Most vibrant/lively/clean and best looking YMCA ever been to in Washington
Love it!Best weight room aroundNo pool or spa though.
With the mask restrictions and limited hours of operation it’s not quite the healthy experience that it once was. Masks have the effect similar to asphyxiation and when trying to work out it’s near impossible to give intense effort without nearly passing out. OSHA oxygen and CO2 sensors made for identifying dangerous confined spaces go off when put between a face and mask during normal breathing; Then add heavy breathing. It’s dangerous. The hours have been cut too short to allow time for daily life and work routines and to be able to come and use the facility adequately- including extremely tight hours on saturdays and closure on sunday. The Y has an opportunity to be a beacon of health and hope for this community and I hope they have the strength and courage to do what is right for members and extend hours, days and loosen unnecessary restrictions during intense working sets and sessions when all other evidence would point to it only being a conformity standard of a deranged political climate.
This is where I workout pretty much everyday.
Beautiful facility very clean.
Still working out! 🐴
Clean. Professional. Different from most Ys cause its about college age students and older. Great pickup basketball there. World champ Emmit Linton Jr teaches boxing to kids and adults. Power lifting equipment. Locker rooms clean. Rock climbing wall.
Clean, spacious, friendly.
This is the Y at the Tacoma U of W. Sparkling clean and full of the Worlds Future Leaders. (You can rest easy knowing these over - achievers will replace the losers currently running the world!) If you want to swim laps, go to the Y a couple of blocks over. Its a really good facility as well. Time to Sweat!!
A surprisingly modern building compared to the rest of the old time feel of the rest of the UWT campus, but very welcomed. All the equipment and machines were nice and organized, welcoming staff that are there if you need any assistance, and just so much to do even if you dont feel like working out. Great environment. Would be here more often if school and work didnt already take up 99% of my life.
First workout since they closed! Feels great to be back in the gym!
This is the nicest YMCA facility in Pierce County - probably because it is the newest. It houses the UW Tacomas student center and there are ping pong tables, air hockey and seating on the second floor for them in addition to an office on the first. The building is very light inside with big...most Pierce county Ys are kind of dark. It has nice locker rooms, the latest equipment and a climbing wall.It does not have a pool.Super friendly staff is better than most Ys in the county. One star down for lack of dance classes and lack of parking.
I loved that University Y Student Center had a lounge for Special Olympics athletes to relax and play games and TVs and courts to play on but there needs to be more seating for Spectators and athletes.
Its a wonderful gym and the staff are amazing. Parking after 7 am is horrendous, and because it is a Y there are sometimes several people just hanging out on the machines. All in all not bad though if you go early.
This gym allows lunking. :( The staff are not very knowledgeable comment there just desk clerks. The equipment is nice.
Probably the best gym I have ever attended. Great staff, modern and well-kept equipment (which they rotate regularly), lots of light and clean change rooms. But get here 15 minutes before your intended workout because there is NO parking garage- merely street parking in a 90-minute zone. It actually works best to run, bike or bus here.
Great place for all your workout needs includes a rock climbing wall
Newer YMCA, with friendly staff and good classes. Nice extra amenities such as pool, ping pong, climbing wall.
Very nice facility. Friendly staff and good equipment.
I visit here regularly. My go-to Y unless I need a pool or other family Y amenities. UW students get priority here, but its nice for the neighborhood too. Everythings well maintained, clean, and nicely suited for the crowd. Lots of unique things here youll appreciate over time. Dont rely on staff to inform you about much, including where things are, though a few instructors here can tell you everything there is to know and answer questions you should have asked. Love this place!
My work always holds our conferences and celebrations here. It is very roomy and clean.
Fine. I dont like that students get take charge or priority of spaces and rooms.
Bright, shiny and new. This is a great gym for lifting, especially in the off hours. During peak hours it can get pretty busy but there is enough to do to stay active.
This is probably the best Y in the Tacoma area. Its spacious, the equipment is up to date and clean, and the number of people there at any given time tends to stay manageable.
Great addition, was just hoping for some racquetball courts and a better parking situation. Other than that this is a great gym
Love that the TRX straps are always set up. I usually stick with those and kettlebells so thats great for me. Only thing I have, and this is a very tiny thing that Im probably weird for, wish the showers could get colder. I like cold showers after a good workout.
Facility is fine.... Staff is another story. I lost my wallet and I left there only 30 minutes prior. I called to see if they found it or someone turned it in. I was in hold then a girl came back to say they didnt find it and then proceeded to tell me to call back in a couple hours to see if someone turned it in. I literally hopped into my car and within 15 minutes, I had my wallet. So instead of looking to see and saying someone turned it in, just tell someone to wait.. not cool
Great facility with lots of room but parking can be hard to find and only 90 minute zones! Something for everyone to utilize.
Fantastic location, clean, open quality air, easy access to cleaning equipment. Friendly greeters. Nice equipment.
The equipment is brand new and the staff is super friendly. What more could you want from a fitness center? They have a rock wall, several classrooms (for things like dance and yoga) and I believe they have basketball courts as well. I go here for the weights and cardio equipment. They have plenty of cables, free weights, and machines for weight training. Lots of cardio equipment as well.
Great facility, great staff. Overall pretty clean. Climbing wall, hangout area, basketball court, mini exercise rooms. No pool. This is our go-to gym.
The first YMCA I ever had, and I love it! Been going here for a year.
Beautiful Y building in downtown Tacoma, I have taken classes there and the staff have been Very nice and accomadating. There are plenty of things to do from basketball to a ladder you can physically climb. There is a big weight room downstairs and members are kind enough to help if you need any. There is also a yoga room and a soundproof praying room which is pretty cool as well. In conclusion I love going to the Y at the Univercity student center because I feel safe and it accomadate my needs as a athlete.
Love working out here. I usually stick with kettlebells and TRX when Im here. Facilities are clean, staff is nice, its great!
Everyone has always been friendly and understanding. I couldnt expect anything better even if I wasnt in this situation.
Great gym, they have everything I need for a good workout. All the staff are so friendly and eager to please...highly recommend
I really do enjoy this place. Great staff, enough space to never feel crowded. I chose this place on purpose and I dont regret it.
I may come back and re-review this in a few weeks when the Tacoma central ymca is reopened. Currently, this location is over crowded. Both with equipment and people. They tried to cram everything on one floor so the basketball courts remain open for games.I love that the crew take the time to make members feel welcome, and take pride in the location. It always feels clean, just kinda cluttered. But I am a do more with what you got kind of guy. I dont need a million machines.
Original Review: Best gym around in my opinion. Staff, gym, equipment, and entertainment. Everything is pristine.
Front desk staff is very friendly and helpful. Facilities can get quite crowded during peak hours (weekday evenings). Sometimes not enough space for individual weight training with free weights. Locker rooms are just ok.
Friendly staff and great equipment!
Everything I need to work out. Except a therapy pool. Great facility. Great staff.
Very beautiful and great local.
Friendly staff and clean gym with a good variety of different machines
Great new facility with very helpful staffEdit Dec 12 2016 - The facility is so popular, it is now impossible to find available equipment after 5pm.
Great space to get in a quick workout between classes.
Welcoming staff and an excellent amount of free weights.
Bodybuilder, Lifting 7+ years, 5-6 times a week. Place and equipment is brand new with a friendly staff. My number 1 complaint is that there is no Smith machine! Its a basic piece of gym equipment but for some reason it is MIA here. There is no real variation of machines..such as no wide grip bench or decline bench, no hammer strength machines for shoulders, etc.Dumbells stop at 120.A LOT of douchey power lifters who weigh under 150 with suits on who yell while sumo lifting 135 pounds. Distracting and on busy days they clutter and hog all the barbells and racks. No pool or sauna which is surprising for a remodeled place.I understand this is a family YMCA and not a Golds gym or something so thats why I ended up giving it a 4. I love coming here and it is a really nice gym to go to but definitely not the best.
State of the art facility.
The University Y is a wonderful Cold Stone Creamery of awesomeness. Wow, one sentence into this review, I say something that makes no sense at all… Amazing. It may not make sense to you, but it makes sense to me. It will make sense to you once you come to this gym. Youll find good company here at the University Y. I’ve been going here since the day it opened which was on January 1st of 2015. It was great to see this place build from the ground up - both the building itself and the community. I was able to witness a unique partnership between UW Tacoma and the YMCA foster to what the University Y is today. Youre probably thinking to yourself right now, who cares about this guys story... I just want to read a quick decent review of the gym. Fine then…...The facility consists of 3 floors each containing the following:-1st Floor: Weight room which houses squat racks, bumper plates and platforms for Olympic weightlifting and powerlifiting, free weights like dumbbells, kettlebells and stuff, benches, cable machines, etc. Theres also a multipurpose studio room for stretching, classes, etc.-2nd Floor: Full NCAA-sized basketball court (which can be divided for separate sports/activities like pickleball, volleyball, fitness classes, etc.), another multipurpose room, a game room, and a cardio bay which has treadmills, elliptical, other cardio stuff... I dont do cardio so I stay away from this area and the equipment. Walking up the stairs between each floor is already enough cardio for me.-3rd Floor: Running track, more cardio equipment, punching bags, areas to cool down and stretch. But wait! Theres more.Every floor has a restroom. The showers and locker room are located on the first floor specifically. This facility does not have a sauna or pool but the Tacoma Center YMCA which is three blocks down the same street… does. It’s nice to have a neighboring facility that can fulfill all of your aquatic needs.Just like most gyms, the busiest time is between 5pm and 8pm when everyone is getting off of work and stuff. However, you can still knockout a good workout at this facility - plenty of space and equipment to accommodate. For me personally, I love coming in the mornings cause of the members that regularly come during that time - their energy helps me get my day started. In conclusion, if youre looking for a well kept gym with good atmosphere, staff, and community, the University Y is the place to go. I hope you found this review informative :)
I love going to this Y..friendly staff, great downtown location, and workout equipment on all three levels.
