Got a cut from Mike. He was recommended by a friend, but did not live up to expectations. I personally think he has no scissor game. Looking at other reviews, which I checked before coming makes me believe that he mostly cuts people with straight hair, or people that like to keep their hair short.I have curly/wavy hair and keep it long in a combover style cut. I keep the short side of the combover long, and explicitly told him I wanted to keep most of that length. Also explained I wanted an undercut on both sides. I barely kept my cool when he took the buzzer to the side of the combover I was explicit about. That was the first notion that led to my conclusion about his scissor game being poor. You just dont use the buzzer on long hair. You need to use scissors or it doesnt come out even. He ended up spending 20 minutes on the ski fade, which wasnt bad, but it went up way too high and he clearly didnt know how to blend it with longer hair. He then spent 2 minutes chopping some length off the top. The scissor work on top shows no sign of understanding wavy or curly hair. He cut it as if I had straight hair.I never write reviews, and originally wasnt going to, but everyday I style my hair I just get mad about my experience. If you have long hair that you like in a particular fashion, I wouldnt suggest going to Mike. Not a bad guy, but hes no more than a guy who will do his best on your skin fade to make up for wherever else he lacks.

This guy Mike Vostok over there is a character. Not only will you get a great haircut youll also get a show lol. Everything is on point with him, very attentive, pays attention to detail, does what you ask him instead of doing his thing and then telling you why its best for you (like other barbers do). Overall a great experience, he just got a new regular customer.

Im always nervous about trying new barbers, but these guys are top notch. I went here because my usual barber was too far away and I needed a convenient cut. Turned out to be the best decision. Everyone greets you with a smile, there is no trash talking sexist conversation, no profanity and rap music, and the haircuts are superb. I kept raising my eyebrows going wow. My own haircut was the executive short and I was most pleased. I have not smiled this much at a barber in a while. Thanks to Mike for his friendly, welcoming demeanor, and skillful hands. Finally found a great barbershop! Went and saw Mike by a recommendation from a friend, was almost no wait and he was great. Knows his styles and was great about recommending what style would work for me based on my face shape/look. So many times I go to a barber and they just ask what I want and give no suggestions at all, but not here. If youre looking for a great cut this is definitely the spot to go.

Took a chance on this place and glad I did, the experience was great. Nadia took her time and really made sure my fade was right, the cut took around 45 minutes and that was reassuring because she had attention to detail. Place did a decent job at cutting my hair. My barber was very talkative and took over an hour. Ive used other barbers that have given me the same or better haircuts in less than 20 minutes. I wont go back, just because Im not patient and I dont like to talk to barbers. If thats not you, youll definitely get a great haircut.

This is a bad place! I experienced extreme racism here by the shops owner, which was witnessed by other customers (it made them very uncomfortable and they even tried to speak up for me- nice white male gentlemen of our great city). Whats saddest is, I used to get my haircut here bi-weekly years ago (I only stopped because I moved away for four years). The owner was nice back then as we often chatted about his kids and family, looks like he forgot who I was and wasnt interested in trying to remember... I always tipped at least 30-40 percent and I was always respectful. Its so sad! :(I want to say thanks to those guys who tried to look out for me!For the shops owner, you have a bad reputation as word as gotten around about how youve tried to prevent other barber shops from setting up shop in the area by calling the city on them for petty issues such as signage!

Just moved to the area and was looking for a barber. I’m mixed (black and white) so my hair is Curley, kind of thick, and needs a specific type of attention depending on the barber. Nadia understood this with limited input and adjusted accordingly. Got a high and tight skin fade. Nadia just knew what I needed. Very quick and friendly service. And for that, giving a 5 star.

Mike is an absolute champion and a hair cutting pro. A bit more expensive than your old school barber shop but worth every penny. 100% recommend for haircuts and beard trims!

After my barber retired, I tried a lot of different barbershops. After each haircut I found that I would have to borrow the barbers comb to put my part back where it belonged. It was either up too high, down too low or didnt exist at all anymore. It was very frustrating. About a year ago I went to Big Apple and Igor (hes the best) left my part where it was and gave me a very well done,unhurried, professional haircut. Ive been a loyal customer ever since. I very much recommend Big Apple Barber Shop!

I have been going to see Igor for a couple of years now and I can say I am truly happy with the service. I am very particular with my haircuts and being able to sit down in a chair and not having to stress about my haircut is very important. Igor takes care of me every time I visit(every 2 weeks) and I never have to worry about anything. Highly recommended!

I have been going to Big Apple Barbershop for almost 3 years now and the haircuts I have received have met and exceeded my expectations. I usually book appointments with Igor because he does a great job with fades and listens exactly to what I want but I have also received great haircuts from Nadia and Mike because they take their time, focus on the small details and do not rush you out of the chair.

Terrible service, clunky website, and ever-increasing prices for deteriorating quality.As a quick background, I’ve been going there ever couple of months since the summer of 2017 when I first moved to East village, but in the past two years the place has only gone downhill. For one thing, their reservation system is totally useless. I’ve tried placing reservations by calling, by using their online platform, and by dropping by in person a day or a week before. However, every time without fail, I have had to wait for at least 10 minutes despite arriving promptly at the pre-scheduled time. I am now under the impression that they basically just ignore their reservations and take people on a first come, first serve basis regardless of whether someone had bothered to schedule a slot ahead of time. If you don’t mind waiting, this is no problem, but the waiting area is also subpar, comprising of tiny benches and cramped seating. Not a good place to spend time.They’ve also stopped taking credit cards since moving to their new location, and they blatantly lied to me about the fact that their atm machine CHARGES A FEE. During a recent visit, I expected to pay with my card as I had done for the past two years, but upon learning they no longer accept credit (a fact that was NOT disclosed on their website or when I called), I found myself short of cash. They rudely directly me to the atm machine in the corner, and when I asked, hurriedly told me it is fee-free. Lo and behold, I now find myself with a $10 charge for an “atm withdrawal” corresponding with the date of my visit, adding on to the already-pricey $30+ cost of a simple men’s trim haircut.The location is also very unreliable; I’ve tried to schedule appointments only to find them closed at random times, or else half staffed. They blast TV and radio at high volumes at all times of the day, and I’ve found that it’s difficult to communicate your preferences regarding *your* haircut as a result.Overall, after experiencing rising prices, deteriorating service, and a hostile environment, I will be going to one of the other barbershops in the area, one with better services and better prices. I suggest “on the mark” barbershop at 350 East 13th - ask for Roman.

Thank you for the haircut. It was very professional. One thing that would make the atmosphere more family friendly is if you would make sure the show/movie being played on the several TVs right in front of customers wasnt sexually explicit. Its a barber shop, please keep it that way.

The cut was quite successful and the price rather affordable ($ 25 + tips). I only regret the wait. I had made an appointment via the online platform but the hairdresser was not there that day. I waited almost 2 hours to get my hair done ... I would have liked to have been warned.
