These apartments adjoining FiDi & Jackson Sq and near Chinatown & North Beach have great transit, little traffic, many nearby parks & the waterfront...good floor plans w/nice-sized balconies & some remarkable Bay & Bridge views. Built late 60s, it qualifies as historic, also bringing occasional maintenance & functional issues. Good new management is dealing w/issues & tenants association actively involved.
I really enjoy living here the place has wobderful views with a quiet and peaceful community and the new community manager is making a difference, perfect location down town location if you work in the financial district and also close to the market street and public transportation.
We love it here. My wife and I have lived in two apartments in two of the towers and we’re very happy with the experience. Great staff, amazing views, reasonable rates for the market, awesome location. This is a solid complex, especially if you prioritize location next to the Embarcadero. We worked with Abby recently in the management office to lease our second apartment there and she was excellent to work with. She took us on two separate tours so my wife and I could both see apartments. She curated what we saw very thoughtfully based on our budget and requests. She also helped make available all her staff so the transition into the apartment from our first would be seamless. We feel like we have an ally on the leasing team, and our new place is tranquil and beautiful. Our friends recently said it looks like living in a luxury airbnb because of the view. Thank you Abby!We also highly recommend JonPaul in the leasing office. He is kind, sharp, and funny. We worked with him day of our recent move and he was super helpful and made us feel at home.
Had an opportunity to accompany a friend who was interested in looking at 1 bedroom apartments inside Vista East at the Gateway in San Francisco. My only job was to take pictures. Ill include some pictures in this short review, but the real highlight was the way my friend was treated during her tour of two prospective apartments. Abby Woods was the property manager who accompanied us on the tour. She couldnt have been nicer. She knew the Gateway and the apartments. My friend asked questions which were all answered. Towards the end of the tour I asked her how long she had been a property manager. She answered, Since I was 19. Residents choose the Gateway for location, across the Embarcadero and the Ferry Building, and the views. Abby makes leasing an apartment at the Gateway easier than changing a mobile carrier, which we had done earlier that morning. Want to live at the best location in San Francisco with the best views? Visit the Gateway Leasing Office on the bottom floor and ask for Abby. Prepare to be amazed.
Gateway is a great aprtment in downtown sf with great view and staff. the frontdoor team in my building is very helpful and responsible, they take care of your pkg and deliver to your door. the garage is very safe and has wide space. the location is rly good, few minutes walking to safeway and the ferry building. Ive already recommended this place to some of my friends
The gateway looks like projects, except twice as expensive and half as nice
Amazing views yet the most poorly and I do mean the MOST poorly run apartment complex in San Francisco.Despite how old the building is and the appliances at my unit are, I love my apartment due to its gorgeous view and large balcony but I don’t think I’ll renew my lease, because, again, this property is the MOST poorly run/managed apartment complex I have ever seen.
We’re new residents of The Gateway, and we’re so thankful for thee leasing team. Abby & JonPaul were amazing to work with. We ended up with the perfect apartment for us. We appreciate how attentive, knowledgeable, and professional they were to make the process easy and seamless. Thank you Abby & JonPaul!
Stay away from The Gateway apartments. Its a complete waste of time. The leasing office is mismanaged and unhelpful. Their website apartment postings are misleading. The chatbot that confirms your appointment is broken. When you show up at the leasing office, there may not be anyone there. No one answers the leasing office phone. We happened to meet one of their agents who was completely unhelpful, unprofessional, and rude to us when we were trying to be understanding about their broken website. We met another person while waiting outside the leasing office also looking for an apartment that had the same experience. Read the other reviews with similar experiences. There are plenty of other apartments worth your time, energy and money.
I recently signed a lease for a 2db 1ba apartment at Gateway. The pros of these apartments are:1. View - every building has a unique view and they all are good2. Dog Friendly - these apartments are heaven for dogs, the proximity to parks is amazing3. Location - Perfect location, close to everything you want in San FranciscoThe only con I observed until now is that is a bit too noisy due to Embarcadero.I was helped via Jon Paul who is one of the leasing agents for the apartments. I had a talk with two other agents and I think he is the best. He is very prompt in replying and getting the job done which is what I needed. I would highly recommend talking to him if you are thinking of getting a lease here.
Ive seen a lot of sensational reviews for this place, and almost turned away because of the more negative ones. These apartments have some negatives, but they are definitely outweighed by the positivesCons:1) The apartments are old. They were built in the 60s and have old cabinets, popcorn ceiling, etc.2) If you choose poorly, you can get a lot of street noise. Its pretty quiet if you choose an apartment that doesnt face the street.3) They can be pretty unresponsive by phone. You really need to show up in person if you want to get a place.Pros:1) Location. I viewed probably 20 different places, and the gateway had the best location by far. The gateway itself is quiet and private, yet steps away from the pier, and walkable to job opportunities in FiDi and SoMa. Its nice to be near the downtown while also feeling removed from it.2) Price/ size. Apartments in SF are expensive and these are no exception. At the time of this writing, the gateway was one of the best values of price/sqft that I could find, compared to other offerings in the city. They are also rent-controlled.3) Views. These apartments have excellent views, which vary from building to building. There are great ocean and city views to choose from.Overall, I like the Gateway and think that they are an excellent value in terms of location and what you get for the money.
I think people should know this, especially anyone with an ownership interest--the leasing office is horribly managed and you are losing business. My wife and I walked the property on our own, decided we loved it, and repeatedly tried to contact someone to rent a unit. Eventually after so many emails and unreturned calls, we rented in Nob Hill. Literally weeks of no replies -- do you want to rent these or not?
The WORST management experience. The phone line is terrible and despite leaving several messages, no one returns your call. They are always away from their phones. Its been more than 3 months I left this super expensive place and they still cant return my security deposit. And let me point out its not a petty amount. The security deposit is at least 1.5x your monthly rent.
I would easily give the Gateway 6 Stars if possible! Absolutely stunning location with the perfect balance of urban & quiet for us - Literally a slice of home in the middle of the most desirable part of the city. Our leasing agent, Jon Paul went above and beyond to make sure to set us up with a perfect unit for the best available rate. We met with him in person a total of 5 times over the course of 2+ months to secure the right townhome for us. Not only did he provide fantastic service..he was incredibly responsive & attentive to our needs, always prompt in communication, met on-site with us on weekends, and even spoke to management on our behalf to meet our preferences. Honestly, he was so upbeat and proactive that during tours he would even pause momentarily to provide helpful directions to new residents and hold the door for elderly guests who passed by. If the overall property reflected our experience working with him, this place would definitely receive an award! We toured no less than 6 TOTAL residential complexes during our apartment hunt and considered 8 others... and I can say with certainty now that we made the right decision landing at the Gateway.Pros+ Unbeatable location - Perfect balance of city and residential+ Huge townhomes *which we chose* are the best deal in sq ft around+ In unit laundry, personal trash service, and 24/7 security+ Jon Paul (Enough said)Added Bonus: Currently typing this in my 300 sq foot bedroom..while every other highrise in the nieghborhood crams residents into 10x10 boxes for rooms.Cons- Facilities are older, but you ultimately get what you pay for- There is some riff raff outside the complex on the ground level, though nothing compared to Mission or SOMA (its SF..dont be a nimby)- Unsure about the experience living the Gateway towers. Didnt look as nice, but price-wise a lot cheaper than most highrises in generalI am a SF native who has been to every neighborhood in the city. If you want the true SF experience and the see the best that the city has to offer, I would look no further than getting a townhome at the Gateway Apartments!
Horrible Management.Their leasing office is almost impossible to reach with phone calls and emails that dont get returned after weeks of time. This apartment uses bait and switch tactics by listing apartments at a low price, then jacking up the price after you apply. Save yourself the time and heartache and choose another place.
I shouldve seen the reviews before I made an appointment. The leasing office was so unprofessional and it was the most horrible experience I ever had with the leasing office.
While I loved staying at the apartment, the move out process has been so painful. I was made to pay close to 5500 USD extra as I had to move out in emergency in March during the shelter in place and was told my refund will come in 3 weeks after my lease date ended which was June. Its been over 4 months of follow ups and over 10 emails with little/no response on where the money is. The company owes me close to 3000 USD and there is no one taking accountability in Greystar for responding and making sure I get my money back. They also deducted a 1000 USD carpet charge when I have a video and a letter from them saying there is nothing that will be deducted as the house is in perfect condition. This is after me getting the house deep cleaned before my move. Absolutely poor service especially inhumane during the COVID crisis.Edited after close to 8 months - I still haven’t received any updates on the carpet charges and other deductions made from my security deposit. Got my security refund after multiple follow ups a day and after threatening to sue for renters rights. Please avoid this place if you plan to lease for a short period of time. May work for someone who is looking to rent super long term, okay with rent control and letting go of most of their deposit.
After dealing with weeks of unanswered phone calls and emails, apartments that change drastically in price from day to day, and a rude, unresponsive leasing office, I am looking at other options for my place to live, and I recommend that you do the same.
This apartment is NOT smoke free, even though it is advertised as such. Some tenants are grandfathered in, and make the hallways smell like cigarette smoke.
Pets (incl. cats) not allowed, which is completely absurd. Could easily charge pet rent and/or deposit to make up for and minor overhead it would require. This excludes a large group of people from what could otherwise be a great community.
I will give it 0 star. Poor sound insulation, old and dated appliances, the building is old and dirty. Location is horrible with homeless and crazies loitering on the street. This is way overpriced. Stay away.
Really nice staff at the reception. Elevators always had technical problem during my stay (3 weeks, vista west tower), some official (sorry, this elevator is out of service), some unofficial (elevator would just stay permanently on a floor). But great location, great views (from most of the apartments) and great staff again!
I almost never get used to complaining where I have lived but this time I want to comment that this place is good as far as it is located but the administration is somewhat mishandled the operators answer in a very bad tone they do not listen to you and the maintenance of the buildings are completely bad, the engineering team is not adequate in the best way these people spend their time in golf carts all the time they dont do their work well I had a problem in my apartment which took a week to come the buildings have constant problems with the cqlefaccion this Very hot in the corridors and they dont care what kind of engineering is this? They charge the rent too much but the service is bad they must inspect this place before moving carefully
After over a year living here I must say this place is definitely not worth the money. Their appliances are super old, it takes forever for maintenance team to fix anything (elevators are constantly broken, the intercom in VistaWest took 6 months to replace...) the water changes its temperature randomly while you shower. The only thing they good at is charging you late fees when their system fails to process the rent payment. Stay away from this place if you want to keep peace of mind.
Stayed there for 2 months through a corporate apartment company that had a unit there. Stayed in 16 apartments in North America so far and this definitely makes top 3.The building itself is a bit old, amenities a bit dated and the rooms themselves are a bit old with washer dryer in the basement only but there are huge plusses. The location is absolutely superb and there arent much other options for living in the Financial District than this. The feeling of going for a stroll and being in the center of the city and being able to reach anything by foot is absolutely ecstatic. I only had a relatively short stay so this assessment isnt too scientific but I never heard a neighbour from inside the unit. Not from the hall, not from the sides, not from top or bottom. The balcony had an amazing view, transportation is convenient, park and grocery right in the building, farmers market within 5 minute walk, this is the quintessential city living.Probably the most annoying thing was that the hot/cold water pipes are completely unregulated so you never know what temperature the water coming out will be. Takes forever to take a shower because you have to be ready to jump out of the shower at any time when a gush of scalding water comes out.
Good location nice neighbors but the administration and accounting department are terrible. When you are dealing with residents finances you cant make mistakes!! They dont communicate well or apologize for mistakes. This is the most poorly managed complex I have lived in. Save yourself the trouble and live in one of the newer complexes, youll also have more space and everything will be new for the same price. Plus the gym circa 1960 is not included in the steep rent nor are there any indoor common spaces. Also be prepared to pay hundreds in mandatory cleaning fees upon move out as other reviewers have mentioned.I have yet to receive my deposit back even with my lawyers help because I have been illegally charged fees for parking I did not request. I also hear from neighbors that the complex is struggling to keep reside which is not surprising.I also almost forgot about our mice infestation, probably because its repressed memory. Yes our house was infested with mice although the Maintenace people laid many traps the mice where always able to come in through holes. Peed and pooped inside our couch and our base cabinets the also multiplied in our house and chewed anything accessible to them in our bathrooms.
Poor management!
Wish that the Gateway would power wash the sidewalks, building walls, town homes, interior of garages, etc. Hasnt been done in over 20 years if ever. Getting really dirty including the relatively new Davis Court plaza which now shows ground in dirt, oil spots on the plaza floor, and dirty benches. The Safeway Sidewalk is always dirty including the piled up garbage cans out front.
OVER PRICE, Cheap Ugly Decor like a by the day motel. Not worth living thete. Not all apts have working fire alarms. Safety isdues and the City doesnt do their jobs to check if things are up to code.
My home away from home. Apartments are clean, people are respectful and it just wouldnt be the same without Roy Santos welcoming us every day!
Great location. Wonderful apartments. Costly but good place overall. Security is pushy, rude, and much akin to the secret police of highly oppressive dictatorial regimes.
The buildings are old, but the management is competent and the location is great. A very nice place to live.
Great sea view and facilities thereis a Safeway downstairs very near to market Street
The leasing center does not do anything for the residents. Its May, and I asked them to turn off the heater, it takes more than 5 days now, they told me they need to change the valve, and no one is coming to the apartment to change the valve. The person who answered the call from admin office is not in a good tone. He is very rude.
Its in a good spot. Many places are near by. We got a view of the ocean.
Conveniently located, costly, but then again in SF what isnt...But good service and really great location so its worth it.
Great location with nice ocean view.
Amazing panoramic view and great neighborhood
The apartments are centrally located. They are a little pricey but the personnel is friendly enough
The views are great but a Horrible place to live and Horrible management. The interior of the units appear to be the original finishes. Carpet is extremely dirty. The hallways reek of trash as the trash chutes hardly close so if theyre open the wind forces the smell out of the open door which makes the halls and your unit smell awful. This is a rent controlled property so the demographic is older due to the legacy effect of rent control. There is no AC and with a concrete building the units get extremely hot and uncomfortable to sleep. If you have any issues with loud neighbors the security is so slow that they usually miss whats happening and then management says they cant do anything because they didnt hear it.Save yourself a lot of heartache and smell and check out any other place.
Great view and rooms.
