I booked with Luminary for my wedding hair and make up after a referral from my designer! Blake was so helpful and made the booking process incredibly easy. Luminary was flexible with minor schedule changes and questions. Blake and Abby arrived to our hotel room to style our hair and to do our make up. They were both so lovely and kind, adding good vibes to my wedding day. They did a beautiful job and accepted tweaks and feedback based on person preference, adjusting to make the look perfect! I recently moved to Richmond and so I needed to find a new stylist who I could trust. Ive only been to Luminary once so far, but they left a great first impression. Laura was amazing and so helpful, she listened to what I wanted done and executed it perfectly. I dont think I could have been happier with my hair! Out of all the places in Richmond, I picked this salon because of the fair prices, but more importantly because I support their values of inclusiveness and genuinely catering to every customer that walks through the door. I scheduled my next appointment already and I cant wait to come back!

The Luminary is a spectacular, inclusive, fun, and welcoming salon in the gorgeous neighborhood of Church Hill. Kat and Augie made me feel at home immediately, treating me like an old friend rather than some new weirdo. I gave Kat pretty free rein on my scraggly self-trimmed mop and she knocked it out of the park. My hair is light, bouncy, and totally gorgeous. Ill be back soon for a color for sure!!

I loved how welcoming the environment was. As a transgender person, it can be difficult finding a place that will listen to what you really want and disregard the gender you appear as to give you a quality haircut you genuinely like. The staff is really kind and respectful, highly recommend.

What an absolutely incredible hair salon. I had an experience there that I didnt know I could have at a hair salon. Never have I walked into an establishment and felt so welcome as a queer person. This place is the future! Abby was a DREAM, she did an amazing job and Ill definitely be back for her. Everyone there is so nice and I was so impressed by their inclusivity. On top of that, the aesthetic is so lovely and professional. I didnt think one of my favorite places in Richmond was going to be a hair salon, but here we are.

I love Luminary! My hair always looks amazing and everyone there is so friendly and confirming. They’re always on time and scheduling is super easy. I park nearby and it’s very centrally located in Church Hill- maybe 5 minutes from the highway. They’ve also been very safety conscious, and even helped me when I couldn’t go in for haircare. My first visit to the salon. Laura took her time to listen to my wishes for a new style. She made suggestions, explained how to achieve the look I was wanting and did an amazing job to give me what I was looking for. Very pleased with the professionalism but also with the way the salon as a whole makes their clients feel comfortable and confident.

I was scheduled for a follow up appointment in MAY from my appointment in Feb. I was never reminded of my appointment like they claim. They claim they sent the reminder on their end, but I never received. I was charged $127!!!! for not attending an appointment that I made in Feb and was not reminded of. My doctor’s office does a better job of reminding me of an appointment, and they would never charge such an extreme fee for a missed appointment. Luminary has definitely lost a consistent client as they were not understanding of the situation whatsoever. Horrible customer service. I do not recommend.

I went in for the first haircut of my life as a finally out queer person. I had no idea what I wanted. Mazzy hooked me up. I didnt understand the beauty of their work until I got home. They made me look how I feel. Suddenly every hair on my head makes sense. If you are queer and want your hair did, this is the place, hands down. Luminary is a true RVA gem. They stylists here are so talented. I had Tina Jarvis, who is new to the salon do my first cut since COVID-19 hit last year. She listened to what I envisioned, but also had amazing suggestions to try something new and out of my box that made this cut so worth it. She was kind and hilarious. My haircut was absolutely amazing. She made me feel confident and sexy. We had a blast! Everyone at Luminary was so welcoming and professional. I will be coming here for all my cuts in the future and will be recommending this place to friends!

Luminary is a gem, and if you haven’t been you must go! All of the stylists are incredibly talented. You can be confident whoever you book with can do it all. I’ve gone several times for blow outs and they transform my otherwise super fine, limp hair. My husband goes for cuts with Blake, who’s so good my husband won’t go anywhere else (he previously would just go as a walk-in to whatever random salons, but no more). Everyone there is so kind and warm-hearted, you always feel like you’re special, and it’s clear the salon truly cares about the community. I also love their gender-neutral pricing!

Mazzy took care of me on Sunday the 23rd. My undercut DESPERATELY needed to be tended too, I also have been going to another barber but due to some scheduling I wouldnt be able to make it to them in August. Anyway Mazzy made me feel like we had known each other for years! We talked movies and music and before I knew it my time with them was up, I am already booked for 3 weeks out! I couldnt be happier! After a long hair journey with PCOS fall out and then growing it back AND THEN a botched hair cut from another salon I reached out to Luminary Hair for an SOS hair cut before my head shots. Blake was so kind and was able to maintain length while fixing my hair. He did a balayage that completely matched my natural blonde. I was beyond pleased and may have teared up a bit because I felt like myself again!

I saw Kristen last month for a haircut and balayage and I won’t go anywhere else in the future! As someone with extremely thick hair, I often feel anxious and almost guilty going into hair appointments. Kristen was great at helping me decide on a style that was realistic for my hair texture. She even gave me great advise on how to care for my hair afterwards. This was the best possible experience I could have asked for and she gave me the best haircut and color I’ve ever had.

Blake not only gave me an incredibly safe and appreciated COVID-friendly cut but also one of the honestly best curly haircuts Ive ever received. He took a genuine interest in my hobbies as we chatted and demonstrated his talent for cutting curls through the questions he asked of my hair practice, the way he cut it and the diffuser dry finish.

The women that greeted me was very nice and so was the man that did my hair but it did not meet my expectations. I came in for a bang trim because my fringe bangs were getting too long and were in my eyes. I left with my bangs in the middle of my forehead and very thick and choppy it almost looks like I have a bowl cut going on. I feel as tho the stylist tried his best and that’s why I was not rude given how upset i am with my hair.

I really want to love this salon. The people are great, the environment is great, they are inclusive and wonderful. However, I’ve been in now for a few things and every time I leave, I’m disappointed. The first time my haircut was uneven and not what I wanted at all. I came back for a correction and left just as disappointed. At this point I thought it might just be the stylist. But then I went in for a color job. Now again, I loved everyone who helped and provided me service. In this area they are top notch. In the salon my hair looked great, but going home I saw a lot of patches in my hair where the dye was not applied correctly. They did not saturate my hair at all. They also did not use moisturizing products on my hair after bleaching and I feel like my hair texture was messed up for it. I even asked for product recommendations and their advice was terrible. For what it’s worth, I’ve had my hair bleached beyond recognition and still managed to have hair that didn’t feel like straw. Also, I was paying for one of their top stylists, like $100 an hour. I haven’t asked for a correction because at this point, I can’t really see why I would trust them again. I really wish them well, again, an inclusive wonderful space is much needed, but it seems to me it’s a lot of overeager young stylists with not much experience. I hate to say it, but I’ll be looking for another salon for my next appointment.

What a great experience! I just went for a free consultation with Blake and in one visit learned more about my hair than I have in a lifetime of going to great clips and other chain cutteries. The staff is friendly and inviting and they did a great job screening me with everyone inside properly wearing masks. So excited I found them and went in!

I basically never leave reviews but this place is the best salon Ive been to. Ive bounced from salon to salon over the past several years, I like a more funky eclectic style and I feel like its hard to find someone who knows how to do that. Last year I tried Luminary and been going ever since! Kristen is fabulous and always gives me the kind of cut Im looking for, the vibe is relaxing and fun, and I love that they do pricing by length and not gender.

I got THE best haircut from Catie here a few weeks ago. I went in with nothing particular in mind; just wanted something that could be really quick and easy to style and still look cute/different. She was very attentive and insightful and honestly chose the best cut for my lifestyle, preferences, and hair type. I dont even have to style my bangs for it to look amazing and I didnt know that was possible?? Shook. Its effortless and looks great and I love it! Caiti and the other staff were very professional, friendly, and fun. Also, the salon itself is the cutest! Honestly, this was one of the best experiences Ive had getting a hair cut before and I am so so grateful to Caiti for helping me feel effortlessly lovely. I plan to go back for an all-over color when Im able and Im excited to see how it goes! 😊

Booked in for a long hair appointment and given a 15 minute window while the stylist had another client under a dryer. I left with wet hair so couldnt see what my hair was going to look like when dry. Now I am home and it is dry I can see that it is completely uneven. I didnt ask for, or want an asymmetrical neckline.Its a shame I am new to the area so wanted to find someone to be my regular go to stylist. The location is good, as was the banter. I just feel my expectations were not met at all.

Blake and Abby were my Wedding Day glam squad and OMG were they amazing.. beyond amazing!!! They came prepared for anything... i mean ANYTHING!!!!! They listened to everything each of the ladies wanted everything from ultra glam to more natural! They stayed on schedule and were an awesome hype team all day!!! They were really really wonderful and I wouldnt have wanted anyone else !!!! Blake and Abby are always such wonderful people and having them as my glam squad was a no brainer!!!

Great short-hair haircut! Autumn was able to fit me in on short notice. She patiently listened while I described what I was looking for in a zero maintenance hairstyle that not only looked hip and stylish, but feminine and professional. No pressure, right? Was I being unrealistic? Apparently not. She cut while I relaxed, closed my eyes and hoped for the best. When she showed me her work, the cut looked an awesome at 360, tho I told her I could go even shorter in the back. She happily put the finishing touches on a cute little look that really makes me happy! Could not have asked for a better experience. Thank you!

Autumn is seriously so great. Ive been seeing her for maybe a little over a year now and she never disappoints. Shes open to ideas that I have (shaved head, super short hair, color), but will also fit in her ideas about what she thinks would work well on me. At this point, I let her do pretty much whatever she wants to my hair and Ive never left her feeling less than amazing. GO TO HER, SHES AWESOME.

Went to get my hair cut this past Saturday by stylist Autumn and she did an amazing job. My hair needed saving from all the damage I did to it and she did magic. Very clean shop and friendly staff. Carly is a wonderful hairstylist and I plan on going back to her for another cut and color in 8 weeks. I highly recommend this salon for their awesome service and competitive prices. I went in to Luminary to get a balayage coloring and it cost me a total of $210 after tips. My hair didnt come out remotely close to what I had asked for and I was charged for the full time block when I was out of there a half hour early. I mean Im paying to sit there in silence by myself while my hair bleaches to begin with I deserve the full 3 hours I paid for! That is an insane amount of money to not get anything close to what I desired. I specifically asked for a little curl/wave to my hair so it wouldnt be flat and smooth textured. I also wanted light blonde for the balayage, but I expected my budget wouldnt allow them to get it where I wanted. However, this is so far off I regret even walking in the door and I wont return. I literally cried on my way home after forcing a smile during the payment process. The girl doing my hair was really nice, even if quiet during the process. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was calm and welcoming. I still am upset that I spent that much money and my hair isnt at all what I requested. I didnt even know what to say to them... I had no more money to give.

I had my wedding hair & makeup done here by Carly & Adri. They were amazing! First, I had a trial run where we talked through styles and preferences. They took into account my overall wedding and personal style as well as practical things like dealing with humidity or wind. The day of, I went with my wedding party and we all got ready together. Adri & Carly were able to cater to each persons unique style and got us all done in record time. They were kind, fun and super talented. I found them to be of great value, especially compared to salons or artists who specialize in bridal beauty. I highly recommend booking them for your special day!

Normally, I am not one to leave reviews unless its so help others avoid bad experiences, but this place is AMAZING. After dozens and dozens of horror stories from nearly every salon I had gone to, I became a DIY at home box color type of chick. TARA CHANGED EVERYTHING!!!! She is absolutely awesome, very real and laid back and having fun at her job, which spoke VOLUMES to me as a complete novice to the real world of salons. Not only did she take the time beforehand to go through photos I had brought and make sure I was getting EXACTLY what I wanted before the process began, but she was super attentive and helpful until I was literally walking out the door to head home. I have never felt so valued and welcomed in a completely new place before, so it just made the entire experience that much greater. My hair feels AMAZING and I could not have pictured the color working and flowing better than she created. I HAVE BEEN CONVERTED! I will never be a DIY stylist for myself any more, and now I am counting down the days to go back to Tara and get my trim, and maybe add in a few more highlights, who knows.... But Tara has made me a believer! I will not go anywhere else. :)

Fabulous salon and very friendly staff. I drove from Fredericksburg to Luminary, that is how desperate I was for a decent salon. Adri did an awesome job on my color and cut. She gave me ideas and honest opinions which is hard to find in a hairdresser.

Management is worst regarding the appointments. I booked an appointment for Thursday and on Thursday they told me there is no appointment on the day and in the last minute I got a message that it’s canceled due to no show.

Blake tried to fix my roots, dyed my hair 3 different shades by accident and ruined it.. Then proceeded to confidently ask me for 200 dollars for the job. Not even offering a free touch up after when it was obviously atrocious... I walked out with bright pumpkin orange hair, with patches of white and sand blonde.. Ive never been a hair stylist and have dyed my own hair much better in the past...Nice salon inside but, make sure you dont book Blake! Awful experience. Had to go to another stylist in Carytown the next day to correct it.. The first thing my new stylist asked was...who did I let mess my hair up!! Beware of Blake

Carly is the real real. When I first met Carly, she was working at Blackbird on Lombardy. I was a broke grad student and a freak about my hair (I still am a freak about my hair... no longer grad student... jury is still out on being broke).I had lost all my hair in high school due to chemotherapy and had spent years anxiously awaiting my locks to grow back. I previously only had one other hairstylist and was riddled with the fear of even going to the salon. I had never colored my new virgin hair and had spent way too much money on millimeter trims and this is when I realized my hair had finally gotten a little too sister wife/culty long. So I broke down and decided to find a hairstylist in RVA. A ton of my peers were going to Blackbird to see Carly and they were all pretty ecstatic with her skills. I usually wouldnt take the advice from some regular ole Joe off the street, but these were some pretty bougey men and women, whom all take their hair pretty seriously. So I made my first appointment at Blackbird with Carly.At this point, Im a spaz, my hair is not only incredibly long, but thick and curly, so I knew whomever the stylist was that would try and make something of this magical mop, would have to be an angel sent down from baby Jesus... And she is! Carly is not only kind, patient and a great listener, but shes just gawd damn talented.After being greeted with a big warm hug, Carly always makes sure we have a pretty thorough game plan. She allows her clients to collaborate with her and is always is always open to new ideas. I appreciate someone who is honest and will tell you straight up, i dont think that is a great idea. We all need a little guidance every once in awhile.Bottom line: Blackbird is filled with great vibes and great stylist. Theres something to be said about artist, who love their business, their salons and their clients. I highly recommend.
