Pros: Lots of different grade routes for top rope and lead, sizable bouldering area, friendly and knowledgeable staff, full workout area with weights and equipment.Cons: As of this post on 9/30/21 they require fully vaccinated members to wear masks all the time, even when doing hard cardio on a treadmill. No other fitness facility that I go to right now has such strict policy. Maybe there are some members who this is actually a selling point, but I do know several who climb here who are annoyed by it enough to consider going elsewhere. Would be more than willing to simply show proof of vaccination, or maybe they could limit such rules for specific masked-only hours like another popular climbing gym in the area does. Really hate saying this because otherwise this would be a solid 5 star review.

Good gym, unfortunately they bring their politics into the business so despite proof of vaccine they still treat you like you’re a diseased enemy. Why push for people to take a vaccine if it doesn’t change anything? My guess is they are more-so appealing to the hipster clientele that tends to dominate climbing gyms. If you can tolerate that stuff than the climbing if good.

I love Earth Treks so much! Ive been going for the last 2-3 years now. I love the community and the facility. the staff are super polite and inclusive. The classes are top-notch in my opinion. The ropes part of the gym is well maintained, the clips, ropes, and belay devices are all in great condition. The certifications are required and you need to take a class for Top Roping, Lead Climbing, and Lead Belaying. Each class is about an hour long and there is a practical application part to each test. For the top-rope belay and climbing test you dont actually belay anybody or climb, you prove that you can catch an unexpected fall. The climbing section you have to show that you can tie a figure-8 follow through knot which is the knot you have to use at all ET branches.10/10 recommendation!!

They are constantly asking for support regarding the “difficulties” they are facing and have even announced a raise to member dues while simultaneously turning their back on vaccinated members to appeal to a small minority of paranoid members. The competitor climbing gym in the area at least has vaccinated and non/vaccinated hours to give equal opportunity to its members.

Really great place, parking is free on weekends and past 4 on week days, employees are friendly and helpful, great climbs, very clean, inviting atmosphere, what more could you ask for? Definitely my favorite climbing spot, recommended for all climbers. There are no autobelays, so the place is much better if you know how to belay, but the test is straightforward and easy, anyone who has belayed will have no problem passing it. All the top-roping routes have great belay devices attached, so no need to bring one unless you plan on lead climbing. The bouldering section is large, has great pads, and lots of diverse boulders. The gym is clean and has all the equipment you would need for a full workout. Highly recommended!!!

Love this place - I’m a relatively olderish, newish climber and they are unfailingly helpful, supportive, encouraging, and welcoming. For the last few months I’ve had a coach, Wendy, and I absolutely can not say enough about her. Her intuition about what to say when, really challenging me to be a better climber while helping me completely value the climber I am today, and the steady stream of solid technical resources and guidance make her an absolute professional who I trust implicitly and just plain enjoy being around. Go there if you have even an inkling of interest!!

I would call this skill-based exercise, excellent to develop hand strength, hand to eye coordination, flexibility and leg strength. Its an interesting change of pace from the standard exercise routines and I would highly recommend trying it and incorporating it into ones exercise repoirtoire for not only fitness but to improve balance and strength in an array of other muscles in ways you normally dont use. Great for young kids as well especially if rock climbing is something they might like to do as sport in the future.

New policies at this Earth Treks have destroyed the experience for a large (specifically over 90%) and particular group. Additionally the gym isn’t particularly salubrious to working out anymore, given said new policies enacted on 8/4/2021. Instead of standing up for what is right and logical, Earth Treks has decided to volunteer and cave to oppressive silliness. I and a great deal of other Earth Trek members and guests will not stand for it. We appreciate health, peace, and clean air. Earth Treks has decided to not focus on these things and listen to the majority of its members and instead has given in to the blind, selfish, and arbitrary whims of the few. Repeal the policy that ruins the Earth Treks experience and I will update my review.

As a climber from NYC, I feel like the day passes are a bit expensive from the standpoint of its $36-40 ($20 if youre a student) for a day pass at gyms like BKB or the Cliffs. $20 is more than I pay when I climb in California. That being said, the facility is huge. Its one of the biggest Ive been in on the east coast. However in my opinion, the membership is very affordable in comparison to NYC ($80-90/month in the DMV area and $119+ in NYC) not to mention you get guest passes which is unheard of in NYC.For the beginner climber they have Vintro climbs instead of V0, which Ive seen here and there but I can appreciate it. However, the climbs here are longer as the walls (even for bouldering) are taller than facilities in NYC. I enjoyed how varied the wall angles were and that there were a bunch of different climbs however there were definitely routes that were misleveled or as my friend would say just rude if you were remotely short (and were the average height for women so thats short for a climber). The ropes area looked like it was mostly grigri and I saw a girl learning how to belay from the staff leveraging a grigri. The staff is nice and helpful. There is a one way route to enter/exit. I did feel like it was annoying that the staff told me I couldnt have my water bottle on the mat due to fall zones despite my water bottle being in a spot away from all the walls (if you could land on it then you had to throw yourself off the wall) but I saw multiple guys carrying much larger water bottles on the mat and they werent lectured at all. If youre going to enforce that be consistent at the very least.

This is a great indoor rock climbing space AND fitness gym. This location also sells rock climbing gear, such as the shoes, harnesses, and even healthy food snacks. Not only that, this facility is also worth noting as being kid-friendly.We visited to celebrate a friends 9yr-old birthday party and all of the kids had a blast scaling the walls made with the right difficulty for their age and size. Moreover, the staff were very down to earth, patient, and attentive to all of the kids and bigger kids in our group. We look forward to to coming back and bringing the kids so they can relive this amazing experience. So, if youre looking for a new activity to do as a single, with a group and or with the kids this is the place to come to. Lastly, Id be remiss if I didnt mention that theres an underground parking garage connected to the building to make this an accessible place as well.

Great climbs, super good variety compared to other individual ET gyms. Only reason it was meh was due to a specific staff member being a bit pushy to us (Since we dont normally climb here). From every other ET gym they usually leave you to your climbing, especially if you have a lead cert and have been climbing for a while like us. I was fairly annoyed about being told to do certain things like a child, and wish we could have been left to climb like we normally do.Still love the other ET gyms though. Ill probably just stick to them instead of visiting this one.

Always have been a fan of Earth Treks. I started climbing about 5 years ago with Columbia, before they remodeled. I fell in love with the workout! Ive been to all of their gyms, even out in Colorado and theyre all pretty nice. Some are dated now but getting better. The staff at every location is stellar, like none other. So friendly and helpful. This location in particularly in Crystal is pretty nice. Its in the basement of an office building, but still rather large inside. They charge a tad more for this location but really I feel youre only paying because of its location. I still prefer Columbia over Crystal but thats not to say they arent a great gym because they are. Theres lead, top rope, and bouldering with a decent regular gym section as well. They change the routes on the wall regularly so you dont get too tired of it. I just went back for my first time since COVID hit and Im quite impressed. They have one way in and one way out of the gym. Everyone is wearing a mask including climbers. The bathrooms are open and theres sanitizer everywhere. The locker and shower areas are closed but thats expected. Theres also a live capacity tracker online and you can make reservations during their busier times (required actually). If you havent been back or never tried, I recommend it.

I love this place. The facility is clean and well taken care of, there are a ton of routes (bouldering, too rope, and lead), they have a nice selection of snacks and drinks, as well as climbing equipment and apparel, but NONE OF IT compares to how incredibly, ridiculously, unrealistically nice and helpful the employees are. Its like they train them in a top secret research facility dedicated to customer service and pleasantness. I honestly dont know how its possible that Ive interacted with at least 10 separate employees and have had memorably positive experiences with every single one. This is in many ways a super climbing gym, with great facilities and instructors. Unfortunately, however, the ventilation in this space is terrible and the amount of chalk suspended in the air was, for me at least, intolerable. After the first time I climbed, I had a searing sore throat in the evening, which I did not initially connect to the gym. The second time I came, the same thing happened again, with the irritation developing almost immediately, and I coughed for days afterwards. I did not go back. I must be more sensitive to the chalk suspended in the air than the average person. But the amount of chalk in the air was so thick on my second visit, you could almost taste it. For any person this cannot be healthy, whether you are sensitive to it or not.I really think this gym should pay more attention to ventilation, for the health of the climbers. I also think the gym should educate climbers on the use of chalk. I see plenty of people dipping constantly into their bag of chalk, creating a big cloud each time they reach in. Perhaps the gym could suggest alternatives. Its a shame as I would have loved to continue with the indoor climbing.

Large, clean, and modern climbing gym with a bit of a yuppie vibe. Walltopia designed walls with pretty interesting routes, although the geometry of the walls in the roped area is slightly less exciting than other gyms in the area. More slabby walls than Sportrock and more total routes. The wall height is only 35-40, quite a bit shorter than the 60-70 at Sportrocks larger bay.Bouldering section is super modern, absolutely massive, and fits right in with how most new gyms are designing their boulder areas. Lots of hard problems in this section.Their fitness area, IMO, is a big selling point. They have all of the traditional machines youd want in a weight lifting gym (squat rack, deadlift platform, cable machines, olympic style bars/weights) plus the moon boards and campus boards for climbing-specific training. Its quite busy, even later at night, but is probably the nicest fitness area of any of the local climbing gyms. The vibe here is really what will make or break the gym for you. If youre like me and generally try to avoid crystal city/clarendon area then you will probably feel more at home at Sportrock where the atmosphere is more chill and the demographic is a little different. If hanging out in Arlington is your scene then you will absolutely love this gym.Lastly, this is a good bit more expensive than Sportrock. $6 more for day pass and almost $30 more for a membership. It has more amenities (nicer showers, the dope fitness area, etc) but if youre on a budget this probably isnt the spot. Overall a really impressive gym that can offer full feature climbing/fitness/weight training for somebody who likes the Arlington vibe.
