation, my car wouldnt be ready for another 30 mins. Why? Union workers get to work at 6am to wash cars, my car, even though it was to be picked up at opening has not yet been cleaned. Can you ask for my reservation to be next to be cleaned or any other car available response: They are union workers and no one can tell them what to do except a union rep, and we are all sold out. This is why unions are not popular, mediocre work protected by laws. Now my family has to wait what we hope to be only 30 mins while we get a car wash...when we just want to grab a bite to eat and start our vacation.Edit: After almost an hour, the guy gave me my keys and said, hey 45 mins, not bad, even though he promised only a 30 minute wait. They also eneded up giving me the wrong vehicle and left it to the garage attendants to fix the issue, gave us a 5 seater when the reservation clearly said 7 seater, and the car was not very clean, smudged windows and windshield, gross smell inside. So much for waiting for the car the be washed. Waited another 30 minutes for that issue to be resolved.

When I mentioned this to the attendant upon drop off as I brought it back with 1/2 tank, she said, “they’ll be able to see that when they check it in, don’t worry!” And 3 days later, I was charge $83 for gas. $83 for 1/2 tank of gas??? Hertz who owns dollar/thrifty would not help us even though we’re gold members Bc they can’t “unlock” the reservation from Priceline. How are companies like this even still in business? Every single other car rental place here has a line of 0-5 people. Here it’s been easily 150. Do not come here!

I would NEVER rent from this place again. Our reservations were for 530pm, we were trying to leave on a road trip. I literally spent over 2.5 hours in line to talk to 1 of 2 people working there, just to be told I had to wait another 45 mins for my car to be ready. Finally, close to 10pm I finally left with the car. The car was another story, we paid for a full sized SUV and got a little RAV4 sport, not a good car for 2 adults and 2 growing boys. The tires on the car were bald, the entire trip I was praying we didnt lose a tire. The customer service was beyond horrible, the staff was so rude. This place could use some more employees that are happy they have a job.

When we arrived, the line for Thrifty was almost out the door! We canceled and went with another company. That company told us that sometimes the Thrifty line is a 6 hour wait! Police have been called due to frustrated travelers! We paid more, of course, but who wants to spend their vacation in a line like that? 3 people working the desk and no kiosk! I picked up my car Sunday March 7th at 10am. I had prepaid a car with my Chase points and was very worried the day prior to picking it up based on all the bad reviews. I apparently came at the right time, because there was no line. The lady at the counter was extremely helpful. She explained the differences between each type of optional insurances and since I declined the fuel service, she told me to fill up within 10 miles of the airport. The transaction took less than 5 minutes. I went to the car in the parking lot, and when I turned it on it said change engine oil soon. I went to see the customer service rep in the parking lot, and they told me to simply choose another car in the gold section. When I returned the car a week later, I filled up at the nearest gas station. At the airport, I parked it where the attendant told me. 20 minutes later I received my final bill, which was exactly what I was quoted. No surprises. Note: when I went to catch the shuttle, there was a massive line at several counters including Thrifty. Guess I was lucky? I only gave 4 stars because on my last day, I got the change engine oil soon message. Guess theyre a bit lax on checking the oil...

Their booth is closed, and has a sign telling you to go to Hertz. When we went to go get the Thrifty car that had been booked and prepaid online, a higher price and more fees were added.Highly recommend using other rental companies other than Thrifty. It may appear to be a better value when booking online, but price gets changed when picking up the vehicle in person. And all the dealings will be with Hertz, not Thrifty.

**Deceptive Business Practices. Filed complaint with FTC** First, it is quite lousy to have to wait well more than an hour in line to get to an agent. Complicate this with many in line not wearing masks to mitigate COVID-19 when required to do so. Once I got to an agent, I agreed to insurance. The only reason I considered it was more than a year ago on another rental, I busted a taillight and that increased the rates on my personal insurance. Before walking away, the agent just wanted my card and did not provide a price on what the fee for insurance would be. There also were no prices posted at the facility on the cost of coverage. I balked at getting insurance before knowing the price so I asked the agent how much it would cost. The agent showed me the full page receipt showing around $747. I prepaid part of the rental and thought that was a fair price when including what I already paid. After I returned the rental, I got charged the $747 in addition to the nearly $300 I prepaid. Nowhere on the receipt does it show a credit for what I prepaid. I feel this is a very deceptive business practice not fully disclosing the total cost of services at the point of sale.

I typically am the person who provides a lot of grace. But our experience was horrible. Their lines are absolutely RIDICULOUS. We booked our car online and made a reservation only to come to get the car with easily a 3 hour wait. I went to the front of the line and asked if it was all the same line for reservations. They said yep. I asked people at the front of the line how long they had been there and they said about 3 hours so far. I have a 7 month old and we’ve been traveling since 6:30 am and it’s now 3pm. We waited about 30 mins and had to end up calling to cancel and get our money back since we already paid. We can’t sit here for hours upon hours waiting with our baby. When I got to the Thrifty counter.I asked to add my husband and they told me the additional fee amount per day which was fine. They asked about the basic insurance (which I assumed was what I signed up for under Priceline) and DID NOT say anything about it being an additional cost above what I pre-paid (again I pre-paid for me rental WITH insurance). They never told me what I was being charged when I was at the counter. I assumed it was the amount due on my reservation which was $150 and the additional fee to add my husband $135. After I left and got to my destination (2 hours away) I checked my email and it had a receipt for my rental and I was charged over $1100. Over $500 of that was additional insurance fees with $200 part of a refundable deposit. After spending hours on the phone I am told their is nothing they can do over the phone or social media. When I returned my car I saw that my credit card had been charged $628. Extremely disorganized and understaffed. I’m an airline pilot and had a full day layover at phx so I decided to rent a car the night I came in. The line took about 45 minutes to get through since there were only one person working the desk on a busy night. Then they sent us down to the parking garage to go find our own car. They give you the parking spot number but this is a huge and complicated parking garage. You’re running around this vast area with your bags after a long day trying to find the one spot out of hundreds. Car was good. Brought it back within 24 hours as planned and there’s no one working. It’s only 9pm and there’s not a single person that I could ask for help. So now I’m trying the read the thousands of different signs to figure out what to do and it said to just take a picture of the gas gauge and leave the keys inside the vehicle in line with all of the other returns. So that’s what I did. Then a week later they send me an updated receipt saying I owe an extra $700 dollars because the car was never returned. Obviously they have extreme problems where they misplace one of their vehicles for a week long. Then I call them and they obviously don’t believe me so I’m out of $700 dollars for 5-7 business days while they do an investigation. I told a supervisor my entire situation and asked for a discount off of the original price because of all the extra time I’m having to spend proving I’m not a liar and for all of the confusion doing their job, finding my car and returning it. I’ve rented many cars and have never had an experience as bad as this. Complete confusion and they’re trying to charge me $700 dollars for a one day economy car rental because they misplaced the car.

Thrifty cancelled our reservation and would not agree to the rate we had reserved originally, but quoted a rate of more than double the next morning. Flying into the Phoenix airport and trying to rent a car is painful. Especially if it’s through Thrifty Car Rental.

What a nightmare renting from Thrifty/Hertz. If I can give a negative review for pain and suffering, I would have.I flew in to PHX on my day off and needed the car for one day only.I returned the car the next day 12/7 at 8:22 am. I took a screenshot of the fuel levels and mileage, left the key in the car and the employee wish me a good day.Every day a $100 charge has been placed on my card, and I am bombarded with calls from Hertz ( I think they merged with Thrifty) to return the car or I will be charged for repossession and banned from the company.I’ve called multiple times and I am told it would close out I’m 24 hours.Rental record 650722936.

The rental agent was saying one thing and charging me a different amount. When I paid with my credit card and signed on the pen pad there was not an amount listed. He said that it was for the deposit only. He handed us the folded up paper with the car parking space listed on the outside and I never looked at the charges until I reached my one way destination in San Antonio. Everything was double what he was telling me. Criminal. I called, and they said “ well you signed for it.”Criminal

DO NOT RENT FROM THRIFTY!!! This is the WORLDS worst car rental company. The level of incompetence I observed from the customer service agents at the counter in PHX Sky Harbor Airport was nothing I had ever experienced with any other car rental company. Not only were they confused as to how to perform their job duties but I was charged twice for the same rental and have yet to receive my money back. I will NEVER rent from Thrifty again and will encourage others not to as well.

Absolutely the WORST car company I have ever dealt with. If I could give 0 starts, I would. I was quoted a rate of $20.44 a day for a rental car for a 3 day period and somehow walked out with a bill of $281.84. The representative LIED to me and said I had to get insurance so we opted for the basic coverage whopping ( $119.97) and only when we were walking out did another representative clarify it was not required. I immediately called customer service and spoke to Jake Cyrus employee ID 2061 and he said he was making notes in the system and when we dropped the car off the charge would be taken off. This was another LIE. We dropped the car off 3 days later and the manager on duty, Davon said we had to wait for the car to process as dropped off in the system and to call back in 24 hours. Another LIE. I have called and spoken to several other CSR reps, was hung up on several times and said they could do nothing. Alexis employee ID 5130 and Krystal were no help at all and wouldnt escalate the call to speak with a manager and then hung up on me. Will never use again and will tell EVERYONE how horrible of a company Thrifty is.

Had done a rental through priceline for a midsize car and did payment online, when I got to the counter the agent was trying to give me a compact car I proceeded to tell her I did not rent a compact and she said she would change it. I signed the electronic pad not knowing she was charging me $104 for an upgrade to a mid-size car!! Contacted my credit card company and they said I had to contact Thrifty I did and they said because I signed the electronic pad that means I knew the price for the upgrade!! I asked what a mid size car is to them and they wanted me to call their reservation department to find out!!!After reading the rest of the comments I realized they have done same thing to other people so I did file a complaint with the BBB.

Agent put insurance and road side assistance on our 10 day rental we told him we were paying with amx that would cover us I trusted he would not put it on but he did tried to resolve it and the overseas customer care would not help at all. I have rented cars from Thrifty multiple times and they have been by far the best company. Other companies take so long to get you the vehicle, or give you a great price for great car. If you have any doubts they usually answer them clearly for you. Highly satisfied with everything. Employees are also kind!

DO NOT RENT FROM THRIFTY NOR DOLLAR, they are having a management and staffing crisis, DO NOT PREPAY ON ORBITZ OR EXPEDIA, you have been warned. I waited 1 1/2 hours in line, they have shuttered Dollar, all rentals are going through Thrifty. There are two extremely slow clerks, the line has about fifty customers before me. If you read this message listen to me Im here at the airport, Im stuck because I prepaid, rent with Enterprise or try Budget or Alamo, if its $40 more pay it, this is ridiculous, the Phoenix Airport should penalize them.

Insanely disorganized, one representative for the entire operation to pick up a reserved vehicle. The line was wrapped around the building and people waiting hours to pick up a car. Clearly this company does not value customers enough to hire enough workers to deal with this issue. We went with Sixt instead. Stay away thrifty at all costs. Theres a reason theyre cheaper.

I would suggest using any other company available then thrifty, it is a scam, and dangerous. The front desk manager told us one price (13.50 total), to add a driver, then charged us 25$ a day, as well as other undiscussed up charges. There is no way to call the location once you have left, you must call an outsourced customer service line with broken English, who will offer you a gift card worth a fraction of the overcharges. It is clear this is a business model, not an accident. Also while paying for a car seat to use, the representative brought us 3 different broken car seats and tried to convince us to use them. They stated they give them to everyone like this, they were all missing safety equipment. They are putting Children on the road in defective equipment. We finally found one we had to settle for. Do not use this company, it is an unsafe money grab.

When I initially arrived at the airport they had a sign saying go to Dollar Rental. I showed my reservation and id and they told me to go to Hertz Rental lot to pick up my rental. During the time of me having the car I had caught a flat tire and put the spare on because I couldnt get ahold of roadside assistance. I was assuming because it was the holiday weekend (Labor Day). When I turned in the vehicle I noticed they had billed me an additional $236 for a flat tire. When there wasnt anything wrong with the original tire I simply caught a flat. Then when I called customer service I waited over 25 minutes to finally get ahold of someone to give me an explanation on why Im paying $236 for a flat tire they hung up the phone in my face. Im sharing my experience because I dont appreciate companies trying to rip people out of their money that theyve worked hard for.

I returned my rented vehicle on time on Sept 8th, 2020 at 8:20 AM but since there was no attendant to check me out, I was asked to leave the keys in the car and head to the airport. I was assured that the receipt would be emailed to me later. The receipt arrived after a few hours but Thrifty had charged me for one additional day since the vehicle was checked out more than an hour after I actually returned it. Not very happy with the additional day charge for no fault of mine.

My wife and I had the unfortunate experience of booking with this company. We arrived with our reservation to be met with one of the longest lines Ive ever seen in my life and barely moving. They had shut their counter down and put up a sign stating for everyone to go next door to dollar. When asked if we needed to wait in this line even with our reservation we were told they didnt even have any cars and they were issuing out cars as they are returned. We were also told that we may not have a car for two or three days! My wife called Thrifty and politely ask about canceling our reservation and was told to just stay in line and be patient. Then they hung up on her. We are so mad at ourselves for not spending the extra money to do business with another company. Nightmare...

I had the opportunity to rent a vehicle from Thrifty during my stay in Arizona. I had my reservation set for 5pm and was not able to pick up the vehicle until 6:30pm. I was assisted by a Thrifty worker named Anne who made my experience with Thrifty a nightmare. She was not knowledgeable about the company policies or their partnership with triple A. I then had asked to speak to a manager so I could speak to someone who knew more about fees that Anne was attempting to charge me. She did not get me a manager instead she went to the back and then came back to repeat what she had already told me. It was not until I went over to Hertz which is not who Im renting from, to get some assistance. They were able to locate the manager of the car rental services who then told Anne that the fees are in fact supposed to be waived. Anne delayed my reservation and my trip because of her incompetence and lack of knowledge of her job.

Office seems permanently closed. Had to go to Hertz counter- wish they said that online during booking so I know where I am supposed to be going. Somehow charged $200 onto my credit card even though I had already paid using Credit Card for rental through Priceline.com. Can’t get hold of customer service to figure out what is going on. Why charge a “deposit” when my credit card gives full insurance ?? So far wasted about 3 hours (1 hour at check in trying to get the car and 2 hours trying to get hold of customer service after the fact). Won’t be using these guys anytime soon..

I upgraded to 3 stars from One since they gave me a refund of the gas charge that took an hour or more of my time to dispute. If you can wait for the guy that inspects your car, it would be a good idea. ***First one start rating post: Purchased thrifty rental car on Priceline good price. Flew into Phoenix on the 19th for a one day trip to see a rental property. Picked up the car, thrifity was closed, said go to Hertz. Line was a bit long waited 20 min. Car was fine etc. I only drove 35 Miles, I put about two gallons of gas in the car before my return. made the gas handle shut off 5-7 times at the gas station to make sure there was a full tank of fuel. Return the car, they bill me $21.17 for gas, tax and fees. They should be called Theifty. Emailed Hertz on the 20th. It is now the 24th no word back from them.
