I have enjoyed living in the Calais Midtown apartments. The staff is friendly and very conscious of your needs. The apartments are much larger than other apartments. But once you step inside and see the archways and columns you will feel the character that these apartments brings. I have had the chance to live in 3 different styles of apartments here and each one suited my needs for that time in my life. When they say its in walking distance they mean it, so much to do right outside your door. Only 2 miles from downtown an easy train or Uber ride.

I feel very lucky to have found Calais. We moved in from out of state with our two cats and it has been incredibly welcoming and peaceful. After looking at maybe five different complexes, nothing could compare to the amazing location, bright spacious units, and modern decor of the common areas. The only thing better than the complex itself are the lovely staff that work tirelessly to make life here so pleasant and easy. It is evident that they put true thought and care into what they do, and that knowledge provides a huge sense of relief. We have lived here for almost two years and have no plans to go anywhere else anytime soon.

Couldnt speak more highly of Calais Midtown. The location itself is great but I wont speak much to that since almost any midtown apartment will give you similar walking accessibility to tons of great things (Whole Foods, bars, restaurants, etc).Calais has really great amenities that are often uncrowded. Whats more, the people at the office are 100% there for you. Bettie in the front office has always been there to help explain anything that needs explaining, even when my wife and I decided to cancel our lease to move into a home Bettie helped us decide on the best options to maximize the amount of savings for us. Love the location, love the office staff, will definitely miss living here

I have loved being a resident of Calais Midtown apartments since September of 2017. I moved in shortly after hurricane Harvey ravaged the city. My move in was delayed three weeks beyond the signing of my lease because flood waters had damaged the elevator. The manager graciously waved those weeks from me paying rent which they didnt have to do and I am very grateful. Calais Midtown has wonderful amenities and conveniences and feels safe, clean, and well maintained. The office staff are friendly, thorough, and helpful, bringing deliveries to my door after my having had surgeries. The maintenance staff are also courteous in addition to being skilled and efficient. Responses are always timely, convenient, and quick with minimal intrusion. Long term leases are always made available offering significant savings on rent costs. Ive been a resident for nearly four years and hope to stay long term.

I absolutely love The Calais! The community and staff are overall amazing. It’s a safe environment with plenty of great amenities, and the staff are always so kind and quick to respond to all of my questions and concerns. The location is great and there are lots of fun things to do right around the area. Moving here was a great decision and I plan to stay for a while!

I moved to Calais Midtown in December (without ever having stepped foot in the city prior), and these last six months have been nothing short of great. Not only is our unit beautiful, but also the staff at Calais Midtown have been incredible. Whether it is picking up packages, requesting maintenence, or simply enjoying the community amenities, Francisco and the rest of the Calais Midtown team have made every interaction enjoyable.I highly suggest moving here if you’re looking in the Midtown area — especially if coming here from out of town. The area is quiet but likely, and great proximity by both foot and vehicle to a wide variety of activities. The units are large, clean, affordable, and most importantly pet friendly. There’s also community events which draw people out of there apartments and a ton of amenities which make it easy to meet new people.I’m very happy with my decision to choose Calais Midtown, and look forward to more the community will over this summer.

Been here 8 months. The location is excellent. The staff is friendly and always willing to help! Clean grounds and maintenance is pretty fast. There is a loud bar on the smith side. I’m directly across from it and I can sing along with the music until 2am on the weekends. If noise is an issue have them place you on another side or in another building.Safe area, sometimes there’s riff raff but nothing in the actual building. It’s quiet inside at night.I’ll be re signing my lease unless the take a big escalation!

I have been living here for almost a year. Staff at the leasing office are really nice. But the problem is these thin walls. I had a neighbor drunk and party at 3am. I called their courtesy officers for 4 times, and no one answers your phone, and doesn’t solve your problem at all. Just be aware these thin walls from ceiling to your neighbor is going to be very loud, and causes me sleeping problems.

My boyfriend and I moved here in October and had to do everything virtually. The staff was super helpful and showed us all the amenities via FaceTime. All of our questions were answered and explained throughly! We were nervous about moving from Michigan to Texas without seeing anything, but the staff was super helpful and comforting. When we get here, everyone was super generous to offer any help we needed with moving. Any questions we had about the area, food and stuff for our dog, we answered. We couldn’t have picked a better place to move for our first place in Houston!

After I moved out I was forced to pay for a brand new oven when I did not receive one when I moved in, also an oven I used for two years and that should be expected to have wear and tear.I do accept that the oven had damage but it did not affect its functionality (sadly I cannot argue due to the virtual inspection), but regardless of this I should never have to be forced to pay for a brand new oven when I never got one.We were not able to have a physical inspection due to COVID, then this charge came in the final bill and I was forced to pay for a brand new oven or threaten that this was going to be sent to collections.I consider this an usurer situation, the first bill should have considered what I mentioned before (never got a new oven and used it for two years).Because of this, I truly regret moving into Calais.

I had an “okay” experience here. My move-in did not go smoothly—none of the paperwork had been done when I showed up/it seemed no one was expecting me so it took extra time to basically redo the entire checklist (that I had already completed and sent in) of insurance, deposits, etc. making us late to turn in our Uhaul and pay extra money. I was given the wrong keys, and several things including the fridge were not working. They charged me to clean the carpets, but when I moved in I was vacuuming up black hair (not mine) for weeks in corners of my bedroom. It was a okay apartment overall, but I wouldn’t describe it as “luxury” compared to other places in midtown. A few things I wish I would have known before living here would be that there is NO FREIGHT ELEVATOR. This made moving large items incredibly difficult—the couch didn’t fit in the regular elevator (which was often broken) so we had to carry it down/up stairs. There is also no way to reserve the elevator, and you have to park on the street (uhaul-wise) and walk through the garage. Parking is also mandatory— $40 a month. Just something to be mindful of if you are moving to use your car less or don’t have a car and want to be close to the train. Also mandatory trash collection which was another $25 (I believe, not sure entirely) a month. It’s great until your neighbors don’t put their trash out at the instructed times. However, the staff was friendly and I didn’t have many issues after my initial move-in experiences. Unfortunately the elevators also always smelled like dog urine, and many pet owners didn’t clean up after their dogs when they did have an accident, which is disappointing to see as an adult. Overall, it wasn’t anything to rave about but it wasn’t horrible.

Lived at Calais Midtown for 2 years and had a great experience! Staff was always communicative and helpful, and the prices are decent for the area. The arches and finishings in the apartments really make it feel like a home instead of an apartment. I lived in one of the smaller one bedroom units (Bagby), but even with 2 people working from home during covid for a year, it still felt spacious because of the fantastic layout. Overall, would highly recommend considering the Calais if youre looking to move to the midtown area!

We have lived at Calais Midtown for 6+ years, and have been here through alot of changes! Honestly, I think Calais is consistently the most affordable complex in the area with the largest floorplans. The Calais is convenient, walking distance of all the restaurants and amenities of Montrose, Midtown, and Mid-Main, across the street from Whole Foods, and within 15 min of Downtown, TMC, and the Heights. Although the area has gotten much busier over the years, its still in a fairly peaceful corner of Midtown, and close to the even quieter neighborhood of Westmoreland, where we walk our dog (btw, the Calais is very dog friendly!!). The main thing that has kept us here this long are the people. The leasing and management staff are friendly, supportive, and helpful, and weve gotten to know them closely over the years (especially Bettie, who is so compassionate, and personally has gone above and beyond to help my husband and I as weve gone thru some health problems). Bettie and Paco even secretly arranged for a getaway for my husband and I, just to help us through hard times-- thats the kind of help I would never dream to expect from a management team! Maintenance team is great too, extremely professional, and good about communicating with residents.Although the Calais has been a great fit for us, there are some quirks/issues that will be a problem for some folks, so its worth noting: the elevators are old and go out of service fairly often, its Midtown so the pool is usually completely full and loud on the weekends (keep in mind if you lease in bldg 1), gated visitor parking is getting more limited and isnt very clearly marked, the Calais uses package lockers and will charge you after 3 days, and yes quite a few residents dont pick up after their dogs in spite of several pick-up stations on-site.Although were finally moving on up to a house in the burbs, we will miss our Calais family!! Thank you Bettie, Paco, and the whole team. Youve really lifted us up!

I have loved living at Calais Midtown. The apartments have very nice finishes considering it is one of the older buildings in the area. I have had nothing but good and pleasant experiences with the staff and maintenance team here. They have always been quick to resolve any issues and questions/concerns I have had. The hallways are always kept clean and the pool area is always clean and well maintained. They do allow large dogs in this building so my only complaint is the dog barking, but that has nothing to do with the integrity of the team or complex. I have never heard noise coming from any of the other apartments, but the area is very loud. There is constant sirens, very loud cars, and people being loud and belligerent outside on the street... but that comes with downtown living. So far I have been extremely satisfied with living here and I am looking forward to the rest of my time here.

The garage doors to the parking structure are constantly kept open. Remotes barely work. Car was broken into and the lady we called was so rude about it. So many cars have been broken into. They had security for about two weeks and all of a sudden there was so security. I go to work every morning at 430 and don’t see anyone securing the cars. No cameras pointing at cars in the parking structures only at the elevator and only on one floor. Don’t move here if you have a vehicle.

I have lived here for the past 4 years and it has been nothing short of excellent. Anytime I have made a maintance request they are at my apartment within 24 hours and have the situation handled quickly and professionally. The garage gate has been troublesome but that is due to the manufacture of the gate and out of the control of the office. The lovely ladies who work the office are amazing! My wife and I got married while living here and they surprised us and decorated our apartment when we came back! They decorated it with pictures and even gave us a “Mr. & Mrs.” welcome mat. This is not the first time I have heard about the office doing random acts of kindness for their residents. This is the best place to live if you want to be closer to midtown/downtown area.

Maintenance is on-top of their game when it comes to getting things done quickly. My only complaint is that the elevator is consistently out and the garage doors seem to jam a lot. The area is fantastic within walking distance to a lot of great places. Just be in an apartment on the inside of the building structure so you dont hear the street noises. I can not emphasize enough how much the staff bends over backwards and tries to help residents out every step along the way. Quality team.

Very unprofessional staff. They have consistently given wrong information and have turned what is supposed to be an exciting time into a dreadful experience. I hope this changes but it appears as if that is unlikely. Several days of correspondence were necessary to receive a correct welcome letter and the staff seems unbothered by their mistakes and delays. They were very nice while showing the apartment but this quickly changed. EDIT: Dyllon, the leasing office manager, was very nice and eventually resolved the issues that we had. There is also a 24 Hour Fitness (that actually stays open 24/7) upstairs from those restaurants. You also have easy access to US 59, making most commutes that much easier.

In the beginning I was amazed with the amenities but of course they come with a price but that is not the reason of my low review. After a year of living there it was price convenient to move to another appartment complex..and then I saw the true face of Calais Midtown Apartments. We were the perfect tenants and yet with sadness I realized that the Apartment complex tried to charge us things that were ridiculous i.e. I had returned the keys and they decided to charge us for them claiming that we never did. Further they asked us to pay their crew to clean the house the way they want to and we did and yet they charge us 350 $ dollars more even when we had already paid their crew 140$. There were a bunch more charges like this but the most ridiculous one was when they asked us to pay for repainting the apartment and that was almost 700 $ for an apartment where we were living for a year. As I said earlier we were the perfect tenants and we really took good care of the appartment so there was no need for any of these things. Then I heard that they were upgrading the units and maybe that was why..In conclusion I realized that they tried to make as much money out of us so we decided not to pay all of their high fees and as a result they hired a company that tried to make us pay the money otherwise they would file a report something that could affect my credit score. I explained them the situation.. and the funny thing is that they took my side. During the last month in the apartments I was thinking to move back in as soon as I could find a roomate but then these unprofessionals things happened and now it is no my blacklist.I hope this helps.Thank you.

Dont do it. You know how your parents are always trying to tell you where to live and youre like nah ma I got this. Well, you dont and listen to your mother and dont live here. The staff are sadly incompetent and pretty rude. For example (I have plenty) I moved out over two months ago and have had to follow-up 4 times about my deposit that they owe me back... still waiting for that.... Theyve assured me they sent it along with all the necessary paperwork, etc... Ill let ya know when I get that - right along with my winning lottery ticket. The grounds (exterior/interior) are dirty and supposedly smoke free with plenty of smoked cigarettes in the hallways/stairwells to prove you otherwise. But dont worry - there are paper signs poorly taped to a door that say no smoking (insert eye roll here). Very few people clean up after their dogs and you can smell it. But I love dogs so this wasnt the worst thing in the world. The apartments themselves are large and have a nice layout (which granted the Calais their first star). However, It was so dirty when I moved in I couldnt believe it - my formerly white socks were black within 5 minutes. The walls are thin along with the windows and the Calais is close to the highway so lucky me - I didnt need an alarm clock in the morning I had the traffic to wake me up.The second star was nominated to the Calais for their maintenance staff. Any time I had a problem they fixed it (very well) within 24 hours - it was great... I looked forward to my next thing breaking because they really did follow-up very quickly.I know youve taken the time to read this long review and will certainly listen to your mother and not live here. I think youll regret it - but if you DO choose to live here - you can write a bad, albeit sarcastic review as well... and we can be friends.Cheers!

The Calais while in a great location in midtown is about the only good thing about these apts. The garage area has rats The trash shutes jam up every weekend (I imagine this has a direct effect on the rat issue) At least once a month the fire alarm goes off for some reason. Also if you do decide to move in make sure you get in writing that you do not owe them any money. I got a $100 water bill for the last 4 days I was in the apt even though I was already moved out. They sent it to a collection agency without even sending me a letter so know I have to pay twice the amount. The sole reason I would suggest living here is the location but everything else is not worth the hassle.

Calais is in a great location, and the units are high ceilinged and bright. I enjoyed my time living here (over two years) but the new management that took over late 2015 is a rather off putting. There were many issues with the transition, which is to be expected, however the new mgmt refused to demonstrate any leniency with existing, loyal tenants to changing, unexplained new requirements. I was charged an inordinate amount of late fees while out of the country the first few days of the month of the transition, and their justification was that I ignored papers left under my door. Well, seems a little unreasonable to serve someone an eviction notice after five days of unpaid rent due to a failure of your new autopay system to accept the old setup, but what would I know about treating customers with respect. Perhaps a phone call or email would have been in order if you were so concerned about my delinquent rent?Upon completion of my lease, I moved out ahead of my scheduled last day and despite having the unit professionally cleaned at my own expense, I was levied with $600 of post move-out cleaning fees with no explanation, no pictures, nothing. I requested details and was ignored for several weeks as management simply insisted I pay sight unseen. They cited server issues preventing them from sharing photos of the specifics I was being charged for, and blamed my email account (which was gmail) for not accepting their messages.Again, while living here I did enjoy myself, but the tiny pool and pretty pitiful fitness center left quite a bit to be desired. Rising rents in a tumbling local rental market were perplexing, and had I stayed in Houston I would absolutely have moved out of my unit after another 20% rent increase was demanded for me to continue my lease.I miss the area and the brightness of my unit, but having to deal with Bettie lying through her sugary sweet voiced teeth telling me I owed them for things that couldnt be substantiated simply isnt worth it.I echo many of the other reviews here and on Yelp-- avoid Bettie like the plague, she has no understanding of customer service and a seemingly low comprehension of rules and human decency.

When you rent an apartment, it is very common that things may break or need replacement so everyones reviews of things breaking is SO common in whatever you rent or even buy!!!! To complain on these reviews when you dont even have to pay for the maintenance is absurd, because if you owned a house, you would be paying for all these fixes yourself. The office staff and maintenance group have responded within a day every time and fixed the items to brand new. I would recommend this place to everyone. Great location, nice residents, friendly and helpful staff and the apartments are spacious and beautiful. Only downfall about this place is the lower level parking garage flooding. Knowing that we live in a rainy area, they need to hopefully find a resolution to the flooding issue.

DO NOT LIVE HERE!!!My fiancé and I were residents there for two years and the first year was really great. We enjoyed it so much that we signed a second lease. This is where everything went wrong! Up until a couple of months before we moved out we had only had minor issues such as having our microwave replaced and our washing machine leaking water, simple things like this compared to what we experienced next...Upon returning from being out of town for Thanksgiving we came home to find that our refrigerator was broken and covered in mold. Someone came to fix the refrigerator and we were informed it was working. I spent so much money on buying new food to replace everything that was thrown out, on top of the food that had gotten spoiled, only to find out the next day that the fridge had broken again. I was forced to throw all of this food out and put in a SECOND work order. We were told it was fixed again... NOPE! It was ridiculously hot again. In case the fridge broke for a third time I decided to buy all fresh food. The refrigerator broke for a THIRD time, this time everything froze and I had to throw out all of the fresh food. I had the maintenance man come out that night as this issue needed to be resolved ASAP. He asked if we wanted the entire refrigerator replaced which we happily agreed to even though we were told it would be smaller than the one we currently had. We both came home a couple days later to find the work order stating that he replaced a piece in the refrigerator rather than the entire fridge. The refrigerator then broke AGAIN for the FOURTH time. We spoke to some of the leasing agents that night, as we were obviously very upset. The maintenance worker had apparently told them we didnt want a new fridge at all. WE WERE LIVID. We FINALLY got a new fridge after more than TWO WEEKS!!!!Throughout this entire ordeal I had asked for a manager to contact me. I NEVER heard from the so-called manager Shelly. I should have known Id never hear from that woman as Ive walked into the leasing office before, as she was talking bad about a resident needing his broken washing machine fixed. I never got a single call, follow-up or anything from this manager. This was so absurd that I knew I did not to renew my lease for a third year if a manager wasnt going to take the time and follow-up.We thought moving out would be the end of the problems but they will find any excuse not to give you your deposit back!We spent the last two weeks cleaning to ensure the place was spotless and we got our deposit back. While moving things out we realized that during the entire time we lived in Calais for two years the dryer vent was never connectd to the dryer. Not only was this a fire hazard this explained why we had so much lent on the walls. We waited over the next 30 days for a letter, call, anything from Calais about our deposit, as it is required by law in Texas they send this to you. We never heard from them. My fiancé had to stop by the office to speak to someone about it only to be told that we didnt get our deposit back because it paid for part of our water bill and replacing the carpet. The carpet was installed so poorly that it started coming apart where it met the wood not long after we moved in. Even the leasing agent Gizella stated it was from normal wear and tear and that it was covered in our lease but because they had to replace the carpet we were forced to pay for it.Bottom line, DONT LIVE HERE ITS A WASTE OF MONEY AND MANAGEMENT IS THE WORST!

DO NOT RENT HERE!!! DO NOT RENT HERE!!! The office staff are the most ignorant, rude, moronic people I have ever known. They have not, one time, been kind, professional, or have done the basic of what their jobs should require of them. The pool (only one that ever works) is a constantly filled with floating debris and the defication remains of the birds that are a constant from thereb trees they have much too close to the pool. They (get this) even creep your facebook for information about you. They did my husband and ACTUALLY PRINTED off photos from FACEBOOK and attached a Calais notice stating they know we have an UNAUTHORIZED cat and have to pay SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS, or we are being evicted. This eviction INCLUDING MY AUTISTIC twin sons, one week before Christmas and shoved it through our door! My AUTISTIC sons read it and started screaming and were scared we were going to be homeless and take the NEWLY adopted cat from the humaneb society would have to go back. Needless to say, I will thank GOD when this NIGHTMARE of this horrible place is over.
