This is one of our favorite places to stay when visiting SF. There’s a restaurant next door that just started reopening after being closed because of Covid-19. This time we got a nice room, however there were heavy stains of silicone lube on the bathroom room. We communicated this to the front desk, showed them the picture and told us to go back to the room and housekeeping will be there to clean that up. Housekeeping manager showed up and offered to switch rooms. Thank you so much to the front staff for offering another room…. NOT! Housekeeping manager and team: you did the right thing switching us to another clean room. We really appreciated it.
Clean, courteous, service was good, the rooms are cute, well appointed. Fluffy clean beds. Snacks available, and Mels kitchen down stairs a definite plus. We will return.
Service is great. Lobby is beautifully decorated with some spaces to work, which would be great for business travelers. The rooms are just small, especially compared to other Marriott properties around the city. And they don’t really look like the photos… You’ve got a bed, a TV, a nicely renovated shower, a desk, no view from the room… that’s about it. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to someone wanting to spend a lot of time in the room but if you are just coming back to sleep or staying for the specific location, it works. It’s also on the edge of the tenderloin district so just be careful walking around in that district at night if you are alone. That being said, location is great as there are some amazing restaurants nearby (Maison Daniel, Ben Thai) and you can walk to Japantown as well!
The only thing I liked about this Marriott was the decor. Staff were not terribly helpful. One towel, one washcloth provided for 2 guests. Bed was pretty soft…too soft for our liking. We ordered breakfast from DoorDash, and because the hotel does not allow dashers to come to your room, there is a table where they are to leave orders, and someone swiped it in the three minutes it took us to go down and get it. I would suggest they move the table where staff can see it, to act as a deterrent to this happening…OR allow dashers to deliver to rooms. You need to either be let in to the hotel to enter the building or use your room key, so why not? When waiting for our second order, I observed unmasked guests interacting with the staff, and they were not reminded that masks are required for ALL guests. The shower water pressure was poor and the stall was tiny - 24” wide. Won’t be back.
We have stayed at several hotels in San Francisco because we have to go every 3 months to California Pacific Medical Center. We have never enjoyed our stay like we did recently at your hotel. We will continue to book our stay at your hotel. Your staff was very helpful and the room was amazing. See you again soon.
We got a King room and it was very small. The worst part of our trip was the parking situation, it is a nightmare, if you can, request a spot in the upper lot. Lower lot is limited in size and spaces, was worried about our car getting hit the whole time. Elevator seemed to be having some issues when we were there as well. Door not opening completely and at one point fully wasnt working. Staff is very friendly however and it is in a great location.
Love love love this hotel. The room has been so nice, the staff is great, and the hotel is just beautiful. I like the gym, free laundry, and have been quite a regular fan of the diner nextdoor.
Positive: We enjoyed the hotel cleanliness and how quiet it was. The room was great for our family of five. Negative: Parking was horrible. We were told we would keep a certain handicap spot and it was never avaible. One night had to park in an unmarked spot.
I love staying at this place. Obviously it has a great location and nice rooms, but more so because of how I get treated. They have great staff that go far and beyond. Especially Maria and Rosie, cant thank them enough!
A great design, rooms are large enough but the bathroom is really tiny with not many places to hang towels. And the worst part is the extremely tiny coffee maker that doesnt have a plug where it sits in the closet. The staff is nice. The gym is very dark but has enough to do the basics. No coffee here but the hotel has a direct access to Mel, a small coffee shop.
Paid for an extra large King room, got a very Tiny room with a king bed! I should have paid for the regular king room!! At least we had a window. Perhaps that is what you pay extra for? The room was very clean. The Wi-Fi didnt work! 🤷
No smoking rooms. No drinking water provided in the rooms. No restaurant. Its just a lodge. No breakfast or food. Staff are friendly and helpful. But surprisingly Marriott standards are not there
Nice hotel but Parking is reserved. Have to park at 1000 van ness garage.
Booked online with a VISA debit card that has a chip. They don’t have a chip reader on their credit card machine. So 5 hrs away from home while my family member was in the hospital they refuse service because the strip wouldn’t read on it however I had another card with my name and ID but they wouldn’t accept it because it didn’t have a chip. Again they have no chip reader!!!!! When asked to enter it manually or pay cash they refused. Front desk lady was rude, manager at first told us yes we could use the card then said no seconds later.
This is one of the best hotels that we have stayed in while visiting the city. The staff is friendly and the rooms are well kept. The hotel is near many tourist spots. The parking lot is great and its gated. We didnt have to worry about someone breaking into our car. They have plenty of security cameras. Thats a huge plus in our book.
Staff was super friendly ad the hotel was perfect! Very European with the room size but it was perfect for us, loved the decor!
The Marriott mistreated me. When I arrived the clerk would not let me inside. I told him I have a reservation and when I gave him my name he said I could not check in until 03/29 so I said it is 03/29 and he responded we do not accept guest until noon. I said well do you have any room available an he said no. I was left standing outside in the cold. He could have at least treated me like a welcomed guest an let me come inside. He could have offered me another solution. I am not satisfied. I am very disappointed in my service.
Hands down the nicest interior of a Courtyard branded hotel I’ve ever stayed in. I do think it’s about time for a mattress upgrade though.
Positive: Its beautiful. The food in the restaurant was wonderful as well. Negative: no
Stepping through the doors is a huge relief from the noise and stress of the city. Very accomodating staff, comfortable rooms with excellent showers. Calm, comfortable, and secure. Will stay here again.
If you stay there ask for Maria Zburlea, very professional and nice
Nice hotel. GREAT Staff. Rooms are comfy, but for some reason they put auto-closers on bath and/or closet doors in the rooms, so if youre trying to put stuff in the closet, or you want to put on makeup in the bathroom, the door keeps slamming shut on you! Aside from that, no complaints. Beds are heavenly.
They served great food for your breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Their lobby is clean, the security system is good as well. Also, the room was spacious and very clean. We enjoyed our stay here. Everyone was kind who let you feel like you’re at home and help you with everything. Well be back again. I would highly recommend this cozy place to all my friends.
Positive: I liked the gated parking at the hotel and the cleanliness. Negative: I did not like that my check out time was 11am and the house cleaning was knocking on my door at 10am to leave the room. Parking is also $40 extra per night and there is no microwave in the room only one in the lobby.
Great hotel! I would say you get your money’s worth here, with plenty to do on-site, and lots of restaurants and entertainment within walking distance. There was a great selection of food, drinks, and activities for the whole family. I would definitely recommend staying here if you don’t mind paying a little extra. The best among the rest!
Great place to go lounge at to use their wifi! 😁
Definitely not worth the stay. Rooms are too small, parking is over priced, no housekeeping service, no microwave in the rooms, the only thing I enjoyed was the decor and the cleanliness.
The only reason Im not giving 5 stars is the double rooms are a little tight & theres no microwave in the room. The staff is kind & helpful. The location is nice, the hotel is well kept and clean. I loved the feeling of a classic SF hotel with modern amenities!
Rooms are small and outdated. Not worth the money
Very nice hotel, however rooms are very small and parking is very overpriced.
I saw a review saying this place was small and it truly is. Extremely small and overpriced. All amenities are in the closet. Like what?
The stay was good. However the front desk person was unprofessional. Im am waiting for the GM to still call me to explain some questions i have on my credit card.
Unfortunately the mattress is more than just done.
I stayed at this hotel to prepare for my mother’s surgery across the street at Sutter Hospital. Front Desk reception “Rosie” was outstanding and kind given my mother’s condition.Hotel was clean and room was spacious with nice decor. Guest services were accommodating and gracious. There is a 24 hour market downstairs in the lobby and lots of room to sit in safe distance due to Covid.Parking was easy and safe. Rates were extremely reasonable for SF.I stay in SF a lot for conferences and shows (pre-Covid). This is a hotel that I would definitely return to and recommend. There were many safety features for area and Covid compliance.
Very pretty very clean and the rooms are very big
Lets just stay slept like a baby. Very very clean facility and rooms. I will stay here again. Management keep up the good work. Your staff is very helpful pat them on the back for me.
We have been loyal to the Marriott and Courtyard by Marriott brand for decades, enjoying properties throughout the United States. We love historic architecture and this unique Courtyard in a centralized location in San Francisco exceeded our expectations on our multiple stays. The lobby and hallways are charming, the rooms have wonderful historic elements and a comfortable and convenient window seat and large windows, and are very quiet. Having Mels downstairs is a total plus as its a full service restaurant for dine in or to go. We do both! And the service at the hotel is friendly, professional and very helpful! 5 stars! The hotel is close to great restaurants, Union Square and much more. We will be back soon!
Perfect if you need to go to CPMC Van Ness.
Fun place to stay. You have to manage your expectations this building is over a hundred years old and the room size is representative of the timeframe so if you need a big room to be happy, request it. The hotel looks great and the rooms are well appointed. The location is excellent and close to so many things. I like to walk, and though you need to be aware with the homeless that is pretty consistent with all major cities, so it is very walking friendly. If you want to try something different and relish how things were decades ago this is a great way to see the older architecture with a face lift and be close to so many SF sights and eateries you should give this a try it is a nice break from the cookie cutter hotels we are so accustomed to!
We checked in to be near CPMC hospital. My daughter made reservations for 2 rooms for a week. We got there first and my wife showed them our visa card so we could check-in, with the understanding that NO charges would be applied to it. The next day we had a $1600 hold on our account and no funds available. That took us over a day to fix. When we checked out our card was charged $1400, which put it in overdrawn status, and her card was charged 0. This took multiple calls and 5 days to fix. We were not impressed with anything about our stay. There is a Holiday Inn 2 blocks away, we will be staying there next time we need an extended stay near CPMC. We expected more from a Courtyard Marriott and as Marriott Bonvoy members were totally disappointed with the experience.
I stayed in this hotel for two days. The first day was fine, but the second day some man entered our hotel room at 3:45am and then abruptly said sorry when he saw we were in there. I called the front desk and they said they would address the issue in the morning. The next morning at checkout I brought it up and they said sorry. I understand that mistakes happen, but we did not have a pleasant experience. Having someone enter the room at 3:45am and disturb us like that was awful considering we both had work the next day.I had to email them for a follow-up to let them know and they offered us 2,000 points. That is insultingly low ($10 value).
My family and I loved our stay here so much we didnt want to leave... the staff were so welcoming and friendly. The beds were like sleeping on a cloud, room was immaculate. Our stay here was perfect in fact it was so perfect that when my family and I revisit SF we will be staying here and only here from now on.
The inside is very clean The outside could use some more attention. Staff was very attentive. Hotel security is fairly locked down. Room water pressure in the shower is lacking. But adequate as long as no one is flushing the toilet and alternate room.
This Courtyard is quite nicer compared to other Courtyards. This hotel looks like to was completely redone on the inside with a nice looking lobby, modern rooms, but keeping some of the old vibe. The price was on average with other hotels in San Francisco.Location is decent, the hotel is walking distance to some sights, about a 1km wall to the civic center BART station (although the surrounding area can be rough).Overall it’s a decent place to stay in, I enjoyed staying here for a 3 night business trip.
Positive: the room was nice. Negative: the manager was very rude . not willing to accommodate us for parking. said we couldnt book a room even though we paid our stay in advance. suggested we parked 2 blocks away from the room because employees were parked inside. will never stay here again.
Very nice and personal service is great 👍 👌 👏 😀
This one of the newest Marriotts in San Francisco; a total remodel of the old Hotel Opal. They really did a great job restoring the property both in side and out.....the lobby and downstairs lounge areas are particularly appealing. My only minor critique is that in our guest room, a large screen television was placed directly in front of an even larger piece of colorful art work. Only the borders of the art could be seen. Also, a glass shelf was placed in between the bottom of the bathroom mirror and the sink; making shaving and washing your face a bit tricky. The possibility of bumping your head or face on the shelf it real. Other than that, we loved staying here. Its in a great location whether you are going up to the Castro, over to Fishermans Wharf, down to Union Square or over to Japantown. Its a very old hotel, so the rooms are a bit small, but we were only there to sleep and shower. I will definitely stay here again.

Beautiful Hotel! Awesome experience!!
Nice hotel but unfortunately we were unable to enjoy the hotel amenities due to COVID19 restrictions. Walk to the Wharf is about 30 minutes is you like a little exercise and public transit is at the front door. Warning that local homelessness is high HOWEVER, no impact to the safety and security the hotel offers. Rooms are cozy and adequately priced.
This place was very nice. Only thing was the manager on board: very rude and unaccomidating! She was heavy set snotty and mean spirited.. I had to video tape her behavior throughout the whole time my party had the unfortunate experience dealing with this unprofessional slob of a woman. The only nice people where the bell hop and the kind English woman who helped me on our last day.. if and when I return (I visit SF frequently) I hope I dont run into her or her assistant.
Absolutely loved this hotel. Its an old/historic hotel that was completely renovated and rebranded as a Courtyard. Most rooms are set back off the main hallway, giving you privacy and quiet. Yes, there are homeless in the immediate area, but thats a function of San Fran in general. Ill be staying here everytime I visit San Fran for business. Unless of course they raise the rate.
Rooms are comfy and you have a great staff, thank you!
The place is clean and easy to navigate. The staff that checked me in was incredibly friendly and very helpful. She didnt even bat an eye at my request for a late check out. My only criticism is that I wish we would have been notified that VanNess street was going through epic construction. It would not have changed my decision to stay there, I just believe that as a repeat guest, BonVoy member, etc. that we should be notified. Otherwise staff were terrific.
Nice hotel with quirky decor. Room was small and bathroom even smaller! Bathroom smelt very strongly of weed coming through the vent from the next room! Area is near to Union square but not the nicest neighbourhood. The hotel has a great lobby but sadly no bar! Mel’s kitchen next door is good for food and drinks.
Upon arrival to departure, the receptionists were the sweetest!! They were so kind and helpful and it just meant so much to us. Thank you Rosie & Maria!!! We also, LOVED our room! Very spacious, beds were extremely comfortable, room was very clean, bathroom was very nice and shower has great water pressure & hot water, room was very nicely decorated AND the bonus: the tv connects to Netflix & YouTube!! The hotel is very nice and newly renovated. I must say, although Covid has made things extremely difficult, this was a very nice highlight that we very much needed and are extremely grateful for. I highly recommend this hotel and look forward to staying here again soon!!!
The ladies that work there are super nice and very easy to talk to
Great location across from CPMC. very clean and quiet. old hotel with modern interiors
Was nice from the outside, but we went in to be greeted with the fact that our reservation was cancelled. They didnt notify us, and all they said was that they werent accepting friends and family discount at this time. Irritating that they didnt tell us about the cancellation because it left us without a place to stay, and we had to pay extra for a different hotel.
This was my second time at this hotel. I love it. Nice and fully equipped rooms. Great price/quality considering that we are in San Francisco area. The diner at the corner is perfect for morning breakfast and weekend brunch
Amazing hotel nestled in on Van Ness Ave - near city hall, down town and close to Nob and Russian Hills. Elegantly decorated with a top notch staff and quaint rooms that have everything you need. I honestly felt like I was staying at high end boutique. You wont be disappointed by the hotel or the staff.
I would not recommend this hotel. There is no room service and no restaurant. They gave me a list of “walk to restaurants”, included one that was a 35 min walk! After a long day of meetings, no thanks. Also, my room smelled like old man. Eesh. Can you please air out the rooms?
Originally booked at the Opal, which was the old hotel but they renovated it and turned it into a courtyard by marriott. The hotel is beautifully renovated, the decor is awesome, the rooms are very nice and the beds are soft and clean. No complaints about our stay. Yes the hotel is in tenderloin which is filled with homeless people but its right on the cusp and is centrally located so our 3 adults and 2 kids group felt safe even after sundown. Overall, the price we had cannot be beat and it was the cheapest around so the hotel was an awesome surprise!
The hotel is ok but overpriced for what little services and amenities there are. The walls are thin, so you can not only hear people next door, but hear the toilet flush and drain through the pipes too. Also parking is a $40 hidden fee they don’t tell you about until your inside. Unfortunately the hotel is located in a rough part of town. Lots of homeless and druggies outside. Other than that, the hotel itself is nice.
Beautiful lobby and room but the location doesnt have much in terms of amenities (food, drinks, markets)
The hotel was very lovely and the service was great. The front desk made checking in quick and easy. Parking I was not to pleased with because of all the construction around it was hard to figure out where I could park my car or how to get my car to the vallet person. The room was a bit small, the same type of room at the courtyard down the way are larger for only a few dollars more. Overall I had a good time at the hotel.
We arrived very late at night (2am) and from the start, the front desk manager (Eddison) went above and beyond to make us comfortable and happy! He gave us a late check out and allocated us a lovely room, the stay was just perfect. Location was great as well! Would definitely recommend to others and will be back!
The hotel needs to update their website to denote that their restaurant is closed. Also, you have to wait for someone to open the parking garage for you so you can park to check in. Security is strong and you need to have a room key to get anywhere. The market in the lobby could use some choices other than candy, ice cream and potato chips.
Small rooms, over priced, expensive parking fees, in a sketchy part of downtown san francisco
Convenient and not overly expensive. Lack of a hotel bar or restaurant wasn’t great. Although having Mel’s diner available is something, it’s not my place of choice. If looking for a place to crash that’s clean and comfortable and has just enough to relax while sleeping then this was good.
This was a delightful jewel in a very busy and noisy city. I was able to get a very good nights rest in a clean room. The only downside was no makeup mirror in the bathroom which I would have liked, but certainly did not diminish my enjoyment of the hotel. Walking distance to all my meetings too. Bart was less than a mile away, although walking through the Tenderloin is always an adventure.

No parking space. People having wild party.
We stayed here one night - the hotel room was a little small, but we expected that as it is a reclaimed hotel It was completely renovated and very comfortable. The staff was very courteous. And attentive to our need for extra towels.
BLUF: New hotel with small rooms and no amenities in a bad neighborhood. It was cheaper than other areas of the city, but the money spent to venture out with Uber/Lyft makes it not worth it. The surrounding neighborhood is awful and I constantly heard yelling/fighting and sirens from my tiny room. While the rooms are small they are up to date clean and stylish. There isnt a bar or restaurant in the hotel, but there is a diner adjacent to it but the hotel itself doesnt even have coffee for you in the morning.
Excellent stay. Great location, great staff, clean & lovely building.
There is no other place I would stay than the Courtyard (formerly The Opal). It is clean, well-maintained, classic, staffed with caring and attentive hospitality agents, and is like stepping into a different world. The care taken to remodel the hotel yet maintain its character and beauty is wonderful. After staying there, youll want to stay no other place as well.
Peter at the front desk is amazing super helpful. The hotel is beautiful everything is immaculate there is not one scratch on the wall the rooms are super clean everything is brand new what an amazing hotel simply blown away
This hotel is not a typical Courtyard. It is a small chic, boutique like hotel. It is absolutely beautiful. Staff is great, beds are comfy, and you can walk so many places from this location (Union Square, Oracle Park, Orpheum, etc), however, I recommend walking down Van Ness. We will definitely be back, as this is our new “go to” spot.
As a long time Marriott Platinum member and loyal patron, I’ve come to appreciate the value of the brand. But I’m here to say that has drastically changed. Someone at Marriott has decided that the primary purpose of a room is to not sleep at a minimum 2 people. Yes the beds hold 2 people, but the new room designs do not. We reserved a standard queen room. It was my wife and I. We had no room for our two pieces of luggage folks! We had literally 3 feet of space around each side of the bed. There was no room around the small bathroom sink to put shave bag while using the sink. Yet the room furniture was bulky and utilitarian. Folks, this is no longer the Marriott hotel rooms we’ve all come to want and expect to be comfortable. No longer a fan of the brand.
The old Opal Hotel - nicely updated. Our room was fantastic - large suite, nice furniture, comfortable bed, lots of drawer space for 3 of us. Cool lobby and great location for us visiting our daughter at USF. Construction going on Van Ness was a bummer, but the hotel is fantastic!
Loved everything about it except the construction outside on the street. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The lobby was so beautiful I took few pictures and showed it to few coworkers. My only concern was when I asked for toothbrush they asked me to come downstairs to the front desk but did accommodate sending someone to my room with it when I asked.
This was my first time staying at this Courtyard hotel. The service was exceptional and very friendly. Probably the best gym in a hotel Ive experienced before. The breakfast at Mels Kitchen was quick to order and receive plus very tasty! I will definitely be a return customer.
I booked a larger guest room 1king but the one I received looked exactly like the regular king room. The explanation I got is the room did have larger sqft. I stay in a hotel to enjoy the features of the room, not to measure the room size!
Great hotel. Very nice and quiet place. Personnel Is More than nice and helpful. Really recommend this hotel since Is very close to everywhere.
Almost everything about this hotel was very pleasant, nice hidden gem.I would gladly stay there again..but would never use the onsite restaurant again, horrible experience.
Check in was quick, staff appeared friendly. The room was a good size, clean, bed was comfortable, and the room was quiet considering the location/street. Only issue was when the heat was turned on there was high pitched buzzing for the first 4 minutes.
Great hotel. The rooms were comfortable and clean and the service from the staff was excellent. There aren’t a lot of restaurant choices close by but it appears the area around the hotel May have some development happening in the future.
The facility and room were great; far better than I was expecting. My only issue was with the thermostat, which kept resetting itself back to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. I kept adjusting it down to 65, but was woken up throughout the nights as it reset itself back to 72 and started heating the room, which caused me to wake up sweating. I was told it runs on a schedule that resets itself back to 72 around 10 pm and 6 am, but I caught it resetting three times between those hours. I really hope theyre able to get the thermostat working, and give the room more control. If it wasnt for the thermostat, the stay would have been one of my best.
The hotel was nice but hard to get to because of construction. There is no food service (other than a small pantry with a few things) and no bar. I loved the lobby, it would have been nice to have a bar there as well to unwind at the end of the day.
I loved the old world charm of this hotel and the Alice in Wonderland them they had going on. The room was spacious and provided all our needs. Quite considering all the construction. Most every one we spoke with was present except one woman and that was at check in.
