I did not experience anything that I did not like. They were just excellent. I love the honesty and great customer service. The staff were friendly, professional and very knowledgeable. Oz, the manager, is a very cool and understanding guy. He went above and beyond to help me with my rental experience. The car that I got was very clean and sanitary. Thank you Oz and the staff. I highly recommend this place to anyone that is planning a trip to Honolulu, Hawaii.
About an hour after I return the rental car, I realize that I left my car seat in there. I try to contact them but they give me an angry attitude and said they cant find it (they charge me for dirty car, and yet didnt see my car seat, which is almost as wide as me???) Also, when I received the rental car, it was extremely dirty, and they still charge me for cleaning, such scam. One of the worst rental car company. Car seat is something that use to protect a child, but because of their greed, they stole the car seat, so my child wont be protected on my way home. This is my first, and my last time rent a car here.
DO NOT WORK WITH THEM. I got charged about 60 bucks after returning the car. No explanation from them, the invoice also show the charge should be 0 since I prepaid, and impossible to reach them by phone. The only reason I can think of is the cleaning fee, according to the contract. However, the car was smelly and dirty since I got it. No extra trash was left behind and still got charged for cleaning fee - I don’t think so. I recommend whoever got charged, please call your bank to dispute the charge.In addition, they gave me the car even they already know the remote key doesn’t work. I saw the rep walk around pressing the key several times to see if it works. I thought it was resolved before they hand it to me. I left the store and later had to come back and asked for an exchange. What kind of business would give customer the car which they knew is having problems?I should have paid just 50-60 bucks more to rent from established companies to get newer and cleaner car and a peace of mind.DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY!
This place is a scam. They masquerade themselves an affordable option for car rentals but there are hidden fees. My husband and I had to wait over an hour to pick up our rental even though we had reserved it weeks prior to our arrival in Honolulu. We arranged everything through Expedia and paid the entire amount. When we got there, however, they basically told us it would be a mistake not to purchase their “extra coverage” even though we were covered through our insurance. We were told that if anything happened to the car, whether or not it was our fault, we would be billed a daily fee until the car was repaired to compensate for the time it was off the road. We went ahead and purchased the extra coverage for piece of mind.The car we received was filthy inside and out, it felt mechanically unstable and the key fob had a dead battery so the rep told us we would have to use the valet key to get into the car. He was then “kind enough” to clue us in on a trick on how to start the car with a dead key fob. Smelled horrible too!!Nothing happened to the car while in our care, yet a day after returning it, a $60 charge showed up on our credit card. When we called to find out why, the rep on the phone was very rude and told us we would have to wait for someone from their billing department to return our call probably in 72 hours. That “people are dying out there from covid” so we had to wait our turn.DO YOURSELVES A FAVOR AND GO WITH ANY OTHER COMPANY. I unfortunately thought going with Expedia would be good but not so much.
I normally don’t leave reviews, but I felt inclined to do so this time. As others have mentioned, it’s a pretty scummy place. They were rude when I went to pick up my car, and they attempted to coerce me into purchasing the extra coverage. I declined because I knew I would not damage the car. I made sure to top off the vehicle with gasoline and clean it out well before dropping it off. Alas, as others mentioned, I was randomly charged $60 the day after I dropped it off. I didn’t even bother calling to fight it. They can keep the measly $60, I will just do my part in preventing them from getting business by leaving this bad yet honest review.
As everyone else has said, this place is a typical cheap rental agency. Make sure you ask for receipts up front and inspect your car before taking off. Usually I am a lot better about this but we got taken for a ride, got needlessly upgraded under false pretenses and given a car with a mechanical problem. Airbag light started showing errors on the dash on the last day of our trip but was on the whole time. Suffice to say the agency doesnt care that we were mislead and wont issue any refunds nor cares that we could have been badly injured in their car.
Excellent customer service! I was promptly greeted and a rental agreement was underway. They worked with me on the price and even upgraded me at no cost, I guess because I am military. I surely appreciated it! I think the people helping me were, the new Black young lady, the Black guy who started working there right before her and a Hawaiian guy (Oz, I think?) They were terrific!
I wish there ZERO stars to give this rental company. The car was awful. Old, beat down with over 90,000 miles on it. The staff did not care about our concerns and to make matters worst we had to get an Uber for our return flight home because shuttle did not run until 8am. After we expressed our concerns, the rental agent didn’t even make eye contact, walked away and nor offer to take us to the airport. Total rip off. Never again!!
Highly recommend NOT renting from here. Off-site, 10 minute Shuttle drive, West of Airport. Looks like a Used Car Lot. Waited over 30 minutes to get car. Initial and Sign on pad without ability to see contract. Reserved a Fiat 500. None on the lot. (Dont actually rent the car.) Upgraded me to a Hyundai Accent. Car was absolutely filthy and had so many dents, scrapes, and dings, I just took pictures of every part of the car. May be inexpensive, but you get what you pay for with this place. Again, would recommend NOT renting from here.
BEWARE.. This place is a scam! I reserved a car from this place via Priceline.com. It was PREPAID. When I got home from my trip and check my Credit Card statements, I noticed a charge from A1 Rental Car in Honolulu few days after I picked up the vehicle for more than the amount that I already paid for. Additionally, when I dropped off the vehicle, my receipt says that I owe zero dollar. I am notifying my credit card company and reporting these scam artists.. aargh.
Oz went out of his way to accommodate our family!! Despite the reviews my experience was pleasant this is an economy rental agency helps save money so cars won’t always be in pristine shape. And that’s ok it got us from point a-b with no troubles. Thanks again to the team! Patience is key!!
Despite the bad reviews, I had a great experience with A-1. Called in 2x to extend the length of my rental and they were happily able to accommodate my schedule, with the same daily rate originally quoted (keep in mind, this is during Spring Break). Great experience, will be renting with them again in the future!
I found this company several years ago and have used them ever since. I make frequent trips to the island and have always received great vehicles at a fair price. I have never seen mystery charges on my credit card as some reviewers have suggested. They can get really busy during the summer months so be patient and polite. Just used them again a few weeks ago and the shuttle driver and the people at the desk were really friendly and accommodating. I will use this company again for sure. Thanks A-1!!
The good news: they have cars at lower prices than the majors. The bad news (and there’s a lot): cars are old and rode hard. Ours was a Nissan with 78,000 hard miles on it. When I got a flat on North Shore, they offered no assistance. Told me to repair the tire myself. Then told me I shouldn’t have driven so far (37 miles…?!). When returning this jalopy they offered no compensation for my trouble. Avoid this business.
My experience was wonderful and I dont write reviews often. Skinny black David (he told me to make sure to describe him correctly because there is another David that was skinny and white) was a huge help to me! My drivers license was expired and I didnt even realize it and as I was panicking he explained to me how I could get in renewed on line so that I could still rent a car. (This would have ruined my trip if I couldnt get a car). He was so helpful, patient and nice!! Also the two female drivers that picked me up and dropped me off at the airport were very sweet! One was Moki and the other was stalky strong woman with short white hair.
This business shouldnt be allowed on Expedia. Hidden charges and everything add up to be the same as Avis or Hertz, plus the cars are all used dirty low quality. Very disappointed

They were rude towards me when I got there. I asked about how much an extra day would cost and she told me it would depend on the day. I told her and she could not give me a price. All she kept telling me was that I had to have the car back on time or they would charge me over one hundred dollars. These cars are like our children she told me. We got the car back 2 hours before our scheduled time and they told me everything was ok. I got home and 3 days later they charged me 59.85. I have called left messages and called many times and no response. I will NEVER go with them again and I hope that you do not go with them either. Very disappointed
I rented a vehicle from Economy car rental, which is the same as A1 Rent A Car. My experience has been exactly what everyone else has stated in their reviews. The vehicle was run down, had dents and scratches all over the exterior, and the interior wasnt much better. The lady working the front let me know there would be an extra cleaning fee if I brought the beach back with me, but a little sand and stuff would be fine. After driving away I realized the shocks were shot, which is a safety concern, but I convinced myself I wasnt buying the vehicle and it should be fine. The vehicle worked for what I needed it to for the week I had it.. Before dropping the car back off I took it to a car wash and washed the exterior and vacuumed the interior as well. I wanted to make sure I wasnt charged an extra cleaning fee. When I dropped it off, the guy took a minute to look the vehicle over and said everything was good. Two days later, I was going through my credit card statement and saw a $60 charge from them. I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and will also be filing a dispute with my bank for the unauthorized charge. I cant believe they have been doing this to everyone and are still able to operate. Word of advice, pay a little more and go somewhere else.
OK honestly I am a harsh reviewer and critic of poor customer service… I don’t know why these guys don’t get better scores. We have rented from them multiple times and it has been a good experience each time. This is not a high frills place to be sure but their cars are solid and the price is better than anywhere else you will find on the island especially when things are busy. Every time I’ve rented I’ve gotten a minivan that is in decent shape and does everything I need it to. I’ve rented from almost every other car rental agency around and you can definitely find places with a nicer lobby and newer cars but you also pay dearly for all of those things which I simply don’t care about (especially in Hawaii). This last time, I booked the car after a short conversation with John the owner. We got picked up at the airport a few minutes after collecting our baggage by Sharon who was incredibly helpful and kind. In renting the car, the general manager Oz helped me and could not have been better to work with. Again after having worked with them multiple times I would rent from them again in a heartbeat and will tell others the same thing! Don’t let the other silly reviews fool you.
The most rude encounter on the phone. When I said we were running late the worker (a guy not sure his name) immediately said “then what are you doing on the phone? get over here” and subsequently hung up on me. Would not recommend

Would leave zero stars if possible...representative on phone was so horrific that I opted to rent elsewhere. The numerous negative reviews are here for a reason!I reserved one car online through my credit card company, but their website was acting up, so I called directly to rent a second car as we have a family group of 10 and needed more than one vehicle.The man who answered the phone was rude and angry from the moment he answered. He yelled at and cursed at me because I asked to hold the car with my credit card and have my aunt pay for the car when she picked it up (I land after the rental agency closes but my aunt arrives hours earlier). I was not suggesting I would drive the car until we could come back in the next day and add me as a second driver. Ive done this before elsewhere and did not realize it would be a problem. After being lectured about how Im trying to break laws and get him fired and how annoying customers are because everyone just wants what they want I offered to call back with my aunts credit card number if that would be easier for him. I was told he was halfway through the transaction and if I would just shut the f* up, he would finish booking the car. When I tried to apologize for anything I might have said to set him off, he yelled at me again, told me to just shut my mouth and say thank you when he was done, that I had no idea what it was like on that end working seven days a week, that 2 of his co-workers had already committed suicide, and that he was quitting as soon as he finished my reservation. I was speechless. I was on the verge of saying I was not comfortable completing the transaction when he said, There...done, and hung up on me.I immediately cancelled the reservation made through my credit card company and tried to call back to talk to a manager. Nobody would answer the phone, so I left a message. I then called the car sales side of this business hoping to talk to someone before my credit card was processed. A very curt manager named Lee first shut me down saying that nobody there would speak to a customer that way (clearly from the other reviews here, that is patently untrue!) When I persisted in telling him what had transpired, he was neither any friendlier nor apologetic for his employees behavior, but he did agree to make sure the reservation was cancelled. Im still a bit concerned whether Ill see charges show up and need to work through American Express to dispute them, especially after sharing my experience here.I have never been so appalled by customer service that I opted not to do business with a company, especially with rental cars being so hard to come by right now, but I cannot imagine how I would have been treated if there were an issue later if this is how they treat potential customers.
Run! This place is the worst and John is incredibly rude. He is so rude to people. I was just asking basic return questions. The car was filthy, and barely ran. Pay extra someplace else it’s totally worth it.. bedsides they’re going to hit you with all sort of bs fees when you return the car anyways. The. Tell you they don’t have the time to tell you what the fee is even for!! Terrible customer service can’t get any resolution with them. I cleaned and vacuumed out the car was told by the employee upon I’m the return inspection that it was “clean and full of gas, there would be no additional charges” then they slapped a cleaning fee on it. I returned the car in better condition than when they gave it to me!! The staff needs some additional customer service training and basic human decency training ASAP

This company has wrongfully charged me for an upgraded car that I never drove. They have the rudest person that has ever walked the earth answer the phones, and he told me that when I return the car, they will credit me the money. So when I return the car, the lady said she was not authorized to give me my credit, but will tell Panda to credit me the money, and even left me a hand written note as proof. They still have not paid me. Please do not ever work with this car rental company. It is worth paying more, and going with a company that has integrity and is trust worthy.
Rented a car through them. First thing I noticed was the radio didn’t work well at all. Second thing was the car seemed as though it was in desperate need of an oil change. The price seemed right but once we returned the car and the guy said it would be all set. I saw the receipt. 1 the car was bellow a half tank of gas when I got it on the receipt it said the car had a full tank of gas. So if I hadn’t filled it up they would have charged me 10.00 a gallon. Then when we got home my wife got a hit on her credit card a second time. Which makes 0 sense because we had paid for everything for this vehicle coming out to 226.00 but because of all the other fees it ended up costing us 340.00! + trying to hit the card again! I was honestly very discouraged with this company and will not be bringing them business no matter how good a deal it seems.
DO NOT RENT from A-1 Honolulu ...The worst rental car ever...They told me to get insurance from them, so i did, cancel Travelocity insurance... Then when i came back for return, the front bumper certain drop down, no dent no crash, bumper just drop down like that, i told the guy from the office, he said that i caused the damage, i told them that i paid for the insurance thru them, he told me NO COVERAGE COLLISION so i need to pay them for the damage. I told them NO, i already paid the insurance, and you told me that i already paid the insurance, any problems with the car, just came back, walk out, worry free Then he started to curse at me, and told me dont board his shuttle to the airport. So Rude, i tool Uber...This place is a scam and TRAVELOCITY had their service on, i dont understand, so many bad reviews, and TRAVELOCITY still share few pennies on them.. Travelocity should look into this company and take out of their SCAM Service
I received a car in very poor condition that was priced at over 2000 for two weeks. The vehicle doesn’t drive safely. I found an alternative mode of transportation after one week, however they refused to refund me. I will be contacting the better business bureau in hope that this doesn’t happen to anybody else. I’ll post updates after my case is resolved.
I just rented a car (best price by far) and spoke with the nicest guy. Super friendly, helpful, and got my reservation done in 5 minutes! We come to Hawaii once a year and always rent from A-1 Rent A Car!
Zero star if I could give - we should have listened to the review below they are cheap for a reason extra $40 charged for the cleaning fee which we got no additional email/conversation about it. The thing is we never went to the beach and making sure we clean everything before returned. We called them after explaining what happened and they just hanged up on us. Called again and never picked up. How rude is it!!! Never going to deal with this sketchy business in the future.
Worst ever car rental. They charge your cc for no reason and when you call they say they will call back in 72 hours. No one calls and eventually you have to report your bank to get money back which takes weeks. Never ever go to this car rental.
Theres simply no reason to rent here. All of the bad reviews are accurate, I only wish I had read them BEFORE I picked up the car.We arrived roughly 2 hours after our scheduled rental start, waited 1.5 hours after signing in to be seen, and were told our rental was canceled because we were late. First I was told their policy is a 1 hour window before automatic cancellation, and then a manager said it was 2 hours (fyi this policy isnt written anywhere). Reputable companies give you a relatively large arrival window in case of flight delays, traffic, etc. I was offered to rebook at a much higher rate (roughly double what my original agreement was for), which I was essentially forced to accept because other reputable companies were now hundreds higher for a last second 3 day rental. I was given a 2014 Jetta with a completely broken remote, but wasnt told it was malfunctioning and didnt discover it at first as the unfriendly manager started the car for me. About an hour after we drove off I realized the remote wasnt working when I parked and tried to lock the car, only to find it kept setting off the alarm. Fortunately the car could be locked with the physical key. In general the car drove fine (major body scratches aside), but I wouldnt have trusted the tires in bad weather. Upon return I was checked in and told EVERYTHING IS GREAT, GOOD TO GO. Today I see a mysterious charge for $39.85, which seems to be the cleaning fee everyone was hit with. The car was left in the same condition I received it (and I have photos to prove it). This company should be shut down for misleading customers, charging spurious fees, and providing vehicles that even bankrupt Hertz would be embarrassed by.
Save the headache and go somewhere else for your car rental. What a night mare, they only had one shuttle to pick you up, 30 min wait at the airport. When I check in, got scammed on buying there car rental insurance stating that in Honolulu, there are a lot of car accidents that occur and I would not have to pay one penny out of pocket for collision. Once the car was given to me, to say that the car was dirty and filthy is an understatement. The right bumper was sticking out, the seats had stains on them, etc. When I asked for another car, they stated that this was the only one available whereas, there were several sitting in the parking lot. NEVER AGAIN.

No stars, Worst experience renting a car. would have been cheaper to use the buss. First car had a headlight out. 2nd car had over 80,000 miles and was not clean. when we returned it they charged another $39 for what I dont know because I didnt get an explanation for the charges.
This place is awesome! We got a great price and and the car was clean and reliable. I called to extend the return time and they had no problem accommodating me. The desk person was friendly and fast for check in and return. I would definitely use them again and recommend them to save some money. They are offsite from the airport but they had a shuttle waiting to and from the airport.
A-1 Rent A Car in Honolulu, HI was the worst experience of my life. Dealing with them ruined my trip, and they have the worst customer service (all of them are RUDE). The engine exploded on our car within 5 minutes of pick-up, on the freeway. We pulled over popped the hood, and the oil cap was popped off, and there was no oil in the car, causing pressure, and engine was shattered. When I called and told them what happened, they stated, If that makes you feel uncomfortable, you can come back and exchange your car, just make sure you fill the gas tank back up for the gas you used. I told them we couldnt even drive the car! It wouldnt turn on without shaking. We waited over 2 hours for a tow truck and new rental. The new rental only had a quarter tank of gas, and I called and spoke to the manager, Panda, and he told me to return the vehicle with only a quarter tank, and hell put notes in my account. I returned it at 5AM (before they opened and put my keys in the drop box), and sure enough, they charged my Credit Card $10/gallon (over $100), since I returned it with a quarter tank!!! I have been trying to contact the manager (Panda) for over 3 days now, and he is never available. I finally spoke with a different manager (I didnt catch his name), and I told him the whole story, and all he said to me was, Wait, lets back up to the first car. How much gas did you use before the engine exploded? and I told him, We drove 5 minutes away from your company and it exploded, so barely any gas at all. Then he told me to hold. I was on hold for 20 minutes before he hung up. I gave him the benefit of the doubt that maybe we were disconnected and called him back, he put me on hold for over 20 minutes again and hung up again. I am disputing all charged with my Credit Card company, and reporting them to the BBB (which is an F rating, by the way)! Every review (they only have 1.8 stars) or complaint about them has been that the company charges your credit card without authorization MULTIPLE times, and will not refund or answer/respond to your calls. I have no idea how they are still in business and running this scam! I hope this helps so nobody else has to deal with these people.

If I had a way to rate negative I would. Never in my life have I seen shady people like this. The vehicle was 6 years old Altima with over 60k miles.Scratches and dings all over the place. The inside was filthy. I read reviews where people were charged for cleaning right and left. I got the car washed and vacuumed. I even left the manager on duty a brand new bottle of all purpose cleaner that I used to clean their filthy car. The guy told me I am all set and thanked me for the cleaner and had a conversation. To my surprise they hit me with a $39.85 that I did not authorize. I call on to the Honolulu authorities to shut this place down.
Im not one to ever post a review, but unfortunately our experience post return has been comically bad. Embarrassing actually. Its a shame because the agent we worked with on site was INCREDIBLE and kind - we even brought her some baked goods as a thank you. However, whoever is at the phones is not kind or helpful and sounds hurt. Bring your business elsewhere if you can. Mahalo to the wonderful woman on site!
Initially interested due to the cheap prices, but a cheap price typically comes with a cheap product. Terrible customer service. Couldn’t find the keys to the first vehicle after doing all the paperwork and ended up having to redo the process for the second vehicle. Mentioned the brakes squeaked the whole time and they didn’t seem to care. Asked when picking up the vehicle if I needed to extend if they would allow it. Employee didn’t mention the daily rate would go from $20 a day to over $50 (continued to rise every time I extended).Also, CHECK YOUR BANK STATEMENTS. I received a final receipt through email and after reading reviews, several people said to check the account they have on file because of this company making extra transactions that were not authorized. Disputing the additional $40 they charged me after I received my receipt. Go to Thrifty or another quality company and you’ll have a piece of mind during your trip.
Rented a car from A1 and economy because they were the cheapest and we didn’t care much about having a nice car while on the island. Mistake! The car was ok and got us around just fine although was older and didn’t have any way to charge or connect phones so only had radio while driving. Had a great conversation with Oz the manager who set us up and, although didn’t provide us with any paperwork which he said he would email and didn’t, was friendly and efficient.After we turned in the car they said we were good to go and then we got a surprise $50 charge 2 days later with no information as to what or why. When calling to inquire about it they didn’t pick up the phone multiple times and finally a man answered and I asked if Oz was available to which he responded “nope he’s with a million customers”. When I asked about the charge he was immediately super rude and annoyed about looking into it. When asked if that was really how he was going to treat his customers he said yeah defiantly. I asked what his name was, he mumbled something, and hung up. Nobody picked up when called back. Not cool! Wouldn’t rent from here again or recommend it to anyone.
They are not at the airport.. service is slow.. The car was old. Had no Bluetooth. Brake rotors were warped. Seats were wet. Had to put towels down when we first got in. Then they charged $50 to vacuum the car after return. One would think a quick cleaning is standard. Wish I read reviews ahead of time

AGAIN, EVERY TIME I CALL TO TRY AND GET THEM TO SEND THE FORM, THEY HANG UP ON ME. UNPROFRESSIONAL AND RIDICOLOUS.
I should have read the reviews before renting here through a 3rd party. Car was returned and looked at by them. I was told it is paid on there is a $0 balance. A couple days later I received a $40 fee with no notification or receipt. There was no damage to the car and no need for unusual cleaning.
So glad we found this car rental place! We arrived to Hawaii hoping we could Uber but found out it wasn’t very popular and very expensive. Every other car rental place was approx $3000 for the week to rent a car. We paid $580 here. Yeah, maybe the cars aren’t the best but we were able to get where we needed for a fraction of the normal cost to rent a car. We booked through the Hopper app. Customer service was great.
Do Not Book if you have an Early Flight (when you leave Oahu). They would not allow you to drop off vehicle before 8:00am HST if you have an early flight. The customer service person was unnecessarily rude in discussing the options we would have. He stated our only option is to drop it off the night before by 7:00pm HST - in a rude tone and then hung up. He said this was because of car thefts. None of this was every communicated with us when we rented the car, or picked it up. This resulted in us having to spend $60 on an Uber to Haleiwa, where we were staying for one more night, and then take a $150 airport ride at 5:30am HST the next morning to catch our 8:00am HST flight.Note to the leadership at this company: vehicle theft is not a consumer problem, its a A-1 Rent A Car problem. Other car rental companys have controls in place to prevent vehicle theft from happening. Improve your customer experience, and your reviews/ratings will likely improve. We rented a car from A-1 Rental Car for 30-days which Im sure was great for your business, and despite that, we were treated extremely poorly from a customer service perspective on something that is your problem, not your consumers. Given the experience we had, I will never rent from an Economy Rental Car or any of its affiliates again because it obviously doesnt value customer service.
Well, not surprised that as I came in to write my review, that the average rating is quite abysmal already. In any case thought Id give my 2 cents, perhaps help save someone time and dignity.I booked through my Credit card company and called the number provided on their website. The guy who answered was extremely rude and was not even letting me complete my questions. He would keep cutting in and told me that anything I needed to ask I could do that when I arrived at their location to pick up the car. FFS why even have the customer service number on the site then. That was enough for me to cancel my reservation and go with a more trusted brand and not a second rate, hill billy owned joke of a car rental service. Good riddance.
Old vehicles with bad smell. We got a Versa which happened to have the A/C broken and we ended up breaking out trip to go back and get the vehicle changed. The service was also bad, they work from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and you do not have a way to return your vehicle while they are closed; I arrived at 7:00 a.m. and even though there was a worker, she did not want to receive the keys and asked me to wait until they open at 8:00 a.m. (I was not going to loose my flight because she did not want to do her job!).
This place is cheapest! (1 star worthy). When we received the rental, it had 120k+ miles on it. The car was unstable on the hiway, and it smelled like a spit bottle was spilled in the car. There was no other substitute so we were pretty much stuck with this car. The smell was somewhat bearable so we stuck with it. The problem is after the car was returned, we were charged additional $39 with no explanation. We called to find out what the charge was for and they blocked my phone number and when I called with another phone number, they said they will call, but now we cant contact them with either phone numbers. Pretty shady in my opinion
I wont rent from here ever again. At first I was given a vehicle with expired tag, when I called to let them know they transfer me to Oregon location when I rented the car from Honolulu. I was short of time to check in so I called if they can pick up the car from the airport. The gentleman answering the phone was RUDE, his tone went from sweet to aggressive telling me they dont have a way to pick up the car and I have to drop it off and their shuttle can bring me back. (They are a rental car service, they could have tried to accommodate my request.) Then they secretly charge a cleaning fee on my card with no email or notice. So is this place not cleaning cars even with Covid? but yet we have to get Covid testing every time we go to Hawaii???? I am from Hawaii and people are suppose to be nice and welcoming. The worse experience ever while going back home. So I will NOT EVER rent from here again. Btw you get 1 start because I have to to pick 1, if I had a choice it will be none.

Horrible experience!!! Warning!!! We hardly had anything that needed to be vacuumed in the car and the guy was going to charge us a fee of $100. He was rude! He said that we can leave the car as is and will see a charge on our credit card. We told him it was not excessive and he said that fine leave the car as it is and you will not use our shuttle to get back to the airport. I told the man that the car rental included the shuttle cause he was mad trying to tell us to take the Uber “you can’t use our shuttle and it courtesy.” He is horrible and beware of rude customer service and poor vehicles rented out. They will charge you for anything so listen and learn!! Just read the other reviews.
As most people we had to rent here because it was our only option as all other were taken. Oz helped us, and as with many of you he was really nice when we picked up the car. When we finally got our car it was not what we reserved it was an economy instead of intermediate. The car was in bad shape so we asked to be changed, however, we still did not get a viable vehicle and when I inquired about the car size, he said it was and walked away. We also got charged extra and treated us VERY disrespectfully when we called to inquire about the charges. He hanged up the phone twice on me for questioning the charges, and telling him that I was only trying to understand what we were being charged in addition to having proof that the was not a valid charge. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE.
Highly recommend not renting from these guys, they did not return my deposit, when I called to ask why they hung up on me.
After the trip they charged me almost $40 extra. I called just to know why they charged me that extra amount and they told me (in a very unfriendly way) that that was a cleaning fee. It´s not the first rental car I drive and always take care of leaving on the same way I take it from the rental place. They told me that I signed a rental agreement where it was said something about the cleaning fee. I tried to find that agreement on my email and I just found a short one where you can see the payment info but nothing about the cleaning fee. I called them again and in a very rude way they told me they were gonna send me the agreement the same day after telling me that usually they charged between $50-$100, (so, besides I had to be grateful for being charged with just $40?). They never sent me the agreement, I called again the next day, Saturday, they told me they were going to send it on Monday, and nothing... so a week later I called back again and after explaining the whole story again, they just hung up the phone without saying anything!!! Very disappointing.So, it seems cheap, but take in to account that you will have to pay between $40-$100 extra?
I wish I could leave zero stars this company has provided the absolute worst customer service. I requested a final receipt and was assured it would be emailed prior to leaving in a shuttle. 2hrs later the gentlemen answering the phone has hung up one twice and I do not have the final bill. When asking for Oz the manager thay others have suggested I was told her was off today. I will be filing a BBB complaint and take legal action for any additional charges.

I called A1 rent a car to ask a simple question about returning the vehicle that I rented. The phone conversation that I had left me speechless - the initial phone conversation I had with the representative was horrific. I started to ask my question and he stopped me and literally said- “can we speed this up so I can answer your question in 50 seconds or less”. Since I had already been charged for an extra day, I wanted to see if I could change my return time to 6:30 instead of 5 (my flight time had changed). He said he had to get off the phone and then hung up the phone. Before he hung up, The representative kept calling me ma’am l, but when I corrected the representative and said that I was actually a sir, that’s when he got even more hostile.I called back because I wanted to make sure that I would still be able to have shuttle transportation to the airport if I returned the vehicle at 630 and when he answered he said “I can’t take any more calls about this. You know what, return the car at 5 or you’ll be charged an extra day.” I tried explaining to him that I had already paid for an extra day since I picked up the car at 10am 3 days prior. He then disconnected the call. The service was absolutely horrific and now I am being charged extra for no reason.I told him that I would simply return the car at my original time and he said he’ll still charge me for the extra day. As a flight attendant, I don’t understand got someone who works with customers can treat someone so nasty. I will be disputing this with the better business bureau and with my bank.This homophobic company is atrocious and I don’t understand how they’re still in business.
After arriving from the airport I was greeted by staff whom helped me through the process. This vehicle got me around the island and I it was also gas efficient. When returning the vehicle the manager was also very helpful. Thank you for the great service.. mahalo

Do NOT rent from here. It’s a scam. They claim to charge you a cheap rate, then you will find random charges from them on your bank weeks later. They scammed us out of $500+. Please do not give this place your service, it needs to shut down. Save yourself the trouble and pay a little more someone legitimate and trust worthy. Go to thrifty instead. You get what you pay for, this place is unprofessional, not trust worthy, money hungry and crooked. You’ve been warned.

EDIT: Next day after return, I see a charge of $49.85 on my credit card. I am disputing this transaction through my bank. Do not deal with this car rental agency!!!They operate a fleet of mostly Nissan Versa, all cars in a different condition. The reason I give two stars is the car we got on our first day - a 2015 white Versa in a less than optimal condition. The car had a few mechanical issues: loud noise coming from the rear axle, bad breaks, phone charger did not work, wipers were old, the windshield was foggy on the inside. I returned the car the following day, and the agency gave me a much better car with no problems. The staff was nice and professional, the shuttle was available to us right away.I’m not sure if we will use them in the future again, renting a car here is like playing a roulette- it’s just a pure luck with what you can get.
So happy with our rental for our family vacation. Easy to book, great communication when we showed up and friendly shuttle from the airport. Definitely recommend!

Do yourself a favor and DO NOT RENT from this company! Listen to the other reviews! Their price might be cheaper but the overall experience is terrible! First of all, they are located wayyyy outside the airport and the shuttle takes forever to arrive. We didnt get our car until like 2 hours from when were suppose to pick it up. The car we received was not in good condition. The tire pressure light turned on within 30 mins of leaving the place. Then the same night, one of the rims of the car fell off! When returning the car, they charged us $42 for the rims. A couple days later, I have an unknown charged from them of $50. I tried calling them a bunch of times and most of the time they would put me on hold and hang up on me. Terrible customer service!!! Apparently from reading these reviews, the charge is for having sand in your car. They never told me about this charge and I even vacuum the car prior to returning it! Its FREAKING HAWAII!!! Theres gonna be sand in the car regardless! You would think everyone is nice in Hawaii, but this company is straight trash. Do yourself a favor and take your money somewhere else. Its worth paying extra somewhere else rather than dealing with this company.

Worst experience of my life. Got a flat tire and there was no spare in the car. They told me to tow the car to a tire shop- which I did. They then screamed at me for doing so and refused to give me another car. Joe is unprofessional and just mean. They will not reimburse the $300 towing fee. I had a horrible experience all around. Find someone else to rent with, these people are awful.

The owner told me I could just return the car if I didn’t want to extend at the rate they want. And that I can go somewhere else. They clearly don’t care about the customer. I rented a car and returned it this week. Two days later I received a second charge with no explanation. I have called about 8 times and the line has never been answered. No voicemail picked up. I have a receipt from the original rental and have not received any documentation from the 2nd charge. I will be disputing this with the credit card company as there is no service at this location.They are less expensive but the car had no frills, was beat up, and higher mileage. That’s okay by us at that price but expect to pay extra on the backend unexpectedly. I’m sure they assume with us being tourists we aren’t repeat clients anyways why not sneak on extra fees.
We had a Turo rental lined up for when we arrived on island and it canceled on us after we arrived. Thankfully the rental was on the same street as A1--we walked in and they took care of us immediately, and at a lower price than anything on Turo!The car worked great, it was clean and efficient. They also offer a free airport shuttle.Definitely the best choice for car rentals!

This company took additional unaccounted money out of my bank account that I did not authorized. At first they denied it. Next they said that it was for a cleaning fee. Then they said my total was split into 2 separate payments, but didnt know why that was. I called them out for embesslment, and they hung up on me. Will definitely be contacting the better business bureau. They are crooks.
Not even worth 1 star! Extremely rude customer service, so unprofessional. Bed bugs and cockroaches in the first vehicle we were issued. When explained the situation we lost 3 hours out of our day making the exchange. No apologies, no reimbursements for bug bombs we used in the car. No compensation what so ever. This vehicle also had a running light out in the back. Which we found out by a person following us. The second vehicle had a DO NOT RENT, CAR IS SOLD sign on the console. So we were literally driving someone elses vehicle. Both cars were filthy and gas tanks were half full, but they made it clear to have the tanks full on return or we would be charged $10.00 a gallon. Do not waste your time with this company, not worth the money you may think you will save. Pictures were from a second bombing.

The young man came out to grab keys out of one vehicle AND give them to my husband. Which was a standard size vehicle newer and clean. When he brought my husband out he put him in a different vehicle that was older and dirty and considered a compact vehicle. Unfortunately I did not have my paperwork with me to show him that we had reserved a standard vehicle. We were in Hawaii and didnt want to argue with them we just wanted to start our vacation. When we got to the hotel we looked up what vehicle we shouldve gotten and just like we thought we were given the wrong vehicle. We made the best of it, we definitely didnt want to waste any of our vacation time exchanging out a vehicle.When we got back to the rental car lot we explained to them what had happened gave then back the keys to the other car and we were told that we would receive $100 credit. Asked for a letter of confirmation on that and was told by Panda that he would email us the confirmation. Next day still hadnt received anything so we gave them a call.Spoke with a man on the phone with no customer service what so ever and he basically told me that it was my problem that they do not give any sort of credit and hung up on me.I highly recommend that you DO NOT use this rental company even though they may be a couple dollars cheaper. The customer service there is horrible, the cars are beat up and run down. Our vehicle had over 70,000 miles and no shocks. All they care about is the dollar.

But it clearly was glued on. The owner said he would not charge me $400 for damages, and then went ahead and charged us the same day. He is a liar. This company makes all its money on hidden fees and scam moves like this. The two women at the counter were very rude. No care about customer service, they are probably family members of this scam company.
I will never get a rental car from this place ever again, the lady that checked me in was very rude the first car that they gave me kept cutting off, when I called to let the staff know they were very rude. When they gave me a new car it had a really big dent and the breaks made a squeaky noise the whole time as if the car needed new breaks. Do not rent through them you will be very disappointed. Also it says that the place is called A1 car rentals but when I booked I booked under Economy rent a car and I think that’s how they trick people so when you look up reviews it doesn’t come up under the exact name.

Warning, this is the same company as Economy rent-a-car. A truly awful place. It is unfortunate that most people end up renting from this company because they are the cheapest on Expedia, Hotwire, ect. because they will only see the poor reviews when it is too late. This company is terrible from start to finish. Their service is slow, you may wait 30 minutes just to get your car. The vehicle you do get will most likely come with 60K+ miles and be in terrible condition. The car we rented had a tire with a slow leak that we had to fill up multiple times before we finally brought it back to exchange for a new one. When you return your car they will say that everything is fine and will then charge you later that night for something they have no proof of. Businesses like this should not be able to operate. We dont allow restaurants to serve spoiled food, why do we allow other companies to provide terrible products and services without any repercussion?

Terrible car. Terrible Customer Service. I wish I had read the reviews of the place first. Look at Google Reviews or you can go to Trip Advisor and search for this place and you will see how terrible it is. My car was given to me dirty, light hanging from the inside of the trunk, the A/C was not working properly (it was just mostly cool - not cold), the Service Engine Now light was on, the check tire pressure light was on. The customer service was horrific. When I tried to tell the girl about these problems, she starting talking to someone else! Totally ignored me. I said, Im not done!. She told me - Sorry about your experience - then proceeded to talk to another customer. Even my kids told me - That lady didnt care at all. I would never, ever recommend this place, or rent from them again. Spend a few more dollars and rent from a trusted place.
HORRIBLE customer service. I wish I would have read the Reviews first. The car I booked on Booking.com was not the car I was given, they told me they never had that car I booked. These cars are old used cars that you rent.During the trip I wanted to extend my return time from 5:30pm to 6:30pm and they did for $30 for one of my cars. And my second car, when I asked to do the same thing later in the day, they guy said “you could pay $20 I guess”. Like what’s the standard rate? Don’t just shoot out a number (we asked for a copy of this agreement as well)When it was the end of my trip, I called to ask about $50 charge on my credit card after the woman who checked over the returned car rental said I was good to go and have a safe flight. On that call with Lee, I was criticized for using over 500miles—even though I PAID for unlimited miles. I was told the $50 charge was for a “dirty” car, yet I was told my car was great. They told me they took pictures of the car, but have yet to even email them to me when requested. And then he hung up on me because he was “over it” and would not pick up. I tired to call but he would not pick up. I called a office number on their FB to see if I can talk to someone in corporate— instead I got a man named Aku from Costa Rica from the sister rental company of this one who told me I should let it rest since they have had two suicides and a family death recently—that’s horrible but what does that have to do with Lee hanging up on me when I questioned why I was being charged after I left and was told everything is great?? UNPROFESSIONAL. I waited a few hours and called back and as soon as I said hello, he hung up AGAIN. I called back and he finally picked up the phone. I explained this to Lee, oh yes I’m pretty sure it was the same man and I questioned him about the charge be told. I even read over the only copy of the agreement they gave me through email— though they were suppose to send me a copy of EVERYTHING, they didn’t— and it did not state anything as what this guy did, The $50-$500 charge for “dirty cars”, was not listed. I have asked again for a copy of all of my signed documents. I also was aggressively told by lee about number 1,2,3 in the agreement. Number one stating no smoking— which we don’t smoke, it’s not in the agreement even if we did, and has no relevance to the $50 charge— number two stating to make sure you refuel your car and how it’s “common sense”— which we did and he stated we did—and then number 3 where the dirtiness of the car ranges from $5-$500 which it does not state. Instead of getting active help I got told to let it go and we should be “kind” because of the personal events. I’m being charged bogus charges that I simply and nicely inquired about. Lee made the mistake of mentioning the notes under our account from our two phone calls, I asked for a copy he said he would not give it to us, that it is for the workers to see, but felt it was alright to mention it to us as what an insult? Very UNPROFESSIONAL.Don’t use this company. They won’t help you. Luckily I am keeping record of the paperwork once they send it to me, I’ve talked to my VISA card about this, I have a recording of the phone calls with Mr. Lee, I am writing a review of this “company” on any and all travel sites so people know about these shysters, as well as writing a formal complaint to the BBB.
This place is not profissional at all!They charged me fee from cleaning the car after I already had taken the car to the car wash before I returned to them. The car was clean! I called them to talk about it and they hang out the phone in my face saying they won’t argue with me.This is ridiculous!I won’t never rent a car from there again!
Worst rental car agency I have ever used. They rented a shady car, the automatic windows didn’t work, the brakes were bad and they charged an additional cleaning fee for some sand upon auto return. When I called to explain the condition of the vehicle, I was sworn at and hung up on. It isn’t worth the money saved. You’ve been warned.

I called to dispute an additional charge on my credit card and they hung up on me. Tried to call back multiple times and no one answered. Make sure you dont have one grain of sand in your car or they will charge you a cleaning fee even if the car was dirty when you picked it up.
It might be good for long term rental with cheap price but you need to be ready to have a dirty, not maintained, old car. the window on driver seat side wasn’t roll up to the top, i needed to pull up to close sometimes. windshield wiper was so old and spreading water on the front glass, it was dangerous if i had poring rains. stinky sweat smells in the car and it didn’t look like clean or sanitized, i almost got nausea during driving by the smell from seats. the auto key wasn’t working so, i have to put the key into the door to open/close. even i put buckle up, still seat belt sign off is never disappeared. i called right away after leaving the office but the customer service was horrible answer and he hanged up phone after saying, “ just come back” i thought it’s good to encourage local business, but this is an out of question. i prefer paying double and get a normal car with safe, clean, new car.
Ugh. Customer service is horrible. I made a reservation through a third party site and when I called their office to verify the reservation was made, the guy cut me off and told me how next time make the reservation through them instead of a third party site. And how I was not supportive of a local business. (How was I supposed to know, I’m new to the island and mind you I was price shopping) I reserved until the 25th, which they were closed. So I dropped the car off and put the keys in the box. I called the next morning, to ask questions and make sure everything was processed correctly, AND AGAIN I GET CUT OFF. please save your time and money with this place. I will be keeping an eye on my credit card account since I keep reading about the extra charges. I regret not reading the reviews for this company.
