Tl;dr cash-only and cheap at $20 for a cut; Nick is a seasoned barber with a great story, but cut my hair short without asking me. Good haircut still.___When I first walked into Ginos, I thought I had stepped into a classic film noir.Ginos is a little hole-in-the-wall barber shop, seemingly emerging from the crevice between two larger stores. I missed it the first time I walked by it and had to double back. As I mounted its weathered steps, two things caught my eye: first, the open front door; and second, the man standing just inside. He had his back to me, leaning on one of the two barbers chairs, glued to SyFy on the TV across the room. One of the hands gripping the seat had a cigarette perched lazily between the fingers, a single tenuous line of smoke curling up toward the ceiling.I stopped just shy of the threshold and rapped on the doorjamb of the open door, casting a long shadow. Is this Ginos? I called tentatively toward the unmoving figure, illuminated in sharp relief by the razor rays of the sun shooting through the doorway.Without turning, he said quietly, You Bryan?Yes, I replied.Come on in, he affirmed.Nick is a gnarled man, a hewn tree trunk thats weathered more than you could ever know in its long years. He seems to come from a generation long forgotten, where toughness was king and anyone claiming to be offended needed a strong dose of bitter medicine. The kind who gives short shrift to the latest fads and trends, the way a massive rock face stands impassive as the generations come and go.As we talked, I offered up querulous quips about the weather, my hair, the city. Nick took a minute to respond, seeming to dole out his spare words with gruff reluctance. He softened, though, when I asked the golden question: How long have you been cutting hair?60 years, came the answer, with a hint of clear pride -- he started cutting hair at age 14, when his pop owned the shop (whose footsteps hes followed in). He was cutting hair when the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., marched the streets of Birmingham; when the Commies had schoolkids cowering under their desks, awaiting imminent destruction; when President Nixon declared infamously, I am not a crook! Somehow, I picture him coolly cutting hair while dire declarations cut through the radios static, while TVs talking heads cried doomsday first in black and white, then in color. As Nick and I chatted, his practiced hands automatically cut, snipped, buzzed away my hair. His eyes only dipped from the TV to glance at my head occasionally, checking on his progress. Before long, the hair on the sides of my head was buzzed away. What can I say -- Ive been on the undercut bandwagon for years. When Nick took the scissors to the top of my head, though, I blinked. I hadnt told him what to do there. How much are you taking off the top? I asked, unsure. Oh, just a couple inches, came the nonchalant reply.See, the problem with young men these days is their hairs just too long, Nick grouched as only an old man can. If your hair was a little shorter, you wouldnt have any issues with it.Ive made it a practice not to argue with anyone holding sharp objects in the vicinity of my head, and so I remained mute as this scissors-wielding septuagenarian remade my haircut in his image. Besides, after the very first snip of the shears, I realized there was no backing out now.By the end of the haircut, I eyed myself sidelong in the mirror and wasnt wholly displeased by what I saw. Nick wasnt joking about his feelings on long hair -- he had left my hair shorter than Id cut it in years. But it wasnt a bad look. It just could have been better.Relieved yet flustered, I thanked Nick for his services and fled, nearly forgetting to pay. He sharply called me back, but wouldnt accept my proffered debit card. Cash only, he stated. Leaving my jacket by way of token, I rushed to the ATM to grab a $20. I returned to the shop, handed him the money, stammered out a thank you, and promised to give him a good review. Hope this was a good one, Nick.

Great guy, great decor, great reading material (wink), and most importantly, great haircut. Skip Buzzcuts, Supercuts, or anything of that ilk and just make a beeline for Nick at Ginos. You wont be sorry.
Just moved to Hoboken from Mass and unsure where to get a cut. Went to to ginos and it was exactly the barber shop I was looking for and even finished with a shave around the kneck. I will be going there again.
