I requested a Tahoe type vehicle, however when I arrived they representative advised that there were no vehicles of this type available (of course was disappointing) since I had family coming to visit and we were 7 plus luggage. However, the gentleman who did attend to my reservation (sorry to say I do not recall his name) was accommodating and assisted me in acquiring another vehicle that met my needs. The process took a little longer than anticipated since I needed to see the vehicle I would be provided prior to leaving thus my rating of 9. No qualms with the service at the location just not able to rent the initial vehicle requested. As for your representative, I would give him a 10+.

The rules/regulations in Payless Car Rental agreement first say that a $200 minimum/maximum security deposit will pend against a credit card for incidentals. The attendant charged me $250. When I asked why, he said it was because of me prepaying for my rental car. This made no sense to me, but what was I to do, I had to have my rental car for my trip. I was then charged $47.03 from my security deposit which I did not approve and there is no explanation for! I did NOT take insurance, I returned the car with a full tank of gas and I did not need a toll pass. NOT HAPPY!
Let’s start by saying … Do NOT RENT HERE .They will not tell you the charges . The representative made me signed paperwork . He said there will be a 250 dollars hold on your card .Then it proceeded to charge me 217.00 for what ???They need to be more ethical !State your prices . We rented a car promised it was available and ready to go when our flight landed and double check they would be open since it was a late flight they lady said yes no problem. We land into Tampa with three kids and one baby to find out they were closed. So I called their 1800 number to find no help and they wouldnt even compromise us with a hotel so I could get one of their cars on the morning. They ended up not trying to help us at all and just refunding my money without a sorry or even have a better day. 3am with three kids and a baby we couldn’t even get a Uber since we didn’t have a car seat for the baby and was renting one from Payless.So if you need a car late at night don’t contact Payless car rentals. Better yet with the lack of experience and even customer experience I will no longer use ace or Payless car rentals. Super nasty people with terrible manners!! Buys bewareNeedless to say I WILL make it my mission to keep people away from Payless and ace since they continue to screw me all night and lied about services.
I waited 40 minutes on line to check in. When I got the Rental it had a huge scratch on the door and I had no one to talk to about it. There was no one available and it was impossible for me to carry all my luggage back on the elevator to go back upstairs and wait on line again. The woman at the exit gate said nah dont worry but I worried the entire trip. When I dropped the car off I tried explaining about the scratch but he ignored me. Terrible customer service.
Absolutely worthless. I got a car from these guys and it was completely undriveable after some point. Customer care is not very responsive and they are rude. I dont suggest renting from these guys at all.
Hidden charges even after declining all add on with the cashier. An already $503 rental for 5 days turned into $623 for no reason after we dropped off then later when States away at home get the e-reciept so we cant talk to the cashier

If I could give this company negative stars, I would. I made a reservation for April 4th (Eastwr) at 6:30pm. I arrived on time in Tampa to pick up my vehicle. When I found the Payless counter, it was vacant (closed). No signs, no warning-just empty. I called the Payless customer service # and no one answered. I had never rented a car in Tampa before and had no idea what to do. I asked the other car rental companies beside the Payless counter why Payless was closed but no one knew. Since it was a holiday, I could not locate another rental without paying double. For the next 2 hours I was stranded at TPA until I could locate a driver. I ended up with no rental car, 100.00 in Uber fees and a lot of stress. This should never happen. Obviously, I will not use Payless.

I was nervous to rent a car here because of the terrible reviews. Fortunately, we got quick service, a nice and clean car, and flawless and quick return. I guess the key is to get your rental car early and drop off early before the long lines begin. We picked up at 7:30am and dropped off at 7:30am. There were no other customers there when we were picking up. There was only one car in front of us at drop off. We got a Nissan Altima. It had a few scratches and dents on the outside. I took pictures in case they tried to blame the damage on us later. Inside was clean and the car ran well and safe.
The customer service rep Anna is the absolute RUDEST person I’ve ever spoken with on the phone & ive encountered some pretty rude people but she takes the cake ! DO NOT EVER Rent a car because when your going to need to call customer service your going to get the most miserable person you’ve ever met ! I will never go back per her . Who not only gave me a hard time with my refund but I had to call back the next day because she refused to let me speak with a manager & had me wait both days for over 30mins to “talk” to her manager who’s apparently nonexistent.also never apologized! If I could put negative stars I would !
I rented an suv during the pandemic. When i arrived no one was working the booth so i had to go somewhere else to get the rental. The windsheild was dirty like someone had sneezed on it. As soon as I turned the car on it said maintenance required. It dinged every 20 miles telling me it needed maintenance. I used the windsheild wiper fluid a couple times and it was out. It also dinged every 10 mins or less to tell me it was low. I had this vehicle for a week. Imagine how annoying the dinging was and on top of it all I paid 400 dollars to be aggravated with the rental the whole week and there was no one there to talk to when I dropped it off.
This company doesnt have any focus on customer satisfaction. The rate was advertised as the lowest on Southwest Airlines, I got a quote for $120 online then get to the airport counter in Orlando and their price is significantly higher and it totaled $225. The car itself was fine and got me from Orlando to Tampa. Of course Life happens to me and my plans changed, so I asked for my rate to be recalculated for the time used (current market rate for 1 day) plus drop-off fee in Tampa so I could fly out right away from here but they outright refused to work with me. They would keep the full amount and still add the drop-off fee to that. Not only am I going to lose money for time not used, but I am forced to drive it back to Orlando. They can wait, Huh Payless?? BE AWARE: If your travel plans change, do not expect this company to work with you whatsoever.
Very kind, very easy! They didn’t make it difficult for me at all, other rental Companies make it hard for me to get a rental due to my age being under 25yrs old. But everyone was kind and very helpful
The only problem really was upon rental at counter. There were about 30 people in line with only 3 at the counter for 3-4 car rental companies. The agent kept trying to talk us into an upgrade (for about 10 minutes!) claiming that we wouldnt fit into the small car I had rented (yet she refused to tell us what kind of car it was). Mind you, we are 2 normal sized women and two suitcases and personal carry- ons. I kept declining politely. It was unreal, especially with all of those people waiting she kept at it. we finally got to our car and it had more than enough room fro four people with bags, let alone two. wow. I mainly felt for the poor people in line.
When I booked you gave me an estimated bill of $116.82 for the period of my rental. When I checked in at Tampa airport (which took 45 minutes) the agent aske if I would like to upgrade to a Standard SUV and that the total charge for the upgrade would be $30, so a total bill of $146.82. When I returned the car my bill came to $317.66. More that double what it was supposed to be. Thats way out of line.
The only employee working at the Payless counter at the airport was wearing a mask but it did NOT cover her nose. There was a long line of customers, whom were wearing masks. Fortunately, another employee came to help out and he diverted us to another employee downstairs. The woman that helped us was wearing a mask. I regret not saying anything to any of the employees. My experience with the car was great.

Shuttle service wait was long. Shuttle bus stalled twice on the way to rental office. Water leaking inside shuttle bus from the ceiling & A/C vents, falling on travelers. Lack of personality from the staff, rushed through the process. Might as well have spoken to a kiosk that dispenses keys for my rental. My rental vehicle was clean & ready, bit of tire pressure issue but I made it ifficient. Will think twice before renting from here again
The car was clean. The customer service representative was knowledgeable and prompt. He was very patient with a customer ahead of me, explaining to them all the reasons for their bill. The customer service agent was named Luis! I would have to say I received the same excellent customer service.
I read the reviews and was concerned about renting a car from this company. I arrived at the counter and had a short wait, the woman at the counter was very friendly she helped me with a few questions I had. I returned later and there was a different woman working she was very pleasant and professional. I used a debit card there was a $200.00 hold put on the card this did not bother me I was told this upfront. The process was painless she did ask if I wanted insurance, an upgrade or if anyone else would be driving. This is normal practice. I did pay extra for my daughter to drive better save than sorry. I got a 2019 Hyundai Elantra with very low mileage and no damage to it. The return process was also painless took less than 15 minutes. There were no extra charges on my card. I had a very good experience with this company. I would rent from them again. Five stars for this company.

DO NOT RENT with Payless Car Rental in Tampa, FL.Agent 46751 apparently makes a habit (see many similar stories) of charging extra services, assuring you that the difference in price (nearly double our quoted reservation) is only a deposit and will be refunded upon return of the vehicle - seems reasonable, why shouldnt you believe her. She then proceeds to rush you through the process of signing, distracting you and covering important language with with her circled markings so that you dont notice that she has in fact added insurance and roadside assistance to your rental. PLEASE read that there are dozens of postings with the exact same story - this is very much a habit for this agent.Customer service is of no help in resolving the issue. After all, you have signed for these services, but only at the very dishonest direction of the incredibly shady agent.If you do decide to book with Payless (we generally like Payless and have rented in other cities without isssue) BEWARE of agent 46751 in Tampa, FL.
I wish this was a better experience, they claim to open at 5:00am and that they are at the Tampa airport. They are not located at the airport but they do run a shuttle. They also claim that the shuttle starts at 5:00am. We arrived at the airport at 4:55am and expected a shuttle soon after, I called multiple times never getting a response. Finally around 6:15 the shuttle showed up, we made it to the rental place after a 15 min drive. As we entered the rental place we were the only customers there and expected to get our car shortly. We waited over an hour before we were given our car! The woman that helped us, Alison, was very friendly but that doesn’t change how terrible the overall experience was. We had the car for a week and needed to return it at 5:00am when they open, I called over 20 times the evening before to make sure someone would be there and that the shuttle would be running so we could make our 6:20 flight. A man answered twice and asked me to hold and then hung the phone up after I waited 10 min each time.Tomorrow will be when we drop the car off, I’ll update the review to let you know how it goes.Update: I was pleasantly surprised, they opened right at 5:00am, I was the first customer with four others behind me within 15 min we were all taken care of and on the shuttle and made it to the airport quickly, much better than what I had expected.But overall they are very unprofessional and I will never use Payless ever again.

My car was not ready at the time of pick up. Car was not cleaned, There was vomit and urine smell in the car. I didn’t realize right away. Until unfortunately i was on my way to my destination. I had to deal with the smell the whole weekend. I would think due to covid risks payless employees would follow CDc guidelines. Im very disappointed. It wasn’t a cheap rental and this is unacceptable.
Had a great experience with Payless. Booked car online for $31, and noted on their web site that they give a 29 minute grace period. So, if your car is due back at 10 pm, you actually have until 10:29. I returned it at about 28 minutes into the grace period, and the women charged me $17 for an extra hour! I mentioned the grace period, she said she never heard of it and Id have to call customer service. Well, I went inside and spoke to the manager, and he happily credited me for the charge. :)
Brought the van back with a full tank of gas and was still charged for the gas $47.55 Also, when I went to return the van the girl couldnt find my reservation and argued with me that I might have rented from another company. First time I have used payless rental car and it is gonna be the last time I do.

I will echo others experience and add my own. I waited 20 min for the bus and found a 30 min line at the office. I came in with a reservation quoting $103. The clerk gave me an estimated charges sheet showing $269 even after Id said no to the insurance. Hed taken off collision but not liability. The next time he ran the estimated charges it came to 179 and again I refused to sign. He kept trying to tell me that these were only estimates and I wouldnt be charged that amount. When I continued to object he tore up the latest estimate and printed one showing the $103 Id agreed to online. He acted exasperated as if I was the unreasonable party. These guys are crooks. If you rent from them be prepared to work hard to get the quoted price, and be super careful about noting the condition of the car. Oh, the car I got was fine, nice even, except that it was not entirely clean inside despite stinking of something, probably cleaner. Ive not yet returned the car, and hope for no trouble at that end.
This company said they issue your deposit back in 14 days and here it is I do not have my money. I will never rent from them again. They take your deposit very easily but will not give it back. I am giving this till Monday and after that I will be filing against them. Do Not Rent From This Company

SUV key fob would not work called and they said we will be right there 1 hour later called back they said they never received the order another hour goes by and they said they are putting the order now. 3 1/2hours later still waiting
Please, please, please folks spend the extra money on a different rental agency. Ive used Payless three times and each time has been a disaster. The most recent experience was the final straw. I rented a Chevy Malibu at the beginning of December, when I returned the vehicle everything seemed fine. Their employee ran a diagnostics test and inspected the vehicle, after inspection he told me everything was great. More than two months later I received a statement in the mail for $185.00 in glass damage, they then charged my credit card. I have called and emailed the company numerous times about the charge. They wont tell me if anyone rented the vehicle after me, why it took so long to notify me, if there were any photos or evidence of the damage, or why the inspector told me everything was ok. One would think $185.00 of glass damage would be easy to spot. They keep telling me I have to pay for damages, which is fine, I just want proof that the car was damaged by me. I am pretty sure it is a scam, and I am going to share my experience with every review platform I can find. Good luck.
Do not rent here. These people did not do what they told me. It has cost me money and hours of my time. They only care about their company and could care less about the customers convenience or the customers money. They have a terrible customer service system. The call center is not on location at Tampa, but they tell you you must speak with Tampa to accomplish anything other than extending a rental. Im stuck in a loop, unable to get help, while they charge me money. This has been going on for two weeks and I still cannot get anything accomplished. They are now sending letters telling me I will be charged more. Im still in limbo with no way to contact them to begin to resolve the issue- while still being charged by them.

As others have stated, this company is a sham. It takes FOREVER to get your car, even if you have a reservation. If there is even one person in front of you, expect to wait much longer. And do not leave anything behind. They will either throw it away or steal it. I told them exactly where I left my lost object, and they have not contacted me to return it. Also, when you finally get through their horrible phone directory, you will find that it is incorrect. The lost and found extension transfers your call to a CRUISE COMPANY! When I finally got someone on the phone from Payless, I told them this and they said their phones were messed up and they didnt care to fix is. The cruise company was clearly frustrated since this seems to happen all the time. Avoid this company.

No Payless counter at the Tampa Airport. The first car battery died twice had to have it towed. I spent more time on the rental than I did with my family. Rude people at the avis counter picking up the car and dropping it off. I want a refund
Their counter was closed at airport with a sign saying go to budget counter. There was a mile long line. A customer leaving said it took them an hour and a half to get thru the line. May try to cancel and use someone else.
I had to wait about 20 minutes to speak to the counter agent. However, he was very friendly. They didnt have a full size car that I reserved, so they upgraded my to a minivan at no extra charge. Drop off was easy. They were substantially cheaper than the major rental companies in the Tampa Airport ($197 vs $350 for a 9 day rental). I did not take their optional insurance coverage for about $25 per day, which in my mind was a huge rip-off. Most rental companies charge similar outrageous loss damage waiver coverage. The loss damage waiver would have been more than the entire rental cost. Just skip it if you can, as most private insurance policies cover you for your rental car, as if it was your own car (subject to a deductible).Also, take the car with a full tank of gas and return it will a full tank of gas. There are several gas stations no more than a mile south of their location on N. Westshore Blvd. They charge $10 per gallon if you dont fill it up!Overall, very pleased with the rental and would use them again.
The agent was awesome. The car had a few dings and scratches but it was late and it was the last car left in that size so no big deal. The car also had some mechanical problem. Sometimes didnt start, sometimes couldnt lock or unlock the doors. Probably a bad key fob. Despite the problems with the vehicle itself, I would highly recommend PayLess at Tampa International Airport because the agent was really wonderful. Such a nice experience when youve been traveling all day to encounter someone who greets you with a smile and genuinely seemed to enjoy his job.
The absolute worst experience Ive had. The rental vehicle was changed 2-3 different times. Then I was charged for insurance when I asked not to be, and then ask for reimbursement or refund and they didnt do anything. THEN I left my tools in the rental and their throwing me through loops, saying TPA police will have it, I went there, nothing sent back to them its just completely ridiculous. I will never ever recommend them to anyone.

For the price, I was pleased with my experience. I had zero complaints about the customer service reps when they were dealing with me. I actually think they did a great job, considering how many customers were being so demanding (3 in the 15 minutes I was there). They remained calm and still called everyone sir and maam. Courtesy bus driver spoke animatedly (French) with friend the entire time from arriving at Payless, dropping off and picking up passengers, arguing with passengers and driving back to airport. When exiting the lot, he cut three lanes over, ignoring other traffic in the process of passing the bus. Fortunately they all were able to emergency stop in time. Bus driver didnt even realize what he just did.This is sad as other staff at Payless is hard working dealing with customers buying cheap and expecting premier service, and doing a commendable job.
Called multiple times and no one ever answered the phone. This place is not actually in the Tampa airport; a shuttle should show up in about 30 minutes. Expect it to take over an hour both picking up the car and dropping it off. In good news, the car was very clean.
I made a car reservation over the phone for June 7-13 over the phone with a guy name Albert, I ask him if I could be able to check out as fastest I can, once I get to Payless to pick up the car, since I have a sensitive situation with my son being on the airplane for a couple of hours and we need to be on are place were staying ASAP because of my son. He was very helpful, patience and polite!! hopefully everything goes smooth and they can help me. Whatever it happen ill be coming back to leave my review after.

This company has an “F” rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB). That should tell you all you need to know.There were three groups ahead of me, and after waiting in line for 45 minutes (only one attendant working the desk on a Saturday afternoon) I was told they were waiting for cars to be returned. They literally didn’t have cars available despite a confirmed reservation. When I asked how long of a wait it could be, the attendant shrugged and said “we don’t know.” No attempt at accommodation or reassurances. I don’t necessarily blame the attendant, it simply appears this company runs a shady operation and cares little about their public reviews as evidenced by no responses to all of these negative reviews.I won’t be using Payless again and I’ll be actively advising against it.
Worse rental place I ever rented from! Expect a wait of at least 30 minutes in the Florida heat to even get to the facility. The car I received was very dirty and smelled like smoke inside. I got charged an upgrade when I didnt ask for one. Keep in mind there is a $6.00 day charge for just walking in the facility. My advice, rent from a more trusted and accommodating car rental service like Enterprise or Hertz, they may be a little expensive, but they truly care about their customers happiness; unlike Payless Rental.
I booked everything in advance. Shuttle from airport to car rental was short and timely. Con-waiting in line to see a representitive. Total time was forty minutes. Second con-while the price quotes to me online was cheap, there were other fees tacked on in person including taxes, insurance for not being completely covered by my own insurance(this is fee Im going to look further into because before when renting in Florida, theyve offered their insurance as an option not a must and when using my own insurance, other places verified coverage with my insurance company which Payless did not do), so total for four days in a standard car I paid $204 which is more expensive than what I paid two weeks ago from a car rental place in Florida for a week and the same car class. In addition, there was one employee seeing the line of customers until a customer in line asked if there was an additional employee available. Face to face interaction was also slow. Employee kindness was average. Do not expect a car walk around or explanation of anything. Once the keys are handed over, youre on your own to find your car according to the assigned space number and also to figure out any control features. Advice, do your own walk around to make sure theres no body damage and test out the controls to make sure everything works. Take a picture of gas and mileage readings before proceeding to your destination.Overall, I do not recommend Payless Car Rental. Main cons: additional fees from Internet quote, wait time, short hand experience to figure out vehicle on your own. Advice: rent through Tampa airport. Many options with cars available on site and it looked like there was a more professional set up from what I could see.
Worst experience .... EVER8:30 PM Called from courtesy phone for shuttle as instructed, was told 10 minutes wait.After 30 minutes, no shuttle. Tried calling again, no answer.other customers were waiting and trying to get information.At 9:25 the shuttle finally arrived, driver apologized and said that they had run out of cars, but were cleaning some.I said I would take a dirty one to get on my way.Although the shuttle was almost full, he had to go to a second pickup point where there were over 12 people waiting. He could only take 2, and promised to be back for the others in 5 minutes.On reaching the office, the young guy had a horrified look on his face ( yes there was only one clerk) He apologized for the delay, then told us that the computer system was down, and that it would take 20 minutes to process each customer !!!!!At this point, I cancelled my booking and left.Having seen previous reviews, I did want to give Payless a fair chance, but never ever again.Addendum - Payless replied and asked me to call to discuss my experience - the number given was either constantly busy, or just cut off after being on hold for many many minutes.No more chances Im afraid.
There was nothing wrong with the rental car,service was slow. I mean very very slow. If youre returning a car and have to catch a flight, be there 3 and 1/2 hours early to be on the safe side. Besides the long wait, prices are very reasonable.
Terrible service. Staff has issues with understanding. I declined everything and was charged an extra $200 at check out. I had to stand there and keep explaining what my rate was in order for them to understand and take the price down. They finally (after 3 tries) got the amount down to $148 and I just let it go although I brought the car back early, clean and the amount I was supposed to pay was $108. Crooked company adding extra fees to get more money out of you. Never again will I rent from Payless, Avis or Budget. Thats what I get for trying someone new. I usually go with Hertz or Enterprise.
As a Licensed Insurance Claims Adjuster I know to take pictures of a rental at the time of pick up and return. The Tampa location does not offer walk arounds nor do they give you the paper to note vehicle damage. In fact, when you pick up they print your agreement and tell you which space the vehicle is parked. The assumption is you will get in and drive off. Once you do they got you! They do not tell you to walk the vehicle and come back if you notice anything. If there is any physical damage to the vehicle they will actually tell you its no big deal. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS. Make them document every scratch, ding, and or dent. Payless came back 3 months after the return of a vehicle and charged $300 for a light bulb and mirror that was not damaged during our rental. We are disputing the erroneous charge, but consumers beware they are shady.
After the horrible service at Enterprise Car Rental, I went to Payless for my car rental. There was a little glitch in the paperwork although nothing Robert couldn’t take care of. Perhaps Enterprise need to send their employees over to train with Robert so they learn about customer service!
Fair prices and often times cheaper than most competition. Ive never had any serious issues so far as customer service is concerned. The only problem Ive experienced with them was the first time I rented a car from them they never made any mention about having a utility bill on hand to prove residency. So the second time I rented a car from here, I didnt bring a utility bill. The manager saw I used them before and made an exception for me and got me on my way. Ive never spent more than 10-15 minutes max waiting.

Wish Id looked at the reviews more before booking here... this place is TERRIBLE! To the point Im filing a Better Business Bureau claim. Seriously. Had a firm price on my reservation, and the employee at the desk had me sign a form for more money before I picked up the car. After showing her my reservation price, she assured me the extra charge was just a hold on my account while my credit card was being processed, and that once the car was returned, Id be refunded that amount and only paying the amount on the reservation... FALSE! They charged me the extra amount, and after disputing it with them they basically told me tough **it you signed it. Definitely will never be renting from here again and hope this BBB claim gets me my money back... Long story short. DONT RENT FROM HERE. Youll get lied to and charged extra for nothing, then their crappy customer service will do absolutely nothing to make the situation right.
No problem. Found a rate and class I liked. Got what I asked for. Customer service was polite. Minus 1 star because the windows were dirty.
Like countless other reviewers, would give zero stars if I could. Very shady. We ended up going back to the airport and renting from Hertz, got a nice compact car for $20 more than Payless was going to charge for the week. Worth the peace of mind of not having to deal with those crooks. I already called my credit card company to alert them of potential fraud after my interaction with this company. Stay away!
Quick shuttle, fast service, great price on a new Taurus! Although the reviews looked pretty bad on this company, I had a surprisingly good experience. Make sure you know how much youre paying and what kind of car youre going to get in advance. Also make sure to leave time for the shuttle to pick you up because the office is not on the airport property. That said its a lot cheaper and not a bad option.
Rolled the dice and very pleasant experience. No economy car avail and got a free and quick upgrade. Shuttle driver was great, check in lady was super and had good advice regarding toll roads and gas fill for return. Ill use again.
My mom and I were visiting Florida for a week. We reserved a rental car at Payless online. We waited for over 30 minutes at the airport for them to come pick us up. Once we got there to get our car nobody was at the counter but we could hear people chatting in the back. Finally we yelled for someone and a nasty, rude woman came out and was less than helpful. She was extremely rude to us. She went in the back without telling us what she was doing and then came back out and said hey dont have any cars even though we reserved one. We asked how long it would be and she said she didnt know and that they have a new system and its been going on for over a week. They dont have cars for anyone so to either wait or go back to the airport. Then finally they got a car for us and when we checked out there were many hidden fees in the price. Be careful with this company. Even though we ended up renting a car from them, their customer service is horrific!!!!
I hardly ever give reviews. 1. They had no idea I had a rental appointment. 2. They didnt have the van ready, heck they didnt even know the van was on their property. When he couldnt find it, he tried to rent me two min vans. O have no idea how he expected me to drive 2 mini vans. After I refused, he went on the hunt and It took them 45 minutes to find it (they have one of the smallest rental car lots. How he couldnt find it, is hard to grasp. 3. When they found the van, it was incredibly dirty. So I had to wait another 40 minutes for them to clean it up 4. The service was a zero. They get a half a star for breathing. I certainly hope I never have to rent from them again.
Writing this review while in line. I’ve been waiting for 45 minutes. Still haven’t been attended to and I have about 10 more people in front of me. There are only 2 customer service representatives for a line of 50! Ridiculous service!
Picking up the rental car went well. No surprises. However, within a day the key fob stopped working and I couldnt start the car. I called Payless and was given two choices: Fix it myself or they would have the car towed all the way back to Tampa (I was in Sarasota) and they would fix the problem or replace the car. Since, I was in Sarasota to care for an elderly relative the thought of wasting half a day getting the car replaced did not appeal to me. I googled a Youtube video, then walked a mile to a store to get a new battery for the key fob. Walked back and replaced it myself. I consider this a learning experience and an opportunity to learn something new but honestly Payless should have a plan for replacing batteries before they die. The person on the phone told me that they would reimburse me the cost of the battery if I saved the receipt for them. The car ran fine after that. However, returning the vehicle was also very stressful in that there was quite a line already at 5 a.m. and my receipt wasnt handy and I didnt want to add to the stress of checking the car in by fumbling for it. (My fault.) Then shuttle driver was quite late (first shuttle of the day) and I barely made my flight on time. If I had missed it I would have been very angry and would have given Payless one star instead of two. However, that didnt happen but next time I fly in to Tampa I will use an on-premises rental car agency with a better reputation.Also, the restroom was out of order.
While inexpensive, they arent exactly my number one choice for car rental.
Horrible! Lied to me and stated the gas tank was full when in fact it was near empty. I didn’t realize it until I had arrived at my destination. I had to return to the airport to remedy this and a manager said they would reimburse me for the tank of gas. It’s been 5 days with no reimbursement and the customer service call takers are in MEXICO and unhelpful. I’ve been calling the Tampa airport for 5 days however I’m continuously routed to Mexico! I will never use Payless again. Deceitful.
Cant complain ... got a great deal. If you have chase credit cards upgrades are 70 percent off.Shuttle service to and back from the airport is very helpful.
SAVE YOUR MONEY, SAVE YOUR TIME. DO NOT BOTHER. WORSE COMPANY EVER!!!. Was asked to produce my electricity bill to rent a car. Are you kidding me? Fear based sales tactics. Wasted 1 hour to get the car and decided not to rent from these people. Absolutely horrible experience. Couldnt get in touch with the manager to get any refund.They lure you in with the best rate over the internet. Once youre in then you pretty much end up paying at least double than what it was supposed to be. Tried disputing with the credit card company which didnt help since Payless policy of refund (one of those fine prints) prevailed. My hard earned money is down the drain for not even renting from them.
The line was extremely long but the customer service rep. that I dealt with was extremely helpful and nice. I was very satisfied overall (minus long wait time in line)
I was skeptical about Payless while reading reviews. I decided to give them a try a couple weeks ago in Las Vegas despite the reviews and had a wonderful experience. No issues whatsoever. Fast forward a couple weeks I am going to Tampa and need a rental car. Despite bad reviews again I decide to give Payless a shot in Tampa because of my good experience in Las Vegas. The only reason I am giving two stars is because pick up was fast and easy, shuttle was on time for both pickup and drop off, and car was good. The problem is with my bill, and Im having to deal with customer service over email who is not listening to anything I am saying. I was quoted $57, and my bill is $126. Fuel charge and extra day charge is justified, but the rest of the additional charges are just pulled out the ass. If somebody was actually being helpful in adjusting my bill, I wouldnt be leaving this review.Update: they refunded me $12, after what felt like pulling teeth of manager Jim from corporate not listening to me. I should be refunded closer to $27, but ill leave it at this.
The Payless at Tampa Airport is horrible. I had a reservation for an economy car. When my flight landed at about 9:00 pm, I went to the counter inside the airport and started the rental process. The agent was a white female with shoulder length dark blonde/light brown hair. I dont have her name but I think her agent number is 46751. She has three kids, the youngest is a daughter of 11 years old. We also talked about the toll for the Skyway Bridge. She asked if I wanted insurance and I told her that I did not want any insurance on the vehicle. She said ok and presented me with a form where she had six circles written for me to initial. I initialed them and did not see where she had me accepting the insurance. One of the circles she had written was partially over the accept. However, I trusted her to do what I asked and not include any insurance. Also, I told her I would bring the car back with a full tank of gas. I did, and I have proof, and was still charged for gas. I have now been charged $134.00 more that my rental was supposed to be. Payless is refusing a refund. Additionally, when I rented the car, this agent booked me a Kia and wrote a parking space number down. The car in that space was a Ford. When I tried to leave the garage, I was told that the Ford was rented to someone named Bobby and to go back to fix it. I went to the counter in the garage and they changed cars and I did not sign a contract for anything. Additionally, I questioned the original agent about the amount shown on the credit card terminal and she said that it was a deposit that would be refunded and my charges would be the correct amount. NEVER rent from Payless at Tampa International Airport. If you do, check every single word of the contract for someone trying to scam you out of money. The agents probably get a commission for it.
Spring Break and lines everywhere - Not at Payless. I had read all the terrible reviews and was hesitant to book with Payless, however they were considerably cheaper than everyone else. The best news of all was when I arrived, TPA had totally revamped their car rental hub so Payless is now on site at the actual airport with all the other rental car companies. When I say every other rental company had a minimum of 10 customers in line I am not exaggerating. I walked right up to the counter immediately. The only reason I am not giving them a 5 is because I had to stand and wait about 10 minutes for them to secure a vehicle from another one of the companies. I believe they have to share part of the others fleet of cars. In addition, I asked for and was confirmed to pay for an upgrade. When I got to my spot it wasnt an upgrade at all. Fortunately the lady checking me out at the exit removed the upcharge from my bill and I was on my way. Anyway, I will definitely use them again as the car was new and price was WAY better. Traveled a month ago and have reviewed my credit card statement for any funny biz, but none at all.
Scammed by the counter clerk, who told me to initial declining insurance and gas options, although she had typed on the contract that I had accepted them. MAKE SURE YOU READ EVERY LETTER BEFORE SIGNING. DO NOT FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE TO RUSH THROUGH THE AGREEMENT PROCESS BECAUSE OTHER PEOPLE ARE WAITING IN LINE BEHIND YOU. QUESTION THE CLERK AND ANY SUSPICIOUS CLAUSES ON THE CONTRACT, EVEN IF IT TAKES TIME. Better yet, do not rent from this company.
I rented a car from the Tampa Airport location, which is not at the airport I might add. As a local resident I needed a car to go down south for a day trip. I rented the car at 12:06 am for 1 day. I returned the car the following day, on time as agreed in my contract. The person at the counter stated that their system was down and once the systems came up the car would be returned and a receipt would be emailed to me. I said before I left, Make sure you document what time I returned the car, I do not want to be charged for returning it late. He responded, I am doing that now & I left. I look at my account today and they charged me double what they should have and whenever I called to find out what the hell was going on, they took my info and said someone would be in touch in up to 72 hours. I asked for the local store number and she gave it to me. I called and spoke to Paige (so she said). I explained what happened & she asked me to hold. Whenever she returned to the line she said I had keep the car for 2 days and that is why I was charged more. I told her the story and she said the manager looked up my reservation and stated I didnt return the car until 9:30 pm, 21 hours AFTER I actually returned the car! She stated their systems were up at that time! I called BS & asked to speak to the manager. I was left on hold for over 20 minutes! I called back several times and did not receive an answer. Finally after several tries they answered at the store level, I again spoke with Paige and was told the manager was not there and to put in a ticket with the 800 #. I told her that I did that already. Paige said she would leave a message for the manager & whenever she returned she would have her call me. I looked at the reviews online and called the number form the replys from the other complaints listed here. Lets just say, they were just as unhelpful, I asked for a supervisor and was out on hold for another 20 damn minutes. I finally hung up b/c, I AM AT WORK and actually had to work at this point in the day.. As I sit & wait for a response Im not feeling very hopeful given everything I have read here so far. I am extremely disappointed in the lack of concern and customer service I have received thus far. I would NOT recommend this rental company to anyone! Buyer beware, this place will screw you over and take their sweet time to deal with it. NEVER AGAIN!
My experience was a good one staff was nice and it was crowded and a lot of people but that was not the facility fault all other places were sold out. They were doing best they can. Payless Rental you Rock
By far one of the worst car rental experiences of my life. Read the reviews before you even consider this company. They will overcharge you and you will have to make multiple inquiries and phone calls to get it back. Car was dirty and not the size that I requested. Pay a little more and go with a more reputable company.
Not actually at the airport. Shuttle was easy. Leaving with a car was easy. Returning the car was very odd, as if they didnt quite know how to properly check the vehicle back in. We all had to queue-up at a cashier counter, whereupon the single employee took our keys, and handed us a receipt. Both parties ahead of me had to haggle over broken down vehicles, and repair bills. After about 15 minures, the agent marked my return mileage (she just put 100 miles, which was not accurate) and vehicle condition without looking at the car. As I turned to leave I noticed several families that might be waiting on the shuttle, they said they had actually been waiting over an hour for their cars to be ready for pick-up. Luckily the shuttle arrived, and I left..... never to return. I was lucky.
Rented from this company on a golf trip in Tampa. Horrible location for an airport rental company. Received a focus which looked decent but ran like a bunch of stones! Freaking radio didnt work either! Dont rent from here, and listen to me and the other 200 people on here.
This is the worst place to rent. Rent elsewhere. Prior to my trip to Tampa I pre-paid for my rental vehicle. One I get there they did not have the vehicle I was intended to get which was only the beginning of the problem. The representative at the desk Joe then proceeded to ask me if I wanted to add the car insurance which I denied because I have my own insurance to cover it. He then understood that I did not want any insurance and circles spots for me to initial which I did. To sum up the story I was billed an additional $137 for insurance coverage that I denied because he was a dishonest representative. I have been calling to get this problem fixed but the company continues to give me the run around. Do Not Waste your money renting a vehicle here. They will probably scam you as well. Zero Stars

They spend a lot of time chatting about nothing and try hard to get everyone to pay extra for insurance. They love the scare tactics of be careful... This is a no fault state
I will never use this company again . The price they estimated online was double once I got there . I can understand this was an estimate but double ? That’s a joke and misleading. Also my reservation gave me a pick up location that no longer existed . I drove around for 30 minutes trying to find it, call them and they tell me “O yea that’s our old location from a year ago” . That’s inexcusable and ridiculous . I will never rent a car from here again .
