Go Vertical is one of the best rock gyms in the area for indoor rock climbing, particularly top-roping and lead climbing. It is also not a bad place to boulder, but there are definitely other gyms to go to that are better to boulder at.They also have auto belay devices for people who might not come with somebody who can belay them. The downside here is that there are only 2 of those, so it really is more worth it to come with somebody. The prices for rentals aren’t terrible, but I would bring your own equipment.
No sandbagging here. the prices are low and the grades are tough. its rarely crowded on weekday afternoons and i have never had to wait to hop on a route. still, i have found everyone around willing to offer beta or just have a friendly chat. this isnt a fancy place, it is a great place to climb and chill. sometimes there is even a beautiful dog running around and he makes me so happy. ive been getting in three days a week and i really appreciate how easy it has been for me to get there and get on the wall.
Cool climbing gym. The staff is informative and unobtrusive. I personally like the music that they play. There are no crash pads for bouldering, but the floor is spongy. There are walls for top rope and others strictly for lead climbing. They do have classes as well as private instruction. Also, they offer climbing passes, monthly memberships, or yearly memberships.
A friend set this up as an activity to celebrate her birthday so we went this past Saturday. My first time here but woukd definitely come back when looking to do indoor rock climbing. The entire staff is really friendly and helpful. Our instructor was great! She was very encouraging, gave good tips on ways to not tire ourselves out, and just had a great, lively personality. We had a 2hour block for climbing so we did at least 4 different walls, ending our cool down climb on the wall we started with.Happy we went and, as said earlier, would recommend and see this as a first choice for indoor rock climbing.
A group of us drove 30 minutes to get to the location sadly to discover.......a closed business. After many attempts of calling, we were greeted of the sound of the ringing over a few minutes of trying to see if they would reopen. By no means am I on the end of being upset but I would say I am disappointed. Lesson learned if you read this review: Call first. 🤷🏻♂️
My husband and I have 20+ years of indoor/outdoor climbing experience between the two of us - which by no means makes us experts, however, if we dont feel safe climbing here then I would caution any beginner climbers to reconsider going here. During our belay test an employee stated that he would prefer we DONT use a stopper knot at the belay end of the rope, despite the fact that this is a common safety practice. They also prefer that climbers do NOT tie their own figure 8 knots, and they have figure 8s tied into every rope and taped in place so you cannot even verify or fix them if they look sloppy (see attached photo). Most of the ropes are so old and worn theyre difficult to feed through an ATC. Route setting was less than inspiring.
This is my favorite rock climbing gym! We were members for years, and the staff really takes the time to get to know you. Even going back years later I felt just as welcomed even though I wasnt a regular anymore. This old warehouse turned rock gym offers an amazing assortment of top rope, lead rope and bouldering options. Theres something for every skill level.
We went during a Thursday early afternoon and were the only ones in there. We took lessons, which allowed us three rope climbs (varying degrees of difficulty depending on your comfortability). My girlfriend and I tried a harder set for beginnings and completing it was really rewarding. For my last climb, I made it to the very top but didnt have enough energy to grab the last hold. The entire time the staff was cheering me on and giving me as much positive energy as one could. It was such a cool experience and were definitely going back.
First time great experience. Good instructor 👍
I went and it was fun, rock climbing was very fun with certain ropes. I loved, just wished it smelled a little better.
Been steadily coming here for two months now. The staff are super friendly and were very patient with coworkers I brought who never climbed before. Belay certification process was also easy. Ive never had an issue with other climbers or the bouldering routes, which seem to be changed relatively frequently. Top rope, sport climbing, and bouldering all available. The gym can get crowded by 6-7pm, but never so much so that you have to wait long to try a route.
Cool place, but very strict in its reservation policy. We reserved for 18, but only 15 came. They would work with us. Not all staff were experienced.
A neat place.Good equipment.Teaching available and qualified.
Old school rock climbing gym. Strong route setters, friendly employees. Great place to climb!! Climb on.
Everybody is super supportive, encouraging and exteremly helpful. I did the beginners class last night, ended up being private lesson. Cant wait to go back. Great place and a great workout.
Great place for a forearm workout. The instructors were very helpful and gave us a good time. They made me want to come back, and i will.
Very friendly, helpful staff. Bouldering selection is somewhat limited, but still adequate. Great top-roping.
Nicest people. My wife climbed here for the first time, great place to start climbing. A lot of routes and options.
It was just okay, I mean if you like rock climbing only then you were good but I thought it was going to have some other things
Showed up, Closed on feb15, no mention of it online or on instagram
I love this place. Totally chill, great routes for bouldering, and great prices compared to the others in the area.
Awesome place with cool staff. Highly recommend. Be prepared, its harder than it looks!
Cool place but the people running it are clueless and rude. Make sure you bring your birth certificate and proof of identification because these guys are legal experts... Also if you are under 18 and print out a legal waiver at home make sure it is the appropriate size or it isnt considered legally legitimate and wouldnt hold up in court (or so they say...). I spent over an hour debating with their clueless front desk man over a quarter inch difference in the size of the waiver I printed. Wouldnt recommend this particular location to anyone.
This place is fun and professional. As a beginner it was doable but still challenging
Excellent place and service. I enjoyed it a lot!
This is the worst gym I have ever been to. Its old, and falling apart. No training area. The holds are set in areas where they cant lay flat creating space between the hold and the wall. Messy. Unsafe looking. Cracks in the walls. One of the two auto belays was set with too strong tention so it holds 40% of your weight. Also it is placed in the worst area above an overhang so you swing out on your way down to the middle of the gym. Plenty of straight walls they could have installed it on. Thoughtless. The holds on the routes do not match even closely making it impossible to know where to go. The tape is placed below the holds so it cant be seen when climbing. No rhyme or reason. 5.4 holds on 5.10 routes. V0 routes where you need to crack climb in order to do the route. Holds set too far on beginner routes ( 5.0 -5.6 ) which according to staff all route numbers are subjective.. Oh but he doesnt really climb. Wow. You can not see in the bouldering area at all and there are no crash pads. Just old spring pads with spaces between them taped together with duct tape. I did not feel safe or interested in climbing here. So disappointed. I wanted so badly to find a good gym in Philly. I think Philly can do better. Hopefully someone buys it and fixes it up and hires experienced climbers to route set.
Dont waste your time here!
I have been climbing for over twenty years, and have been to gyms all over the world and this is one of the worst in many ways despite its good points. The down sides of this gym.It has the same worn out hand holds from when I visited they gym 15 years ago.The route setting is armature at best. Who ever the lead route setter is must have rarely climbed outside. In addition, I am 6ft high, and often the moves are reachy for me.The facilities are disintegrating around the dying building. The positive is the lead walls are long.I am glad i only have to climb at this gym for two months.PRG despite being small is a much better gym.The up side to this q
Best climbing gym in Philadelphia by far. Perfect for training, and the routes are taller than any other gym.
This is by far the worst gym Ive ever had experienced. The gym isnt very well equipped,. Whoever is in charge may want to take heed that their staffers may be costing them money with their less than friendly attitude.
Staff members were great! Had a great experience from start to finish.. A++
Awesome really love this place👍
Casual atmosphere and good lead climbing. Bouldering needs to be expanded and the building needs a renovation.
My kids had a great time.
Good instructors but bad facility. Bouldering section is poorly set and small.
I was blown away by how unresponsive and unfriendly the staff here were. The gym has lots of nice long routes (bouldering not as good), and patrons are friendly.Nice that the routes and problems are updated on a weekly cycle -- means theres usually something new to climb when you come in.
Absolutely love this place! Some of the more modern nd more difficult top rope problems in the area. The space is quite big and there is something for all levels! Lots of bouldering problems mixed with top rope, as well as a section dedicated to only bouldering. Also really fun traverse you can do across almost the whole gym. The staff is very friendly, and are willing to help you solve a problem if you are stuck. The people there mske you feel at home, not just the staff but other members as well. With a lack of local outdoor climbing you really cant beat this spot.
In from out of town. Saw all the poor reviews, decided to try it anyway. Its a great gym, the only downside is you have to keep your shirt on.
Took my family for what we thought would be a fun outing. Our guide was condescending and rude.
Had a great time and felt comfortable with instructions. Was a time well spent
The gym is great. I made a membership in April 2017 and was happy until I needed to go abroad and freeze/cancel my membership.Be aware: THEY DO NOT FREEZ OR CANCEL MEMBERSHIP ADEQUATELY!1. in June 2017 I arrived to front desk of the gym to ask to cancel the membership. They told me to write email to: [email protected]. I wrote 2 emails to jackm@govertical in two weeks and got ZERO response. Two weeks later wrote again: no response.3. In July sent a friend to the gym to ask them whats going on (I was abroad already and GoVertical do not answer emails). After my friend went there they canceled/freeze the membership (in words - they give NO written confirmations) and didnt charge me for the month of August. I thought all good...5. When I came back in January 2018 I seen that they charged me from September through January each month! These are 5 months of $65. I wend to the front dest and asked whats going on?! and you can guess the answer: you need to write to jackm@govertical.... I asked to cancel the membership on the spot - and their answer is: YOU CAN NOT DO IT. I asked for phone number to call Jack or to meet him during office hours: YOU CAN NOT DO THAT with them - emails only.Horrible service. Not fair. Not nice. No ethics. So, before you sign anything with them and or give money think if you want to deal with this type of service.

This gym is as safe as any gym Ive been to... if not safer. The staff is more attentive to safety. I think the reviewers who claim it isnt safe, arent really sure what they are talking about.Ive been climbing here for 10 years.I do wish it had a weight training room like some of the gyms in other cities. (thinking earthtreks and metro rock).
Best rock gym in the area. Family friendly too.
Beginner through advanced, theres walls for all! Fun and a solid workout!
Good and fun if you like climbing
I have been going to GV for a year now and it was a great introduction to climbing . Now Im hooked!
Favorite local gym. Helpful staff. Stiff climbs for the grades.
Been climbing here for about 6 months now almost weekly.Routes are long and fun, though I do agree with some reviewers that the main way they increase difficulty is by having larger moves. This can be fun when there are big dyno moves involved but the other side of it is some really annoying hug the wall and smear moves to get to the next holds if youre under 65.Staff seems to be hit or miss, several of the employees are absolutely stellar, friendly, and willing to chat about routes. Others seem to be dependent on what day you catch them on.Equipment is really the only thing I can criticize. Some ropes are brand new and others have the sheaths stretched badly and the cores twisted which makes belaying a PITA. Their rental carabineers are a total crapshoot, some are new and some are in questionable condition. I prefer to tie myself into ropes but, unlike other reviewers, Ive never seen any reason to question the pre-tied figure 8 follow throughs. They are all tied fine and the rational is its a liability thing for insurance. They dont have to rely on the climber knowing a skill they just have to clip in. Not a big deal. All in all I really like this gym, I just wish they would freshen up their ropes.
Great staff, help my young ones get their first feel of climbing
If you want to climb and no other gym is around then go here. You are welcomed by a scent of stinky feet which goes away the further you are in the gym (not sure why it is so concentrated at the entrance). Climbs are higher then Ive done which are nice. At the top you will probably stop because of how warm it is.Membership: You pay 3 months up front (no freezing during this time). To cancel you need to send an email before the 14th.Unexpected Things:1) You need to buy 2 clips for attaching yourself to thier pre-safety knots thay also have tape around them.Thoughts in my head while climbing: I really hope this rope holds me and does not undo!2) Rope vary from each climb...be careful! Some are very bouncy which can be dangerous if you fall and hit the ground or swing. Some are very stiff where belaying is not easy to take the rope and then releasing when letting the person climb down.Floors are the blue mats (similar to the ones used in gymnastics) and taped together.Climbing routes have a strip of tape to mark each hold.
Great service! Good place to climb and chill
Love rock climbing had so much fun for my birthday.
Cool place with friendly staff and good routes.
Awesome indoor climbing facility with really helpful guides and instructors
Great climbing gym, especially for top rope and lead climbing.
Really really good rock gym, too bad in the off peak its too calm for me
The gym is in a dilapidated building. This in and of its self is funky. Unfortunately, it foreshadowed the rest of my experience. Except for one very very amiable guy, the staff was lukewarm. I felt like I was intruding on them, and their time. They do not abide the bro pass, or give discounts to fellow climbing staff. To be fair, they offered to lend me the rental gear for free instead. The bouldering section spans a small wall that seems like an afterthought. There are bouldering routes set under the top-roping, which adds to the number of routes, but they are in a precarious position and often run into other rope routes. The setting is laughable. There are routes from three months ago still up.This lack of novelty wouldnt be a problem if the problems were creative, interesting, or fun. They are not. The challenge is added by making the holds worse and the reaches longer. There is little flow to the problems and there seems to be a lack of logic.I am not that into top roping but I did send a few. The ropes seemed old but in good condition. They loan out ATCs but allow you to use your own equipment. The setting is also illogical and arbitrary. It is again not interesting.Instead of GoVertical, this gym should be called GoSomewhereElse.
Cheap, friendly, tons of climbing options for all levels of experience.
Awesome gym for long lead and endurance routes nicely set!
Friendly staff, inexpensive, will go again!
Great trial option for even amazing little kids willing to climb high. The staff was friendly and considerate, but parking was bad.
Great for top roping. Ratings are harder than marked.
I had so much fun rock climbing
So fun!!! Great customer service
Bouldering was ok. I didnt get the chance to TR any routes there as I was just visiting while on vacation. But the bouldering problems were good except they keep them all very low. I dont like highball stuff by any means. But I still felt they could have added a few more feet to some of the boulder problems. The floor is old and flipping up in places and it hot and muggy and a little stinky.
Great staff! Fun!
The ratings are a bit off but they offer enough of each grade to keep you busy all day.
Huge gym, great staff. Plenty of challenges for all levels.
Great community, always changing courses, and good hours.
Well established routes throughout the entire gym.
Great place to climb walls!
So much fun.
Great gym with tons of walls.
Friendly staff, long routes, huge facility. No complaints.
Favorite climbing gym Ive ever been to
Awesome gym and awesome staff
Only gym in the area with good top rope and lead climbing. It is mostly an adult member gym.
Great gym. Variety of bouldering, top roping and lead climbing problems.
Awesome climbing here
Great fun even for a beginner
It was fun to do and challenging at the same time with different pathways to take with difficulty ratings corresponding its color
It was ok, nice people
Dirty place. Unhelpful staff.
I like the variety of obstacles you have here
Really small space, even smaller bouldering section.
Very good
Friendly staff and lots of climbing
Worst setting and gym quality in Philadelphia.
Nice people
Harrison is the man
How much is it
Good
Climbs, climbs, climbs
