The tour was a bit slow, but still interesting and informative. Panning for gold was a cool experience, and I loved exploring the Gold Dredge 8. Its such an incredible piece of machinery. I appreciated that very few places were roped off, so it felt less like a museum and more like it could start back up at any moment.
Very helpful crew when we are panning for gold. We were having a bit of a hard time and the conductor Earl came over and offered to assist us. Tour was very informative.
Felt Rushed. Train ride is very short and when you start panning you can tell that you are being rushed. The majority of people on our tour were still trying to see the dredge and view the shops but we are all rushed to board and leave. We did not have any time to do anything besides weigh the gold we found and pan. The site also appears to be under construction and we had to actually drive from the pipeline brief to the train. We stilled payed a pretty hefty full price of entrance as well. Overall it was not worth the money.
Had a great visit. The associates are great! Emma managed a broken down tour bus with humor and finesse. Highly recommend this attraction.
Short train ride to the dredge. Gold panning and you can walk the dredge. Lots of history. Great tour.
Had a wonderful time here. Theres a mini train to take you to the Gold Dredge #8 and show the history of gold mining. The Dedge #8 is amazing. Crazy what people will build and do to get gold. Afterwards pan for gold - everyones a winner, guaranteed. And then pay extra to get your gold flakes turned into a broach to wear afterwards :-)
Fun experience. Knowledgeable narrator and others. Had fun planning for gold. Lots of good, friendly people here.
That was fun panning for gold! The staff was great! So were the cookies!
Very fun and entertaining experience, educational and you get to keep the gold. Cant wait until the grandkids come up to experience it.
So informative! A history lesson wrapped up in fun!
We had a great time. Found $51 of gold
Great people and very friendly, Earl plays the best music.
Really nice folks and fun family experience panning for gold
Highly recommended by our RV hosts, and were so glad we went! Much bigger operation than we expected and way more exciting. Enjoyed our open air train ride with live narration, then got to walk through the boat and see all the equipment on the grounds. The gift shop was huge and the free hot chocolate and cookies were a very pleasant surprise. Tons of souvenirs covering everything related to Alaska available.Panning for gold was the best part, I must say. We knew the bags were spiked with gold but it was still fun to find it at the bottom. Great experience!
My favorite activity on our trip to Fairbanks! The staff is very knowledgeable. Be sure to dress for the weather as you will be outdoors most of the time. My fiance and I put our gold together into a necklace. Also there were free cookies and warm beverages at the end of the tour! We got quite a few souvenirs as well.
Took our students out here for a field trip and absolutely loved it. Very informative and very engaging. The whole crew made it a great experience for the students. Even our younger ones were fully engaged and enjoying it.Definitely an experience that everyone should try.
I liked it. The panning is cool but its got to be staged. Im fairly certain they reuse the stuff in the troughs and just add some flakes to it. All of the gold flakes I saw were uniform in size. Its still a good experience! Cheapest cans of pop you will find too!
This was so much fun! Lots of very friendly and helpful staff ready and able to answer any questions you may have. We went with a small group and had tons of fun. Panning for gold was a great experience. Our tour was a couple hours long. Very informative and interesting. Purchase tickets in advance or call ahead for dates and times is HIGHLY recommended.
This was quite fun. I was amazed at how many people theyre able to accommodate at one time. We were the 10th bus to arrive but it never felt disorganized or too crowded. Our guide was very knowledgeable. I enjoyed it all - the view of the pipeline, the train ride and the self tour of the dredge. Between the 5 of us in my party, we panned almost $80 worth of gold!
We loved it!
Had the best time with 15 family members. Everybody found gold and is now wearing their bounty around their neck in a beautiful see-through glass pendant. The man that sings in the beginning of the train ride and at the end made the train ride even better. I would do this again.
Great tour and demonstration of how gold was mined in the area. Panning hands on was a lot of fun (and you will find gold). Shops were great, and combined a lot of mining artifacts, plus mammoth fossils as well from the area. There was no hard sell on gifts, and plenty of snacks and drinks were provided for free. Restrooms were very clean. Pipeline tour was also great, very informative. Loved it!
Great experience for all. Kids would love this, they get to Gold Pan and walk around a dredge and a train ride. The people working here are great ! You also get to see the Alaskan pipeline.
Very fun for visitors and even living here I enjoy the history. Planning for gold is not easy! Beautiful views and it definitely teaches you the history of the gold rush in Alaska. We have very valuable land and people from all over the world have settled here. Pretty amazing. Great tour and awesome staff. The same presenters I saw 7 years ago.
Panning for gold we found $37 worth. Had the treasure made into a neckless and matching earrings. Excellent for gifts. Friendly staff and tour of Dredger 8 and surroundings buildings. The train ride was a informative history of gold mining. Well worth a stop.
Lot of people at the start but once you get going it was great! Very informational (not boring though). You get a chance to pan for gold and climb on the dredge! Super friendly staff, cookies were excellent too!
This is a fun, family tourist trap. I highly recommend it. The train ride is fun and educational. Panning for gold was fun especially since you know you have some in your bag. You never know how much is put back into the water as you pan, but our family found between $15 and $32 worth of gold in our pans. It was fun having the gold made into a necklace and a tie tack. One son decided just to bring his gold home in the little film size canister.
The place is worth a visit to see what the gold rush years were like in Alaska. The people who interact with the visitors are knowledgeable and friendly. The pipe line runs next to the location. The pipe line information and its impact on Alaska for the good things it brought to the economy. It is worth a visit to the place where they have a huge gift shop.
Fun train ride on historic site, nice way to show history of gold dredging in area. Then we got to pan for gold. While I personally didnt do well, some found up to $25.00 worth of gold. Then, of course, they had to try to sell you jewelry to put it in. Gift shop was quaint, in all old warehouse, but disappointing, in that most of the merchandise was from China. Still, all in all, a great experience, and worth the time.
Unfortunately, it was raining. However the main guide did the Alaskan pipeline presentation on the trolley under a roof. Very good overview. Panning was interesting. Help was a available. Free cooking were delicious.
Wonderful experience at the gold dredge 8. Your first educated on the pipeline, board a small train with some entertainment, learn about the dredge, learn how to pan for gold. Afterwards, you pan for your own gold, in which you keep whatever youre left with. You may either keep the gold as a souvenir, or gave made into jewelry.
Interesting, knowledgeable experience. It’s a one time thing. I don’t think I would do it again but I definitely learned a lot. So if you have the money, do it.
Great fun place to do hands on gold panning. You will find gold flakes guaranteed. If you dont get many, just tell staff and they will give you another bag to pan. You can take your gold and buy a nice jewelry item to display it. Fun keepsake to remember a nice experience from Alaska.
Excellent tour. Excellent story telling. The staff, stories and seeing all the equipment from years ago. You learn how very hard it was to pan for gold. The staff make the tour, all were engaging, pleasant and helpful. If you dont enjoy history storytelling, dont bother with this tour. But if do then this tour is for you
I went with my family and had a lot of fun learning about the history of gold mining in Alaska and about the Alyeska Pipeline. Each of us got a bag of dirt with which we panned for gold. We all found gold with the help of Ethan, without him we wouldn’t have gotten anything, so thank you! It was a great time for all ages. We decided to put all the gold together in a necklace. Good fun!
Fun trip. Lots of information, free home made cookies and coffee and of course gold panning. My wife and I both bought an extra bag of concentrate and it more than paid for itself. We found $96 dollars worth of gold together which paid for half the trip in a way.Do yourself a favor and buy 1 or 2 extra bags right at the start so you can pan it all at once.
Fun time! Great place in Alaska to get a feel for a gold mining. You pan gold and get anywhere from $10-$21 in gold!!Great experience. Store though was a bit overpriced for the tourists!
Great staff! Interesting Alaska History...and, we found $21.00 of gold. Train ride & historical story alone was worth the trip! By the way, you walk under the Alaska Pipeline to enter the area! Wow!
Don’t miss this tour. It’s so much fun to know about gold digging and to pan gold yourself. I still have the gold nuggets that we pan, with me. Great memory!
Great exhibits. This thing is huge. Our tour guide was a guy who teaches history in a high school in Fairbanks. So he knew his stuff. He was like Jamie from Mythbusters, but not as scary. They have a gold panning deal and they do the jewelry thing with it. But its not the hard sell and the stuff they have is nice and not the typical rip off prices. Most jewelry in Alaska tourist areas is a total scam, but not this place.
Very fascinating tour. They had competent, knowledgeable guides who provided an insightful glimpse into the history of the Fairbanks area. It was very educational.
Really well done experience. Panning for gold was both fun and well organized. Walking through the old dredging machine was super cool (it is a marvel of 1920s engineering). Seeing the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline up close is also a valuable part of this visit.
Very fun experience, we had a tour that combined the Gold Dredge 8 and the Riverboat and we liked both activities. We thought it was a relaxing and fun way to spend our day in Fairbanks and recommend to anyone who wants to have a nice relaxing day. You get to keep the Gold that you find which is a nice added bonus but be careful they will want to sell you some nice jewelry to put that gold in and you will lose all that money you found.
This was something my family and I did to fill the time waiting for a flight from Fairbanks, so my expectations were low. I was wrong. The entire experience was very enjoyable and informative. We got to see the Alaskan oil pipeline, take a short train ride, pan for gold (and got some!) and see and learn about the history of gold mining in Alaska. The staff was very friendly and the place was well run. Overall, a very enjoyable experience.
Extremely informative. Excellent guide. Enthusiastic and personable demonstrators. You actually pan anywhere from $8 to $25 worth of real honest to goodness GOLD flakes. You can cash it in, take your cashe home with you or purchase a charm and display your Alaskan hold strike on you wifes charm bracelet.
Amazing place. Lots of learning abt history of gold panning. You get a chance to pan gold yourself and you are guaranteed to find gold. Fun tour for abt 2 hours. Fun for the whole family. And coffee and cookies were cherry on the top.
What a great place to enjoy planning for gold. You also get a lot of Alaska History there. We actually found gold.when we where panning. We were looking for nuggets but only found flakes. But we did find gold. You need to plan to go there.
Educational experience understanding the gold dredging process and the effect on the local environment. However we did some gold panning and the wife found 14 pieces of gold to my 4 so one very happy 😊 bunny.Good and thought provoking tour.
This was a great experience, we had a tour that combined the Gold Dredge 8 and the Riverboat and we liked both activities. Both were very educational and well planned tours. Thanks to the wonderful group of hard working folks that gave the tour. It was a fun way to spend our time in Fairbanks and recommend to anyone who wants pan for gold, learn about the culture of Alaska.Howdy Yall from Texas!
For those visiting Alaska this is a fun place to visit. Learn some history of gold mining and pan for gold. They will teach you everything you need to know. Kids have a blast as playing in the dirt is just plain fun!
Interesting and fun for all. 10 year old loved gold panning. Includes a train ride and guided tour. The oil pipe line crosses over the mine site and the tour includes this as well.
We had lots of fun. Learned to pan for gold. I found $22 worth of gold flakes and had them put into a charm. Plus cookies were yummy
Great excursion! Very informative about the Alaska Pipeline, the history and different processes of gold mining. You get to pan for gold and have it set in jewelry if you like. Great gift shop and free giant cookies!
Loved the tour. Loved the gold panning. Fun and friendly staff topped off with complimentary cookies and hot chocolate! A great experience with a little Alaska history.
The tour is on an old train tracks. The address system is not working properly so it was hard to get a good idea of what you are looking for. They let you pan for gold which is interesting. The different ways of mining gold is illustrated.
I believe everyone got gold. But cost more than the worth of the gold to put in the cheapest memento. Part of the tour and great fun for many.
What a fun outing for the day! The staff were all congenial. We enjoyed learning how to pan for gold.
Had a fantastic time seeing the Trans Alaskan pipeline, and panning for gold! The tour was full of history pertaining to the environment, equipment, and the lives of the individuals that worked the dredge. I was able to board the old dredge that still floats to this day. The tour came with free food and beverage. If you enjoy a leasurly tour, and learning about history while trying your hands at panning for gold like thousands of miners did back in the day, this tour is for you.
Lots of fun ! My husband really loved it. Being in the place where they really did the gold . Very interesting!
Well organized tourist experience. You get a history lesson about gold mining on a train, to try your hand at panning for gold, and a reasonably priced and extensive gift shop where you can get a free cookie and hot drink. Theres a bit at the beginning with detail on the Alaska pipeline down to how the distributions work. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful.
Had a blast panning for gold! Full of information on the train ride in and lots to look at while you are there.
Awesome. Fiddle played live on the train ride. Excellent viewing of the gold mining operation. Took the opportunity to pan for gold and got $12 in gold flakes and my wife got $30.
What a fun experience! So much history here and very nice people who are very connected to Alaska and obviously care about tourists and their experiences. Fun to learn how to pan for real gold!
Liked it more than I expected. Great instructors teach you hands-on how to pan for gold. They provide free coffee and hot chocolate plus cookies at the gift store; but they keep you there too long in order to encourage spending.
