This experience was refreshing! Our group had a hands down 5 star experience. Captain Jake is cool and down to earth. He went above and beyond to assure we had an awesome day. I highly recommend.

This was my first time out on a fishing charter. I was with 5 other amateurs and Captain Jake was very helpful and knowledgeable! We kept him busy, helping us un-snag our lines, refilling the bait tray, unhooking fish, all while navigating us to some great hot spots for sea bass. We are excited to book another trip with Matador Charters!

We had a great time fishing with Captain Jake on The Matador. He knows his stuff and knows where to find fish! He was very patient with us as it was our first time deep sea fishing. I would definitely recommend him and plan to book again for next year!

5/5 for Matador Charters! By far some of best all around saltwater fishing trips we have been on. Captain Jake, Shawn, and the crew of Toro have put us on fish year after year out of Virginia Beach. Capt Jake and Shawn are extremely knowledgeable of these waters and know how pattern fish in all seasons. We have always been treated with respect and have felt like a part of the Virginia Beach fishing community when we are with them. I very highly recommend this private charter company. The captain was extremely nice and had such a great attitude. We were allowed to bring the Go Pro, so we got great footage of the 3 sharks we caught on our 4 hour trip. It was tons of fun and we would definitely book with them again.

I have fished with or chartered Jake many times over the years. Have caught multiple citation fish and even a state record during those trips. If there is a fish out there Jake will put you on it. We always come back with full boxes and a lot of laughs. Anyone that says different never really fished with him. Looking forward to another great year !

Matador Charters has been our go-to fishing charter for years. We always have the best time and he definitely always puts us on the fish with endless hours of fun reeling them in all day!! As a mama of 5 sons who love offshore fishing, I can’t recommend this captain and crew enough!!

Had a great time on the water with Captain Jake today. We caught a ton of fish and had great conversation. Definitely recommend him and will be booking with him in the future.

Only problem with this boat and captain is that we ran out of room for fish. The day was amazing and I came away with a new appreciation for fishing in VA. We even had a boat lunch of Ham Sabdwiches. Later met up with the Captain at the Hotel and had a great time. My buddies were the worst part they just couldn’t keep up. Will definitely do it again!!

Our man Jake was by himself jumping all over the boat untangling lines, unhooking fish, and dealing with snags all while keeping us on the sea bass. Excellent day of fishing. Highly recommend.

Captain Hiles of the Matador is hands down one of the best captains out of Virginia Beach you will ever fish with! I had one of the best experiences with him You should probably call him the meat hunter he will put you on the fish faster than a cheetah on an Amtrak roller skates!

We caught a white marlin in the first 15 minutes. A couple dolphin a few minutes later. Things died down a little once it warmed up so we bottom fished and caught a slew of good size fish. The only negative of the trip was this one guy kept yapping about how socialism would save the country. We eventually threw him overboard and had a lot of good laughs about it while reeling in our fish and drinking our brewskis. One hell of a fisherman.

Cant believe what I am reading on this Captains customer service buried in post. Could be one of the best Charters in the world but see any of my money. Sad.

Capt Jake is one of the top fishermen out of VA Beach. From inshore to offshore he has always put my family on a fun-filled packed day of bent rods and plenty of meat to take home. Please disregard the negative reviews left by others, Capt Jake goes above and beyond each and everytime.

I have Fished with Captain Jake 10 different times and each time we either caught limit or caught citation fish! I’ve been in shore, off shore and in the bay with him. I’ve gone striper, marlin, tuna, red drum and shark fishing with him. I’ve never had more fun and caught more fish then when I’ve gone out with him!

In fact we caught so many we decided to fish for some other species because we were getting worn out. Also, I noticed him go out of his way to help out another boat in distress with all different races aboard..Highly recommend if you are looking for a great charter experience .. I wish I could give 10 stars instead of 5. He has the VA state record for the largest TUNA!!!!!

Had a great fishing experience with Captain Jake and Sean (Mate) on Labor Day. The Captain worked hard to find the fish which resulted in every person in our group catching at least one King Mackerel in addition to bringing one nice size Cobia on board. Captain Jake and Sean are a great team and clearly responsible for our success. We are already planning for next years outing!!

Was saddened to hear they openly refuse customers based on political affiliation. Crazy.

Id like to give negative stars if possible. Since when did fishing become a political activity? Fortunately there are other boats in the area that believe in customer service.

I was looking forward to booking a tour when our family comes to visit, but I’m shocked to learn we won’t be welcome.

What an experience! We just recently booked an offshore trip with Captain Jake out of Virginia Beach and what a great day we had! 3 ladies and we all caught a white marlin! I was able to get a picture with my marlin and was the best time ever! One of the guys also caught a white and blue marlin, so of course he was excited! we couldnt have done it with out an amazing Captain! Cant wait for our next trip!

Fun, friendly staff and beware the boat is big but it Rick and rolls around even on a minor wave day. Can bring everything or they provide it food drinks, beer and beer is very reasonable 2.00 can or 8 for 6 pack . Just dont drink and drive home have a buddy that can drive, they dont play in VA. Advice bring some extra bait if you want more than squid and the sinkers way to heavy 8oz

Capt. Jake Hiles will give you a comfy ride aboard the Matador. The fishing is a bonus as compared to the things you may see if you charter for an offshore trip. Sea turtles, whales, dolphin pods and, if youre lucky, you may see marlins breaking the surface. Or tuna in a feeding frenzy. I have not been on the Matador since Capt. Jake just did a major overhaul, but I look forward to it.While catching fish is not a guarantee on any charter, Capt. Jake will do his level best to get you on the fish. Offshore and inshore. He has tons of experience and has the networking to give his customers the advantage when heading in search of catch!Get in shape so you can crank in the big ones aboard the Matador!I can tell you first hand, its an experience you dont want to miss!

Highly Recommend. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.7/31/14 ~80 F, calm winds, and fair seas.430 am: Met Cpt Jake and 1st mate Mike promptly at Rudee Inlet in Va Beach. Brought a cooler with drinks/sandwiches. Mike debriefed us on a loose schedule of the days events. Targeting sport-fish ~70-75 miles out in the Gulf Stream. 3 hours there and 3 back. 5 of us: four men and one 100lb 18 year old woman (who reeled in bigger and as many marlin as the men).830 am: Reached the Gulf stream, Jake and Mike deep bottom fished for live trolling bait called Tinker Mackerel.9 am: As we were catching Tinker, one white marlin hook and catch930: Still filling the live bait well with Tinkers, literally watched a white marlin come up to the side of the boat and take one of the Tinker off a rig that had not been sent out yet. Thats 2x white Marlin before 10 am.10-12pm: Trolled and caught a few more white marlin12-2pm: Continued to troll; caught a mahi mahi, a few more white marlin, and a ~50 lb yellow fin tuna. Stopped occasionally to get some more Tinker, resulting in a byproduct catch of a ~20lb gray tilefish (delicious table fare).2-3pm: Had 5 white marlin hooked at once. Youd think it be chaos on the deck, nope, Mike and Jake guided us through the situation, landed 4 of them. Do NOT yank hard on the pole, itll rip the bait/hook right out of the bill. Dammit. Jake will let you know what to do and not to do.3pm-6pm: Headed home. Fish were cleaned at the dock for a very reasonable price.Delicious table fare for many and 10 white marlin catch/release memories and some awesome pictures.Bottom line: Trip of lifetime and will join Jake again ASAP. The price is cheap in relation to the experience and expertise of this Charter and Captain. Tip the 1st mate heavily (at least 20% of the trip total). Bring drink/food. Be ready to have a great time. Awesome Awesome Awesome. Overnight Offshore Trip:I want to start off by saying I normally dont take the time to fill out reviews but after fishing with Capt. Jake Hiles for over 12+ times I felt it was time to let everyone know who and what to expect when fishing aboard the Matador.Day 1:Started off deep dropping for Black Sea bass, and Blue line Tilefish and we caught our limit. As the evening came we tied up just off the Norfolk canyon and started chunking for Tuna. Well 30 minutes later all of the lines started running. To our surprise it was not tunas but a load of 9 to 12 foot sharks. We released two 9 foot Dusky sharks and lost about a 12 foot Mako not to mention several that cut the line. Fishing got cut short around midnight due to a storm but it blew out of the area around 4:00 AM.Day 2:The sun was rising and since I was one of the first to wake up I assisted 1st mate Jarred in setting out the lines for the troll. 15 minutes later we had a White Marlin in the spread. We caught and released a total of two White Marlin the fast trolled our way to a area where there had been some tuna bites. Unfortunately no Tuna wanted to join the fish in the box. So we ran for home, and on our way in Capt. Jake spotted two big Cobia lurking around an inshore buoy. We landed one of the two which turned out to be 45lbs. Now thats the way to top off a trip!!If you are ever in the VA area and you are looking for a seasoned Captain please give Capt. Jake Hiles a call. Inshore, offshore he is simply the best. I will say if you want to go Offshore take advantage of it, and book an Overnight trip. For a few extra $$ you get a ton of fishing time in for the money as well as a big box of fish.The accommodations are more than adequate. The Matador sleeps 6 comfortably, and the boat has a very smooth ride even in rough waters.Already looking forward to booking my next trip.....
