He literally transformed my hair by adding seamless layers and so much volume. It is so effortless to style and I absolutely love it. Justin is amazing! I can’t wait to return next week with my daughter who has even longer, thicker and curlier hair than I do.

My Fiancé and I were popping in and visiting Portland for a night and I was lucky enough to snag an appointment with DJ Hickey! She’s spectacular. Not only did she listen to what my goal was, but also explained the process, how to achieve that goal and EDUCATED me. I went in with hair color that I’d recently gotten and was unhappy with and she completely transformed it. She made me feel comfortable and we had great conversation. I’lll definitely consider driving 5.5 hrs from MA for another appointment.

SHORT STORY: I had the best haircut of my life by Justin. If you have a chance to get your haircut by him, take it. You will not be disappointed. LONG STORY: When I walked into the salon for the first time, what a warm and welcoming space it was. I couldnt help but notice the beautiful chair I sat in for the cut and I commented on it. Justin told me that the previous owner of what had been a mens barbershop was throwing it out. It was original to the space, probably from the 1920s. Justin immediately saw the beauty others overlooked. He had the handles re-porcelained, top quality leather put on the seat cushions and transformed what was once trash into treasure. He brings the same care and attention to his customers hair. I entered the salon with a hairstyle I had for many years and left feeling transformed. Justin took the time to have a real conversation with me about my hair. He talked about the texture and asked me questions that no stylist had asked me before. I have very thick, long, curly hair and have never returned home from a haircut perfectly pleased. HOWEVER, after my first visit at Ethan Hunter Salon, Jessica worked her magic on my hair and now, over a week later, after testing out various hairstyles (curly, blown out, etc) I am blown away at her talent! The cut she gave me looks fabulous any way I style it or even with air-drying and Ive never been able to say that before. She also took the time to educate me about my hair-- the types of haircut styles I should stay away from with my hair type and the types of cuts that would be flattering. Then she proceeded to give me the most flattering haircut, EXACTLY manifesting what I had described! She also then gave me ideas for various professional hairstyles I could try since Ive long struggled to do my hair in a way that made my wild mane look put together enough for professional settings. My first visit to this salon was in November 2020 - im very satisfied, it’s the best haircut I’ve ever gotten, which i found incredibly impressive as Justin seamlessly transitioned from barbering a man to cutting my long hair which I am pretty protective of. Justin and Jess work as a highly talented, professional, and engaging team. I went in sharing I hoped to keep the length on my hair while giving it some dimension and movement - they nailed it. I strongly recommend Jessica at Ethan Hunter Salon. After another salon left me with an unflattering cut, I read the great reviews for Ethan Hunter Salon and called for appointment. Jessica heard my distress and although booked solid for the next few weeks, offered other options or she would try to fit me in as soon as possible. I decided to wait for an opening with her/salon and am so glad I did. She heard what I wanted for color which was perfect. Then she found a way to style my hair to improve the shape...and now 2 months in, my hair style is the best its been in years. The salon is small but homey, the atmosphere casual. This was my first time into Ethan Hunter, but it felt like I was walking into a friend’s home. Its tucked away unassumingly on Fore St (really easy access if you park down on Commercial St) and it’s just so cozy inside! I was offered a coffee right as I stepped in. Jessica took the time to understand my hair (and scalp!) before jumping in. The cut is fantastic, and my hair feels so healthy and soft. Can’t recommend this spot enough!

By far, the best haircut I’ve ever had. I have thick hair that no one has been able to master for 48 years. I’m still amazed that he was able to instinctively know exactly how my hair wanted to be handled and gave me the hairstyle I’ve always wanted! Instead of wetting it down, he dry cut it so he could tell which way the hair wanted to flip naturally. Now that’s respecting the damn curls! Wow! This is his calling. He has mastered this profession. This was the fourth salon I’ve tried since moving here over a year ago. I found my hair heaven!

Best hair cut I’ve ever had. I have long very thick hair that’s half kinky curl and half straight. I’ve always had to wear it up. Since Justin’s been cutting my hair I wear it down all the time. It’s half the weight without the use of thinning shears. He does a dry cut so he can see how it falls! No more blunt edges or shelves, it blends perfectly. He’s a genius!

Ive had my hair cut in NYC, Boston, and locally. This is one of the best hair cuts Ive ever received. Im not sure how to capture how much Justin knows about hair. How many times have you had a hair cut where a stylist gives you something in the family of meta styles that is trending but it just doesnt suit you? Rest assured that you will not receive THAT hair cut. You live with your hair every day. Now you can actually like it.

They dont measure up and quite simply...he is the best barber I have ever had. Pleasant, quick, excellent and easy. Jamie is amazing! I knew her in art classes in high school where she showed raw talent, and so I wanted to support her new career when she hit the floor! I am quite particular about my haircuts and I could not find any locations to my liking. I travel often for work and I have been to salons in many different states. I came across Ethan Hunter in Portland Maine and have not went elsewhere to get my haircut since. Justin does a phenomenal job cutting hair and listens to the client. Was in Portland for the day and needed a haircut for a wedding I was to be in the following Saturday. They service was quick, friendly, professional and they were very extra courteous by making time for a last minute walk-in. Most importantly though, I look F***ing Good. Highly recommend.

Just got my second cut from DJ @ Ethan Hunter in Portland, Maine. The first cut from her was an extreme change from a previously long hairstyle of mine, and she executed the cut spectacularly using only a reference image I had brought with me. Maintaining the look should be no problem. Call ahead and book an appointment, its probably the highest quality mens hair salon in Portland, Maine. If you book DJ and after the cut she asks you if youre in a hurry, say no.

Absolutely amazing! The staff is great and the experience is unbeatable. Ethan Hunter Salon has a comfortable atmosphere thats more than relaxing. Ask for Robin Littlefield! She took my dry and lifeless hair, and gave me a beautiful haircut. My hair is not only healthy now but cut in a manner that I can actually keep up with and maintain with my busy schedule! My job puts me front and center with the ultra wealthy, the college presidents and the politicians, and twice now I had clients discuss this place and reference it as the secret top spot for professional hair stylists. Its almost hidden. They remind me of a restaurant in Boston that doesnt have a sign. The manager of the restaurant (one of my clients) told me that said if you dont know my restaurant without a sign, you just probably arent meant for it. Ethan Hunter is not pretentious at all, but the professionals in the area seem to be willing to hunt them down because it is worth the effort. They are upstairs, and their sign is simple, but just look at the reviews they get here.

Ive been going to Ethan Hunter for two years now, and love it. Justin always does a great job, and provides suggestions on what to try if Im looking for something new. He also does a great job with a beard trim, which is only a slight add-on.

Justin Hunter is the best hair-cutter in town. He is wildly over-qualified and a pleasure to experience. A 10-minute haircut from this guy is equivalent to a month at the spa. Do yourself a favor and stop in.

I’ve actually tried writing a review before, but it was not published. I’ve lived in several states, and gone to multiple barbers/salons/etc to find a good haircut. Justin cuts my hair better than anyone. I sent my wife in to get her hair cut by him as well... and she was actually (never happens) happy with it. Justin was very anxious to hear any critiques we had about our hair cuts, and was not satisfied until he met our expectations. No hesitation - give him a shot.
