I’ve been training for 16 years. I moved to Wilmington a few months ago, joined up here, and I’m blown away by the instructor’s attention to detail. He is incredibly technical and breaks down moves to the micro movements in a way I’ve never seen before. If you want to learn and get good, this is the place to train.
As a visitor they are very friendly and welcoming. Great studio and clean are area. 10/10 would recommend
My son has been studying Jiu Jitsu for over 6 years and has made the most progress in the past 2 years at Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The large class size allows for a wide variety of training partners improving his ability to confidently face any competitor in competition. The no contract membership is incredibly attractive and provides me with the flexibility we need. For $30 more a month I get to use the inhouse gym and get my sweat on instead of just waiting for his class to be over. I am extremely happy with the success my son has had and the friendships I have gained with other parents.
Highly recommend. Jonathan is a legit instructor (Lucas Lepri black belt) very detail/ technique oriented. I felt very welcomed. Everybody was super friendly. They roll hard but with honor. I will come back for my next vacations.
The academy has a great atmosphere! It’s very clean, well organized and ran by professionals! All egos are checked at the door and everyone is treated with respect from the newest member to the most senior belts. It’s not just the staff, the members are always willing to help and no question is a stupid question! I feel proud to call this academy my home!
I really enjoy training with Professor Johnathan and the training family at Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. If you are looking to better yourself mentally and physically I would highly recommend training at this academy. The Professor will push you to strive and be your best at this martial art as well as being prepared to defend yourself in difficult situations.I started training here at the end of January and to this day have seen a dramatic change in my appearance and my attitude toward different situations. I have lost a total of 36 Lbs. and 6 inches in my waist line. I feel great and have made some new friends along the way.I also have two kids that have started training as well and I can see a vast improvement in their attitudes and commitment to learning bjj. Knowing that one day if they have to use this for defense or to combat a situation is a very gratifying peace of mind to have.So if you are looking to get in shape physically and mentally or just have a backup plan if you get into a shady position, come check out Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I promise you wont regret it.
Love this gym! Family friendly and great place to learn. My kids love it, my husband loves it, and I love it! Theres no pressure and you can go at your own pace. The professor is patient and loves to teach. As a working mom this is a perfect place to get some exercise, get out some frustration, and socialize. Kids are always welcome to hang out while you take a class.
Great school and gym. Instruction is clear and Jonathan makes sure you know whats going on. The rolls are all very controlled, skilled and fun! Will definitely come back if Im ever in the area.
I had a great time training at Uzcategui BJJ this morning. Black belt instructor Jonathan Uzcategui welcomed me to train in his beautiful gym today. The students were humble, skilled, and welcoming in the best possible way. If you find yourself living or traveling near Wilmington North Carolina, you owe it to yourself to stop in and train in a top notch facility with good people.
This gym has been amazing. First off, the facility is exceptional. Super clean and a full on gym with weights and everything. For someone fairly new to BJJ and new to the gym, its been a great experience. Everyone has gone out of their way to introduce themselves and get to know you more. Theyve also been super patient with me when it comes to teaching, and that makes a huge difference. You feel like a part of a team from day one. The instructor, Jonathan, is a super cool guy and a great teacher.Whether youre experienced or brand new to BJJ, Uzcategui is a great place to come check out.
Definitely recommend this gym! i stopped in on vacation and got more then I expected. Not only is their Jiu Jitsu super legit! They are very nice people. you feel the love right at the door. Then the pressure we all train for on the mats!
I highly recommend stopping into Mr. Uzcateguis academy, whether youre just passing through or you live in the Wilmington area. Master Uzcategui provides highly technical instruction and a welcoming environment in his class. He strives to make every new person comfortable and is attentive throughout the class, giving constant feedback to his students. In addition, he participates in sparring sessions with his students and is always working to improve and diversify his already impressive skill set.The mats at the academy are spacious and made of high quality tatami, while the fitness area contains everything you need to get a workout in. The facility also has locker rooms, showers and laundry machines for your convenience. Overall, the facility is just as impressive as the quality of instruction.Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu Jitsu stands as an excellent example for any martial arts school.
Im an exchange student from England and I flew to Wilmington mid-August. I didnt really know anybody or have many friends. I was looking for a place to train before I arrived and decided that Jonathans academy looked the most professional and had an overwhelming amount of positive reviews. I spoke to Jon a little bit on Facebook to get some information before I came and especially as an undergraduate, the discounted student pricing is really great. The very next day after I arrived in Wilmington, I visited the academy as a complete stranger and I was immediately treated like family. He even picked me up because I didnt have a car. Jonathan makes sure to take care of his students, treat them nicely and teach them in ways that they can digest and understand.New students are always introduced to the rest of the class and made to feel welcome. For those travelling to Wilmington in need of a place to train, you will feel right at home here. Ive made friends with more people at Jons academy than I have at my university. If you want to improve your game for a good price around good people, this is the place for you.
I’ve been a member for six months but it feels much longer. Jonathan runs an amazing academy with great instructional technique for all levels. Great for anyone who is looking to compete or those just looking to stay in shape. Also fantastic for law enforcement professionals looking to sharpen self defense tactics as well as join a family oriented gym with a variety of class times, plus 24/7 access to the facility! Very supportive of first responders and military.
I have been extremely impressed with Alliance. The instruction is great. The workouts are rigorous. Jonathan keeps a nice clean facility. And the group is free of the inflated egos.Jonathans attention to detail during his instruction really makes his students technically superior to those at other schools. I came to this gym as a blue belt with 4 years of experience and have been very impressed by the skills demonstrated by Jonathans students. The childrens program is great. I have my 5 year old twins enrolled and they have been loving it. The instructors do a nice job splitting the kids up by age and ability. They are very patient with the kids, but firm enough to keep them progressing.Whether youre experienced, brand new, or just looking for something for you kids, Alliance should be the first and last gym you check out.
Love the gym. They are family run, courteous but firm in teaching and they can go hard. Dont expect to be babied here but if you are showing up and putting in the effort and a positive attitude, youll be at home here. There are classes for little kids, older kids and adults. If you want to learn BJJ, I think youd would be hard pressed to find a better gym in town. 24/7 access, unlimited classes, as of the time of this review; membership prices max out for 3+ people to join (if you are a family of 3+ there is no more charge for above 3), no yearly contract and full gym are all why we settled on giving them our hard earned money. 1st class is free and you can drop in on any of the class times to trial.
When I found this gym I was searching for gym that would reignite the fire and passion in my kids for the sport of Jiu Jitsu. My kids had been training for almost three years in the sport at another gym. They had several different instructors over the years and slowly felt less and less at home there. So when my search for a new gym/home for my kids lead me to Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, my search was over. The moment we walked into the gym we were greeted like family. That night after the first class my kids all begged me to start taking them back there. I knew right then I had found what I was looking for. In the months sense then I have seen that dying fire reignite into a full on blaze in my kids, which in turn motivated me to get back on the mats. We love the gym and the Jiu Jitsu family we have, and I say family because that is what we are, a family. Now as far as the gym goes it truly is an amazing high quality facility. Jonathan and his coaching staff are top notch. I am just a beginner in this sport but the amount and quality of knowledge Jonathan possess and has passed down to his staff is amazing. He has a contagious desire and passion for this sport that is only surpassed by his desire to pass that love and knowledge on to next generation. So if you are just starting out, curious about Jiu Jitsu, or have been training but lost that desire, I highly recommend coming by and seeing if you can find what you have been looking for in this gym.
I spent the last week training with Professor Jonathan Uzcategui and his students, as a guest, and I can’t express enough how welcoming everyone is. I was immediately met with smiles and introductions that would put anyone thinking about starting at ease. Overall positive atmosphere! Now let’s talk about the quality of instruction. After training at Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for a week I realized there are different levels and Professor Jonathan and his instructors are amongst the best. Any time I’m in the Wilmington area I know where I’m going to be training!
Great gym. Super friendly and welcoming. Very clean and excellent facilities. Huge mats, new gym equipment and showers. They train hard and the level is excellent. I trained here for one month while visiting family. I highly recommend
I have done some sort of martial art for nearly 20 years. I have been training here on and off for about 3 years now, because of moving to different states for work. The entire time I’ve been here, Jonathan has always been the most professional, encouraging, respectful, honest, inspiring person I’ve ever trained under. He makes sure everyone feels welcome and accepted at his academy, and has never tried to belittle or talk down upon anyone. He’s always been very encouraging and very honest with anyone who has trained here. He acts like a true professional on and off the mat, and is incredibly passionate about BJJ. He’s an incredible role model and someone I really look up to.
I have always wanted to take a Boxing class. So earlier this year I started researching where I would feel at home to devote my focus. I found that home at Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Fitness with my trainer, Hope. In the past, I had never taken a structured class of any kind. Hope takes the time to teach technique so that one day if I am in a situation where I need to protect myself, I can feel confident in my training and my abilities to stay safe. Training with Hope at Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Fitness has given me my confidence back and the drive to see my weight loss goals met! It feels great to be empowered again. Thanks to everyone at Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Fitness, for taking the time to believe in me and motivating me to meet my goals!
Jonathan and Hope teach with a perfect balance of technique and common sense. They are very patient, yet, pushing you hard to become better. They want nothing but the best for every person. I have learned more at Alliance in the past two years than I have anywhere else! The facilities are meticulously clean and everyone is very friendly ( no egos). My wife and I own Lions Crest Martial Arts and Jonathan and Hope were more than willing to open their doors to us, another gym. We are very blessed to be a part of Alliance NC!
I usually dont write reviews on anything ever, but the quality of this academy as well as Professor Jonathan is so extraordinary I felt compelled to. Ive only been here for about 2 months and have benefited immensely from Jonathan and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and he is genuinely somebody I consider a role model both on and off the mat.Whether youre an active competitor, looking to stay in shape, or are totally new to BJJ, you simply will not find a more professional and positive training environment than the one here. If youre on the fence about where to train in Wilmington, nothing else even comes close -- come train here.
I was in town for a meeting and hated to miss a whole week of Jiu Jitsu, so I looked up the local schools to see if I could catch a walk-in class. Before leaving, I showed the selection of schools my coach and he recommended this one based on reputation and how it looked online. When I got to town, I called first to ask about showing up for a class and the response was so positive I couldnt wait to get out there. After a bit of an adventure getting there and worried it would be too late join class, I was greeted warmly, instructed where to change and we got right too it. The entire experience was excellent from start to finish. Jonathan is a passionate and skilled instructor, every one of his students was respectful and polite. It was like being at home amidst a bunch of people Id never met.I showed up for the 7pm class on a Tuesday. We had an hour of top notch instruction working technique, then had an hour of training. I am a white belt and was matched against purple and blue belts as well as being invited to roll with Jonathan himself. It was a fantastic time, safety is paramount, everyone rolled with calm and control. Jonathan took time to chat with me, sharing his philosophy, experience and abundant enthusiasm. If you are in town, this is the place to train. If you live within a couple of hours, you owe it to yourself to make a trip out here. When I come back to Wilmington, I will certainly pack my gi.Thanks to everyone at Uzcategui for a great night.
World class Jiu Jitsu! One of the most welcoming training centers Ive ever been to. The head instructor has a passion for teaching Jiu Jitsu with a strong attention to detail. The gym is amazing with everything you could possibility need to train Jiu Jitsu, MMA or just work on your overall fitness. The class I attended had women and kids alike! Skill levels varied from beginner to advance. If you are looking for a great place to get in shape and are tired of the big box gyms, definitely give this place a try. You will quickly realize that this place has great community and is a family environment!
My experience with this school was awesome. Very detailed instruction and coaching from the Professor! They all welcomed me while I was traveling away from home for a weekend. Very clean facility! I will be coming to this school again when I come back! If you live in Wilmington you need to check this place out!
I started at Alliance because the classes fit my schedule and I had a growing interest in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I have trained various martial arts since age 21 (33 now) and the level of professionalism and instruction is phenomenal. Jonathan truly cares about his students and meets each individuals needs. The atmosphere is very helpful and friendly. Im a skinny guy and was very intimidated at first because of the contact aspect of rolling but after a week learned that everyone is here to learn, not kill each other. Jonathan rolled with me often helping me to relax and better understand how to focus on technique and the fundamentals. There is no ego here, just humble honest people who want to be better. Whether its self improvement, you want to compete, or just learn the gentle art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you have come to the right place.
My son has been going to Jiu Jitsu here for over six months. Words cannot express how impressed we are with the facility and the instructors. Jonathan is a true pro at teaching the kids the sport. Not only are the instructors top notch, but the kids have adopted a family atmosphere where they help other kids. All the instructors treat the kids as if they were their own and they ensure that there is enough one on one time for everyone. The sport is extremely difficult; however, Jonathan takes the time to teach technique to the entire class. Our son looks forward to training days and has made this his passion. Thank you to Jonathan and Hope.
My son has learned more self-confidence and self-control, with toning and endurance building as well. We live in Jacksonville and after visiting a few gyms in town we find it is well worth our 1 to 1 1/2 hour drive to Wilmington. The adult instructors are amazing! They are firm, attentive and fair.
Alliance BJJ is an outstanding gym. I attended three classes while I was near Wilmington and I can tell you, the instruction was awesome. Jonathan and his team are detailed oriented and have a sound system that they are teaching. Every student in the gym made an effort to shake my hand and welcome me to their mat. A very classy place with great athletes. I will be back to roll with my new friends!!
I have been training with Jonathan for over four years now and it has changed my life for the better. When I began I just wanted to be a recreational player and pick up a few tricks to help in judo. Within a couple months of training with Jonathan I was hooked. I have lost 40 lbs since then and found a passion that helps me deal with stress and become a more balanced person off the mat. It has been a true lifestyle change for me. I cant say enough good things about Jonathan. He is a World Class instructor who teaches current and effective techniques applicable for all levels. If someone wants to take as a hobby and just recreation then no problem but I find most people like myself will soon get hooked. I am amazed at how quickly people improve under his instruction.
My experience at Uzcategui BJJ has been excellent. Professor Jonathan has created a great environment to learn and train. The instruction is very professional, detailed and taught at a pace appropriate for the class. The students are welcoming, friendly and willing to help less experienced students. Also, the facility itself is excellent, not only with a large mat area but a full gym as well, and it is always extremely clean.I have and will continue to recommend Uzcategui BJJ!
Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has it all: large mat space, positive and friendly atmosphere, and black belt Jonathan Uzcategui. His attention to detail and willingness to help you will greatly enhance your learning and understanding. His expertise and teaching ability will transform not only your game, but also your life. See you on the mat!
This is the place to be! Whether you are seeking the martial arts for competition purposes or just a solid gym to get you in the best shape of your life, Alliance will take you to the top. No joke. I have never been in better shape and I have only been training here for 5 months now. The coaches are world class competitors and have everything you look for in someone that will help you reach your fitness and competition goals. Most importantly however, Alliance has this family-like feel to it that makes you feel right at home when you step in. This type of environment is critical when it comes to learning and executing the techniques we train here. Come check it out!
I was traveling through and stopped in for a great training session. Professor Uzcategui has created such a welcoming environment. The students are all friendly and the jiu jitsu is solid. I have traveled to dozens of schools and let me say Professor Uzcategui is top level, I was pleasantly surprised at the level of his team. I come down here regularly and most certainly will be coming back to train here. I strongly would recommend training here if you are in the area.
Very welcoming. Huge high quality mat space, with 24/7 quality work out equipment, strength & cardio. But nothing beats the high level technical instruction. Only gripe is that i wont be in town longer.
I travel a lot with work, so it is always a challenge to find a good school with a friendly atmosphere. I have to say this is the best training I have found in my travels. The instructor is extremely courteous. Jon goes out of his way to make everyone comfortable and feel at home. I would highly recommend this school to anyone who is in town.
I cannot say enough about this organization. If more than 5 stars were available, Id give them all! Our family joined about 5 months ago and currently have 3 children enrolled. The facility is super clean and the staff is exceptional! The instructors are very professional and focus on teaching correct techniques. Its easy to see their genuine care for each of the students. They truly want to see each student succeed in meeting their goals and take the time to help guide and push them in the direction needed to achieve them. Since joining, our children have had a huge boost in self-confidence while learning better self-control and discipline. We love Alliance and definitely recommend it to anyone and everyone who is looking to find a jiu jitsu home.
Absolutely could not be happier that I choose Uzcategui BJJ as my academy to train at! After taking years away from bjj to pursue other competitive sporting ventures I had the desire to comeback and start training again but, finding the right school was my number one priority. Honestly, I knew the moment I walked in the door and was greeted by everyone with handshakes and positive attitudes that this was the place for me. The knowledge, method of instruction and professionalism is well above what you would expect from even a high level Jiu-Jitsu academy and the fact that the facility is always clean speaks for itself. Not to mention that there is also a full gym within the facility containing bumper plates, free weights, kettle bells, bodybuilding and cardio machines and you literally all your fitness needs at your availability 24 hours a day!
As an airline pilot, I travel all over the world. I try to train as often as possible while I am on the road. With that being said, Let me give my honest assessment of Uzcategui Jiu Jitsu...Gym facilities, cleanliness, set-up, equipment: A+ (absolutely first-class)Instruction and training: A+Jon Uzcategui runs an outstanding gym. As a visitor, the class members made me feel welcome. The training was well-presented, as well as technically accurate. Any level player can learn a lot at this gym. If you are in the Wilmington area, this is where you want to train...
I travel for work and stopped in for two nights to train at Alliance in Wilmington. Everyone made me feel welcome, beautiful mats, weightlifting equipment, & a professional environment. The instructor is so passionate & truly a good teacher. Give it a try if youre passing through.
I have been extremely impressed with Alliance. The instruction is great. The workouts are rigorous. And the group is free of the inflated egos. Alliance the gym is super clean, and well maintained. Alliance is the best gym in Wilmington bar none.
This is an incredible gym with incredible people. Jonathan and Hope are very technical teachers, and are very patient and kind. Classes are offered both morning and night, and with your membership you have 24/7 access to their full gym. The members train all the time, and at any point you can hop on the private Facebook group and synch up with a training partner if you want to work on moves or roll—its really a perfect gym
I was stopping through Wilmington recently and looking for a place to train. John and the rest of the guys at his gym were very welcoming and hospitable. The gym itself is state of the art and all in all a great place to train. Whether youre looking to just visit or from the Wilmington area, this is definitely the place to go.
Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I can call that place my second family. I love that gym more than anything. The sport and Professor Jonathan have taught me a lot of things about life and struggling mentally. Before I went to UBJJ, I was overweight, I was closed up and was constantly fighting with my mind. But after about a year going to this gym. I’ve lost almost 7kg, (15lbs) and met amazing people I can call family. I highly recommend this gym for anyone.
Jonathan, Hope, and the rest of the people here are top notch. This is the first gym I trained at and i did not realize how good they were until i left. They are extremely patient and truly do care about the students. Highly Reccomend
If you’re in town and looking for a place to train or looking to start/continue your Jiu-Jitsu journey, this is the place to be. Great instruction and amazing training partners. I would highly recommend this academy
Ive been training here for almost a year now, and I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to learn jiu-jitsu. Jonathan is a great teacher, and is truly invested in his students achieving their goals in the gym, whether its to learn self-defense, compete in tournaments, or just get in shape. Also, even with the odd hours I work, the schedule is arranged that I can always find a time that I can come in and train. All-around a great place to be.
My wife and I had a Challenge to see who was the first to lose 30 Lbs.I won thanks to Jonathan. (90 Days of Training 2 to 3 times a week)If you want to change your life surround yourself with people that are changing theirs. This place is amazing.Ju Jitsu is great for exposing weakness. Then creating strength. Take control of your life, stop making excuses, Start Training Now!!!Giving your Kids the Gift of knowing Ju Jitsu is like giving them Superpowers.Real Superpowers to do hard stuff and win on the mat and win at life. There is no reason to wait. I started at 38 and 225lb now I am in better shape then when I was 18.
I have been training here for a while now. It is a great gym from its instruction to its facilities. I love going in and getting high level BJJ instruction and then having the freedom to get some good conditioning / strength training in. If you are a serious athlete looking to up your game than this is the place.
Great place for anyone to start or improve their training. After a year of consistently training here I can say its been one of the best decisions that I have ever made.
Clean, welcoming academy with great instructors and tough training!
I can’t say enough good things about this place. Awesome modern/clean training facility, great instuctor and students, and a friendly team atmosphere. I’m very glad this is the gym I chose to go to. Come check it out!
I just joined here last week and already know I will be here to stay. Jonathan Uzcategui provides a safe, friendly/welcoming, informative, and motivational environment that can’t be beat. If you want to grow mentally and physically this is the place to be!
When I first walked into Alliance the gym was super clean, and well maintained. And then i met Jonathan, the head instructor, and knew instantly that this was the correct place for me. Everybody is super friendly, and much like family. Brazilian jui-jitsu is very challenging mental and physically, but with great instructors, such as Jonathan and Hope it is fun. It has also helped me adjust my attitude where my family, and co-workers can notice a big difference. I am very grateful for finding Alliance, and Jonathan this place has truly changed me into a better person.
I just joined the academy and Hope and Jonathon were and are very inviting. Having trained at different Jiu Jitsu schools around the country (a little here and there) these folks run a great program and the gym is top notch too. Unlike some schools I have attended everyone is friendly and Jonathan takes care of his students during the training sessions much more.so then some schools I have trained in. And yet they train hard! Very technical techniques and attention to detail...and having come from a Gracie background (even though Im just a white belt in BJJ I have black belts in karate and taekwondo and have studied Jeet Kune Do and Filipino martial arts for many years). I did my research and wanted to find a really legit School. Found it! Come check it out!
My son and husband have been going for a couple of months now they both seem to enjoy it and are learning a great deal!! Jonathan and Hope along with the other instructors are very nice and respectful! Great place to be!!
My son has been training there a year and we could not be happier. Jonathan, Hope, Jeff and all the coaches truly love BJJ and that passion and attention to detail show in their coaching. Large kids class means lots of diversity in training partners. Kids class is broken down by age and skill level for drilling/ rolling and there are always lots of coaches so everyone gets individualized attention. The gym, with state of the art equipment is neat and clean. Our only regret is not finding this place sooner.
I went to Uzcategui BJJ while visiting from New York. Ive trained at a lot of places, including all the big names in NYC (Marcelos, Renzos, Unity) and Uzcategui BJJ is right up there with them in terms of quality. The drilling was technical, the details were subtle, and Professor Uzcategui gave everyone the individual attention youd expect and more. All of my rolls were tough and competitive. I recommend anyone looking for BJJ in Wilmington check it out, regardless of their experience level.
Jonathan and Hope are very welcoming. Extremely clean, high level facility. Jonathan KNOWS HOW TO TEACH BJJ. Love this place and wish them all the best both competitively and professionally
I started training at Uzcategui BJJ in January 2013. Since then I have lost 30lbs just from working out in the Jiu Jitsu classes. I live in South Port and make the one hour drive at least twice a week to train. The gym is always immaculate with everything organized and in its place. The instruction is like none I have ever seen before. Jonathans attention to detail in techniques makes learning this incredibly difficult art a little easier. He is always willing to give extra help and advice whenever someone asks and always helps his students no matter what age or learning ability.I love the camaraderie and humble spirit everyone possesses in the gym, they treat me like family. These guys will push you both physically, mentally and give you a helping hand when you need it. This place has changed my life, making me a better person both in my daily life and in the gym. This experience has been so much more than I could have ever anticipated and I would recommend Uzcategui BJJ to anyone who is looking for an academy to call home.
Great experience at Alliance, Ive trained at different places before, but not the same caliber of instruction and attention to detail. Ideal for beginners and competitors. Brand new facility with great equipment.
The best jiujitsu around NC and possibly the east coast! Having said that I have travel and lived all the over the east coast ranging from Virginia Beach to NYC and I must say that Jons level of knowledge is second to none and the team is absolutely wonderful and makes you feel at home from the very first time you step on the mats! I highly recommend Uzcategui Bjj for anyone of all ages!
If youre all about camaraderie and respect then youll love this place. I have been training here for 8 months and I absolutely love everything that Alliance has to offer. In just 8 short months I have reached new highs that I once thought were unattainable. Thats part of the beauty of being a student of Jons, he teaches jiu jitsu concepts that translate into life concepts. He not only teaches you to be a better martial artist, he teaches you to be a better person in life. Jon creates a positive atmosphere that people of all walks of life can thrive in. Jon is the ultimate professional and his passion is unmatched. He genuinely loves BJJ and I couldnt imagine training under anyone else. Come in and see how Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can change your life!
This program has helped my son in so many ways!!! His discipline, and self confidence has improved so much. He loves this sport!! The coaches are AWESOME!!
Alliance BJJ of Wilmington NC is a premier training facility. The have top notch instruction, excellent quality equipment, well maintained facilities, and an environment devoted to learning and growing. All of the students and the staff make for a great training experience and make you keep wanting to go back.I highly recommend this place for anyone serious about their training in BJJ.
Im in my 50s. I used to be in really great shape up until my mid-twenties. Then I settled down with a job and a family (wife and 3 kids) for the next 25 years. I have an athletic disposition, but I didnt have time to work out. I know some people will say you need to make the time but others will understand how it is building a career and raising a family to the best of your ability... Now, my kids are all out of the house, and my job doesnt require crazy hours, so I took up Jui Jitsu. I got exposed to it through my son who had been doing it for a year or two (before I started). Ive been going to the gym about 3 times a week for the past 7 months (I go 4 times a week when I can, but sometimes I have to travel, or there are events that get in way), and I absolutely love it. Let me count the ways... 1) You get into great shape (cardio and muscular), while youre learning something (runners and weightlifters cant say that). 2) Ive dropped 15 pounds without changing my eating habits (if anything Im eating more - some people have lost 50+ pounds in the same amount of time, though they were heavy to start and I wasnt - Ive gone from 185 to 170 and Im 510). 3) I had pre-hypertension (mild high blood pressure), and now its excellent. 4) I had high cholesterol, and now its under control (did I mention I havent changed my bad-ish eating habits).I cant say enough for the gym. The professor (thats what they call the black belt because it typically takes at least 10 years to achieve a black belt) is Jonathan Uzcategui and he is amazing. He is such a good teacher. I think that some people think hes too tough, but I couldnt disagree more. Hes trying to instill in his students a respect for one another, a respect for the JJ learning process, and a respect for the sport (by the way, these are all pro life tips). Some people just dont like the rigour. But its not like being a Navy Seal or anything - its just basic respect that everyone should have all of the time.Ive never been to another JJ gym, so my opinion here is probably much less useful, but FOR ME, I know this gym is perfect! We typically drill for an hour (that is where you learn a new technique), then you roll for 20-40 minutes (that is where you put your drilling to pracitce against opponents). The rolling is in 5 to 10 minutes sessions against different partners (Jonathan picks the partners); against partners not as experienced as you and against much more experienced partners. Regardless of who you drill with or roll with, everyone (as in literally 100%) of the people I have met in my 7 months are GOOD PEOPLE. Im an Engineer so I find it quite unlikely that 100% of the people Ive met are really solid people (its hardly possible statistically). My conclusion is that either JJ attracts good people (for some reason I havent yet figured out) or Jonathan weeds out people who dont fit, or a combination of both (that is my best guess). In any case, these are all people Id invite over to the house with the family on a holiday (Im serious!). Im being very long winded, but the gist is, this place, the Professor, the students, the program, the sport, are all amazing and I highly recommend it.
This is a very friendly and welcoming gym.
Excellent BJJ training! Family friendly, professional, top notch facilities. All of the instructors are passionate and knowledgeable. Wonderful inspiring atmosphere!
Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been a great experience for both of my children. They offer a diverse number of programs and the instructors are excellent. I highly recommend them!!!!!
Alliance is the best gym in Wilmington bar none. Ive been in the martial arts world for a little over 20 yrs now, and I am so thrilled that I came across this hidden gem. I have been to many (if not all) gyms and martial arts centers through out Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties, and without a doubt Jonathans facility has the best of all worlds. All of the equipment is brand-new top of the line. Everyone, especially the staff, takes pride on keeping everything in pristine condition. The staff are so friendly and personable, they make you feel like family as soon as you walk in the door. The quality of instruction is world-class, Alliances instructors are very diversified so everyone has something new to offer. So even if your looking for somewhere to get in some cardio training or your looking to become a professional fighter, Alliance has a place for everyone, you will not find another place around here that gives you more bang for your buck!
Great gym, great training. Son loves the BJJ, and everyone is super friendly. Wonderful atmosphere to be in.
The Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy has been the most fun I have experienced in years. A little background on me is; I am a stay at home mom who recently started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu several months ago. I have never done any competitive sports, nor have I won any medals in anything. Professor Jonathan and Hope, have steered my training down a tremendous path since I started at their academy. In the last couple weeks the quality of instruction given by Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was proven when I won my first jiu-jitsu competition at the 2018 IBJJF Atlanta Spring Open. Professor Jonathan is not only the best coach in the area, he also teaches and demonstrates a standard of excellence while representing discipline, passion and expertise of the sport. Jonathan and Hope are very welcoming and friendly, train with their students every day, make sure that every student is taught appropriately according to their goals, and welcomes any and all questions. Whether you are looking to get in shape, learn self-defense, compete or just try something new you need to try this BJJ academy!
On vacation and decided to drop in for a class, boy am I glad I chose Uzcategul BJJ! The facility and the mats were very clean and well maintained. The instructor was knowledgeable and very approachable. As a traveling BJJ practitioner, finding a gym that is as safe and welcoming Uzxategui BJJ is an amazing find! I would definitely visit again.
I can not say enough great things about this gym. Great teachers; wonderful people. So much fun!
I cant say enough about the great environment for my three children here! I love the way they are encouraged with love and professionalism.
Fantastic group of people. They made me feel right at home. Top notch instruction. Definitely the place for jiu jitsu in Wilmington!
I began training at Uzcategui BJJ due to recommendations given to me by students of the academy and friends who have trained extensively in other BJJ academies who reviewed all of the academies in the Wilmington, NC area for me. Upon entering the academy on my first day, Jon and the rest of the students welcomed me with open arms. The following months I spent training as much as possible. Jons approach to training, both class content and overall mindset, are a major key to his success and his students success. Every technique is covered in enough depth for all of the students to grasp without going into so much detail that the end state is lost and students leave with their glass overflowing. Based on how well you absorb the technique, Jon will either show you an addition, or have you continue to refine your technique. Additionally, Jon makes his rounds on the mat to observe each and every student executing the technique so that no student leaves with any questions being unanswered.Furthermore, there is continuity throughout the week on the material being taught. There is no show you a move and its 300 variations one day and something completely different the next day.Jon takes a methodical approach to teaching a technique so that all of the students can have the confidence and experience with a few variations and counters to effectively apply while sparring. Lastly, Jon takes care of his students. He will spar with all of them as well as have direct oversight over who trains with who so that experienced members are paired with less experienced members when necessary.By virtue of traveling frequently for work, Ive had the opportunity to train at other academies around the country, all of whom were surprised at how I employed a technique, both during drilling and sparring given the amount of time Ive been training. This is 100% due to Jons approach to training. If you are seeking an academy to learn a proven and effective style of BJJ, then Uzcategui BJJ is hands down the place to go.
The staff is super friendly and amazing with kids.
The Alliance / Uzcategui BJJ experience has well surpassed my expectations since joining in April 2014. As an active endurance athlete but having no experience with the martial arts, my initial interest in learning BJJ was to maintain and improve my coordination, flexibility, and mental discipline in an enjoyable setting, and this has certainly filled the bill. What qualities I feel makes Uzcategui BBJ unique and special are the following:Leadership - The quality of the leadership demonstrated by Jonathan is unsurpassed, as evidenced in his genuine passion for and depth of knowledge in the Martial Arts techniques and underlying physical conditioning regimen necessary for successful participation. Jonathans natural ability to quickly assess then modify instruction to each individuals needs while in a classroom setting is outstanding. I routinely come away from each class with an appreciation of individual attention as if being trained privately, greatly reducing my frustration in learning such an intriguing and complex sport.Environment - The quality of instruction attracts and retains well-mannered, courteous, and motivated students. From day one I felt welcomed and surrounded by like-minded folks who provided appreciative encouragement and support for this 57 year old student. In fact, several of my class members are demonstrating good teaching qualities in their own right, providing valuable support to those newer students like myself. The result is that I walk away from class feeling better than when I arrived each and every time!Technique - An acute attention to detail is emphasized throughout all training exercises, with the time taken to explain its importance and the associated consequences brought on with the use of improper form. Training is interrupted and the sequence of moves simplified as necessary to ensure that the foundational elements are well understood by each student.Equipment / Cleanliness - All equipment is well maintained and state-of-the-art, and selected to complement your training goals. Instruction on proper technique and use is proactively provided from Jonathan and the other fitness trainers. The mat areas, locker rooms, and floors are cleaned on a daily basis, with facility hygiene given a top priority. So if you are searching for a similar sense of accomplishment, fitness, and satisfaction from such an activity, I recommend you give Jonathan the opportunity to experience it first-hand for yourself.Rex
Alliance is an outstanding place to train in Brazilian Jui Jitsu. Not only do Jonathan and Hope keep the techniques on par with the rapidly evolving sport of Jiu Jitsu, but also help to break down the techniques for practical application. As a female, this gives me the self awareness and confidence against bigger/ stronger opponents both on and off the mat.The training is a comfortable atmosphere full of awesome men and women; however if you are uncomfortable training with men, they provide women Jui Jitsu classes too. All in all, you will find a clean facility with useful fitness equipment, world class Jui Jitsu (literally-they have the medals to prove it), and attentive instructors who are focused on pushing you toward your goals.
Whether you’ve been training for a while or want to begin your BJJ journey this is the place for you. Because I travel for work often, I’ve trained in San Diego, New York, and a few gyms in between. Those places are BJJ hubs and there’s no shortage of bad ass gyms. This place is on par with any of those gyms, so if you want to take this seriously, you’ve found your new gym. Jonathan(head coach) is extremely humble and easy going, but when it’s time to train he brings it. He also caters to why you want to do Jiu-Jitsu. If you want to do this just to get in or stay in shape, you’ll get plenty of that here. If you’re a competitor, he’ll get you where you need to be not only compete but to win…you don’t need to believe me, just look at his competitors’ track records. There’s also a full weight set, cardio and strength machines, as well as other fitness equipment.
I have been with Uzcategui BJJ for almost 8 months now. The facility is very clean and well maintained. Their spacious facility also includes an area dedicated to strengthen and conditioning with weights and various machinery. They offer various programs of martial arts and fitness.Their specialty being jiu jitsu. Head instructors Jonathan and Hope provide a meticulous teaching style of brazilian jiu jitsu that is friendly to every belt level and instills a very welcoming enviornment. More impressive is their dedication to their kids prgram. A well organized and structured program centered around discipline while also allowing the kids to really enjoy the sport and have fun. I would highly recommend any prospective students to try them out.
I have currently been under this affiliation for about 4 years and I can honestly say its the hardest Ive ever trained but as is anything hard, nothing but rewarding. I grew up in traditional Martial Arts which was rewarding as well but never gave me the level of physical conditioning and mental toughness I have grown into since begining Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I look forward to continuing to grow and improve as I continue my ascent to black belt and hopefully one day a red belt.
Utzcategui Brazillian Jiu Jitsu and Fitness is one of the best gyms that my son has been too. He has been doing jiu jitsu since he was 9, but he has improved tremendously since being here for 5 months. I love how the instructors are focused on our kids and there are supervision everywhere. Its organized and the curriculum is great. The kids here are awesome and it is such a positive environment for them.
This is a great BJJ school!I am a BJJ Blue Belt and I was staying in Wilmington for 3 weeks on a course and was looking for a place to keep my training ticking over. I have been training in BJJ for 13 years (Im a slow learner obviously) and trained at gyms all over the USA and the UK, some very good, some not so much... so I was a little cautious about going to a new gym for just 3 weeks as I could not afford to get injured on the course I was there to do.Jonathan Uzcategui personally greeted me at his school and listened to my situation. He then arranged for me to have all the access to his gym I needed and was excited to have a guest visit his school. The facilities are second to none with a large matted area, a very well equipped gym and very clean changing and shower facilities.Professor Uzcategui is obviously an excellent BJJ coach but his students really demonstrate the character of the school. His Blue and Purple Belts are all very welcoming, ZERO ego and extremely skilled. The atmosphere is chilled, friendly, fun but taken seriously. Nobody tried to intimidate me, injure me or beat the new guy... It was as if this was my own school. Finally, and another testament to the quality of training, is the very large childrens class as well as the ratio of females to males both in the kids and adult class. This is difficult to do!Whether you are just visiting or looking for a permanent gym to train at I highly recommend Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - thank you Sir!
Excellent Facility - great group on Sunday open classCant wait to be back
Great place too train, not just great athletes but good people! great for competition, great for learning, great for meeting great people!
Jonathan is an awesome and very passionate teacher! He breaks down the moves so anyone can learn it! His kids program is wonderful, with plenty of instructors to handle the classes and supervise technique and makes sure everyone is safe. If you want to learn jui jitsu this is the place to be! You learn technique and when you roll he partners you up with people who know what they are doing so the chance of injury is very small. We drill technique for an hour and he watches and fixes your mistakes before you continue to do it wrong over and over again. If you want to have fun and learn proper jui jitsu then come check this place out! The people are friendly and welcoming, the gym is clean and the facility has everything you need to have a great workout even if you arent doing jui jitsu. I highly recommend Uzcategui Brazilian Jui Jitsu at Alliance World Champion Training Center!
I have been training under Jonathan the last 10 months. I previously trained in Colorado before moving to Wilmington and taking some time off. I knew that I wanted to return to jiu jitsu and felt that Jonathans school was the right fit from me as soon as I walked into the gym. Jonathan was very welcoming and encouraging along with the other staff. The gym is always clean and has lots of options for exercise outside of jiu jitsu. The other students and instructors have always been very helpful and willing to take the time to help me with techniques and drilling. Jonathan has also been very supportive of my role as a new father and has taken the time to talk with me one-on-one on several occasions about parenthood. In my opinion that shows the true character of Jonathan not only as an instructor but also as a friend/mentor. If you are looking for a place to not only train jiu jitsu but grow as an individual then Uzcategui BJJ is the school for you.
Ive trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since 1996. I also wrestled in division 1 college. Ive personally met and received instruction from some of the greatest coaches in my time like Dan Gable, Bobby Guzzo (NC State Coach), Kenny Monday (National Champion & Olympian), Scott Turner (NC State National Champion), Gray Maynard (Michigan State All American), and Jamill Kelly (Olympic silver medalist and Current Stanford wrestling coach). I have been coached by some of the greatest BJJ practicioners such as Andre Pederneiras (Head coach Nova Uniao & Coach to Jose Aldo), John Lewis (American partner with Andre Pederneiras, Verrisimo Charuto, Marc Laimon, Rafael Lovato, Vitor Shaolin, Jeff Glover, Dean Lister, Lucas Leite, Edwardo Tellis, Marcello Mafra, Rodrigo Cavaca and many more. When I met Jonathan Uzcategui, I had enough experience to determine what type of instructor he was. Here is how my first experience meeting Jonathan went: From the moment I walked through his doors I was treated with respect and gratitude. I was introduced to his wife, Hope Uzcategui, who was amazingly genuine. Jonathan showed me the locker room so I could get dressed for class. The moment I walked onto the mats, each and every one of Jonathans students approached me and introduced them selves. This was protocol for Jonathan. He obviously believes, like I do, that jiu jitsu is a brotherhood/sisterhood. I have been in many jiu jitsu gyms from the West Coast to the East Coast and Jonathan has to be in the top 2 for welcoming me with amazing hospitality.Once class began, I realized exactly what type of instructor Jonathan was. He is passionate and extremely self confident. His instruction is more detailed than anybody I have ever met. It is obvious why he has 3 teen world champions, a white belt world champion and a female purple belt champion in only 2 years of operation. He is a brilliant instructor who spends hours and hours working on his understanding Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He believes in his technique and it is evident in his students. His students love him!! Its obvious because at 6 am, there are over 18 students ready and on time to be led by him.One issue Ive dealt with before is ego. When you are the new guy in the gym, sometimes you are the target. This is not the case in my gym and is definitely not the case in his gym. Every single one of his students I trained with worked with me, not against me to make my experience a special one. I dont mean they went easy on me. What I mean is they exercised caution while rolling live with me. Nobody went 150% against me cutting corners at all cost to simply beat me. Every one of his students used proven techniques which made each match feel like we were flowing. This is proof of an exceptional instructor. His students are tempered and as most people know, this attitude starts from the top and trickles down through all the students. When I rolled with Jonathan, I was impressed with his amazing control. Ive rolled with hundreds of high level black, brown, and purple belts before, but Jonathan has the ability to control his opponents without having to rough a person up. Because his technique is so flawless, his guard retention and passing are effortless. Even though I am a black belt and he is a brown belt, he maintained respect and control during our rolls. He never did anything that was out of line nor did he display any form of ego. Anytime he secured a superior position he actually communicated with me to insure I was not in danger of being injured. Sounds funny to say that, but Jonathan is a special kind of instructor who truly lives his passion and because of that he is very efficient. Efficiency in Jiu Jitsu is what its all about. After we rolled, Jonathan was generous enough to share his knowledge with me for at least another hour after class. If you are in Wilmington and you want to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, you cannot skip Uzcategui Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. His gym is state of the art and so is his instruction, attitude and character!
Clean, Large, Great floor mats, Good for Kids. Only 4 stars due to below info.Really wonderful facility and clean and friendly environment. Came into the school as a brand new student nearly two years ago and with no previous rolling or brazilian jiu jitsu training took a class as a beginner. The instructor was excited because I was the same weight class as him and when I met him was genuinely eager to have me join. During the first class the instructor wanted me to roll with him during the rolling portion. He mentioned 3 times during the class prior that if he didnt like you he would make sure you would not come back. I guess he didnt like me since he severely abused me and injured me. He tore my deltoid muscle in my right shoulder, injured my neck, and insulted me when I tapped prior to a finished submission calling me what sounded like wussy under his breath. He may have said something else as at the time I was feeling severe pain throughout my body. The burn from my gi was so severe it didnt go away for close to three months. It was a negative experience for sure and he actually injured me so bad I couldnt work out properly for nearly a year with my right shoulder and neck. I still have injury issues in my deltoid. The other students were very nice and the female instructor was superb from what I saw her working with the kids class and with the other female class members. I wont go back to this school if this is how they introduce new eager beginners to jiu Jitsu. Ive since taken Jiu Jitsu elsewhere and learned that this instructor was abusing me as a new student and that this behavior is not common.I recommend this school to aggressive Jiu Jitsu students who want to compete and to kids program students. This was nearly 2 years ago and write this review now, because I now understand the behavior of the instructor was incorrect. I hope he has since changed his teaching methods and is more inviting to new students. I also hope he no longer tells his class if he doesnt like you he will make sure you do not come back. If you hear these words and you are the only new person in the class, leave.Beyond this and for the time since that incident I still recommend the school as 4 stars. I hope the instructor reads this and realizes his ego that night had lasting consequences.
This gym has helped me in more ways than just Jiu-jitzu. I remember I used to come to the first couple of classes trying to go all out and muscle every body. In time, I learned through the instructor how to calm down and start thinking and start focusing on technique. As I learned to keep calm while practicing Jiu-jitzu, I also learned to apply the same techniques outside of the gym. I used to always get frustrated if things did go my way, but after training and talking with the instructor, I was able to not only be better at Jiu-jitzu but also be a better person in life. The atmosphere in the gym is anything but threatening. If your new, the first thing everyone does when they see you is introduce themselves so you dont feel uncomfortable or intimidated. And everyone is actually very friendly. Another great thing is that the gym also had a great workout area to lift weights. So you wont need to have 2 gym memberships if you like to lift weights too. Also, the bathrooms are very clean and they have 2 showers, so Im able to train and get ready for work right in the gym.
I was first exposed to Alliance BJJ in 2014 at a U.S. Grappling Tournament in Apex, N.C. Having watched most of the event, it sparked an interest into this type of sport. After asking two of my close friends, why they joined Alliance BJJ out of the other BJJ schools in town? ( And please note, that I asked this question to both of them at different times.) They both answered... Because of the Instructor Jonathan Uzcategui is so technically sound. Hes all business on the mat. Safety is always first and foremost. All levels of belts are encouraged to attend any class level. Jonathan knows every student by name and makes each student feel important and like a part of his family! Alliance is a state of the art school / facility. Other BJJ schools have instructors that may teach their discipline part-time or as a second job. This is Jonathans only job, his livelihood, so thats why, when he teaches his discipline, ITS ALL BUSINESS!!! My personal motivation for joining Alliance is for weigh- loss. I havent been disappointed yet!!! These are the reasons I would recommend Alliance BJJ NC in Wilmington to anyone who wants to learn BJJ, get in shape, and have a great family friendly environment to train.I was first exposed to Alliance BJJ in 2014 at a U.S. Grappling Tournament in Apex, N.C. I started Jiu-jitsu back in 2010 after years of competitive Taekwondo. I had been watching MMA a considerable amount with my dad. I was mesmerized by the ground game so much that I tried to learn all the things I could on my own. Eventually, I found a great gym in Chicago under Carlson Gracie, Jr. The problem was that after I moved away for college I couldnt find a great gym to train at, I started to train less and I lost passion for the sport. Once I moved to Wilmington I decided to look around and see if I could find a place to start up at again, thats when I found Alliance. First off, I want to say the facility is fantastic and there is so much mat space. The training is top notch and the people are great. The head instructor Jonathan Uzcategui is a great teacher and helps out whenever you need it. If you are looking for a place to train where you will ACTUALLY learn jiu-jitsu then go to Alliance.
Very high level jiu jitsu gym. Lots of High level guys and beginners, IBJJF gold metals on display, large, clean, new facility. Part of Alliance family. If you want to train REAL Jiu Jitsu for competition or self defence or fitness this is the place. Joined after first class. Friendly guys and girls, great place to meet solid friends and better yourself. If your thinking about trying jiu jitsu try here first!
I strolled into the Alliance Jiu Jitsu gym one evening to learn more about their training and fitness programs. I was curious and looking for something different from the same ole, same ole workout place. I was a competitive swimmer (as a kid) and played small time college football, so Ive had plenty of experience with gyms. The Alliance facility is very nice. The first class they loaned me a Gi and showed me how to tie my belt, I was/am a total rookie but they made me feel completely welcome. Ive been going to class since November 2014 and Im lovin it; I had no experience with any type of martial art prior to starting Jiu Jitsu and Im learning tremendous jiu jitsu, fitness and self defense skills. Every class I go to I learn sooo much and Im getting into great shape (this is NOT your average fitness program). It is hard to explain, but once you start training here it clears your mind and it goes beyond fitness or even sport. I flat out feel better, despite how brutal (in a good way) some of the sessions can be. Note: Youll find whatever range of intensity youre looking for here; competition level or nice and easy skill development. Jonathan Uzcategui is the head instructor and he does a phenomenal job. Hes teaching technical competition Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and he has the ability to break it down and show you the fundamentals and the advanced techniques (for folks who are at that level or want to be). Uzcategui is a VERY good coach and has a wide range of skills (supported by real life experience) to help you reach your full potential. Not only will Jonathan teach and coach you specific skills (moves), he gives you core principles as the foundation. Over and above the facility and high quality of coaching and instruction, this is a fun place to be with a great group of people. I highly recommend it and Im fortunate to have stumbled upon Alliance BJJ gym. Thanks Jonathan and Hope for all the hard work you all do. Oh, I should mention, they also offer kids classes - again, great experience - great for kids.
For the past 5 years I have bounced around trying to find a jiujitsu academy that would push me to be a better jiujitsu fighter, I really didnt want another feel good jiujitsu academy. Well I found it here weather you are an active competitor or just an advid hobbist this is the best place in the area hands down. OSS!
I have trained a couple different places and Alliance is deffinitley the best place i have been. Everyone is really nice, they come up and introduce themselves as soon as they see you. It is a technical gym forsure so you are learning everything the right way. They train really hard, after one month of training here you will be tapping out people that have been training for months and months. This gym is very sanitary they sweep and mop after every training session. If you are looking to start jiu jitsu this is the place to be.
