Ordinarily I’m more forgiving when it comes to reviewing health clubs but I’m sad that a club with the kind of reputation of NYSC, and especially being in the particular space and location they inhabit; is in such a state.Where to begin? The equipment is dirty and outdated. The dumbbells on the racks are completely out of order taking valuable time away from your workout while you try to make sense of why the 20lb weights are next to the 75lb weights. The wipe dispensers are empty and the bags pulled from them as members try desperately to find a way to wipe down their equipment before/after use. The towel receptacles are overflowing and in the men’s locker room, dirty towels litter the floor. The unisex restroom is also littered with dirty towels and used paper towels. There are three employees working today. One of them is wandering the lower level with his face in his phone, headphones in his ears. The second is at the desk, with a basket filled with folded clean towels behind him waiting to be put away. The third, the cleaning person; appeared only once in the two hours since I’ve arrived.I came here because I will soon be working very close by but for a gym in West Hartford of all places to be in this kind of state, I am in shock. I will not be joining after my free trial.
I love going to the gym .every one is so nice especially when I walk in always greeted by Gerry he is always so friendly and kind. Very helpful. The other young who is on the desk his name is Guy he has been working there for a while always greet me by my name and ask me how my day is going,. both young men are always so kind .The place is so clean, pool water is clean. On my way out they always ask me if everything was ok . And tell me to have a good evening.NY S C is lucky to to have Guy and Gerry working there. I have been going to this gym for about 8 years never saw better works then those young men. Thank You Theresa Rogers
Underrated gym. Love the staff and the equipment
What a disappointment. Just moved to the area and this is my first time joining a New York Sports club in over 10 years... should have more carefully examined the condition of the equipment and the “fine print” in the agreement that I allegedly signed. I made an attempt to cancel today because it appears that most of the equipment hasn’t been updated in years, but was told that I needed to meet the manager in person and only during two limited time periods each week to cancel my membership. The snarky front desk rep also said I was told this when I signed up. They sure make it easy to join… But try canceling. Apparently there is also a form that I can fill out and send via certified mail, just to make cancelling a little more difficult.Who knows what other penalties they’ll attempt to stick me with. On the plus side, the place is fittingly very very cheap so I’ll chalk it up to a lesson learned!Unfortunately, this entire region is lacking a high-end high-quality fitness center... if anyone is interested in opening a “Chelsea Piers” type of facility in the area - let me know and I may help evaluate the opportunity and provide financing. I believe this region is ripe for this type if facility.
The atmosphere was so pleasant. They have big screene TV. A magnificent bar. The staff was very pleasant as well
Please, for your own sake, never join this gym. Super easy to join, impossible to cancel. Tried to cancel right after the re- opening of Covid. Charged me over 100$ to cancel, 2 months membership, yearly fee, and cancellation fee. if you ever want to feel scammed and taken advantage of, this is the right gym for you.
I had high hopes for this gym when I joined, the front staff was friendly and the gym it’s self seemed clean. Unfortunately I was let down. The gym always has broken equipment, there’s always two or three treadmills that are broken amongst other machines as well. The pool is nice but it often closed for maintenance as well as the whirlpool and sauna. There has been a broken sign on the same toilet stall in the locker room for months and the locker rooms are at times pretty unclean. I went to this gym for location purposes only after seeing all of that. The front staff remained friendly but was rarely available for even check in. The worst part about this gym is their customer service after you try to cancel. As soon as you mention the word cancel they deem you dead to them. I tried canceling back in December and was told I had to speak to the manager to do so. After asking to cancel with the manager I was told he wasn’t in so I had to come back a different time because they only work between the hours of ten and seven. I moved out of the area so having to return was annoying but I did so and when I was there I was told there would be an additional fee for canceling plus payment for the following month was needed. So after paying over a hundred dollars just to cancel I was assured my membership was cancelled but that was not the case. So I again reached out and the situation was handled very poorly by the manager on duty, Tanya. She told me I must be confused or mistaken about what I was saying to her amongst other things and only refunded me for a forth of the money this whole situation cost. The money the whole ordeal cost isn’t the reason for this review but the poor customer service alone is. As a business owner I would be horrified if my staff spoke to a patient with that level of rudeness. I would advise you go to planet fitness if you’re looking for an okay with a gym that’s dirty with broken machines, bad management and a terrible cancellation policy because it would definitely be a cheaper waste of your time.
I shouldve read the reviews before joining. I joined on 22nd and paid $29 for August first month then tried to cancel cause of moving out of state. I called them on 14th to cancel cause Im not in CT nobody answered the phone. On 15th they charged me $75 for annual fee. I drove all the way to CT to cancel in person and asked for refund instead they charged me another $10 for cancelling. So basically nysc charged me $115 for 20 days? And Im still trying to call the corporation but still nobody answers. Thats not a professional way to treat the members.
Very sleazy management. If you join be prepared to get ripped off for a few months of your membership fee. NYSC club told its members they would be refunded for the time it was closed because of Corona. But they keep charging. Ha ha ha.Managers routinely are never available to return calls despite promises to do so.NYSC is a dirt ball organization and there are a lot worse things than Covid running around its halls. West Hartford has a lot better gyms to choose from.
Just joined last week but so far happy I did. Great atmosphere, not a stressful place at all. Good prices and a pool to boot! Relaxed, mind your own business kinda feel. And no pressure from staff about membership packages or signing up for classes etc...
Moved out of state, wouldn’t let me cancel my membership online or over the phone because of “policy” yet charging me over the phone is acceptable. Scammed me out of 50 bucks. Don’t go here it’s honestly pretty dirty too
Whirlpool down again. Been broken most of the year. I asked to turn down the techno funk music and was told the staff were not allowed to change the volume or the music because it would break. It had to be a manager. I asked to speak with a manager but no one was available. The cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired. Other than convenience, I can’t recommend joining the West Hartford NYSC.Long time very disappointed member
Sign on the door says temporarily closed, but also states the lease was not renewed. This was discovered October 5, 2020.
Great local gym. Lots of equipment. Friendly staff. Awesome, qualified trainers.
Be careful when signing up and cancelling memberships. When I signed up I was told there was no contract/commitment and I could cancel whenever I needed to. Three times I tried to cancel my membership (in person and over the phone) and each time someone had to leave a message for their manager and 2 months later I am still paying the bill. One of the guys who answered told me I would be refunded but the latest I was told was that I had to wait 90 days for the cancellation to go through (while still paying). There is also a $10 cancellation fee on top of it. It would be so nice if just one gym could have a no contract plan and actually stand by it.
Good gym while I was there. Had to deal with some serious headaches with improperly receiving bills long after I cancelled and moved. Make sure when you cancel in person you receive proof of cancellation via email so this does not happen to you.
Dirty gym, old machines, unfriendly Staff, they continue to charge you even after canceling your subscription for six months and even after your visit them many times trying to cancel, the business model is based on continuing to charge people even after they cancel, it’s a fraud it’s unethical and unfair. Zero respect to the customer their time and their money.
Not a bad place, I like its location. Nice mens lockers, the pool is nice, have not used the sauna yet...There is only one thing working against the location, its the location...It is a small gym, which I like but, one squat rack..???!!!
If I could give less than 1 star, I would. This gym is failing and therefore they will stop at no cost to charge you unreasonable and undisclosed fees. I joined here to utilize the pool in conjunction with physical therapy to heal a major back Injury. The person who signed me up insisted I would have ZERO fees other than my month to month membership fee. My physical therapist recommend I no longer use the pool as it was adding to my injury so today I stopped in to cancel my MONTH TO MONTH MEMBERSHIP. The people at the front desk wrote my name down on a post it note, and said Tanya will call you today to discuss your cancelation. When I received the call, I was informed I will be charged a $73 annual fee (which I paid upon signing up) and an additional month of membership fee because of the 45 day notice and a $10 fee for cancelling in general. None of these fee were signed by me, and I was assured I didnt need a copy of my membership agreement. This is not how you help people get to a a healthier place. There are gyms out there willing to help, not gouge there wallets. New York sports club is only there to GOUGE.
Ive been working at NYSC for over a year. It is a great environment with a membership base that has a great attitude towards fitness. Management is top notch and in comparison to other gyms, if you ever need to cancel, they afford you the option to skip the hassle of sending a certified letter and let you just cancel in club. Floor trainers are always around to help with fitness related questions and managers and fitness consultants are in during business hours to help with any membership questions! As a member of the club, I prefer this gym as it has a good crowd, but also everything I need for a great workout without overcrowding that you find at most gyms especially in January.
Staff are nice but jacuzzi is down for weeks at a time every other month. For the high dues we pay, this is totally unacceptable.
For much of October 2019 the lap pool has been broken, the hot tub was broken all summer. Much of the cardio equipment is broken, there arent enough light weight free weights and the place is pretty poorly maintained. This is an expensive gym that only has location working for it.
It appears some of the equipment and accessories at this location have not been updated or replaced or even maintained properly since they first opened. For a premium gym and premium monthly dues, the upkeep of this gym should be taken more seriously. Some of the equipment feels unsafe to use like the cable cross. The tension on the cables are very lose, and clearly have not been replaced or have scheduled maintenance. NYSC is lucky that they are the only gym currently in this area otherwise they would be losing a lot of clientele. I have been a Town Sports International since 2006 and this location is probably one of the worst up-kept locations. Shame on this management.
Don’t ever get stuck in their billing system. Not sure who is the customer here. They say they will email you a receipt but never do. They don’t keep track of anything so you have to keep track of everything for them.I’ve had 4 billing issues in the past 2 years. Promotional does not go through; charge for two active accounts at the same time; $76 cancellation fee when I renewed contract; and my final cancellation. They will claim you (the customer) are lying, they won’t record anything, and they won’t send anything they record. You can expect charges to your credit card but no receipt, records or reasonability here. This type operation should be illegal.Make sure you record everything you talked about, the person you talked to, and any witnesses. Don’t bother calling because apparently they don’t keep a record of that.
This place is the worst managed gym I have ever been to. The staff is extremely unhelpful and rude. The weights are always left all over the place. There is only one squat rack! The freezing fee only gave me five dollars off when I went abroad for the summer. Even with that, they ended up messing up and freezing my account only for one day instead of two months. This consisted of me having to come in multiple times for them to fix the issue when they billed me for double months. Many of my friends have left the gym for similar reasons but I didnt think their customer service experienced could have been as made as they made them seem... turns out, they were correct. I do not recommend this gym to anyone.
Great equipment. Nice sauna and pool. Great location. Easy discounted parking.
I am a current member. Great gym and so convenient.
I must say that Ive been searching for a great location to work out and get myself back on track health wise and I believe I found it...the nysc is a wonderful gym and the staff there are very incredible and helpful...i love the judgement free atmosphere and the helpful trainers who are very knowledgeable and attentive...the trainers provided a wonderful experience..I was there a short time but the whole staff was very polite and customer service oriented....i look forward to signing up in the near future 😁
Good location, friendly staff, reasonable price. Unfortunately the gym etiquette is pretty poor so the place can be very disorganized especially when its busy. In need of an employee to walk around putting weights and equipment away. Could use more small weights (5lb - 25lb) and clips. Some equipment could stand to be replaced.
Good. Starting to get a little run down
Love it there. Friendly and helpful staff, clean, and clean restrooms, wheelchair accessible for pools, never had to wait to use equipment, lots of cardio machines, plenty of sanitary hygiene stations, lots of lockers, clean locker rooms and showers, several areas for calisthenics, sauna, hot tub, therapy pool, and swimming pool 3 to 6 feet deep, I believe, and rarely not enough su poly of towels, so always have a towel in your gym bag, just in case.
I had too many extra fees taking out of my account. I was told a few times that it will be fixed and then another staff will tell me that they can’t fix it.Too much miscommunications from staff to staff. I just can’t deal.
Good place for workout, swimming, and members could get their car parking validated.
Staff is polite and helpful, but the membership termination system is frustrating and unreasonable. Charged over $100.00 beyond what I used for not withdrawing my membership 30 days in advance. Too much fine print and fees for a basic gym membership.
Ok I joined this gym ONLY because of the location (I also used to be a member of NYSC in NYC). I went for my first day and this has to be the worst gym in the best location I have ever been to.Problems after ONE DAY working out there: Numerous machines are incredibly old or broken, TVs are missing or don’t work on many machines, other members don’t wipe machines after use (YUCK what is wrong with these people?), the locker room bathroom was disgusting and dirty and one of the toilets broken with yellow caution tape across the stall, every towel cart was overflowing with dirty towels, only a few new machines that work and are always takenImprovements that must be made: get some new machines, especially more new ellipticals because they are always in use, get another abdominal machine because the one you have is always in use and people stay on it forever, install FANS in the gym please the place is hot and stinky, hire people to clean more often and empty the towel carts, hire people to fix broken machines, hire new management clearly whoever manages this gym doesn’t care whatsoever about maintaining this facility properly or they don’t have the resources I am not sure what the issue isYou would think this gym should be $5 a month but it’s not so this is unacceptable and sad - especially for a NYSC! Hope someone who can make a difference reads this - 1 star gym in a 5 star locationPS BRING YOUR HEADPHONES TO BLAST MUSIC SOYOU DONT HAVE TO LISTEN TO OTHER MEMBERS BLABBING ON THEIR CELL PHONES THE WHOLE TIME YOU WORK OUT - NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR YOUR PHONE CONVERSATION!
Absolutely horrific staff. Clean house. Get new management.
You get what you pay for. Best gym, great staff, super clean, excellent equipment
Very good facility, the Jacuzzi breaks down too often but other than that, a very nice place
Staff at front desk helpful. Love jacuzzi, saunaand therapy pool great.
Terrible customer service. Better options in town. No parking. Avoid this place at all costs.
Qualified staff and instructors, focus on members health and well-being, high customer service values, and clean facilities.
Decent mid-rate gym.CONS: Staff always look like they have ZERO time for you and the entire place is a little moody. Gym members are on average 50 and white and cranky and from WeHa. (Other gyms Ive worked out at tend to have a WIDE range of gender, age, and race. Not being 50 or from WeHa, this wasnt super welcoming for me.) You need to sign up for classes a day in advanced and they dont have a lot. You have to pay for parking too, which if you work out regularly doubles your membership. Manager talked down to me when I asked about changes in membership, which is presumably because Im young and chubby, when in fact Im a business owner obsessed with fitness.PROS: Pool is nice and its never crowded.VERDICT: I left Big Sky a year ago to try NYSC and I totally regret it. They axed most of the perks of membership from when I joined in 2014 so Im going back to Big Sky (which I LOVE A TON).
Great place but not as good as the one I used to go to in Forest Hills in Queens. No steam room and you have to pay to park.
If ypu wantto get in shape this it he place
Clean, awesome classes, nice locker room. Great location and hours.
Good so far. Dont like the freeze fee.
Great place to work out and swim too
Good basic gym with classes and pool.
Due to Covid,
Thats a gym, love to work out here.
Nice facility. Clean. Some equipment issues.
I phoned to cancel my membership in April, and was told it would be taken care of. Today, in June, I received a phone call saying my membership had not been cancelled and that I owe for 3 months. These people are INCOMPETENT.
Super friendly staff
Snarky people at the front desk
Great place....convenient and friendly
Love this place
Thanks for services
