Heres the deal, you want a place that at the end of the day the staff is friendly and can actually work with you on issues that come up at every apartment complex. Not the issues that a lot of college students create on their own and expect the staff to fix or credit them back for. Thats what the Grove has. A staff thats willing to help you when you actually need it and are friendly enough to greet you whenever you come by the clubhouse or to get a package. All I know is that the management staff over there has always been polite and understanding about all situations. All that combined with the amenities, rent, and events and youve got your self a great place to call HOME for four years.

I loved my time at Grove! It was the perfect apartment for my time at Iowa State! A huge bonus for me was that it was pet friendly! The amenities were always kept in great condition and the community itself was very clean! One of my favorite things about Grove was the community events that the staff hosted! And the staff was the most friendly that I encountered during my apartment search! Hands down one of the best places to live in Ames!

This apartment complex was a great place to live during my first year of veterinary school! My roommates and I were extremely nervous to live in a new state alone, but the staff made the move very easy and enjoyable. I would never live here again. (May 2018-July 2018)When I moved in, the entry way to the apartment had been neglected for some time. Spider webs and other debris everywhere. The first month I lived in the unit the power breaker flipped over a dozen times. The remedy was to have my electronics cause a surge to flip the breaker to find the root cause (putting my things at risk). Nothing was done until the second month living in the unit when they finally decided to change the breaker after several more flips of the breaker. When it was above 90 in Ames the AC in the unit wouldnt cool below 78 degrees, which was over 80 in the bedrooms. I requested the filter be changed, but they didnt something else and it barely made a difference. Thankfully, the weather cooled down.During June the ceiling in the kitchen was leaking. It took a week for the drywall to be removed and replaced. The work area wasnt cleaned by the workers and the kitchen light fixture wasnt replaced for a month. It took until I requested an additional maintenance request. The electricity charge is a scam. I called the company and they dont charge what you actually use, but a formula to make them money.I only lived here three months and that was three months too long. I wish I would have researched this property prior to signing a lease. The model unit they show you doesnt reflect what I personally experienced. Im sure some units are clean and kept pristine. I would never live here again even if they gave me a $700 gift card.I was charged an absurd $25 cleaning fee when I moved out as well. The internet and cable were the only positives of this unit.

Do not recommend living here at all. A lot of very rude management team. Some of the incentives are lies. They take way too long to do most things, like maintenance or giving gift cards they owe you. Half the time, the staff is not wearing masks. They double charged my roommate for rent, and then charged my roommate’s account to get her money back. That’s just wrong. There is also many other issues that I don’t even have the time to write out. I know I have another review about our move in and the Grove responded. Their comment claims they immediately made an agreement on move in day. This was after hours of waiting and hours on the phone with them saying “we didn’t promise you a certain apartment in the contract, there is nothing we can do”. It took so much arguing for them to actually admit they did anything wrong, and it was probably only to get me off their backs. They say it’s hard for them to get everything done that they should because they have so many residents. I do not need a response from the Grove for this review, nor do I want one.

They don’t properly fix maintenance issues so you have to keep putting the same one in 5 times and constantly call them before they actually fix the problem. Just moved in and they do not deal well with the things THEY do wrong. Signed my lease 9 months prior to showing up and when I showed up for move in day they made us spend hours waiting to reassign us to a new apt. number because they forgot to when they knew 2 WEEKS prior to the move in date. Even when they eventually got us assigned to another apartment, it was completely unready for us, with a broken front door and broken beds. Since then, the staff has been treating us with disrespect and refuse to help us with out problems or admit they were wrong. I am sure this is a situation they dont have often, but they have been hard to deal with overall and maybe this review will finally get their attention as to what they are doing wrong.

Would not recommend this place to anyone. Staff was always nice but it was clear that corporate was taking advantage of them as well as the tenants. If you live here you can expect to be charged hundreds of dollars of fees when you move out even if you clean correctly. You can expect the heat not to work in the winter. Also, guaranteed that multiple water pipes will break during the winter. You can expect them to try to win you over with rent deals ($500 visa gift cards). They have the workers trained to tell you that the reviews on google do not reflect the company, but they 100% do. Save yourself $700 a month and do not live here. The Grove Ames should be shut down by the Better Business Bureau. Construction on these sites was admittedly not supposed to last more than 5 years. It’s truly sickening how corporate takes advantage of college students who need a place to live close to campus.SAVE YOURESELF PEOPLE AND DO NOT LIVE HERE!

Living at The Grove was the single worst experience of my life. It all started on move in day when I moved into a filthy apartment that had clearly never been cleaned, and it only got worse from there. The furniture was so cheap and uncomfortable and in terrible shape when I moved in. There were scratches and huge chips in the woodwork and all the dining room and desk chairs were falling apart. The linoleum in the kitchen would peel and slide around because it was never properly installed. They claim they have all these amenities but the tanning was closed for months with no explanation. The week after Christmas my heat broke and I had to call the office and maintenance over and over to get someone to come look at it. Eventually someone came and brought me a couple of space heaters and didnt even attempt to fix the heater. My apartment was down to 45 degrees and like that for over two weeks. They pressured me to renew my lease immediately after moving in. After a couple months all their free events and activities were only for those who renewed their lease. This place is extremely over priced and you couldnt pay me to live there again. When I moved out I deep cleaned the entire apartment and they still charged me over $100 in cleaning fees even though it was 10 times cleaner than when I moved in. If I have to give one good thing for my ONE star review, its that they forgot to charge me for my pet on monthly rent (after I payed the outrageous $300 pet registration of course.) DO NOT LIVE HERE!

The apartment management is rarely available. The rates are ridiculous even if you’re a returning resident.Maintenance is FAIRLY efficient. There’s no loyalty/appreciation to those who do renew their lease. The amenities are poor; Pool is never 100% clean, volleyball court.... no more volleyball court, grills look like sewer tops and are not protected in the winter or harsh weather. No golf course discount or connection.Entry and exit gates are for show; no real use.Central garbage disposal but could fit an additional garbage disposal in back lot.Community center resources are extremely limited so the entire community can never actually enjoy a community event. In summary: I would not be returning nor would I ever recommend this apartment community to anyone in my network. Even with newer complexes being constructed nearby, rates did not reflect competition and neither does the furniture, amenities, nor management.

If I could give this place 0 stars i would. I already wrote a previous review on them and I am writing another one, this time i am telling you. Do not live here. They charge you for anything and everything and will tell you it is based on their guidelines. I do not find it fair that the tenant that lived here before me did not get charged for the same thing i am being charged for. They will rip you off when it comes to how much you pay in rent and what the actual apartment looks like. They only show you a model when you want a tour and not what the actual living condition is. You will be told one thing by a manager or employee and then told something different by another manager or employee. I was told to clean to the best of my ability and that is exactly what i did, yet here we are. It is honestly a scam living here. And when i spoke with the manager, I told him i would call him back later and specifically asked him how long he would be in the office and told me yet when i called back they said He already talked to you. He busy sending out emails If you can not talk to your tenants, please find another job to do as your job as manager is to speak to tenants, especially because i said i would call back to talk to him in particular. They talk about how they enforce dog owners to pick up the poop around the apartment complex yet everyday you walk outside and there is poop everywhere. When i moved in i had to re clean my room and common area as they were not clean when we moved in. Before i moved out i asked if they could do a walk through while i was still at the apartment and i was told no, they do it after you leave. And now i see why. Also the gate they have at the front by the office, there is no reason for as it is open 24/7 so there is really no security. In the fall there was a spider problem outside our front door. When i say spider problem i mean it and these are not your regular spiders. When i asked them how it could be taken care of they said they had sprayed the area already before we moved in which i feel is a lie for how many there were and they had someone come by to talk to me and he told me he would hose down the place with the chemicals they use, but he never did. In the winter time the stairs are never shoveled an neither are the sidewalks and then they freeze over which is dangerous. They tell you its your responsibility to take care of your stairs that is shared with everyone else that lives by you which i find hilarious. Your hot water is bound to run out. Your utility bill will be high for many months. Combine what I wrote previously and this and i could write so much more.

There are much better people willing to take his position but instead he is still employed. The management seems to be good and easy to work with; however many of their employees are not. The pool, fire pits and, basketball, and volleyball courts are great and free to use for residents. It says gated community when in fact the gates have been broken for four years now and police and non residents are always going in and out.

Review №59

First of all, they dont let you move in until the weekend right before school starts, which is ridiculous and inconvenient, because they claim they need 3 weeks between the ending of leases and the beginning of new ones to clean the units. Well when my roommate and I moved in, there were cleaning staff LIVING in our unit, even on move in day, and so our unit wasnt even clean, I had to deep clean my bathroom myself. Before signing the lease, we were told that we would get a unit in the same building, on the same floor as some friends signing a lease at the same time, but that didnt happen; our buildings were about as far apart as possible. So theyll appear accommodating but dont actually follow through. The appliances are about as cheap as you can get; the dishwasher barely works, half the time dishes are still dirty after going through. The apartment units arent constructed well and arent well insulated, so in the winter, even when we werent in our unit for weeks over winter break and had the thermostat set to only 60, our utility bill was $75 a person. Theres no way a less than 1000 sq ft apartment that was unoccupied for 3 out of the 4 weeks of the billing cycle should have a utility bill that high. If I had known Id be paying that much a month, I never would have signed. Im half convinced we were scammed by the utility company, the bills were so high. The unit we were in was facing a sort of courtyard between our building and another, so the sun never shone in our apartment, never warming it up or making it bright. The apartment complex is a chain and doesnt have a landlord, so I have no idea who we wouldve called if we had a maintenance emergency in the middle of the night. They charge a $60 fine if your rent is a day late, and they dont care because its a big company charging you, not a local landlord. The gate that should be closed for security purposes literally never is, so its pointless and theres no security beyond the lock on your door, which is located outside and not in an interior hallway. At one time, for a few weeks, all the lights in the stairwells in our building and others were all out, so I literally could not see our apartment door at all at night unless I used a flashlight, which seems like a pretty big safety and security hazard. Long story short, dont sign a lease here, there are so many better, closer, cheaper, well-managed places you could and should go instead.

Do you value your emotional well being? If you dont, go ahead and live in this hell hole.We had electric overages every month, regardless of how much electricity we used ($100+ in electricity, what?). At one point, we even turned off all of the breakers in breaker box, and the meter still kept running. The Grove did nothing to even check into that situation.Another evening, my roommate was walking in from the parking lot, and she witnessed people breaking into cars. While were on the subject of the parking lot, dont ever expect to park close to your building. Youll get tons of great exercise walking to your apartment from Timbuktu. If you want to use the tanning bed, just know that they replace the bulbs every three years. Youd have better luck tanning under your living room ceiling light.Even after moving out, the Grove still finds a way to screw me over. They sent my account to collections without even notifying me that I had a balance on my account. It was for $35. The grove has its short coming but everywhere does. When I moved in a lot of the Apt needed some work done. The AC was broken, our water to our dishwasher was not connected, Washing machine was also broken, and breakers were tripping. They refused to believe that my roommate and I were not the problem until we finally annoyed them enough to replace our breakers. Ever since we have had all these things fixed living at the grove has been great. The pool is a little shallow but it has a volleyball net, unfortunately the pool hours are tied to the office hours so if you have a job or dont have free time till later in the day you probably wont have a chance to use it. The work out room is open 24/7 and it is entirely adequate. The tavern (I think is what it is called) has been closed all summer. My only gripe is that the pool hours are not independent of the office even though they do not have a lifeguard on duty.

Way over priced and horribly managed. I personally do not live here however my girlfriend does.... Which means I am frequently around. After she placed multiple requests to have a multitude of items in her apartment fixed there was nothing done. Well 4 months later and now they are fixed.... Or I fixed them. This is the beginning of many issues with the Grove. They also have a hard line towing policy they allow a towing company to come in and tow people that do not have a Grove sticker on there window. One of my friends that lived at the Grove had their car towed. Which is odd that a place such as this tows their own residence cars. So regardless if you live here or not you might wake up the next day without a car. Its a hard gamble. The next they advertise is that they are a gated community and you pay for that name and status of exclusivity or the lack there of..... There is no gate and this certainly is not true of their previous advertisment. There were homeless individuals sleeping under the the over hang of the main office. I would be weary of living here. There are nicer places that are much less and that provide more imenities. This place needs a massive amount of help.

Management sucks, every thing you tell them so they can improve they pretend they listen. Renewed the lease because I dont have time or people to help me move out/in to a new. Now even to transfer to a different room IN THE SAME APT is a big deal and a problem that they cant solve unless you pay something. If you dont want to deal with bad management and people that dont even try to make it work for you, just dont even try The Grove

Extremely bad Maintenance service. They lie on the portal that the service is done. Bugs on the entrance of the apartment. Smells really bad. They show you an attractive sample room, swimming pool, gym and some other places - its all in dreams. Gym equipment are good but partially broken. Tanning room was never ever available. Open Apartments. If you are planning on not removing the snow in winter, please re consider your choice. If you are not planning on having a car and are planning to come back home after 10pm on weekdays and not staying at apartment on weekends, get ready to pay uber or get a ride from your friend. In short, far away from the campus, cyrides are available every 20 minutes till 10 pm on weekdays and no buses on weekends. Not at all worth it for 575$ PER ROOMMATE

I would not recommend living here at all. From the broken sink when i first moved in to the time i cancelled a maintenance request and they still came into my room and stepped in my bathtub to the point there was dirt in my bathtub and my towel was on the floor after they came and did absolutely nothing. With the people that work at the front desk and management, there is no communication. So one person may tell you one thing yet someone else will tell you another. They also have a homeless problem that they fail to talk about or mention. You will get charged for any and everything and so if you do move here make sure you write down on your white sheet that they give you, everything wrong with the apartment. Some people’s apartments when they first moved in were dirty, some people have found roaches... so live here at your own expense.

Absolutely horrible. My roommate and I have had a bug/cockroach infestation for 6 months, and they had failed to fix the problem. Keeping in mind, this violates serious health code violations, and we still had to pay rent. Among that being the biggest problem, our heating and cooling system had broke twice in the winter. It got down to 49 degrees. The last time the maintenance man had came, he told me, Well if this doesnt fix the problem, you will have to call and pay someone else to fix it. It is their job to fix these issues in the contract. Also, I have been emailing Kalli who is their head leasing manager, explaining my issues, as well as that it is a requirement that you have to have a guarantor for renewing a lease this is upcoming year. But my parents had not signed it due to all these problems, and it does state in the contract that it will not be binding until they do. Shes trying to tell me its not, and I have waited weeks on end when she claimed she filed my problems with regional. I will not be paying the Grove another dime. Lastly, both my roommate and I have had both had trouble with our toilets breaking numerous times. Flooding our floors. Highly recommend to never lease from this place.

Where should I begin? I have lived in multiple apartments and this was by far the worst! First, they are non-smoking apartments according to the website, but both of my roommates regularly smoked cigarettes and marijuana inside the apartment in the common areas. Other drugs were also present and I am pretty sure one of the roommates was actually dealing drugs out of their room. They also had friends over 24/7 who contributed to the smoke problem. Guests stayed for days at a time, taking over the common areas and even bringing their pets along. One roommate constantly stole my groceries and even stole money and belongings from my other roommate which escalated into a nasty confrontation. Management did NOTHING to address these issues. The walls are paper thin, you could hear everything happening inside and out. The air conditioning did not work well and the apartment was constantly hot and stuffy. The construction is extremely cheap, everything in the apartment was falling apart after less than three years, furniture, fixtures, carpet, blinds, you name it! No security at all, the buildings and gate remained open and unlocked 24/7, the whole complex was full of of random non-residents at all hours smoking, drinking, cruising the parking lot blasting music, and loitering. The so-called Grove Lifestyle included blasting music until 3 am, crowds of sketchy non-residents at free for all parties that left the pool and grounds full of garbage and empty alcohol containers. In the gym everything was in disrepair and workouts were constantly interrupted by non-residents knocking on the door to gain access to the facilities since they did not have keys. The staff were constantly smoking cigarettes and there were a lot of loose pets running around, including pit bulls. The entire door frame on the entrance to the building was separated from the building, and half of the exterior lights in the main building were broken or burnt out. Save your money and your sanity and find a different apartment. The slight convenience is not worth the expensive yet ghetto experience of the Grove. Trashy living at its finest!

Helpful, but my specific apartment could use some well needed updates. Just because it comes furnished doesnt mean tenants before you took good care of the place.

Great college living! Affordably priced, pet friendly, what more can you want! Amazing location: easy access to CyRide, close to campus, jack trice, and DUFF AVE (grocery shopping, Downtown Main Street, etc.) Club house amenities includes pool, gym, tanning, and large library with free printing.

The day i entered the apartment it was filled with trash and people were cleaning it despite the 15 day buffer period. i had numerous problems (dirty couch, dirty walls- scribbling, food stains etc. broken bathroom fixtures. all these things have never been fixed even after regular regular complaints i made. The swimming area is almost never clean. I had high hopes from this place but it has been a huge let down. Would not suggest it. Not worth it.

Honestly, I didnt hate my experience here. I did not have any unresolved, inconvenient experiences with my apartment, the front office staff, etc. The only issue I really had was having loud neighbors. The walls are pretty thin but the people are generally nice enough where if you leave them a note telling them theyre being too loud or smoking too much weed, they typically listen. I guess another annoying thing was the internet would go out randomly. Otherwise, I didnt totally hate this place; I kind of enjoyed it here.I move to Coralville after graduation to start my full-time job and was compelled to write a review after apartment searching in a different area. I paid about $575/month for a 2-bedroom apartment (including rent, $4 service fee, and renters insurance). Man, was I wrong to complain. Sure, that seems like a lot of money for a college student. But remember that this place is fully furnished and almost all utilities are included (you get a $25 electric allowance). I will be paying MORE than $575/month... without utilities, an unfurnished place, a tiny closet, and a shared bathroom.I read some pretty pathetic reviews on here where the author seems like a someone who cant find the bright side in anything. I understand everyones situation is different, but not everything about this place is soul-sucking. And if you come across the review about Blake, one of the office staff members, I have never had a bad experience with him. Hes always been very kind and patient with me; however, I really only came in to pick up packages - maybe that person had other personal housing problems, I dont know.If you made it this far in my review, you probably are heavily considering on living here. My opinion: why not? No, I am not being paid to write this. I wanted to write this review because Im bored at work and thought someone would appreciate reading a review that was genuine. Things you should maybe take into consideration: Im incredibly easy-going and dont complain a lot, so my review wont be as critical as everyone elses. But that doesnt mean my review is nonsense. The Grove has its pros and cons, and I definitely think the pros outweigh the cons. If you can look past the internet going out randomly (not that often), potentially loud (yet possibly nice) neighbors, and going over $5-10/month on your electric bill, then I say go for it. Sure, there are other places closer to campus and for a cheaper price, but if you want the convenience of not having to worry about furniture or utilities, this place may be a good fit for you.Lastly, I think the bus system is changing a bit (less buses running)... so I would suggest looking into that if you do not have a car to drive to campus/the commuter lot.

Nice place to live, but you better find your own parking....the resident parking lot is FULL. Three of the buildings are forced to park illegally, park 1/4 mile away, or ride the bus hourly.

Average apartments, but the staff was very friendly. Gym is nice and lobby was always clean. Parking could be difficult and garbage would occasionally build up at the dumpster/compactor.

Property management is terrible, people behind the desk all seem cocky like they have something to prove over you. In the whole apartment 3 people have 1 ethernet jack (for when the internet actually works), 1 cable jack, theres no insulation so your room is always cold in the winter, we had mold on our walls when I moved in, you can hear the electric stove arc when its on. Anytime someone above you moves or shuts a door your whole apartment shakes. Outside theres garbage all over, they never salt the ice so its a skating rink, nobody empties the garbage cans so it smells like sun-baked feces from the dogs (who are actually quite pleasant to have around). When asked if I would be subleasing this summer I had to say no because I couldnt ask anybody to live here with a clear conscious.

I was able to tolerate this place for a few weeks. Many of the rooms have nice interiors, but many things break easily and it takes weeks/months to get simple stuff replaced (like a washer and dryer). The students that live here can be complete idiots and usually have loud grunge or dubstep playing at all hours of the night. Asking them to turn it down doesnt have any effect. All the things they promise as benefits are complete lies. The coffee bar is only open when staff are there and remember it and the coffee machine has been broken for months, so it was pointless to go.The pool is full of blue-green cyanobacteria (algae). In my opinion, the management is the worst part. Its clear they couldnt care about anything that goes on as long as theyre getting their money pulled in. Horrible experience.Plus side: they have private bathrooms with private broken toilets.

Let me start here: the living experience at The Grove is below inferior. As neighbors are not students, as the description implies, rather The Grove is occupied by low income residents. This gave a feeling quite contrasting from quality, more like a ghetto, but just with more low lives than one. The employees are budgy and give little to no respect to tenants, and can often be found smoking outside their office. Once I finally put down my foot and moved, they charged me with nonsense charges and fees that totaled up well above $1000. My advice to students, or anyone at all looking into living here is... Look somewhere else. That place is a steaming pile of garbage.

Probably one of the worse experiences in college living.Despite having your own room/b-room this place would be the worst to live. When I moved in my bathroom was badly water damaged from the last resident. My bathroom door will not close fully because of the way the building settled. There are many colors of white on doors/walls/ceilings because of sloppy painting. The furniture is mostly damaged (despite being fully furnished). There is a pool that you can use for a few month while living here, but is shared with the townhomes across the street.I am not neighbors with any college students, rather 3 low income families.I live on the fourth floor and there are no elevators. No one clears the stairs of snow and they are poorly salted.Maintenance is very slow. When I moved in my shower drain was clogged from being re-drywalled(which they poorly fixed, because behind the toilet is completely moldy) and it took the priority maintenance team a few days to fix, so I used my roommates shower at that time. The paint is chipping all across my bathroom from the steam( by the way my vent leaks cold air year round, so my bathroom is usually 5 degrees colder than my room(and I cant seal my door to prevent the cold air from coming in my room). If you plan on driving anywhere that you wont be home by 10 pm, dont. I go out about 4 days a week and have to walk about 100 cars widths to my unit. At least youll be fit if you add that to 4 flights of stairs. The internet will also go down on you at least once a week, which is really frustrating, plus you cant expect to get anywhere near the advertised 100Mb/s speed advertised, I have the latest technology and get no more than 20mb/s.If after reading this review you decide to live here, youre one tough fool (unless you can negotiate the rent to around $400(IMO this experience shouldnt be valued any higher). But guess what, rates are non negotiable. Also, Dont even think about parking illegally, youll be towed even if your car is only there between 2 and 3 am.

Terrible utilities, internet and management. Took over three weeks to have a mice problem resolved and they only came out to investigate it because we directly contacted the manager of the complex after they ignored our requests. Would not recommend living here.
