This is probably one of the best gyms Ive been to on a military installation. Very clean, employees are kind and helpful. The gym has a HUGE cardio room thats pretty empty most of the times Ive gone. I advise avoiding lunchtime if you want to get lifting in. That area is smaller but all the equipment is in working order so thats a plus.
I really like the gym, lifting area is a little small but definitely gets the job done. The area in the gym makes up for it. My real gripe is that they close the sauna for cleaning in the last hour, I get off work and come here right after work and already have to somewhat rush my workout as they close at 1900. So I am basically never able to use the sauna after my workout now that its open...
The vibe of this gym isnt there. Doesnt feel like a good energy when you walk in, this could mostly be attributed to there not being enough equipment/weights, and no organizational flow. Another one of this gyms faults is its always busy after 1500. If you plan to go after 1500...plan to do calisthenics or cardio because you wont be able to get everything you want done as far as equipment wise. Ive walked out 5 mins after walking in by being so frustrated after work that i couldnt get a good workout in. It smells consistently terrible by the front entrance when you walk by the racquet ball courts. Weekend times have gotten worse over the 6 months Ive been going to this gym. One positive thing that drew me in to this gym is that while working out either cardio or weight lifting a mask isnt required, like other gyms on the bases in this area...for now. Staff is very friendly and nice as well.
This place closes too early and should be open until 2200 at least every day of the week. They told they close at 1900 so they can clean better for COVID!
Whats up with all these cycling machines taking up the volleyball space?? Its about time yall take these bikes out nobody ever uses and give it back to the volleyball recreation. Put up those nets!
Decent gym. Did a big reno, place still looks the same. Should put doors in to separate the toilets from the locker room; those protein dumps flood the whole place. Could also use half of the basketball court floor for more workout equipment. Hardly anyones playing full court anyway. Need more bottle fill fountains, like 5 more.
Great staff, awesome place
You retire and then they limit when you can use the gym. No one is in the gym early in the AM yet they want dependents and retirees to come in at the same time the military goes to lunch! That doesnt help with social distancing! Honestly, retirees and dependents can get in and out with plenty of cleaning time if youd allow us in there when the military should be AT WORK!!!
This is a decent military gym. It needs a bit of an update and can get crowded before covid. But now most of the gym is closed as a precaution and you get medical checks coming in.
Great gym great lyft had everything you can ask for. !!
The better gym, bigger and more equipped than Norfolk station.
My favorite.
If youre looking for a gym, then look no further. This is a gym. Do you play basketball? Theyve got those here. Do you lift weights? Then your wait is over. Do you bike? Ride on over. If you drank water and need to get rid of some, then come on over and get your sweat on. Disclaimer: Motivation not provided
Great place to workout
Very clean, few people, masks required. Seems like in a normal world it would be awesome.
This is a great gym. They have a great spread of classes, helpful staff and good equipment. If you want to bring someone without a valid ID they will have to pay a guest fee of $10. Saunas in the locker rooms. For the yoga lover, I suggest the Tuesday and Wednesday classes at 1130. If you want to be challenged, they hold a class in the racquetball court Friday at 1400.
Gym is currently closed,Nutritional consultant forBoone clinic is openYou need a referral fromYour doctor.staff members areGood.
Great gym
This gym is unacceptable. It’s extremely dirty, crowded, the hours are weak and the staff are terribly inefficient and waste your tax dollars.I wonder if they don’t have health and cleanliness standards to uphold because they’re funded by tax dollars. It baffles me how so many people work here but can’t keep the place somewhat tidy and clean. The equipment is dated and to get any type of auxiliary gear, in the unlikely event they have it, you have to ask for it at the desk.If you choose to bring your own they won’t let you in because you can’t bring a gym bag.I wish they would just close it and pay the active military more for a civilian gym.
So happy its open again for retirees!!!!
The Rockwell Gym is well kept and highly used. The parking situation is limited, and its often difficult to find a spot. The staff do a great job keeping up with cleaning for the most part in most of the gym. They really need to close the very popular free weights area for a thorough hose down with some disinfectant and deodorize the whole area. The smell is almost as bad as the mens locker room which makes me nauseated. I avoid both areas on most days. They are opening a newly remodeled ”Pay” locker room which is truly needed. I plan to become a paying member to have a cleaner locker room.
The gym opens at 5am on weekdays. They are numerous machines to choose from. They offer free classes to anyone who has access privileges to the base gym. There are showers and lockers as well. The staff is friendly and they provide clean towels at each visits when asked.
Great place to do some classes and work out! I had fun doing the boxing class!
This is a great on base gym and has a wide range of equipment and work out spaces. It is nice that they offer a family fitness room, however I was very underwhelmed by the actual use of this room with my toddler. You either need to keep your child occupied by a phone/ tablet or bring toys as it is just an area to keep them corralled rather than having a few options to keep them entertained. The addition of even a couple kids toys like wooden cars or other mechanical toys would be wonderful.
Great free place to get in a workout for military active & retired. Mens locker room needs total overhaul and some competent people to clean it.
Excellent facility. They have something for everyone here. whether youre just starting out or are serious about fitness they have something for you. Large gymnasium, kick boxing room, racquetball courts, weight room, cardio rooms, large track and field next door, locker rooms and showers. Ive seen a sauna in the locker room but havent tried it. Would highly recommend
Love this gym! Always clean, friendly staff, and tons of equipment for all workout types & fitness levels!! My family and I love to stay active and there are a lot of family friendly areas and some classes that we can all do together.
Due to COVID they currently close at 1500 on weekends, vice 1600.
Great gym, great hours! So great its hard to find parking.
Old, but Great Navy gym. Lots of room, inside and out, with a large variety of new and well kept workout equipment. Multiple basket ball courts for various activities and an outside track. One of the better gyms I have seen in the Navy.
Im a mum. So I love any place that makes provisions for you to have your child with you. I love the family room at the gym. There should be more treadmills in the family room as they always seem to be occupied.
Great family workout room with treadmills, elipticals, weight benches, weights, and two kids play areas: one for 2 years and younger and one for 2 years and older. Has TV and lots of circulation. AC is great
This is a beautiful gym, I love the equipment and the staff. I wish they were open longer, especially on the weekends.
Great places, plenty of things to work out with, friendly staff
A pretty good Navy gym. They dont allow chalk in the gym area which is a disadvantage to alot of lifters, like myself. When your hands sweat alot, its hard to keep a good grip. The gym has made improvements and are currently working on improvements. Thats a big plus. The dumbbells could go heavier. Id like to see them go up to 200lbs.
Pretty good, they need to fix the air system though. Can be pretty packed during peak times, expect to wait for equipment.
One of the better base gyms around. Been here for spin class a few times and the instructors are great. Love the layout, plenty of equipment for cardio as well as strength training and lots of room for activities!
Great gym for Us Armed forces to PT and friends/family to work out or do Cardio.
I like to call this the big boy gym. There are some fit women too. Staff is always friendly. The B-ball court is nice, weight room has just about everything, cardio room also well equipped.
No longer allows guests
Awesome awesome awesome.. they have workout classes that are amazing!!. Huge gym.. tons of workout equipment. Friendly people . Love this place
Good gym but can be busy during peak hours.
I love this gym. Racquetball. Boxing. Cardio. The family gym is the only reason I come here. I can work out and watch the kids on the foam play mat and tv. All in the same room.
This gym has plenty of equipment free weights, machines, and cardio equipment. Its usually pretty packed between 1600 and 1800. They have a sauna in the locker room. They also have 3 basketball courts, a volleyball net, fitness classes, 2 racket ball courts, and professional consultations. The front desk has all the equipment you need to do any of these activities. Make sure you check the schedule for basketball games, volleyball games, or fitness classes because they will kick you out of that part of the gym of on of those events is going on. They do not have much for Cross fit, if thats what you are interested in I would recommend going to pierside gym. But overall this is a great gym.
I have never seen it crowded. The workout classes are good as well. The only problem is that it is a cobble together of buildings and you have to go oitside to get between the buildings.
I go 3 times a weeks and get right. The personal trainers are approachable and works with you without hesitation
Group classes are phenomenon and convenient. Trainers and staff are very experienced and personable. When they greet you, they smile and it is genuine.
The gym is small but really its never to pack where you cant get a great workout. For example if you want lift but the area is packed, im 100 percent sure cadio machines are open and by the time you get some cadio in the weight room is clearBest times to go is 8am and 2pm
Awesome staff but I wish they would give their locker room an update.
I love the outdoor connex. Never had a gym with such a variety of equipment. I also love their soft boxes for box jumps.
Great gym. Lots of well maintained equipment. Clean facility. Friendly staff.
A great gym with a variety of things to do.The only down side is that its usually pretty packed with people, but not to the point to where you cant usually get a good workout in.
Nice sized gym with more than one basket ball court, a volleyball court, spin classes, circuit classes, weight room. Pretty crowded though, even with the gym being large. Parking is a problem in front of the gym
Not really too big and usually kinda packed, but pretty good if you go late.
Very clean and nice staff!
Needs to accommodate heavy lifters. Very limited at higher caliber lifting
Great gym. There are more equipment on the basketball court for powerlifting
Great place to workout, very friendly staff.
Odd hours but great facility for any thing you need to get or stay in shape
Clean and large plenty of room for your whole command or just you
Great place to work out excellent trainers.
Awesome Gym!
Love the gym on base there is even a family area where the kids can play and you can do cardio
What a workout! Good facility.
Best gym on base. Everything you need. Plus a place for kids
Huge gymnasium space. Adequate free weights. Plenty of cardio.
Good equipment. Clean. Lot of stuff to do. Classes. Can get crowded at times.
Cant beat a free gym. Needs some love but the equipment us grrar
The worst fitness facility in the Navy.Free weight areas are scattered about in random corners. The main free weight area doesn’t come close to being large enough for all the patrons wanting to use it.Always over crowded and humid with a constant smell of dirty gym shorts.Rockwell does not have a functional fitness area. So if you show up thinking you’re going to do some Oly lifts, you’d better zero out your expectations. Oh yea and don’t bring any chalk to this place either because the MWR people who run it are more concerned with keeping it “clean” than enabling heavy lifts to be done safely. The cardio equipment isn’t much better. If you want to run on treadmill you will more than likely be staring at a wall. Honestly I could go on and on but unless the Navy bulldozes this dump and builds a facility worthy of a 21st century military I wouldn’t waste my time.Go to the Y or the VB rec center instead.Hooyah
Premier Navy base gym. They have a huge gym, tons of weight equipment, cardio, machines, classes, locker rooms with showers, sauna, steam room, and a Family Room. The building is rather old. The showers smell funny and Ive seen bugs several times, but the equipment is all in good condition.
The hours are getting worse and worse. Unacceptably short on weekends and fridays
Good place to get a workout in, but the lifting area should be bigger and there should be more squat racks
Very good gym, with weight, cardio, racketball and boxing rooms, as well as saunas and a basketball court.
Gym needs a makeover its been pretty much the same since I joined.
Great facility. Lots of up to date equipment.
Its on the base so its not accesible to the general public, but the facility is awesome and always clean and the staff are lovely. I come for Zumba classes and to use the treadmill and weightroom, and its all really nice.
A good place to workout. Some of the equipment could use some updating.
Weight room is never crowded. Squat racks are hard to come by, but everything else is open. Cardio is crowded in the morning.
Great variety of equipment. I wish the hours were longer.
Thru have every equipment you can think of. Nice place to workout.
Best military gym in Hampton Roads.
Very nice gym. They have so much space to work whatever muscle groups you need to work out.
Only thing lacking is a pool! Great cardio, cross fit, gym, free weights & machines, plus a ton of instructor-led programs.
Great on base gym. Basketball court, cardio equipment, strength training, a lot more.
Great gym with plenty of equipment and hardly seems packed.
Decent gym. Weight lifting area is small and always packed.
Staff does a good job with what they have, keeping it relatively clean and in order. Facilities are in poor condition and not enough equipment for the number of people using the place.
Great gym. Crowded between 4pm and 6pm
Great gym. Significantly larger than the one at Oceana
One of the better Navy gyms Ive been to.
The physical therapy is the best
Great Gym not as packed as Norfolk
New equipment plenty of space
Out of the base gyms this one is probably the best, it is clean and has a great amount and variety of equipment and space, locker rooms are outdated as they are at all places and their parking lot is overcrowded at peak times, front desk personnel are always extremely helpful though
Great equipment, plenty of room with a variety of choices.
Gym hours are not good, early opening is more for the active duty
Great facility and nice staff. Classes are challenging.
The equipment is good and organized and the staff is nice
