As some previous posters have mentioned:- Too crowded to be safe for covid (mask mandates are back)- Asked to cancel my membership after my year agreement, but they kept charging me!
I was a member of LVAC for about two years and had a great experience. The facility is absolutely gorgeous — spacious and clean. The rooftop pool is a unique perk. And considering the included access to all group classes, the price is super reasonable. I really enjoyed all of the group fitness instructors — BodyPump and ballet were particularly fun. The indoor pool is nice too, and usually empty.Importantly, I’ve always had great experiences with their member services. When life changes got in the way, they cancelled my membership no questions asked.
Peter is absolutely amazing. I’ve had the privilege of training with him for a few weeks now, and already seeing great initial results. His masterful skills and great energy produces an environment for total success. The gym is well kept and it’s clients are follow proper gym etiquette.
The quality of LVAC has fallen a long way. The hours are much shorter now - up to two hours of less open time per day. It’s unclear if the air conditioning has been turned on for the summer - if it’s on you certainly can’t tell. Even on the cooler days it’s much, much warmer inside. Machines have cobwebs, if that’s any sign of the cleaning regimen. It’s hard to say if it can continue to decline further.
Switched to LVAC from FFC and a bit disappointed. There is a serious lack of weights and equipment. Also, most of the equipment is old and dirty. Reminds me more of an LA Fitness/XSport but triple the price.
A gym that has it all. They have a decent range of workout equipment as well as 2 pools (one in the basement and one on the roof), a sauna, and a jacuzzi
The hours have not returned to pre-pandemic yet. Hoping that changes soon and will update my review
They close sooooo early. Also getting crowded
Great club with wonderful amenities. Very clean and, when not COVID-19 times, comfortable.
This is a very good gym, but unfortunately they have ripped me off.I froze my account at the start of the pandemic and just found out they have been charging me for months. When I tried to discuss this with them on the phone, they acted like it was my fault. Why is every gym so eager to rip you off?
I inquired about membership. Kasey (membership advisor) gave me a tour of the facility and answered all my questions.
Causing the drop in stars is due to their COVID response. They allowed you to freeze your membership and said your days you missed from March would be credited to your account - they NEVER said that your membership freeze would be in place AFTER your already paid for days ran out once gyms opened on 7/27. Poor communication and unprofessional - i will be looking for new gyms to go to.In normal times, there is not any better gym in the city for the price, but really upset with their handling of customer billing during this time.
It seems the employees here would prefer that the gym would still be on lockdown so the could be collecting enhanced unemployment. The service was terrible after the re-opening. Either the employees are not trained properly on how to interact with customers, in which case their managers should be fired or they arent following the training and policies in which case they should be fired. Ill be finding another gym.
Good clean facility
I was a member here when I lived in Chicago and after moving and joining other gyms, I cannot say enough good things about this gym. No other gym Ive been to stands up to LVAC. Incredibly clean, well kept, excellent spa-like locker rooms, and the teachers and trainers were amazing, specifically one man who taught Body Pump! He put together the best playlist and always brought his energy and excitement and I miss his class! Highly recommend this gym.
FRONT DESK NEEDS TO BE TRAINED ON BEING POLITE AND RESPECTFUL!!!!After my workout in the evening, I did not look at my phone in the shower, and wasn’t aware of how long I had spent. After someone yelled inside, to tell me they had closed, I apologized, promptly got out and began to change quickly to leave. Then a man who had the WORST attitude, came in to do a last check and told me to hurry up?! AS IF I WASN’T ALREADY DOING THAT! Before I got to the front desk, I looked at the clock and saw that I was 10 minutes past close!! When I got to the front desk, he basically tried to lecture me on my way out of the door. Claiming that I had been told to they closed 3 times, which I certainly did not hear, and then he attempted to scold me?? And I apologized AGAIN, trying to tell him I hadn’t checked my my phone during my shower, he very RUDELY cut me off and continued to lecture! I was five seconds from going off, but decided to shut him up and told him it wouldn’t happen again and swiftly left.I understand him wanting to leave, but how hard would it have been to say something as simple as “just a reminder for the future, we hard close at____ time”?! Such a simple and NICE way to get a point across. It was extremely aggravating, because now I don’t even want to go back to that location. That guy needs MANNERS.
I go here for the pool. Most affordable pool in Lakeview/Lincoln Park. They recently purchased new lane lines and new water fountain with improved water bottle fill station. The pool is in excellent shape. Great tile work in the entire pool area including an excellent hot tub.
This is a fine gym for the money. It is generally clean, not usually too crowded and the equipment is in decent condition. The reason for giving two stars is for lack of transparency on how cancellation works for membership. PLEASE READ: You are required to give a 30 day written notice of your cancellation and you will be responsible for any payments that fall within that 30 day window, even if you are no longer able to use the club. I accept some responsibility for not closely reading the fine print, but it still feels a little deceitful.
JUST ANOTHER SCAM. Was a loyal member for over 2 years and never paid my dues late. Moved away and gave them 15 days notice while on month to month and they wont let me out of my agreement. Terrible customer service.
Lots of great classes to get back in shape and tone muscles. I love body attack class especially. So much fun.
Pros: I worked out here for 2 years. It’s a well taken care of facility with all the amenities. It has all the basic weightlifting equipment needed to train all the major muscle groups. If you want a more exclusive club feel, this is your place.Cons: I like places filled with people who are way more muscular than me... this was not that place (and only I’m a casual lifter). Also, it’s a little pricey for a place that’s not open 24/7 and without childcare services.
Its a solid B+, realistically. That is, however, the best available in the area.I would say theres a kind of more put together vibe. I cant wear certain sweatpants there. Definite gay vibe in the locker room/everywhere. Sometimes you just want to be grungy at the gym. Can be weird as a gay person to have like all this constant late twenties muscle power bottom lingering eye contact-ation going on all the time.Great discounts for various types--check and see if you apply.
Not sure why it took me this long to considering cancelling my membership. This gym provides less amenities and costs 2x as much as a gym 2 blocks away. However, I would recommend if you want a gym that locks their doors well before the posted closing and notifies members only 24 hours in advance when a private event closes the whole place down.
I have been a member at lvac for 3 years now and dont regret it one bit! their facilities are consistently clean and well kept. also, they are consistently upgrading their equipment and have a pool and climbing wall available for member use! also, the summer rooftop pool is fantastic! great gym, i would recommend to all! also, they have a great couples and student discount, be sure to ask!
I was weary going to the gym post covid but they have done everything in their power to try to make it as safe as possible. All the members seem to be following all the instructions.
Very friendly staff with a clean facility. Have been apart of this gym for about 3 months and wouldn’t recommend any other gym. Would prefer the men’s bathroom to be a little cleaner.
I enjoyed this gym, it’s well appointed. But I wish leaving was just as pleasant. Offered a new job out of town and required to move within 2 weeks. Gym won’t let me cancel until October (it’s August) thus requiring me to pay additional months. They also pick and choose what parts of your contract are valid after 12 months and which are not. Corrupt business plan. This is an exact excerpt from Hallie, oneof their managers stating the terms and conditions on my contract are no longer valid,“Thank you for your email. Your membership is no longer in a contract period as of September of 2017. Section #18 is applicable if you are within a commitment period. You have the ability to cancel at any time with the 30-day written notice by either sending in a cancel email, or in club with an advisor. There is no need to provide the proof of relocation and pay the cancellation fees since your membership has renewed over to a monthly membership.”What a load of idiocracy. I wouldn’t recommend joining unless you can definitively plan when you are leaving.
Great hot tub awesome staff really friendly and also very clean and sanitized which I like I want to a lot of other athletic clubs and really can’t make ends meet besides this one is the only place that is my go to from now on
This place rocks! Open 7 days a week, the facility is always clean, the cardio machines are in great working condition and there is rarely a wait for weights or other equipment. The spinning class is one of the most popular classes and the boxing for beginners is pretty fun. The hidden gem of LAC is the rooftop pool! They could use a few more loungers on the roof but its perfect for people without a pool in their building.
Great gym. Excellent studio spaces and weight room. Everything from the locker rooms to the yoga studios are clean and beautiful. The yoga and Pilates classes are also wonderful. The teachers are very talented and work hard to motivate and encourage students.
I was member here for a few months with the student discount (excellent deal). WONDERFUL GYM. Very clean, and like others have said, has everything you need (esp. many wonderful classes).
LVAC is the best gym Ive belonged to so far. Unlike many other fitness facilities, the staff are friendly, efficient, and very helpful--the front desk always sends someone to help when I need to hang a heavy boxing bag. The facilities are well-maintained and have just about everything you could ask for. And overall, I have found the gym goers to be considerate, friendly, and good to be around.
While I have enjoyed the classes and staff, Chicago Athletics Clubs have an extremely misleading term of agreement for month-to-month members. Not presented up front, but hidden in the contract is the terms stating that you have to give them a 30-Day notice of cancellation from their program. This effectively forces you to pay for an extra month of service even though you are on a so-called month-to-month program. This happening despite the fact that it costs extra to have a month-to-month membership, with basically no difference between it and a normal one. Also, during the time we were members at the Club, they completely devalued their point system by eliminating it entirely. All incentives that had been earned by going to the Club were lost. While technically not violating any of their terms or policies that you have to sign, they are misleading in the naming and pricing of their memberships. They should have a more ethical approach to business and be up-front about any potential fees and cancellation requirements.
Terrible customer service. Will nickel and dime you when you try to cancel your membership as others have pointed out. Overcrowded facility. They recently Completely Revamped the gym but everything looks the exact same as before. $65+ a month is pricey for how they treat you.
Ive been a member of a few gyms and can honestly say this is the nicest gym Ive been part of for the cost.-The staff is super nice and upbeat-The towel service is great-The steam room is nice, albeit a bit small-The locker rooms are clean and well kept-I never have trouble finding cardio equipment I want to use-The weight machine area is well equipped (I dont really use free wights)-Theres a wide array of classes with fun/enthusiastic teachersI will admit I get a decent discount through my company and my wife and I are both members so it is about $70 a month a person. If it was $115 a person I might feel differently. In general though I like this better than the previous memberships Ive had to places like 24 Hour Fitness.
The gym, staff, locker rooms, and classes are all fantastic and top notch. My issue with the club has been canceling my membership after moving out of state. CAC contracts with ABC financial, a notoriously ruthless financial services company. So far, I have sent them letters addressed to my new address in Florida as well as a copy of my new job acceptance letter, yet they still refuse to cancel my membership. If you are not 100% certain that you will be using the gym for 12 months I strongly advise signing a month to month agreement to avoid my current nightmare.
One of the better climbing walls in the city. Cannot say much about the rest of the gym since I only climb there. You dont need to bring a lock to use the locker rooms which is nice. Climbing staff is friendly.
This gym was well renovated. Its so clean and new- not what youd expect from aGym. They have a ton of equipment and machines and even a number of ones that Ive never seen before elsewhere.
Great gym overall, clean, nice equipment. The cardio classes are great! Franks spin class is not to be missed! The only thing keeping it from five stars is the parking situation, which is down the street and $5...
Ive been going here since it opened. Its the best! The classes, which are free, are taught by superstar trainers that keep you going back.
Love it - staff, zumba, dancing classes. Clean tidy. Of course could be cheaper :)
It is nice to have a local fitness place walking distance since I dont care to walk far these days
Do not touch these people with a barge pole, they make it easy to join but impossible to cancel, they just keep charging your credit card and it doesnt matter if you go into the club or send them messages, or make calls, they refuse to accept the cancellation. It boarders on the fraudulent. The club looks nice but the customer service stinks.
This gym just did not seem to me to be worth the price tag. Other gyms that cost half the price seem to be just as good, if not better. It has a rock climbing wall, and towel service, but other than that it does not have anything else that I would say it does better or has, that other gyms dont.I was considering cancelling the membership for those reasons for quite some time, but what sealed the deal for me was when I showed up one evening and they had a sign on the door that there was a private event, and that the gym was otherwise closed. When I went inside to ask about what was going on, and how I could have known prior instead of making the trip to get there, I felt like I was treated poorly. One gentleman started yelling at me that I couldnt go in, and a lady stopped me in the doorway as if I was a criminal or something. I suppose that they can do whatever they want with their business, at the end of the day, and I can choose to be a member or not. However, to me it was odd to think that a membership establishment would choose to close to its members but stay open for other reasons. Im sure they signed up a bunch of new members at the event though, so win for them!
Everything that you could possibly want in a gym is here in one convenient location! There are the standard free weights, machines, treadmills, ellipticals plus, they have pools, an awesome climbing and bouldering wall, plus a wide range of classes all included in the monthly membership. You could really spend a lot of time at this gym just doing a variety of things and getting into shape. The gym is really clean, the staff do a great job of ensuring that fresh towels are always available. Because of the size of the gym, even when its crowded, you never feel like you have to wait to get on a machine or use a free weight. Its close proximity to the lakefront also gives one the option of going for a run by the lake, when the weather is nice, and then heading back inside for a workout on the weights. One thing I really appreciate about the membership structure is that you dont have to commit to a year long membership, you can go month to month and even if you are on an annual membership, you can freeze it and reactivate it later. Awesome flexibility!
Pros:Eye Candy (mostly gay crowd in this gymFacilities: clean, modernService: great customer service from employeesCons:Not open 24 hoursA bit pricey for what you getEye candy: so many chiseled bodies might leave you a bit self conscious after the deep dish pizza you ate after partying late in boystown and not finding who to hook up with :/ lolDefinitely not the best gym in the world, but definitely the best in the neighborhood
Terrible customer service as a company. Beware - they will close locations, give members a 7hr notice then expect you to continue payments.
Great experience at CAC. Unfortunately I had to cancel my membership due to moving out of state. Hallie made this process so painless and I am grateful for the good service I have received at CAC.
Absolutely love working out here, front desk staff is very friendly, membership advisors are helpful, not pushy at all. other members are friendly as well. all the trainers are great, they do a great job catering to what you need and what you are looking for from your training session.
The facility is top-notch. The staff are attentive and extremely patient. Nice work, people!
This gym is THE PERFECT GYMIt is very clean, and I really mean it! You can tell the cleanliness of a gym by its locker rooms and the floors of the showering area, and LVAC has that! The staff are very friendly and helpful. It has all the machines you will need, all you got to do is apply for a guest past and see what this gym is! thats what convinced me.
The showers are the best, it has two heads and you feel like you are at a spa. love this gym a bit pricey but worth the price, the staff is very friendly. I usually take a couple of classes during the week. like the Thursday maximum force kickboxing class with Paul, I lose like three pounds every time I take the class. I also take the CRX class to help me with my abs and TRX for an overall body body workout. they staff also really encourages you to keep fit and help you keep motivated. Thursday you get free access to all the gyms.
Fantastic coaching!! Great classes. All the amenities
Great addition to the Lakeview neighborhood. Gym facilities are in great condition, and include an indoor climbing wall, small rooftop pool, plus 4 levels of fitness facilities. Even in the posy holiday season, you can typically find equipment of your choice. Only negative for me, is this CAC location closed their kids club so I find myself visiting LPAC location more often.
The club is beautiful and spacious, and there are tons of classes! I wish more was going on in non-work-hours, but... Ive been to several of the CAC locations and LVAC is definitely the nicest Ive seen.
Amazing place I ve been to many gym facilities before here is great besides the fact is always clean, many classes to go to, here no one bothers u no personal trainers hustling u and trying to convince u to get one as well its just peaceful place to work out n enjoy !!!
Very nice, until you have an issue. They will not call you back unless you email and call. I have refered 4 people to join this gym over the years and I regret it. Very expensive, the gym across the street is half the price.
Although it is highly expensive, it is a very nice club and worth the money. Amenities include a climbing wall and a pool. If you work for a non-profit, you get a membership break.
Very nice center inside and out. for working out and relaxing...
LVAC is one of the better gyms Ive been to. The staff is very helpful and the facilites are in good shape. All types of classes are available for all types of workouts, including live DJ Spin! Join LVAC! You wont regret it.
Really nice and clean club
Nice gym, well equiped and maintenanced. Kind of wish they r 24 hours or at least open till a bit later 😅
Its such a nice facility and the staff are great as well.
Favorite gym in Chicago. Plenty of room, great trainers and everything is very clean.
Clean, spacious, and affordable gym. Crowded during prime time, so get there early or late.
Very nice gym for the price. Two pools (one outdoor, one indoor).
The facilities are clean and the people working are also friendly. The only complaint was not being able to transfer facilities without additional costs, even after being members for many years.
I rave to all my friends and family about this gym. It has literally everything, its never too full, the classes are some of the best Ive ever been to. Ill cry when I leave Chicago.
I never been there. I was wonderin how much it cost to join?
Awesome outdoor rooftop pool
This is a great gym!
Very clean and convenient!
Good for climbers
I love this place
I like it
