I took my 4yo daughter here for a basic haircut. They advertise kids cuts, but be warned that it is only for boys. As soon as we walked in, Jenny said “no, I won’t do this,” which made my already nervous preschooler even more so. I said it was just a basic cut, and she did a straight trim across the back but refused to wash it or do anything to the front of her hair. She also seemed to have no experience working with kids. I could have done a better job myself. Also, one of the male staff was walking around without a mask. Will not return.

Best haircut Ive had in years AND one of the least expensive. And I love that its a very unpretentious place (but still nice and clean). Its even got a little play area to help keep kids occupied. I dont have kids so I cant vouch for how effective it is, though!

Had a great hair and beard cut by Kevin! Great value, and an outstanding cut. True barber skills with good fade and straight razor work.Only item of note was that I used the online reservation system, and it was not being used in the shop. Definitely walk-in, first come; first served style. Worked out the same time wise this time.However the cut and service more than make up for any technology issues.

Best value in DC worth the drive every time

I cant say much about the haircut, since I didnt get one. The customer who was getting their hair done seemed familiar with the stylist and overall happy with how it was going.Im looking for a barber since Im new to the area. Found the shop on Google Maps and figured Id give it a shot. Website didnt have the ability to make an appointment, but had an email form for requesting a quote. I listed that I wanted to get my haircut at 10, right when they open. They response said just to walk in.I did just that (walked in bang on at 10:03) and there was already a customer. I sat for 35 minutes before I got up and left. The stylist told me she was almost done, but I had to go pick up my partner at the airport (the haircut was meant to be a surprise for her).All said, the shop seemed fine, well-kept and family friendly, but I wish the system or lack thereof, for reservations had been clearer.

They were nice and accommodating when I called for a same day appointment. However, I did not favor the female barber not wanting to cut my hair as low as I requested because of her own expressed feminine aesthetic beliefs. She also did not fade my hair for the same reasons. If a customer is paying, such requested service(s) should be done. Now if the barber cannot do such techniques, thats another story. Overall, a basic cut that sufficed for the time being.

I’m always greeted with a smile and walk out with the best cuts. Fantastic value!

The 1st Street barber shop gives a wonderful men’s haircut at a great price ($25 in July 2021). Their staff is friendly, skilled, fast, and attentive, and the neck shave and hot towel at the end make a haircut here a really nice experience.

Big shout out to Gina! I’m queer and finding a barber/ barbershop that i feel comfortable returning to is hard to find. I went to Gina based on a friend’s recommendation and I am very happy with her. The skin tight fade is on point every time. Their cleaning practices during these covid times are pretty great too.

Set me back 3 + months.Did not follow my instructions on not cutting certain areas of my hair I am trying to grow out. Other aspects of the cut were good, but this is unforgivable.I will have to go to my old barber, which is a 30 minute drive, to fix the styling for the shorter hair.I won’t be going back unless I really need my hair cut and I live 2 blocks a way.

First time I go there. Definitely not the last. Kevin is very professional and precise. It took him only a few seconds to get what i want and he exactly did it. He is so accurate that sometimes i felt like an engineer is cutting my hair. Also a very reasonable price.

Solid local spot with good customer service. They take their time with the cut and will do a good job if you can provide a picture of what you are looking for.

The place is clean and organized. There is a child-friendly vibe, which fits the neighborhood. I usually drive across town to a different barber, but thought to try this place since it is local and I wanted it to be my new local barber. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with the haircut. The barber didnt follow my requests and then gaslighted me when I told him that the cut was not right. My hair was uneven, long in places and short in others, and the technique was off (a whole lot of random and disorganized cutting going on). If you want your hair to be even and cut consistently to achieve a professional look, I recommend going elsewhere. I have been to a lot of excellent and mediocre barbershops in my life and this cut was one of the worst I have received. Usually I would stay patient and try to get it corrected, but when I asked for it shorter, he stopped the cut! so I will be going back to my usual barber tomorrow to get this mistake fixed. By far the best haircut I have received!

Ive been coming here consistently for the last six months and have always had good experiences. However on a recent trip, one of the barbers was blantantly talking about me right in front of me and refused to acknowledge it. It was a very strange and uncomfortable experience that unfortunately tarnished the shop for me.

Ive been holding off getting a haircut for a while from straight fear of switching barbers but Kevin at 1st street haircut did a great job. He took his time and made sure the symmetry was perfect. Hot towel and straight razor for the neck. Will definitely come back and the price is reasonable so I wont have to wait 3 months in between to get a haircut.

I just moved to DC and have been here a little over a week but its that time of the month where I need to get a haircut. I have Asian boy hair so when it gets long, no amount of hair product will keep my hair in place.I did some searching and this was about a 10 min car ride from my apartment. It was incredibly clean and the woman who cut my hair did a great job. She was so warm and attentive. This was the most detailed haircut experience Ive ever had. The person who cut my hair a month ago didnt do a good job but the hairdresser here fixed it! I may have just found a new place to get my monthly haircut. =)

Amazing place and service!

Writing this review from the Barbers chair as she is telling me to go to another place. Absolutely bizarre!!! Gave me a haircut completely different then what I asked, I even showed a picture of what I wanted before we started. Now, with an incomplete haircut she is saying she can’t do that and I need to go somewhere else. Awful service. Gina was very rude, disrespectful and dismissive about the situation as well. Wouldn’t recommend to my enemies.

Very clean. I took my three year old grandson and was very pleased. The gentleman engaged my grandson and when I asked him to trim his hair a little shorter the barber agreed immediately and recut the hair he had cut already. The racecar chair and the cartoon on the TV kept my grandson interested and cooperative. I will definitely take him back for his next haircut.

I was initially nervous about getting a haircut from a non-Black barber since our hair is so different, but I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome of the haircut and the care that was taken during the haircut. Even better, this barbershop is open on Sundays, which is not easy to come across in a lot of Black communities. I plan to come to this barbershop regularly, and I highly recommend it for others, especially for Black people.
