I love companion!!! I recently moved to Chicago and wasn’t sure where to take my puppy, but followed the other positive Google reviews. I’m so glad I did! The vets and vet techs are great. They’re very thorough and upfront about testing if your pet gets sick. Every staff member I’ve spoken with over the phone or at the front desk has been wonderful and so compassionate. But what’s made my experience with them the best is my experience with dog trainer extraordinaire, Charmaine. Charmaine works as a team with the vets to provide holistic and thorough training. After my move, my puppy was very anxious when I would leave the house. He would whine and it got to the point, I was worried my neighbors would complain or I’d never be able to leave my house. Working with Charmaine and the many recommendations she’s fine tuned through 20 years of experience in the field has helped my dog feel more comfortable when I leave. He’s been much calmer when I leave and the best part, he doesn’t whine loudly when I step out the door. We’re still working on making him comfortable and I appreciate that Charmaine doesn’t make you buy a package or certain number of classes. Instead, she tailors the training to your specific dog’s needs through online or in person sessions. Her help with my dog’s anxiety was so effective that we’re now working on getting him prepared to fly in-cabin in his carrier with low stress. I can’t recommend her enough! And finally, I love the daycare at companion. It’s helped my puppy be excited to go into the vet’s office and he always leaves in a great mood (but also, thankfully, tired and played out!). I really can’t say enough positive things about this practice. Thank you, Companion! 😊

I live in the neighborhood and wanted to try Companion animal hospital for our new puppy. This review is focused on the unethical business practices and invoices. After the visit which included the technician and doctor I expected to proceed back to reception and receive and itemized printout of all the services and then pay for it.Instead I was kept in the examination room with my shaking dog who wanted to go home. The technician did NOT provide the printout or even go over what I am paying for. Just simply said todays visit is $250. I wanted to get my dog home as soon as possible and did not have time to think. When I got home, I called the companion hospital to enquirer about the cost. They said that they will email the invoice and it usually gets emailed automatically (which was not the case). When I did receive the email with the receipt it contained a number of items which I did not ask for.Ultimately it is unethical and illegal not to provide the bill of sale to customers and go over the services. Please do better.

We came in for an evaluation appointment with our puppy. The plan was to do a basic examination and check his ears. He had already had the initial vaccine done by the breeder and we had the vaccination plan worked out.The problems started happening once we entered the examination room. The table cover on the examination table was filthy and covered by debris. It was hard to tell if the debris was animal feces, or other animal byproducts. I took one look at it and immediately did not feel comfortable. We had mentioned this to the technician; she then tried to scrape off the chunks of material sticking to the table cover but was unsuccessful. Instead of replacing the table covering with a clean and sterile material they proceeded to use this filthy cover (g-d only knows what was on it).The next person to enter was, Dr. Rachel Courville accompanied by the technician. Neither one of them washed their hands or used any hand sanitizer. The doctor proceeded to examine our puppy and was no thorough with the examination; it appeared to be a very quick procedure. The biggest problem from this visit is what happened next. The doctor told us that we must give our puppy a vaccine for: Bordetella. She did not provide any information whatsoever as to why? Why does an 8 week puppy who will be staying at home for quite a while require a vaccine against Bordetella? This information was never provided; the side effects were never discussed with us. The doctor then proceeded to administer the Bordetella vaccine. The Bordetella vaccine is not a core vaccination product and will delay the vaccination schedule in general for our puppy.Upon further research and speaking with a different veterinarian who specializes in dogs from a different facility (NOT Companion Medical River North), we had learned that the Bordetella vaccine is ONLY for dogs who will be staying at dog care centers, participating in competitions or active in dog parks. NONE of these activities pertain to our puppy! From an ethical standpoint none of the above reasons were discussed with us by Dr. Rachel Courville. Our puppy was put at risk, for no reason whatsoever and we had delayed the core vaccination schedule. All of this could have been avoided had the Veterinarian discussed this with us and informed us of the reasons behind the Bordetella vaccine. We would have definitely said NO.The entire experience felt unprofessional, unhygienic and unethical. It is my opinion that Companion Animal Hospital should be avoided.

My terrier is terrified of vets and has to be sedated to be handled or groomed, which is a source of great anxiety for me (and him, of course). After a couple negative, expensive experiences with our last vet, I decided on Companion River North for its great reviews, which turned out to be accurate. They listened to my detailed concerns and made me feel more comfortable than any other vet has, and got everything done that was needed. The resulting bill was also hundreds of dollars cheaper than the previous vet. Thank you so much, Companion River North, for listening to me and taking care of my difficult beast.

My dog’s normal vet unfortunately moved away, so I had to find a new vet for my dog. He had a large growth in his mouth, so I was trying to find a vet that would take him as soon as possible because the emergency 24/7 vet wouldn’t take him. I was referred to this animal hospital and they couldn’t have been nicer. From the person who took the appointment, to the woman who walked us out after my dog’s appointment. I highly, highly recommend this animal hospital. They took such wonderful care of my dog and were very nice. They understand that your pet is your baby, but understand that people have a budget. Everybody here are definitely animal people. As a dog mom, I felt like I was able to trust them with my dog, which isn’t always easy! 10/10.

Max got her nails cut, a thorough exam, and pain medication all for a reasonable price!I can’t thank them enough!

If you have a nervous dog like mine (adopted from an animal control and seems to have PTSD according to my trainer), you should tell them you dont want Brandon as the technician.Ive been going here for a while and most recently 3 weeks ago. Only this time he is too nervous according to Brandon and we are forced some anti-anxiety pills and our original appointment was cancelled no matter how I tell him hes always been like this and there was never any problem.Using 3 weeks ago he behaved exactly the same, and the technician just held him and let him lick peanut butter for the whole process and he calmed down very quickly. This time, however, Brandon only fed him one small cookie and declared him too nervous because he barked at him as he stood up.I really want to give it a 1 star, but for the sake of the previous positive experiences I didnt.

She got right back to me and said we can get her in ASAP! I was truly hoping to get her in the next day or two! In this pandemic world so hard to get vet appointments! My pup is timid with new people and they are so gentle and caring with her. We now attend the dog daycare, the staff will send texts and photos throughout the day. You can get updates whenever you need or want one. We just spoke with the trainer they work with, Charmaine, who is absolutely lovely. Can’t wait to work with her! They have a number of group training classes and puppy socials (officially by Tucker Pup’s Pet club) in the daycare upstairs as well. Finally, their prices are fair and competitive for quality care and service (which is always great to find in the city!). I truly appreciate this clinic and I HIGHLY recommend Companion!

A lot of great reviews and have to give them credit for being really nice to our puppy and giving her back to us happy. But man, are they terrible at communication with the humans. For starters, everything is such an upsell. You go in for one thing and you walk out having paid for 6 things. Second, communication between the vets/tech to the front office who bill and check you out is awful - significant details are always lost in transalation. For example, we were being charged for an anxiety drug we did not need nor ask for, but turns out it was the wrong medication and needed to be changed. Then there was the time we communicated our moving out of state schedule to them and asked to help us schedule a spay in time for our puppy to heal and were not properly informed of procedures that need to occur prior to the surgery. Now because they failed to mention key information we are now having to pay $150 more than the expected price. So they are fine to use - just be prepared for fairly poor communication and to be sold 5 other things.

First, I would like to state every person I encountered was friendly and knowledgeable. Unfortunately a tech gave me the incorrect information and it cost me more than I expected.I have a dog who has regular ear infections. For my first appointment, I asked for a prescription for a $20 medication (available on Chewy) I have used for years. I was told that product was not recommended, and I should go with their method. Of course, they did not mention their method was $140. I was told I would not need to pay for an exam fee for the follow up appointment, but that ended up being a miscommunication on their part and an additional $78 for me to pay. I was told the doctor checked my dog over completely, and that was the need for the $78 fee. That was not the case at all. The doctor asked me if there were any concerns on my part, or a need to do additional work on the dog and I said no. Furthermore, their method to treat ear infections did not work - so I had to pay an additional $140. $280 for an ear infection, and they asked me to reschedule the appointment to check back in 2 weeks (another $140). I wish they would have given me the prescription. In reading the reviews below I see another individual had a similar experience. Again, very nice people and the goal is for my dog to not have an ear infection and to be healthy. I just feel like I was lied to from my first appointment to my second, and I just don’t want to feel that way again. I would not recommend this establishment to my friends who own pets.

The technical care seemed quite good at the Hyde Park locations, but emailing, and calling apparently werent modes of communication that were consistently getting a response. Part of this is apparently due to their level of busy-ness, but some aspect of their administration also seems problematic. We recently moved to the Chicago area and didn’t have a vet when our dog became sick. We did an online search and found the Companion Animal Hospital and we chose them because of their incredibly positive reviews. Our experience was definitely worthy of five stars! Dr Schnitker and the staff are caring, kind and very professional. We consider ourselves lucky to have found such an amazing vet in our neighborhood.

Dr. Archer evaluated my bearded dragon yesterday. She spent the time to explain everything to me and educate me about his condition and treatment. She answered my questions thoroughly and was very knowledgeable about bearded dragons. I think the team and support staff handled the curbside drop-off well during COVID precautions.

I went to Companion Animal Hospital for the first time yesterday. All of the staff were so wonderful with my shy cat. They were attentive, patient, and so caring. Plus they were very thorough going over my cats treatment plan, information regarding their recommendations, and medications. The facility was clean with an inviting environment. So happy I found this place!

We just moved to Chicago and were looking for a new vet. These people had great reviews so we tried them. Needless to say the vet was wonderful. They do not try to push procedures or up sell. She was very knowledgeable and caring. Just the type of people we were looking for. We are definitely there customer.

I adopted my 12 year old cat, Binx, on September 24th. He seemed fine, until I realized he had discharge coming from his eyes and had been sneezing. So I started looking for local vets, and realized the wait times were absurd especially because I was concerned he might have an upper respiratory infection. Well, Im glad Companion took a look because the vet suggested he may have something far worse then I initially thought which would mean the poor guy was with another owner for 12 years, the owner died, and I took him from the shelter just to get a grim prognosis. If it is what Im scared it is Im glad I know to hope for the best but expect the worst and make him comfortable. Im scared I wouldve known too late if Id had to wait two weeks for another clinic just to book an appointment and am genuinely grateful for the kind, courteous, timely, service Binx and I received. Dr.Schnitker took the time to be open and honest with me but did so in a very gentle way when I received news I hadnt anticipated. The staff is friendly and my first impression was a good one.

We really like Companion AH RN. We changed Vets out of convenience when this location opened. Very friendly staff and Dr.s. I feel like they genuinely care about our Pets well being. They call us the day after any visit we make for obvious illness or health concern to inquire how our Pet is doing. Reasonably priced and I dont walk out feeling like Ive been oversold or pressured to buy anything (medication, tests, etc.) I dont actually need for my Dog.

First trip there. The vet and assistance were very helpful, and I had great luck with my 2 year old labrador retriever. However, they ran a stool sample without my authorization and could only reverse part of the cost, so I was charged $30-40 because of an assumption that was made on their end. I would never expect an organization to take action and charge me for something that was not explicitly agreed to. I would expect them to tell me not only what they are planning to do with the sample, but also how much it will cost me, to at least get verbal authorization before moving forward. I will give them another try because I was happy with their in-office care and this seems like an exception, but I wasnt thrilled with the outcome here.

Everyone was super friendly and the vet, Dr. Bohaty, was very thorough and knowledgeable. She and her assistant were so gentle and kind with my dog. I would highly recommend this facility.

I brought my cat in for emergency surgery for a bladder stone blocking his urinary track. I cant thank all the staff enough for their truly exceptional care - from the diagnosis, treatment, surgery and navigating it all over the phone (no owners were allowed in due to Covid). I was so impressed with their competent caring staff. The surgeon even stayed with him after hours while he came off anesthesia and was prepared to take him home to monitor if he took longer to recover. I hope its many years before I need to come back but I would choose them again in a hearbeat.

We always had the best time with this clinic. I wish we could have taken the team with us when we moved to a new state. From the time I had a tiny 10 week old, 1lb baby poodle mix, until when we moved after he was 1 year old, the staff and veterinarian were perfect.

My friend recommended Companion Animal Hospital River North and I immediately transferred all of my animals over to the veterinarians there. If I had kids, I would want them to go to physicians exactly like these veterinarians. The customer service experience is always outstanding. My pets never appear uncomfortable, the veterinarians and technicians take the time to make them feel very comfortable. I often have silly questions and the staff at Companion Animal Hospital River North have always responded quickly to my emails with detailed answers to my questions. Thank you!

I cant speak highly enough of Companion Animal Hospital. Thinking that our dog had an ear infection and not being able to get in to see our regular vet, CAH squeezed us in right after we called them -- at 3:15 on a Saturday afternoon (they closed at 4:00). They could not have been more caring and pleasant, and they competently and professionally addressed the issue (we saw Dr. Archer; she was wonderful, as was Zach, our tech).

Our experience was quite frustrating to say the least. We recently moved from Canada to Chicago and had to find a vet for our Pomeranian. This clinic insist on Distemper shot for 3 years even though this shot could be given annually. Also, before we even got in for an exam, they were already recommending services. During our first visit, the vet kept pushing several unnecessary treatments and gave us a treatment plan with an estimated cost of $1000. We were taken off guard and felt like we just walked into a sales office. Their prices are slightly higher than other vets and they charge $10 for each visit for medical waste. One thing that they recommended that was useful was heartworm prevention. We moved from an area that does not have heartworm disease and are not knowledgeable about it. We ordered the medication they recommended from chewy.com for a very reasonable price after discounts ($12.20 for 6 months). We also notified them about our purchase of the medication and they said, we will be on a look out for it. When chewy.com sent them the prescription authorization, the clinic declined the prescription advising that our pet is due for an exam (the exam was performed 2 days prior) without calling us to notify us that we need to perform a test first. At that point chewy.com cancelled our prescription and we lost on a very reasonable price for the medication. We called the clinic and they said that the reason they cancelled is because we need to do a blood test first. We get that, but why decline a prescription without calling us first to have us come in for a blood test?! We spoke with the receptionist and the office manager who is new to the practice and unsure of their office processes. We were upset and decided to look for another vet because it seemed that we were getting nowhere with this clinic. Later, the manager called us and told us that if we bring out pet for a blood test, they can match chewy.com price for the heartworm med. We thought about it and decided to give them a second chance. We agreed to take them up on their offer and the response we got is that the best they cannot match the price we got on chewy.com and their price is $24/6 months of heartworm...double the price we paid at chewy.com. Frustrating again...however, we decided to do the blood test because we already wasted a lot of money...They quoted us $67.08 for the blood test +$10 for medical waste. This morning, we went to get the test done and on the phone they tried to change us $101. I questioned the charge and was told that they added a nurse consult to the blood test charge. I was again in shock of their money grabbing practices. What nurse consult were they charging us for? There was no nurse consult....I asked the receptionist to confirm the charges and she checked with the nurse and informed me that the charge was added to my bill in error. What is that all about??!!! Again...disappointed by their practices. Before we even got the blood test results, they pushed us to purchase the heartworm meds. Our conclusion is...it is too much hassle to deal with Companion Animal Hospital River North. Fake charges, unethical office processes, and no respect for peoples time and money is what our experience was all about. We will be looking for a new vet for sure. No doubt in our minds.

Having a dog that is over 13 years old, I have been to several clinics, and I am very selective with the vets I take him to. I can easily say that Companion Animal Hospital has been the best experience I have ever had.A few weeks ago, my dog was very sick and I had to take him in right away. Dr. Schnitker advised that he needed emergency surgery due to a large mass on his spleen. She showed so much compassion during this incredibly stressful surgery, and I know that she saved my dogs life. The recovery process has been difficult for my dog since he is older, and we have had to make multiple trips back to the clinic. Dr. Archer has been the one to help him through and has helped provide relief for both of us. Every time we have gone back in I am so grateful for the staffs understanding and expert guidance. There are a lot of vets in the Loop, but Dr. Schnitker and her team have set the bar so high I will always recommend their services.

We have been bringing our dogs to Dr. Schnitker for a few years now and are so excited for this new clinic. She is incredibly thorough and genuinely passionate about the animals she sees. She spends ample time with examinations and with explaining prognosis to owners. She treats my dogs like theyre her own, and Im not sure a pet owner can ask for much more than that.
