We enjoyed visiting the Old Salem village during the Christmas season with special activities and performers. The Moravian stars are quite unique. The Old Salem time period just predates Christmas trees so instead homes decorated with pyramids with fruit, garland and often a manger. The Moravians, a religious group from Bohemia, created a planned community in 1753 along the Main street of Salem (now Winston-Salem). Today many buildings are restored, some are private residences, some are working re-enactments of a gunsmith shop, a carpenters joinery, the boys school, village inn, potter, baker, etc.One curiosity for us was the tile lined stoves. We were told the tiled boxes are stacked to form the oven.
Such a great place with a lot of info. If you want buy tickets for the tour I think it is worth it because you get to see a lot more than if you just walk around. This is also a great place for a small school tour. You can even get some snacks along the way. If you dont want to pay for the tour tickets you can just walk around and go into some of the shops and it is still a pleasant experience.
Beautiful did my engagement shoot here with kristi ann photography...she was amazing...the old salem atmosphere was beautiful
A great way to spend a day, beautiful shaded street lined with historic homes. Easy to walk, low traffic, nicely shaded so its bearable even in the heat. The homes are private residences so its important to be respectful. Worth noting that the area consists of two streets, one is the main walk, the other is really just a bonus for those interested in either the history or the architecture of a bygone era.
Visiting Old Salem looks a little different right now (buildings and stores closed due to Covid-19), but the streets of Old Salem are still beautiful to walk along and enjoy Christmas decorations they have put up! A personal favorite is the bridge filled with Moravian stars--make sure to check it out! If you are local, visit their online store: we ordered a large Moravian star and it was available for contactless pickup the following day! Star looks beautiful on the porch :) Thanks, Old Salem!
Great historic and scenic area to sightsee and play Pokemon GO. Be mindful of folks out and about having professional photographs taken, especially during prom season. Sometimes there are horse drawn carriages riding throughout the area in the warmer months. The horses always look immeasurably sad, though. I wish they didnt have to lug the humans around. The main thing you need to be aware of when visiting is the one way streets and the horrible, HORRIBLE craggy broken streets. That area is far too rich to have such woefully maintained streets and sidewalks. Watch your step AND your vehicle. Overall, a decent lil old-timey vignette in the heart of Winston-Salem.
Very nice visitor center. Its spacious and has plenty of information nicely printed. In addition, the auditorium houses an original organ from old Salem. There is a gift shop, a penny press, and ticket center there. Unique gifts include a Morvaian star made of paper, glass, or metal, baked goods from the Old Salem bake shop, as well as toys, ice cream, mugs/pottery, etc. which are made in the historical town. The bridge walkway to Old Salem is gorgeous.
Old Salem is a special place for me, one it was founded by Moravians and the historical society. If you want to get a sense of history and community, I’ll recommend you visit this historical place. You will not leave this place regretting your visit, but hoping and wishing to come back. The members of the Old Salem really take pride in their history and community. Don’t forget to get yourself a Moravian Star.😉
It’s a beautiful place for photo shoots and learn the history about old Salem town. There is a cookie store which has fresh warm cookies and the staff even has the 1970’s attire. It’s fun to go for a stroll around this place once in awhile. This place gives you the vibes of old town because of their red cobble stone everywhere and sucha a pretty place during fall. Definitely a must go.
My 11yrold daughter and I recently visited Old Salem and really enjoyed ourselves! The period-dressed story tellers are impressively knowledgeable and truly keeping everything as authentic as they possibly can. I was blown away with how organized, clean and beautifully restored/kept everything was! Would highly recommend a visit! Be sure to wear good walking shoes!
The people were so nice and helpful!
We really love walking around Old Salem. We took our engagement photos here many moons ago (photo was from 2011). We always love coming up and walking through the bridge when they have the Moravian Stars on display. This past trip they had a large section of road closed in Old Salem for renovations (lots of signs reading The new Old Salem). Construction equipment everywhere kind of takes you out of the peacefulness of it all, but I understand it has to be done.
The weather was beautiful & we enjoyed sight seeing but everything was closed darn CV19! Well go back again.
Not much change from the 70s and 80s. The 3 stars is that everything is closed. Loved the memory lane stroll.
Very beautiful place to visit outdoors, will return when everything is open again.
Beautiful area. Unfortunately, due to COVID everything was closed but still enjoyed taking in the sites of old
I think Old Salem was closed forCOVID because it was so dead so this may not be a fair review. I wouldn’t make a special trip to come here. If you’re in Winston then maybe drive by
Good staff, clean, has a short movie, bathrooms, and a gift shop. You get tickets for the attractions at the main desk here.
Great place for education and learning.
My daughter just got married today on the bridge. It was beautiful.
Wasn’t able to go inside but looks like a cool addition to Old Salem
Awsome place closed due to covid.
Lovely center, very informative. They offer gifts and local area knowledge. Plus, it is all decorated for the season!
Not open. Web site is not up dated. Drove 2 hr. To get here.
It was a fun historical experience with lots to learn and look at. We got there around 1 and only had till 4:30, we could have spent more time easily. The passes allowed next day entry but we were only visiting the area for the day. All the workers were very knowledgeable and even made things currently, like the wood worker and the gunsmith. The only negative was the price. I felt like it was way over priced, it was $150 for 4 adults and 3 kids and offered no discounts for AAA or anything. The different options were not helpful either. Also the family pass only covers a family of 4. It also needed a bit more guidance as far as what was open and what wasnt. The Doctor was supposed to be open a and was closed for the weeked. Also there was not a lot for food and drink while youre on the tour. Its fine if you are a local, but passing through looking for something to do for the day, you might want to find something else.
Stars up at crossing bridge. Great old fashioned Christmas exoerience.
Although nothing was opened, we enjoyed looking around. Great place to take photos.
A beautiful experience!!!
Clean bathrooms. Great gift shop.
Awsome place to learn and start your journey at a fun spot.
Love this place since I was a kid eating flap Jacks and apple juice. Great place if you want to learn a little history about our hometown and how they lived. Pretty interesting stuff but hey I love history in general but a great place to take the kids, walk the trails, take some photos.
Great place for pictures
Loved this place! The people in the historic buildings are full of history and love to share. Really enjoyed my visit. Ate at the Tavern...chicken pie...very good. Bakery....uummmm...what a way to kick off my holiday season! Highly recommend!
Love this place
Very friendly. Lots of info
Very informative. Ticket required to participate in most of the Old Salem buildings. Gift shops and the bakery needed no ticket. We enjoyed our own walking tour up and down the main streets.
I have been here numerous times, for events and shopping. This was my first visit to attend a Muddy Creek Music Hall event. We used to go to Bethania once or twice a year for musical performances, but this location is much better. The Muddy Creek cafe is inside Old Salem, serves salads and sandwiches and frequently features live music. Ticketed events are held in the auditorium of the Visitor Center. Ample parking, comfortable seating, easily accessible restrooms, good acoustics. We will definitely be back soon!
Great going in the buildings and learning about the Moravian people who lived there. Fascinating stuff. They were quite far ahead of their time. Its so important to preserve these things for ourselves and future generations.
Very clean and well staffed. Front desk attendants are extremely friendly and helpful. A wonderful place to start the Old Salem experience.
Great place to take pics on the bridge.
Always a very nice experience, the gift shop is quite pricey so we rarely buy anything, but a cozy place with very nice bathrooms. Old Salem downtown is a very nice walk as long as you respect the old, original andnhistoric unlevel walkways and sidewalks. Lovely gifts shops, bakerys, restaurants and new bathrooms for the downtown area with a nice large field for the kids to play and run around in. You can still enjoy the area without purchasing the tour tickets.
Very nice place but tours are expensive and take a while. Also you cannot visit all the old buildings without buying tickets. So very cost prohibitive. The town is really neat though.
I did not go to anything at the visitor center. But I did go through the town. Nice little area with shops. Did not buy a ticket to go into everything though as we made it late and didnt have time to see everything
Beautiful
They do a very good job of giving an accurate representation of the time. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Be aware there are a lot of small school children running around on weekdays. The actors have to modify their presentation to accommodate the short attention span and noise.
Cool history
I love wandering Old Salem, but I wish the Visitor Center hours and the other little shops hours were more aligned. I particularly love visiting on Sunday to eat brunch at the Tavern in Old Salem. I usually finish my meal around 12:15 PM and head out to walk, but unlike the Visitor Center that opens at 12:30 PM, everything else opens at 1 PM. So, I dont usually have the time to wait and do some shopping.
Such a cute little town. Im am not a native of NC so I didnt know this existed until my daughter went on a field trip. The bakery had amazing treats, shops had cute trinkets. I went to a little lunch place and ate outside. It was a great experience.
This visitor center for Old Salem is a gateway into the Moravian Settlement of 1753 which is a must-see destination in North Carolina. It is lined with vivid murals of the history of Salem. It has a wonderful gift shop relating to all things Moravian and many educational items for the kids.
Absolutely beautiful just to walk or drive thru great to see so much history in one place
Wonderful little town, chock full of interesting history. The visitors center is clean and attractive, and the staff through the entire town was so friendly and knowledgeable. I had my kids along and we had a blast. Definitely check out the Tavern for lunch!
This was a nice place. Very informative and interesting. The only dislike that I had was that I had a group of 7-8 (African American)kids and once they saw that, alot of the places would not let us look upstairs in the exhibits (homes). One guy even took it so far as to follow us around the entire art gallery. I was slightly disgusted. Definitely made us feel like we were in the olden ages.
Free parking, nice info and gift shop. Worth checking in
They were closed despite all signs and internet indicating otherwise.
What an opportunity to all who visit to learn about one of the most creative, interesting, and faithful groups of people to settle here in North Carolina. I have been here many times but still continue to jump at the chance to tour this great Moravian settlement again and again.
Busy visitors center bustling with school children. Open and spacious with great views of their original covered wood bridge. Bring walking shoes for the tour as theres lots to cover.
Poor customer serviceWe wanted to come see Santa with our children. My wife called ahead of time to get the details and was explained everything on the phone. Once we got to old Salem, with our children very excited to see Santa, we were told Santa left at 3pm.There were no post on Facebook or the Website. In addition, the lady my wife talked to on the phone with, after 3pm, made no comment that Santa had already left.
Great place to learn how local areas first came to be. Still have shops performing the old school ways of providing a living. A great education for the kids n parents alike.
Employees are friendly helpful and professional. The building is clean spacious. The bathroom are clean spacious.
Very clean and organized. Well kept. The staff is always friendly and helpful. The educational opportunities are great: a movie that plays, books, signs, and historical displays, and others. I recommend stopping by here, especially if its your first visit to Old Salem.
Great family experience. The entire visit was like going back in time. My family and I will be returning soon.
Old Salem is just amazing on so many levels! Visited on field trips when I was younger in school. Its wonderful to see so much history preserved and available to the public. A big problem in todays age is clearing out the old to make way for the new and we do so without any consideration for the history that may have been made while there. My family and I have now made it a tradition to travel near 2 hours for the trick-or-treating event for Halloween. Because of people striving to preserve our past I am able to take my son to experience a piece of history that I was fortunate enough to experience when I was a boy. I encourage everyone to explore this interesting time capsule hidden within Winston-Salem.
This was amazing
Very useful place to start your visit to Old Salem. They have movies, basic information, maps, and you can purchase your tickets to see the exhibits there. The people who work here are very helpful.
Very nice visitor center. Good intro video and very helpful and friendly staff.
Full of history. My family and I loved. Plan on staying the whole day.
A great place to see and re-live history. Old Salem is a treasure and one of my all time favorite locations to visit.
The ladies at the ticket counter are knowledgeable and very helpful. It does slow the process down for those in line, but you get the VIP treatment once you get there. The lobby is beautiful, restrooms are clean.
Great day to spend learning history and seeing really cool things.
Very interesting. Art museum, tour of historical town. Some buildings have have been made accessible for mobility challenged folks.
Muddy Creek Cafe and Music Hall has moved here, and it was a great idea. Great place.
Ticket desk was a little slow, but the staff was nice through it.
Lots to see and is a nice walk
A very large, clean, and comfortable welcome center. On par with colonial williamsburg but without the huge crowds. the bathrooms are always very clean. The thermostat is set perfectly on a hot day. and the shops have very interesting items. a great stop if you are going to check out Old Salem.
One of our favorite Holiday Traditions. We never knew they had so much going on but are impressed with every visit!
One of the best historic sites in the nation. It is a definite must see
Such a cool place tucked away right next door. Dont feel you have to go all the way to Colonial Williamsburg! Old Salem is just as good!
Friendly people there and had a short movie playing as you entered the Visitor center that was helpful explaining about Old Salem. You could buy tickets there for various exhibitions like the gunsmith shop where they actually made black powder weapons and other places as well. Some of them were free and no admission required. We opted just to walk around and look at the various things that were free and the older buildings. They way things used to be made. A interesting place to visit.
Great place to visit. Can learn alot.
Lovely town.
A favorite stop while in the Winston Salem NC area. Always changing, enjoyed the organ, now beautifully restored.
