For a Christian organization, the Star of Hope lacks many fundamental Christianic values. While they serve their purpose, they lack love, compassion, and empathy for those who are struggling financially, and I would bet spiritually, as well. I hope and pray that proceeds that go towards this organization are used to help and serve the needs of Gods people and not line the pockets of the higher ups. I would really like to see some major changes.
I called for shelter I have a job..just needed a place for 1 week till paycheck come.in and I could take care of myself. If you really want to help people help.people with a job and dont try to micromanage their lives and treat them.like children. Covid is done. Get over itStop making healthy people pretend they are sick. There is a disorder for that called Mauchausen byproxy.
Turn me away when I was at time homeless and unable to walk. I was in in a wheelchair. I slept by the tracks. And I was eating by ants
I relocated from Chicago,, ive only been here 2 weeks & ive already caught Walking Pneumonia.. They help yu get a Gold Card, provide 3 free meals & shelter if you join their program.. I wish this place on NO HUMAN BEING.. Youre devalued & worthless..
I was tired, hopeless, and hungry. At the end of my rope. The SOHMDC took me in and though very strict, got me back on my feet. You have to humble yourself to make it work. You will be tempted to leave but get into the SRP program and follow the rules. Obey God. Read your Bible and pay attention to the leaders. You will make it IF you want to.
Just like Harris county jail only thing is you can leave when u want
I can’t speak of this place now in the year 2017. But back in college I was a volunteer here and I loved it, the kids were all happy and the people were happy. It was in early to mid 90s. James Greene was an awesome man! And Robbie was a nice guy as well. They genuinely cared and loved the people.
They Dont even deserve one star. I called this company asking in need of a wheelchair for a homeless disabled person & said we cant help you. Told me to call the VA maybe they will help. I dont know if hes a veteran so what good will that do.
I stayed here for 8 months a year ago or so .. this wasn’t my first shelter but it was the best .. shelter definitely shouldn’t be comfortable living because then you’ll adapt and won’t wanna leave .. so yes there are things that aren’t right here but trust me the room they give you is much better then where I’ve been .. star of gave me the opportunity to get in school and because of them I am a licensed cosmetologist
God Bless
I was in the Star of hope and honestly it changed my way of thinking in a good way and I still use some things I learned there today..I have had some great experiences there, met some great people who to this day I consider my brothers, and I still to this day have great memories from when I was there.I can honestly say the program I was in changed my life and had a positive impact on my childrens life as well. There are good people who work there and some good teachers that can help a person if they are willing to be helped.Mr. Fussell Mr . BRIGHAM MR. Gray Mr. CLARK MR.DOUG MR.DARRELL AT THE WAREHOUSE MR.TURKNETT Hope I said it right lol the whole WAREHOUSE staff Cj the cook Mr.Readaux and and its another man who works for men at work (cant remember his name hes stiff but he means well he be preaching)are great people. What Im trying to say is that this place is a good place and I feel should be recommended to anyone who has no place to go and trying to get back on there feet if is last result..I have learned a lot there and if I had to would go back and I plan on Volunteering someday just give back .To the staff keep up the good work you do make a impact and I feel our heavenly father put the Star of hope there for a good purpose..They also have good people that comes and gives good messages and if I left anybody out I apologize.
This place makes you not only attend their on site church services everyday but also youre not allowed to leave the building for anything unless you get a pass a week in advance! Cant even go out and work. And thats for about 30 days or so that you cant leave. Depending on the program you enter. Shame. Im glad I was easily able to opt out and leave.
GOT a Not accepting anyone else and when I asked for any knowledge or where else to call he just said :NO I DONT sounded so cold and non caring.. don;t know where to look for a male seeking shelter
My family donates to Star of Hope. Ive read all the reviews here, and it seems likely that that those stating that you get what you make of of it are right. Lots of critics here who sound like they are biting the hand that feeds to to their own attitude problems. Im sending another contribution, because God helps those who learn to help themselves. Im not interested in enabling addiction or supporting the world owes me because I exist and want things my way attitudes. Have some humility, respect, work ethic, discipline, belief in prayer and love for God. Things dont usually change overnight, but you may be pleasantly surprised in the long with a much better life. Thats how it went for me.
I stayed there once years ago. I had a 102 fever with no electricity. It was 101 degrees outside and I had no where to go. I made the mistake of paying the wrong amount to my electric company I owed them $30 and they cut me off. I paid it that day, but it was going to take 3 days for them to turn it on. They took me in and I have never forgot it. They kind of quarantined me off, because swine flu was a big deal that year. I was so bad they didnt want me to get up for my food. They brought it to me. I will never forget this place. They are true life savers.
I am a guest preacher at STAR OF HOPE . This is the BEST MINISTRY I have ever seen. EVERYTHING IS FREE FOOD CLOTHING BEDS SHOWERS SOAP TOWELS BLANKETS 365 days a year, given by donating churches. There are long term stay for addicted, and free ministry school. The People who are posting ungrateful messages is the reason they are homeless. Honor God, Honor the hard working volunteers who get no paycheck and serve homeless needy people and pray with them to bring them to New Life in Jesus Christ. Look in the mirror shape up and stand strong serve Jesus, work hard . You were not born to be a homeless lost soul. May Lord Jesus save your soul!❤️PASTOR RUTH
If not for the Star of Hope I would still be dead in spirit, blind to the gospel, crippled, and uneducated. I crawled to the Star of Hope in Sept. 2010, a 9th grade drop-out, crippled hands, a non-believer, drunk and high on crack. Today, March 3, 2019. I am a leader in my church, my hands endured a series of surgeries, and I hold a Bachelors Degree in Corporate Communications. All of the above obtained while at the Star of Hope Mens Development Center. Do not listen to the negative talk. If you want it, God will provide however, you need to get out of your bunk and show up.Enough of me. During the many years I have been blessed at SOH, I have witnessed many men start a new life with God. Many men have been able to reconcile with their families, employers and life in general. There are others though, that simply need a new beginning. Yes, it is available through Christ at the Star of Hope. God bless
Answered the phone after five minutes and still didnt help me. Sent me to a voicemail... Suicide is sounding better than trying to get help from these people....
My observation is that the majority of people who complain about the structure of the shelter is do to their lack of respect for authority, policies and procedures. Not just at the Star of Hope but anywhere in life. If you redirect your focus from everything that is wrong and instead use the resources that are available to all residents who truly are seeking life change. Although it does take hard work and dedication, I can assure you that the results will be most beneficial to you in the long run. There are many success stories as a result of keeping a healthy attitude. We should all seek postive life change in our day to day if we sincerely wish to better ourselves. I am disheartened that many have missed the sole purpose of the Star of Hope as well as a chance for healing and salvation. We all have to follow rules in this life. Its important that we hold OURSELVES accountable! Without it we should expect failure and negative results. I pray Gods amazing grace for those that are lost.Hurray for the Star of Hope!!!What an awesome way to serve God...
Church part is great and food is OK The place is unsanitary the rescue emergency shelter staff have you sit in chairs for 3 hours at a time then church for an hour then you eat. Good luck trying to work a job and be in the emergency shelter part. It is geared for you to sign up for the programs they have.
Whats sad is u got all these people be donating money and food and all kinds of other stuff to these shelters and they aint giving none to the homeless people and they wonder why people come out here in they cars passing stuff out to the homeless to make sure the ones that are homeless get the things they need. I think its a good idea for people to come out here in they cars and pass out food and clothes.I would sleep outside or another shelter any where beside Star Hope.
I had a friend who stayed there last week of june. He told me hed rather be shot fighting on the frontlines as a soldier in the army. He complained that they gave him A HALF-piece of jail soap no bigger than a ritz cracker, they make you share a tube of toothpaste and deodorant stick, they have no washcloths and they gave him a half-torn towel to wash and shower with. No bedsheets and one blanket for the mattress. Breakfast was a spoon of oatmeal and a biscuit. Dinner was a tiny bowl of chicken soup and two slices of bread. They had no clothes to give him. Horrible, horrible, horrible place, possibly the worse in the country.
F youre new they wont tell you hardly anything. If you do something wrong they snap at you even though you are new & dont know what you are doing. They have chapel which is a joke cause they treat you like sh#*. And they know youll take it cause youre desperate for a place & know you will put up with it to have a bed & meals.
There program csp is a nightmare. I have HIV and everyone in the program was told my private medical information without my permission. I was sprayed in the face and neck with chemicals that burned when i slept, and made me sick. They have undercover agents attacking homeless i swear.
Its a Kool Spot 4 people in Need 2 Chill & get back on their feet...
It was the worst experience ever. The staff were very unorganized and I believe some of the people there were planning on trying to steal my things. My bag was misplaced and bed ticket taken and replaced. After asking for something to shave with and the shaver being given to another client I decided this is not where I wanna be. I wouldn’t give them a single star the place definitely makes one hope for better.
I was there In 2006, gave me time to get a job. Stayed while working. Left when money got better..Its what u make it.
I stayed here several months ago. I was in the programs they have. I agree something fishy is going on there experimenting on the homeless with chemicals. I would put my shoes and socks on and they would burn my feet and legs leaving sores that were numb. My clothes and pillow and sheets were always mysteriously moist and left sores.
To the men that run Star of Hope. Recently i went due to Hurricane Harvey. I felt this was a good several days to pray. There were few bibles and they cannot be removed from the chapel. I had the bible on my phone, it was taken and put in storage according to policy. After using the chapel to pray 2 days, I was locked out on day 3. It is impossible to pray in the dayroom everyone is made to sit in. Thank you for your help during the hurricane.
If you take a loved one there please supply them with shower flip flops and a suitcase is required. You cannot bring a bags...There are no close by stores.
If youre new they wont tell you hardly anything. If you do something wrong they snap at you even though you are new & dont know what you are doing. They have chapel which is a joke cause they treat you like sh#*. And they know youll take it cause youre desperate for a place & know you will put up with it to have a bed & meals.
OMG! Worst shelter you can ever imagine the staff members there do not care I repeat DO NOT CARE! You better off sleeping under the bridge I believe the pigeons will support you more then them.
Im a alumni and I have great things to say about Star of hopeMy only prayer is that the appointed people to help the staff remember that they were not always in the program
Say Man.. I appreciate the Thought, But them people that run that place are all Ex Cons and they run that place like Beto. I looked up and their was a Harris County Sheriff in the Pickett 😐 They have a Pickette!! Ya hear me?Say They make you sit around watch Rehabilitation Movies about Jail..Like Project Reo. The man came to get us to eat and said (and I repeat) Everyone g to the CHOW HALL 😶😶😶. Hummm dont you mean Cafeteria?..Im sorry but I dont want to pretend, act like or feel like Im in jail! You can have your phone but cant use it😶.However the food was good.
I have never stayed at the Star of Hope. I do consider myself a donator of funds to the Shelter. I have made a copy of the reviews and will be sending a copy of the 12 reviews to the Administration along with my next donation. I will be requesting an explanation as well as a tour of the facilities to see what I am donating too. Please keep the reviews coming as they are the only information that helps donators know what is happening at shelters like these.Augustine Rodriguez
This place is a scam. I agree there is likely a conspiracy going on here. I overheard people say this is where the agents meet their targets Ive heard chemical warfare practice and psy-ops go on here.
I had some interesting experiences here ultimately I was kicked out for selling candy in the building. Someone stole my phone but I was able to geo-locate it and set the alarm on it. That person didnt get in trouble but I got in trouble for destruction of property because I punched a locker. Permanently banned. Its a very clean facility the breakfast and lunch are bland they could do a lot lot better with the money they get. However I worked at the donation spot and none of the good stuff ever gets to the people who stay at Star of Hope. Its all grabbed up by the attendance there Ive seen it first-hand and then they sell it. Its true that in order to get a bed in the rescue section if you have to come for lunch that day which is around noon or so. Then you have to sit through an hour and a half for teaching. Its not really the worst thing its just that when you stay in this rescue section you cant possibly work a job because you always have to come in the middle of the day for an hour and a half. Then when you get to the downstairs program side youre stuck in there for about a damn month and cant leave I did anyways but not for any length of time. The upstairs program is like a 7-month dedicated thing and theres no way in hell Id do that. Theres some good stuff and some Wicked staff. One guy was really nice and he selected me to go on a special trip or we went to a camp and it was actually pretty nice. I worked out that staying in the program you actually witness about 40 hours of church service a week thats like a full-time job. They have entire Warehouse is filled with excess donation supplies that they never even give to anybody in the homeless shelter. They just save all the raggedy ass stuff for the programmers everything good goes to the people in power. Theres a system where you have to sign in and out thats pretty annoying being new to Houston it was a cool spot to live to kind of get the lay of the land for about four months until I was kicked out. Ultimately most of these places are a scam because once you get in there they get your Social Security number and all your information and they withdraw funds from your SSI account without really telling you that. Ive stayed in several homeless shelters like this
These people are telling the truth about how terrible it is. I really wonder how the people that donate to them feel thinking that they are helping the homeless but in reality are helping people who already have money pad their bank accounts. There is a gentleman working there by the name Mock who threatens the homeless there with violence as if he were a correction officer. They use drug addicted men to police other homeless men in there and make them feel like they are imprisoned. They claim they set rules so you can be ready to live in the real world In what real world are you not allowed to use your phone to check out jobs or apartments. This place is a joke and so are the people who run it. If you are a single homeless man you are better off hitch hiking a ride to NY. They will actually provide you with a place to stay and give you medical insurance and a couple of dollars and real resources to get you back to work!
2 stars...yes youcan have a roof over your head, and have a meal. BUT...they make you attend church service and what a service. You might not like the church service because of how its delivered, but its still a shelter, just not my type of church. I question how they treat homeless people. Very strange. I couldnt stand it and left after 3 days.
The only thing this place helps you with is from being off the streets for the present day & over night. THATS IT! This isnt going to help you if you are looking to get back on your feet. You will still be doing the same thing that got you into this situation. Its supposedly Christian based but they talk to you like you are scum lol.
Its a long story. They have great meals, but they have grueling system. You have to sit through hours of sermons to get a meal and even more to get to a bed. I was thrown out today because a man became angry at the place in line I took. I picked a spot and stood, it was getting ready to rain so they were giving everyone the same bed. He started yelling at me so I yelled back, and I was the one thrown out. I was told not to come back.Make this place your last resort. You dont want to be here. The man who began his rant looked like a drug addiction. I have a monthly income and no addictions. Even if I could go back, I wouldnt.I just needed a bed for a month after a series of unfortunate events. These people spat on me for it. They will not ever be endorsed by me.
If you want to get food poisoning then go here and if you want to dont want to find a job then go to this place they treat you like trash the have bed bugs not to mention they they have a curfew at 6 when I left oh and the staff still food from that place how can you call yourself a Christian when you still food from people? They say there a none profit organization is that why there funded by the state and they make 150 each every day for rescue and 500 each a day per programmer and there is about 200 programmers and 150 rescue.
I see a lot more of bad reviews than anything good about this place
It was ok didnt have a bed but fed me well.About 3 hours a church a day but thankfull for the accommodations I was stranded trying to get back to la.Russell m.
Here is the real: this place is VERY Christian. mens center, this is the day: You get rudely woken up at 5am. Morning church before you can eat breakfast. Employees, long term & program-ers get in line to eat first, then others/you. You cannot sleep thru church or stay on your bunk/mat. You are forced to the chapel. After breakfast, you go to a main chair area/day room. Shortly after bed tickets are handed out for a place to sleep that evening. You then walk out to the lobby and get your checkin bag, if you choose to. After this you walk outside to a holding area (open to sun/rain) and wait in two lines. During this time, most ppl adjust their belongings and get what they want to have with them for the day, some change clothes. Men are called 3 at a time, bags are then rechecked in for next 24 hours. One bag only means you can only have very limited stuff there. Not a place you can come with only the clothes on your back and build up your possessions by any means. When you check in your bag youre given a bed or overflow(mat on floor) #. There are 100-200 bunk beds, or you get one of the cot mats. Blanket provided. No pillow.Lunch is served mon-fri except on holidays/In order to keep your bed, u must be in by 4:15pm or you are not admitted. You can return at 2pm at earliest. You come back and get in line outside near the entrance if you come before 2pm.You are then forced to shower in jail-ish conditions with no privacy. Small stalls up to waist high provide minor modesty. Youre expected to be quick, 4-8 min is the norm. Push button water every 15 sec. Temp is controlled but water is perfectly warm, IMO. You are provided a towel and shower shoes if needed. A chunk of bar soap or squirt of shampoo in your hand if needed. Mon-wed-Fri you can get 1 change of clothes to keep if needed. You ask someone behind a desk and tell them your sizes, theres no shopping lol. I got lucky and got a decent shirt and jeans. After you shower its back to the chair area, where a movie is playing. Usually Christian or PG. No news, no TV.So its 430 but church doesnt start until 630. But youre trapped in the building and cant go outside. Youre not allowed to use your phone or laptop. Not allowed to roam the building. Waist high stalls in chair area bathroom in case you wanted to hide there and use phone or whatever. You CAN sleep, but only sitting up. There is no laying on floor, across chairs no matter how empty the rows are, or sitting against the walls. This is crazy to me. I watched ppl rudely woken up and was rudely woken up myself. Around 515 dinner is served. Breakfast and dinner are usually decent. 1 out of 4 meals, you get seconds.Around 6-630 ppl start heading to the chapel, no pews, just more hard plastic chairs. Loud Christian of all types blares thru a decent sound system. Much of it is actually decent, by Christian music standards. Dude who chooses the music is truly trying. During this time you can be in the chair area or chapel. Some read the newspaper near the chapel in the dining area.Around 715-730, you are forced to the chapel and bathrooms are actually locked. Youre forced to a Christian service no matter your beliefs. You are ordered to stand during prayer and reading of the Bible passages at the start. Also for any guest preachers prayers and ending prayer. Forced to attend. Forced to stand. No choice. Very cultish, if you ask me. Donations are solicited by passing of collection plates, odd, given those in attendance are only staff, long-term cult members (jk program-ers/dorm guys) and homeless seeking shelter. This is over at 830.At this time, most staff and dorm guys leave and homeless get in lines to go to beds. Overflow and first timers stay seated and get mats when they leave. You can finally lay down around 9-915.The next morning it all repeats. Very restrictive.AC is kept cold. Good in Houston.Food is good. Ppl are well behaved or cops called. If you dont sign on for the program or devout Christian, you wont enjoy it here.
No privacy in showers, change of clothes only available 3 days a week, no help with getting work, or ID or any documents, no help getting housing, we are forced to sit in the heat at check in. No quality control on staff hired, work program used as free labor, entire place needs a wash and, finally, staff is rude, uncaring, unsympathetic, and downright attacking anyone they feel isnt doing what they think you should. And they play favorites about who follows the rules and who doesnt need to. On top of everything else, the whole place is homophobic, transphobic, and sexist.
I was at the star of despair in 2011, treated like a convict. was not given enough food to survive, had to go to other resources to eat. was forced to stand in line, to ensure a place to stay rather than look for work or housing.religion was crammed down my throat, instead of help with resources to find work or housing, you are a religious prisoner, forced to conform to their idiotic schedule and thrown out if you so much as look at them wrong. in other words, human cattle. fire the staff and get some HUMAN BEINGS in charge.
After reading the reviews its sad that people like Christians treat people like trash and its always the Christians smh God dont like ugly the bible says God loveth a cheerful giver regardless what beliefs but people are just plain stupid 😧😢
Good place to stay 3 free meal
Actually I was posting a view of minute maid park, home of the Houston Astros.
So you bring someone here for help that they desperately need and they kick them out. What a flipping joke this place is and very disgusting!! Total waste of time and space. Should be shut down!
I agree with Nick Guzmans comment. I was spayed in the back of the head with a burning liquid many times. I think they make people BALD! The staff are rude too :(
Staff and the programers are rude and force church upon ppl
This Place Is A Sh!tH0|€. Full of Ignorant big mouth middle aged men that will probably be here for the rest of their pathetic lives. Most of them talk crap about new people that come here for help.
They are no good you gets no help staff is mo good
This place is worse than jail. Anyone who calls themselves Christians and associates or donates to this place should spend the night. I spent one week the years ago and it was the most disgusting amoral hypocritical experiences of my life. To force someone to sit through a sermon while questionable sexual activity takes place in the same facility is slapping God in the face.
Good Place To Be, Its TEXAS ...
Thanks for the reviews myself and my family will no longer be donating. Unless it out of our cars as well
Do NOT donate food or items to this place, for the staff, who treat their clients like absolute dirt, take the choice stuff home with them. These people should be fired and arrested.
We have renamed this place The Star of No Hope, worst place ever!!!!
My husband loved the star of hope got him turned back to Jesus
Whats advertised in their website they DO NOT have. Very disappointed in this shelter. I have a family member having to stay there and what hes telling that goes on there is not good.
Do not....I REPEAT DO NOT even think about coming to this place, these people do not even remotely care or even have a heart about who walks in or what the current situation youre in....they treat you like a prisoner and yoh will never get ahead...all they care about is money being funded to them by the state.
How many suitcases can you bring ?
Great place for New Beginnings!
There actually keeping you hostage for the time you stay there thats not helping anyone when they wont let you look for a job
I called the place and the gentleman was rude and knew nothing about what I was asking.
Id rather be homeless than stay there.
This place is what you make it to be for yourself. If you choose to not put any effort into getting out of the situations that caused you to come here in the first place, youll get nothing out of it. Especially if you want it how you want it.
Dont know
Food, rules that change at whim of staff
Its OK, waiting out the freeze
It saved my life
Reminds me of aushwitz
Considering it was clean
Horrible Place!!!!
Ride staff
I am very grateful to this place since it was the first one that welcomed me when I arrived in this country together with my friends. Very good treatment, food, bathroom, personal hygiene. We will be eternally grateful to the Cubans for this great place.
He helped me thanks to this organization God bless you enter in November 2016
