Aug 21st I called and explained that my dog needed to be seen. Without hesitation they seen her, and diagnosed her with diabetes. All the other animal hospital in PA were not considering her as a emergency, so they would not see her. This was the ONLY vet hospital that cared! I have not been blessed with a human child of my own yet, so God blessed me with my very own first dog of a 11 years now. Shes my baby! The care they showed towards her was so much appreciated, they answered all my questions without hesitation, they even took the time to show me how to give my dog her insulin shots. It was a wait, but I totally understood that. Also the price was obviously expected with it being a hospital. I appreciate them so much. I recommend them to anyone!
Great place! Took my Beagle at 1am when she had a high fever and could barely stand straight. She was there until 4pm the next day on an IV and being monitored to ensure the antibiotics did not react badly with her. The staff was very thorough and explained everything well, and she is doing much better. Definitely take your pet here in an emergency, or any time!
Excellent care with top notch specialists and state of the art equipment. A bit pricey compared to others in the area but this is a great example of you get what you pay for.
Late night emergency. Tech who checked us in personable and caring. Veterinarian was awesome! Good listener, explained situation well, handled dog with care and remembered my name when talking with me. Great experience at 1 AM!!!
I was going to write a long raving review. But to make it short. They are great. !!!!!
These good folks have been there for us many times over the years. Have never let us down, always there when we need them ♥
After going rounds with our hometown vet claiming there was nothing wrong with my cat, I decided to finally bring my 17 year old cat here to truly find out what was wrong. We arrived and we waited for about 2 hours (no big deal, it wasnt a life threatening situation and we just walked in.) They set us in our own exam room so my kitty wouldnt get overstimulated. We had Dr. Ervine for our vet and she was absolutely amazing. They found out that my baby had suspected Triaditis and told us the best course of action would be to keep him overnight to monitor and medicate him. We picked him up the next day and everyone seemed to really love him and treated him very well. My cat responded very well to the treatment they sent home with us, and they did a free follow up visit. I called in with some concerns and they got him in the next day for bloodwork. We found out he was doing just fine and making wonderful progress. He had one last follow up and they gave me the peace of mind I so very much needed and assured us that they are always there if anything else goes wrong. We are still having some issues with my kitty having diarrhea, but they gave us a prescription to treat it. The only downside is the cost, but you truly get what you pay for and we got exceptional service and care for my sweet boy. They more than likely saved his life and at that point, the cost didnt matter. Thank you guys!
I called Metzlers earlier this week because my beagle was limping and it was getting worse and they informed me that to get her in it would take 6 weeks or I could do an emergency visit at a $140!! Are you kidding me I dont spend that much to go to the doctor myself. I have been going there for a while but, it seems that the prices are being catered more and more to the rich in our area. Normal everyday people cannot afford those kind of prices. It really saddens me that a lot of people cannot afford that care in this area due to the prices I understand why people dont take their animals to the vet. I can afford to go but I dont feel that I should pay a $140 when its not an emergency and youjust cant see them. But they are able to see them in the emergency clinic how does that work you cant make me an appointment but you can fit my pet in if I walk in and pay the $140 charge!!!
PET OWNERS BEWARE!!! I have never written a review before in my life but I felt one was warranted here being how money driven this business is.We have an 11 week old puppy who was experiencing some urinary issues. We went to a local vet who treated her for an infection. Her pain continued even after the antibiotic treatment. We decided we should take her to a specialist and Metzgers was brought up to us. We called and explained the situation to the vet. He was very rude and arrogant. They want to instantly know your budget and just started throwing out dollar figures which even at the time I felt was a bit odd having never seen our puppy. He quoted us $400-$500 to run the tests. We decided we would go deciding it was likely the best for our pup. They took her in ran some diagnostics on her. When the vet called us in the parking lot he essentially said we didn’t find anything. We got the bill and it was $720. Much higher than the original quote. Looking at the bill they ran blood work, an Ammonia test and an ultrasound but they came up clean. They then charged us $110 for a second opinion without any Authorization from us. The second opinion also offered no additional insight just a way to get more money. They then hold your animal hostage until the bill is paid. 2 vets and $720. then they handed us our puppy and said sorry we didn’t find anything. It’s basically like we drove an hour to State College handed them $720 and drove home. What a complete waste of time and money. We questioned the whole process only to be offered another scan for an additional estimate of $2500! Based on their last quote we figured that meant at least $3000. It’s seems they just try to suck every dollar they can from you with no concern for you or the animal. It is Absolutely disgraceful.
Im a truck driver and They took in my dog at 2am and got her all fixed up. When all of the other vets I called just told me that there was nothing that they could do and told me good luck. Well I did have good luck that this place was not to fare from where I was.
The staff are great--caring, courteous, and for the most part vigilant about their job. The issue is getting their bandwidth--(1) phones are lengthy and ineffective for busy professionals (2) their booked so far in advance they have vets emailing late into the night trying to keep up with urgent issues. I have been going here for 3 years for my 2 cats and 2 dogs. At first, I thought they were just busy. Then, every single time I call in they have the same storyline which is thank you for calling, is this an emergency or can I put you on a brief hold?. Upwards of 5 minutes goes by - EVERY time - and then they come back to address the issue. Fine, if youre busy or its sometimes but its EVERY time. One time, I sat on for 10 minutes for an urgent issue to call back and then inform the woman I was on hold for that long. Clearly not in order of incoming calls and no priority when you have a true urgent issue. All that aside -- which could be mitigated I thought by an online portal -- I noticed the upgraded waiting room and a small tag on my bag today stating From: Your VCA Family check out your pets profile at: shopmyvac.com; I thought finally! they are updating to ensure I dont have to wait on the phone any longer. I promptly went back to sign-up only to find out they do not participate for area code 16801/16803/16823. Only these clinics come up with a notice if you dont see the clinic you are looking for they dont participate:VCA Willow Mill Animal HospitalVCA Gettysburg Road Animal HospitalVCA West Shore Animal HospitalVCA Charles E. London Animal HospitalVCA Conewago Animal HospitalVCA Broadway Animal HospitalVCA Old Trail Animal HospitalVCA Chemung Valley Animal HospitalVCA Bridgeport Animal HospitalVCA Sinking Spring Animal HospitalVCA Smoketown Animal HospitalVCA Southern Tier Animal HospitalBack to square one on the phone issue...I have also explored VitusVet participation to no avail. As far as Im concerned, VitusVet is the best mobile pet app and portable EHR out there and it is a real shame this clinic with all their staffing and bandwidth constraints dont invest more in technology than a pretty looking waiting room.
I wasnt going to write this post. But after watching my dog almost die of a very curable illness, Im writing this. This past summer, mid pandemic, I pulled into VCA Metzger, to get my dogs yearly shots. It was my first time here, and I wanted G to become a patient here, based on reviews. WRONG.I got a flat tire in their parking lot, as they were doing construction on the entrance. Construction company yelled at me, without masks, when I asked why there were screws in the road. I shouldve known then.I was surrounded by angry and yelling construction workers, and when they brought my dog out, the young lady mustve forgotten to administer his last oral shot, they were having trouble with. End all, they never gave it to him, and never even told us our dog had a small amount of worms in his stool. AND Metzger owned the construction company.Lets just cut to the chase: Metzger owns the Vets office, All of the Commercial offices at their complex (10+ other businesses) and the construction company. They refused to take responsibility for the flat tire, or their construction company, or take care of my dog.2 weeks later, me and my girlfriend have really bad headaches, and need to get tested for covid. Yeah, you know where this is going. Dont ever go here, or frequent their other businesses. They almost killed my dog, AND my partner.Dont Believe Me? Scroll through the other reviews. check the 1 star reviews, that arent done by employees or friends.
My Shepherd was sick for 3 days, multiple symptoms and i could not find a single vet that could “squeeze her in”, they all just kept telling me her symptoms weren’t sounding promising. Hence the reason i was trying to get her to the vet in the first place. Metzgers got us in, they were good with her and me since I’m a very emotional mom when my baby’s sick. They did bloodwork and figured out rather quickly that she had pancreatitis and sat me down, explained treatment options, allowed me time to discuss it and didn’t make me feel uneasy about my decision. The treatment went smooth, snd she came home the same night, and is recovering so far amazingly. I can’t thank the staff and vet enough for saving my baby’s life.
In town for vacation. They didn’t hesitate to take us in within the hour. Great treatment and service for my dog’s cut paw pad. Fair pricing.
Thank you so much to this Animal Hospital! With just one call, They reassured me that my pretty kitty would be okay when she ate a small amount of raw dough with 2% or less of yeast in it! I can’t thank your works enough for your help and information that was given to me! 😊
My dog is now dead. The price range was $2600-4600 and maybe more. No payment options available. Without a specific estimate, its impossible to get credit, grants or financial aid. The charge way more than neccessary to run a business.
My dog had been yelping in pain and not able to walk. It seemed like the pain was getting worse and the soonest my vet could get me in was in two weeks. I was able to get an appointment at Metzger the next day and they fixed her right up. They were great with my grumpy old girl and she has been all the better for it. Love this place and will continue to go here!
If I could give 0 stars or even negative stars for this poor excuse of a vet hospital, I would. We took one of our dogs there because of difficulty he was experiencing with bowel movements. They essentially started with a conversation about what our budget was! Thanks Dr. Griffiths for caring about your pocketbook... I mean our dog. But wait, it gets worse! This is purely an operation to make money at the expense of pet owners who love their animals. They kept him overnight, charged us over $1500 and essentially said they didnt know what the problem was because they didnt see him straining to move his bowels as we have. They also admitted that he had not had a bowel movement in over 24 hours! Yet we paid two waste management fees as part of the bill. So, I pay you to clean up...nothing?! They did, however, want to sell us expensive food to help him with his problem. WHAT?!?! You dont know what is wrong, youve charged us more than what you said you would charge, but we should buy dog food to help with something that you cant diagnose or understand. These are the most unethical and callous and rude folks we have ever had the displeasure of working with. Kayla, the receptionist, is especially rude and unpleasant. Seems that if you dont want to have surgery - oh yes, thats right Dr Granite recommended a surgery for him unrelated to our concerns and admitted that it was not necessary and would not help with what we are seeing - then they are not interested in helping. Just another attempt to make even more money at our expense and without concern for our dog.We urge you to say away from this place. You will need to take your animal to another vet anyway. Thats what we are now doing.
Wouldn’t help ba eounded dog without money upfront. They are about money not about animalsYou will see many more reviews like this
I called metzkers to see if they could see my toy poodle who has had very loose boughs and is lethargic because my regular veterinarian is full and its full I called and they gave me the run around on the phone and couldnt see him until late in the evening and acted as though they didnt want to see him at all which I think is pretty ridiculous
I cant put into words how grateful I am for Metzgers staff. They are always so kind and caring and empathetic when my pup needs help. Dr. Granite and her techs really helped me out last week and Im so thankful!
I want to thank the staff and Dr. Granite for their care for our sweet Molly Mae. We drove 2 hours to bring our dog in for what we thought would result in emergency surgery. Unfortunately, it was much worse than what our local Vet thought and in the end we had to say goodbye to our sweet girl. However, the staff was caring, compassionate as well as, up front and honest about our dogs situation. Giving us all our options and allowing us time to make a very difficult decision. They also allowed us time with Molly and to be with her until the end, even during Covid restrictions. Hoping that I will never need to seek out their emergency services again but if that day ever comes, I wouldn’t hesitate to come back.
I would never recommend this Animal Hospital. They use scare tactics to justify their reason for you to keep bringing your dog back to them. I was basically told if I didn’t follow his instructions (Dr Mark Koshko) that my dog wouldn’t make it. He just kept adding medications for me to give her without even examining her. I kept telling him that they were making her sick and the answer I received was “you are seeing her every day and it just seems that way”. I was told my pet had a severe case of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, which she did not, the biopsy indicated it was a mild case. He just kept adding medications one on top of the other. They caused her to get pancreatitis and her kidneys to fail. Their response to their failure (Mark Koshko and Fred Metzger) was that I should be happy I got 14 years. I was new to the area and trusted them. I spoke to other Vets regarding her diagnosis and non of them would have done the treatment she was given by Dr Mark Koshko. He never even looked at her past medical history. If you decide to go there be careful and get a second opinion, do not let this happen to your pet what happened to my Lucy. She was the kindest little girl and didn’t deserve this. My heart is broken. Run as fast and far from this place. They are all about production and money.
I would like to thank the entire staff at VCA Metzger animal hospital for the awesome care they provided for my dauschund. From the first call I made to them to when I picked up my baby they were all professional and caring ❤. The entire staff are courteous and professional. I knew they cared about my baby and took care of her. Vetinarian called personally and explained in detail what my girl needed and also came out to my car to explain diagnosis and treatment. The techs are excellent as well and well educated in their positions. Office personnel were quick to schedule appointments and check in and out my girl. The entire staff are wonderful and I cant thank you enough for the care my Grace received!! ❤🐕😇💯
My kitty, Chester, threw a blood clot at the start of a snowstorm, and was seen by his lovsl vet an hour away. We knew we had to get him in somewhere and I was so grateful to have a place where Chester could receive care. The vet was very upfront that Chesters treatment was likely to be expensive and that his prognosis, given his medical history and current condition, was not stellar. The vets kept me updated on Chesters medical progress and his comfort. They were very willing to work with my parameters -- what is kind. I saw other reviews suggesting that they are all about money, but they could have kept my insured cat hospitalized for a week or more before recommending that i let him go, if all they wanted was to get money. They were clear about changes in his prognosis and kept their word that they would let me know if it was time to say goodbye.. That time did come, despite everyones best efforts.I had previously used an in-home euthanasia service for another cat, and it was a truly horrific experience (the vet arrived at my house with an EZ nabber and proceeded to squish my terrified cat sideways inside it, while he growled and screamed. She injected him directly in the heart in a way that dd not actually work, requiring multiple trips to the car for more meds. I had called her asking for a more humane option for my cat who had a lot of anxiety at the vet, and she had told me she could do that. Wow, was that wrong.) after that experience, had no expectation at all that being with my cat as he left this world would be helpful to me or comforting to him (indeed, after that last experience, I had PTSD symptoms, and I still get upset thinking about his last moments of pain and fear.)At Metzgers, Chester was placed directly in my lap, we were given time together, and he remained in my lap throughout the very gentle process. The vet explained what would happen accurately and with compassion. I am so grateful to have experienced a gentle, kind, goodbye with my sweet, sweet kitty. I am sad he is gone, but I am so grateful to have been able to give him a proper respectful goodbye where he could feel loved.
Thank you so much for saving my dog! She accidentally ate some medication that’s she shouldn’t have, showed sign of poison. I tried to reach out to my regular vet, they turned me down after I told them everything, all they told me is try to call around while my puppy was suffering! I’m glad I found you guys.
I would like to thank Dr rider and all ok the staff for taking care of my senior collie.I went to my vet who said my fur buddy would need surgery or possibly a brace for his rear leg and the didnt do this surgery. So we started looking for some to do this and after talking to a good friend who strongly recommended Metzger I made the call. They are very upfront with what is recommended we had done, few days later brought he him had lots of ? and they were very happy to help day or night. My buddy is doing very well and getting stronger every day THANK METZGER ANIMAL HOSPITAL AND ALL STAFF MEMBERS FOR WHAT YOU HAVE DONE
Unfortunately they gave us the bad news and confirmed that our pooch has cancer, after doing a biopsy and other testing all in the same day. But, they were the absolute best experience Ive had with a veterinarian. They have the best service, friendly and curtious staff, and they dont push anything on you. Dr. Ryder was amazing, and answered any questions we had, and was very knowledgeable, and understanding of your pets needs. I would definitely bring another pet here; they are worth the drive, and pretty affordable for the fast service you receive.
My husband and I took our dog Lucy in on a Saturday because she quit eating and her walking was very slow. We called around 11:00 am and they asked if we could be there by 2:00. We said we could and when we arrived they took us in immediately. They did blood work and other tests on her (which in my opinion was fairly expensive but worth it) Dr. John Griffiths let us know that she had advanced stages of lime disease and her kidneys were failing. I appreciated the honesty of the doctor who told us they could keep her there for a couple of days and give her fluids but it would not be a cure and she could possibly feel just as bad if not worse in a few days. The doctor did not give us false hope and told us if it was his dog he would put her down. I didnt hesitate even though it was very hard because Lucy looked awful and you could see she was suffering. We wanted to put her to sleep in the grass instead of in the office because Lucy was a beagle and she loved being outside, They readily accommodated us and thats where she passed. We went into the office to use the restroom before we had to head home and one of the staff (Sharon) gave my husband and I a big hug and told us how sorry she was. She also told us about grief counseling that was available for the loss of pets. She actually had tears in her eyes and I appreciated the caring and compassion she showed us. I would highly recommend this place for emergency vet care and regular vet care if you live close enough. Even though the outcome is not what we hoped for I am so thankful to Dr. John Griffiths and all of their caring staff.
I waited to be seen at another Emergency room for about 4 hours. One after another animal was seen and checked. I get it, my dog wasnt bleeding or throwing up. He fell down the steps and is in a lot of pain. She told me my dog would be next until someone else brought their dog in that was sick. Thats when I got up and decided to leave. We ended up calling Metzger and asking what the wait time was. As soon as we got in the door we were acknowledged. She quickly got his weight and had us fill out paperwork. The doctor was in right away and the best part is he was honest and very knowledgeable. He went right in to looking at my dog and told us the best options. Everyone in this office was absolutely wonderful. Honest, smiley, attentive, and very clean office. I HIGHLY recommend coming here. I wish we didnt live an hour away. I only hope to find a place exactly like this closer to home. Thank you everyone so much!
We have had a great experience with this hospital for a few animals of our own or animals we found in the road and took to them for emergent help. Dr. VanGorder and all the staff were helpful and gave great care. If I would call to check up on the animals we brought to them to get a check-up/report, the vets and staff were all kind and professional.
Dr. Andy treated our most loved family pet with so compassion and care. We came in at 4am and the staff was so friendly and caring. Our furbaby was treated and we couldnt be happier with our visit.
One price was given for service I agreead to 500-600 dollars. I get a bill of $1355. When I said something about it was told it was a miscommunication. Get everything in writing from them. Will being disputing the charger and getting with a lawyer
Brought my beloved feline companion in 2 nights ago on a emergency visit. He was 15yrs old. I was given information to further make my life/death choice. The staff and doctor on duty were very personable and compassionate. After deep reflection I made the choice to let my friend rest with dignity today.Everyone was sympathetic and accommodating. It was an intimate setting. He was treated with respect.Thank you.
Thank you for suggesting us to use the parking lot in the funeral home while your lot is completely empty. I guess it’s empty for a reason.
Last October my husband took our dog during emergency hrs because he was acting very ill. To make a long story short, he was full of cancer. They gave us time to say goodbye and we were there when he took his last breath. We got a sympathy card from both the hospital and another one from the doctor that euthanized him. You get what you pay for and these vets care. So if you pay a bit more it is because of their care and services. I love that they have the emerg hrs so you dont have to wait until the vet opens. There is no transporting the pet from one site to another like some vets do when they use the emergency vet on Martin Street Great vets! The only thing I would add is I wish some of their vets would stay longer. Ive really liked a few and they didnt stay long. The older vets are still there.
It is quite pricy... But between CP Vets and Metzger (when in an Emergency situation), the service I received at Metzger was way better. They provide excellent care and I never felt like a burden when calling them to explain my pups status and develope a treatment care. Doctor Ervine was my pups vet and I was exceptionally pleased with her communication skills and knowledge.
I took my cat to see Dr Griffin for an urgent care matter after talking to him on the phone. The first words after hello both on the phone and in the office were whats your budget? He pushed with questions to get a specific cap amount before even examining her. Be forewarned that If you hear the same...RUN!I love my cat and of course I had her treated, but the bill reached the cap amount and I left with no info as what I could do for her at home. I was told to let him know if she didnt improve and he would get a prescription to me for a stronger antibiotic. Ive called twice after waiting a week and both times I have not received a return call in order to get the prescription offered. My cat hasnt been eating or drinking and I fear I will need to have her put down unless I can find someone else to help. Fortunately, I called my local clinic, Allegheny Spay and Neuter and they retrieved her records from Metzgers and helped me to get the antibiotic. In short, my experience was an expensive lesson with a doctor who has a questionable facade of caring and showed more concern with how much he could bill.I strongly recommend to anyone to be very cautious about choosing Metzgers and and Dr. Griffin .
I just called to make an appointment for an 8 wk litter check and first shots. When asked about how much it would be the receptionist said wait she would check, then litterally slamed down the phone.
Hands down the best place to bring your loved ones! The entire staff is truly caring. They make you feel comfortable to have your animals in their care!
I am very pleased with Metzger Animal Hospital. They truly stand out from the rest in their field. Their facilities, doctors, and techs are amazing. After an appointment they call multiple times to check up on the patient. While they are a bit more costly than others in the area, what you receive in service makes it worth every extra cent. And, if you are a current patient, emergency services dont destroy your savings account.
I found a cat dumped in a bag along rails to trails in critical condition. After trying my best to help him, I decided to take him to Metzger Animal Hospital. Dr. Jennett did everything possible to help this kitty. Elana, a veterinary technician also took wonderful care of him. They were both amazing giving him the best treatment and keeping me very informed. Sadly, he didnt survive. But he was given the best care and peace he deserved.Although this was a stray cat, we as humans are accountable for taking care of all living creatures. We cannot turn a blind eye at neglect. Animals are a privilege. Not a right.Thank you Metzger Animal Hospital for your compassion and care, and also having a highly qualified, respecting, compassionate staff. I will continue to praise you, and also take any animals that need the best care to your clinic.
The staff are all very friendly. The doctors make sure to thoroughly explain what they recommend and what they as are doing, and answer all questions with patience and kindness. Highly recommended for all pet needs.
We were sent to Metzger for a 2nd opinion for our sweet Hank. They were sweet to him, caring, compassionate to us and ultimately, we decided to have him put to sleep based on his diagnosis of prostate cancer. We were given as much time as we needed to grieve there in the office. Everyone was so kind. Who would have ever thought wed be back three days later with Hanks 16 year old brother, Barney who, maybe heart broken from losing Hank, had given up and could no longer use his back legs. They took us right in with utmost compassion and again gave us as much time as we needed. This time, the kids were with us and the staff explained everything to them. One male tech even gathered some of Barneys hair and put it into a pill bottle for us. This place is top notch. If we lived closer, they would be our primary vet. Thank you so much for such wonderful care at one of the worst times of our lives. RIP Hank and Barney
No matter how busy or how many questions I have. Dr. Griffiths ALWAYS finds the time to come talk to me and always returns my calls!! He never makes me feel like I am a bother to him. He is a very caring Doctor And true professional!!
I was impressed with the facility and service everytime I had to take one of my pets here. I appreciated the 24 hour emergency care that they offer. I would recommend Metzger to anyone looking for comprehensive care for their pets.
The vet that treated my animal, was kind, and took the time to explain everything to me, thoroughly.. He encouraged me to call him anytime, if there was anything I needed to discuss, which I did..He was readily available.....The one thing I was not pleased with, was some of the charges for items..Some of their charges are EXORBITANT! Four pills of 160 mg. Cerenia was $60!! Later, I discovered the same dose on the internet, at three locations, for $30..
Amazing staff and available 24/7.They provide general care and physical therapy to my Shorthair Pointer. They were able to skillfully help her recover from back surgery to the point where 4 mile walks are possible again. Without their help she would have had to be put down. They were also able to provide a detailed frank discussion about that alternative.
This is the best vet Ive ever taken any pet to ever. BEST. They are friendly, they are helpful. If youre an established customer you can call and ask them paranoid questions about your pets health and they will answer them nicely.
The team of staff is extremely kind and empathetic. In a very stressful and uncertain situation our nerves were calmed by their personal approach and our dogs health was quickly assessed and made a priority. I would highly reccomend this practice and can not thank them enough!
Reception staffs are nice and friendly. Once my dog was shown to a room, we waited for an hour to see a doctor even I had an appointment. I loved here but they wasted my time too much.
Friendly great place. Saved our dog when no one else could figure out what was wrong. Great doctors
Im sure all the vets there are amazing. But Dr. Griffith is my veterinarian for my dog and he is GREAT! Good guy..laid back..gives it to you straight...never seems to be too overly stressed about anything. He makes you feel calm and my dog feel calm. He lets my already nervous dog (because were at the vet) come to him..instead of him going to my dog. It works, because then my dog feels more relaxed in the room and more curious and then starts to warm up to him. Genius! Although Metzgers is a little pricey they know what they are doing so it is worth the visits. I want to be a vet tech just so I can work there! :)
Wow. Just wow. First our family dog was misdiagnosed as having cancer and was hospitalized and treated over the weekend for such when really he had a bowel obstruction from eating road kill. I disclosed the eaten opossum to the first vet before she admitted him but she insisted this was a cancer case. Even when the ingested bones were obvious on X-ray. I accepted this and prepared my kids for likely the end of our beloved dog’s life while the admitting vet advised us they should keep our dog over the weekend to await “the specialist”’s assessment of how dire his cancer was on Monday.Enter Dr. Koschko. He tells us that our dog in fact had a foreign body bowel obstruction requiring immediate surgery. Hmmm. What had they been doing for the 2 days that he was misdiagnosed? The wrong treatment but I do not complain about having to pay for this misdiagnosed treatment. I am asked to review my financials (yes, I too was asked for a ‘budget’ like referenced in other reviews) and am given an estimate from the vet and consent to the surgery.Surgery happens and goes relatively well. We are advised he will likely be discharged post-op day 2.Meanwhile each day, I am also being contacted by their billing department. In a few short days the estimate has gone up and up and UP. I am asked almost every day of my dog’s 5 day stay to pay additional “deposits” since the price keeps going up. I am itemized for everything under the sun including for “waste management” charges of $8 each time my dog goes to the bathroom while in their care.Today was post-op day 2. I got a call from Dr. Koschko telling me my dog is doing poorly. He’s weak, not tolerating food and not ready for discharge. I am already 3k above the original estimate and know I will have max’d out both of my credit cards to pay my dog’s nearly 7k bill. But I love my dog and we will pay any price to be sure he is healthy. I tell him I’m happy to keep him there until he is ready for discharge but could we discuss a payment plan for future charges? Dr. Koschko’s demeanour changes when he realizes that I am out of cash and his immediate response is “Just come pick up your dog. I don’t advise it, but come get him.” I was willing and happy to pay for care but he wouldn’t even discuss a payment plan with me for the charges required to keep him another day or 2 until he was ready for discharge. Wait? Haven’t I already paid for 2 days of care with a misdiagnosis and mismanagement?I arrive to pick up my dog and the staff require I sign an AGAINST MEDICAL CARE form, away from the other clients, so it is not known in the wait area what shenanigans are unfolding. I don’t want to sign this because I don’t want to take him home until he is medically ready, but I am forced to by staff before they will release my dog and they won’t keep him because I can’t pay up front for the additional charges.Dr. Koschko brings out our my pup. He is so weak he falls to the ground. He can’t stand. I am pregnant and my husband and I struggle to get our very big boy to his feet. He keeps slipping and falling. He is clearly very ill. Without saying anything, Dr. Koschko steps over my boy to sit and talk with other clients. These other animal owners are appalled and implore Dr. Koshko to help us with him. He finally is shamed into helping us get him to our car.Tonight he is vomiting and weak and was discharged with all oral medications. He can’t keep medications down, isn’t tolerating oral foods and is too weak to get up and use the bathroom. My family has tried talking with the clinic several times over the phone and are hung up on by both Dr. Koshko and by a clinic supervisor when they tell them they want to bring my dog back until he is well. This is appalling. This is malpractice. He doesn’t care about your dog. He cares about the amount of money he can get from your wallet, extorting the bond between you and your pet to get more money.Dr. Koshko, you are void of ethics and a disgrace to your profession.
My puppy was having serious GI issues in the middle of the night and Dr. Martinez did a terrific job of diagnosing and treating him and then holding him for observation. They outlined the estimated cost for each scenario and it ended up being very reasonable for an emergency visit.
This is the most amazing animal hospital I have ever dealt with. Based on diagnosis from another vet, I took my 13 year old cat in to Metzger for renal disease treatment. Concerned about her breathing, the vet ordered xrays that instead revealed massive cancer. Every member of the staff was sympathetic, compassionate and did everything they could to make her, and my family, comfortable at such a terrible time. I would recommend anyone take their pets here. They will be in good hands. Thank you, Metzger staff.
Friday night we had an emergency with our 6mth old puppy, Rosie, while on a weekend getaway in Lock Haven. Dr. Sean and team put us at ease almost immediately with a quick diagnosis and treatment plan. We had to leave her overnight but felt she was in good hands. Saturday morning we picked her up and she was good as new! Can’t say enough about the emergency services provided by Metzler Animal Hospital!Forever Grateful,Ken, Becky & Rosie
Had an unusual amount of post-surgery bruising that concerned us. Normal vet was closed because it was 10pm on a Friday. Took our little buddy to Metzger Animal Hospital and was met with very friendly and knowledgeable staff. If need be, Metzger will be used for emergencies and second opinions. Thanks everybody!
I really appreciated their professionalism and compassion when I needed to come in on a Saturday night with my dog having multiple seizures. They explained everything to me in a way that I could understand and we patient and very helpful!
Offered edit to 24 Hours. They offer 24 hour EMERGENCY Services. The regular office hours are M-Th 7:30 am - 7:00 pm., Friday 7:30 am - 5:00 pm, and Saturday 9:00 am - noon
About a month ago our dog Leo was in a very bad condition. He had been sick before but nothing like this. He would not eat and was visibly in pain. Though we live in Altoona, we drove up to state college to Metzger animal hospital and I thank god we did. He had a bowel obstruction that severed his intestine. He had emergency surgery to remove the object and repair his small intestine. After a week stay, having an open abdomen, fluids, meds, etc, Leo was able to come home. There was a time that I honestly didn’t think he was going to. But tonight he is sleeping next to me almost better than he was before and that is all thanks to Dr. Martinez, Dr. Koshko and all of the staff at MAH. They were all so compassionate and committed to us and our dog and we are so grateful that we brought him there when we did.One thing I will also say is if you are a pet owner nowadays, pet insurance is a must! We have pet plan and it is 100% worth every single cent.Forever grateful for the awesome care we received at MAH!
If you want unecessary procedures and no compassion for you or your canine or feline family member then go to Metzgers Outrageous expenses No concern for pets recommended if i didnt get liver biopsy i should consider putting my 15 month old pup down, did not need surgery as returned to top health thanks to family love and true compassion from my vet. NEVER again, they gave up on my dog ill never forgive their ignorance and lack of compassion .Money is there only objective
Great vet. Will be using them for all future vet visits in state college. Incredibly helpful and supportive staff who worked with me and took amazing care of an injured kitten.
Knowledgeable staff and doctors. Convenient hours. Also very fast appointment scheduling even for new clients.
Excellent night shift team. The Dr was very thorough and caring. So glad someone was there when we needed them.
They just want your money. As long as you keep giving it, your pet will need something. Expensive appointments ($60) for the vet to come in, weigh the cat, look at him for five seconds, and then write an expensive script (or 3).. prescriptions dont work? Thats okay! Theyll just give you more scripts or a shot or something that gets more money.
Great Doctors. Worked hard to find out what was wrong with our dog. Always had time to give you an uodate
The are excellent here. The skill of the vets is incredible and every person weve dealt with has a fantastic bedside manner.
We went to Metzger Animal Hospital for the first time under unfortunate circumstances. Our dog was very ill (approximately 24 hours from death if there had been no interventions) and Dr. Koshko quickly identified the issue and gave us our options for treatment. Not only do they have everything they need right there for a quick diagnosis, but Dr. Koshko was also very knowledgeable about our dogs disease and we had a lot of confidence in him. The techs were extremely kind and understanding. They allowed us to visit our dog and take him outside and they allowed me to leave a pillow and an article of clothing with him while he stayed overnight at their facility. They also set us up in a private room while he had a blood transfusion and stayed with us the whole time. My dog was seriously ill and my husband and I were in serious need of help, competence, understanding and kindness, and that is what we got at Metzger. Because of them, this terrible experience went as well as it could have, and our dog is still alive and well today.I recommend them to anyone who cares about their pet. You are in good hands with Metzger!
There is so much to say... I will start off with how absolutly impressed and happy I am with Andy VanGorder as my new families Vet.. He was so professional and very very caring! I took my very sick dog 2 hours away to what my vet said was the best place for the surgery he needed, metzgers hospital. Andy performed the surgery and my dog Tanker was back to health in a matter of weeks, unfortunately we had to go back 2 months later, because Tanker my dog got the same sickness... dr. VanGorder and his team did all they could for tanker.. my husband and i made the best choice to put our baby down... it was the most difficult decision ever! Dr. Vangorder was supportive and professional every step of the way!! I am so so so so happy with him and his team! Thank u all so very much for doing all you could for Tanker..! I would highly recommend this place and will now always take my fur babies there and to him!The establishment was very clean. The staff upfront are very friendly and caring! All in all this place and all that are employed there are absolutly amazing!
Best hospital in pa very kind knowledgeable caring
I wouldn’t even give one star if I didn’t have to! My daughters dog got pregnant by old friends of ours dog. When my dog was in heat I crated her so no pregnancy would happen. For one we didn’t want accidental pregnancy and for two she is too young. It was her first heat. We were room mates with these monsters! When I would leave for drs appts and come back I caught my daughters dog outside with their male dog. I was furious! We moved out but it was too late. She was pregnant. Well she miscarried but never expelled the puppies. She now won’t eat, shaking, fever, laying around, and it’s horrible. I allied this joke of a place and was told they want $500-$600 up front! I don’t have that this close to Christmas. I got $200 in a bank account for vet bills. Never expected anything like this. Beginning of every year at tax time I put $500 in an account for the dogs, for shots, and anything else they may need. Flea meds and shots took most of that fund. I guess you have to be rich to have an animal or your looked down upon. I’m a single mom of two kids and two fur babies. I try my best just to be looked down upon for not having $500/$600 up front. Now I’m sitting here at 2am waiting for their real vet to open so I can take her in to be seen. How do I tell my 3 year old daughter that a doctor (as she sees you) won’t help her dog? These vets need to care more about the animals than they do money! Money hungry vet at metzger animal hospital. They don’t care if your pets live or die. They just want your money. Sick people. I will never call you again! Hope your happy with yourselves. I’m sure you don’t lose sleep over the animals that die or suffer all night till a real vet takes care of them. I hope you burn your Christmas ham and all your Christmas presents get ruined.
Dr. Koshko is phenomenal. Can’t say enough good things. There isn’t enough space to say how well this doctor treated us over our years in PA, how amazing he was to our animals, how absolutely thorough his knowledge is, and how amazing his ability is to diagnose, evaluate, and treat any condition. He treated all of our animals for many years. He is worth driving a long distance to see. He provided chemo for our dog with cancer, surgically removed a lung mass and one lung for another dog and gave us two extra years with him that no other vet could give us, diagnosed and treated our dog who had another rare condition...the list goes on. Money at Metzgers is well spent. Anyone who says it is pricey needs to know that you’ll go somewhere else repeatedly to get the same answer you’ll get in one visit to Metzgers. Hence, the money ends up being the same for far superior service. When we moved, our biggest concern was leaving Dr Koshko! He is that good of a veterinary physician. My extended family now drive almost two hours to take their animals to him. He has saved my mother’s cats and her dog from huge mistakes that other vets made.
Friends watching my pup brought him to Metzgers when they noticed he wasnt eating or drinking. It turned out he had some severe issues. I got home as soon as I good, and they let me visit with him even though it was 12:30 am. They let me stay with him all the next day and, because we didnt know what was going to happen, overnight. Having spent some serious time there, I can tell you that they treat every animal that comes in with love, care, and compassion. I have switched my pup from his other vet to Metzgers. There is no one else I want looking after his health and well being.
Took my kitten to get neutered at Metzgers. Its only been 72 hours since surgery and hes acting fully healed. He had cryptorchid and they knew how to handle it. The surgery seemed to go really well... He isnt in any appreciable or noticeable discomfort. Facilities are very clean. I had an honest billing error and the management (Brita) was friendly and fixed the mistake the next day.
Top Notch Vets, for Top notch care, they are a little more costly than other places but they have the very best in Staff and Equipment making it worthwhile.
I can not thank everyone especially Dr Jennett for the awesome care of my Irish setter Natalie. My normal vet could not figure out all week what was wrong and we went there and got in right away . In 20 minutes he knew what was wrong and Dr Jennett did surgery. My Natalie is finally on the mend. Thank u so much.
Some of the most compassionate people I have ever met. Great place.
We took our 9 year old cat (who had always been in good health) to Metzgers after he woke up limping, walking in circles one morning. We thought we were doing something good for him by choosing there. They did tests, found some elevations and Dr. K basically said it was probably neurological and the cat would need an MRI. He looked at us and said, they cost about $1500 so why dont you take the weekend to think about it (this was a Friday). We checked out with a bill over $350 which floored us and we had to pay immediately. (This was not an emergency service, it was during normal business hours, too). About ten hours later after us trying to feed and water our cat by syringe and his breathing becoming labored, we called the on call number they gave us. We got the on call doc who called us back (young guy, probably Dr. K) who, based on the background noise, was clearly out at a busy bar or restaurant and had an attitude that we were disturbing his night. We told him we thought our cat might need IV fluids or something and he said we could go to CP Vets but it probably wasnt worth it. About an hour later our cats organs started shutting down, he lost all bladder control and his breathing worsened and within minutes he died in my husbands arms. Metzgers was rude, overpriced and not very concerned about our pet, presumably because the vet was more of a dog person. And why give out an on call number only to be spoken to rudely and made to feel like you were a nuisance? This whole event though happened in 2010, is still traumatizing for myself. I was given no feeling that my cat was terminally ill or going to die. The vet was very non chaulant and told us to take the weekend to think about doing the MRI (so we thought it wasnt life threatening obviously) perceivably because he felt we couldnt afford it. There was no concern or empathy on his part for us or our pet. I believe they called us back maybe a week later to check on our cat in which we had to tell him oh, hes dead. Would NOT recommend this practice. They may be advertised as being state of the art, and that may be true, but it is all about $$$. No compassion at all. I truly regret that we chose to take him to Metzgers that day. I feel that if we had taken him to somewhere else like Centre Animal that we would at least have had a better idea of what may have been happening and been able to prepare ourselves a little better if something was terminal. Instead we went about our day thinking he would get over the illness and had a traumatizng experience watching him physically suffer and then die within ten hours of seeing Dr. K.
I had my first ever vet experience as an adult with a pet of my own at Metzgers, and it was absolutely wonderful. My new cat had his first wellness checkup, and everything went incredibly smoothly. The front desk employees were prompt, friendly, and helpful. My vet technician Chelsea was amicable, professional, and knowledgeable. Finally, Dr. Abdulla was fantastic and interacted perfectly with my cat while providing me with useful answers to every question I had. I am completely satisfied with my experience and am very happy I chose Metzgers as my veterinary practice.
I would like to give a special commendation to Andy Vangorder, VMD for the expert care and attention to my dog Sundances dire situation and to my special emotional state. But here is the best part. He heard me. I mentioned to him Sundance has had instances of licking and brought it up to other vets. Nothing. So while he had Sundance on a gurney on his side, he saw Sundances dificulty breath. He quickly assessed it (looking into his mouth and palpating and found a huge lump and tried to aspirate it. No success. He then reported it to the team of veterarianians and quickly moved Sundance prostte on a dog bed for sucessful breathing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Dr. Andy Vangorder. Sarah Drohan
Excellent care. I ended up taking my cat in Monday morning at 6 am after traveling from Williamsport with a plugged boy.. I cant say enough good about Dr. Jennett and Dr. Rider and the staff for the care they gave my boy. Within 3 hours of leaving him surgery was completed and he was in recovery. We had issues getting him to eat a couple days after surgery and the vet techs were very helpful with tips and trying different naseua meds. A week later you wouldnt know hes had surgery. Would definitely recommend and wish we were close to use them on a regular basis.
Very kind and freindly staff very understanding willing to work with your budget
Staff is friendly and explained things to you great with dogs!!
My husband and I have lived in State College for over 7 years. Previously we went to Animal Medical Hospital on N.Atherton. We decided to switch to Metzger because they are much closer to where we now live, and if either one of our dogs ever had an emergency it made sense to take them to a place they had already visited. The front desk is fantastic! Every time I called, the person who answered the phone was very nice and professional. In person, they were extremely busy, but were working efficiently and greeted me. They handled me well when I had first arrived, because I was a little impatient having to wait for a urine collection container-my dog had a bad infection previously, and we were in for a urinalysis. Because we wanted them to have the freshest sample possible, we made our dog wait to pee in the morning so we could collect it right at the clinic, and turn it in. So I went into mama-mode and with my dog crying in the car, ran in to grab a container. I highly suggest they stock these containers at the front-somewhere with easy access. (This IS something that Animal Medical Hospital does).Once we were shown a room to wait in, glad that we had just given the staff our dogs urine sample and that we were told it was going to be looked at right away and the results may even be ready by the time we finished with the vet, we were feeling pretty good about Metzgers. The tech that came in after, Jess, was amazing! She was incredibly personable, knowledgeable, and professional. She greeted our dog first before she greeted us--this is proper care. Once we finished with her, the vet came in: Dr. Martinez.I will be requesting a different vet if we are staying with Metzgers. This vet only wanted to talk-not listen. He came in and did not even look at our dog. He spoke so loudly, and eventually I felt like he was trying to hold back yelling by speaking louder and louder. Every time my husband or I tried to explain why we were there and what was wrong with our dog, he spoke OVER us. I could not believe it! He was so completely unprofessional, and honestly just downright rude. We were the patient/client, paying for a service that he was to provide, and yet he treated us like he was doing us a huge favor. He completely dismissed absolutely everything we were saying. He would ask a question, and while we were answering it you can see that he is just itching to talk--he refused to listen to a word. At the end of it, we decided to take our dog out of there. This was also a new patient exam, and the vet did not even look at our dog, let alone touch him. As I waited in the car with my dog, my husband spent about 20-25 minutes talking to the vet. The vet did come back and apologized for his behavior, and also offered to see our dog for an exam free of cost. Because of our overall treatment, we did not want to receive any kind of service from this vet. We paid for our urinalysis, and left.Im really second guessing leaving Animal Medical Hospital for Metzgers. I would hate to feel so negative about a business based off of one employee.I would give this one star based off of our visit today, but gave 2 because the rest of the staff were pleasant and the location and building itself are great. We obviously wanted to have a better experience than we did today. We were even willing to pay for the new patient exam even though our dog did not need it, he already had it earlier this month. But we were willing to eat that cost so we could make the switch to Metzgers.I hope this vet sees this review. Not only did you not treat us like your client/patient/customer, you truly berated us. I left feeling like I was taken advantage of. The way you talked over me-I spoke to you in a calm and average volume, and kept it professional-and you returned that interaction with close-to-yelling words and utter impatience. I have never been spoken down to in that way, both in a personal or professional setting.
Everyone there is absolutely awesome, they are so good with animals and people and the best care
On a beautiful pre-autumn Sunday, our 13 year old schnauzer mix, Frosty, suddenly began urinating blood. I called Metzger Animal Hospitals answering service. Within 15 minutes, the veterinarian on duty called me back. We discussed Frostys symptoms and decided that she should probably be seen immediately. I drove the thirty-odd miles from Huntingdon to State College with a heavy heart. The staff at Metzger Animal Hospital could not have been any more empathetic. The vet listened attentively to my concerns and took Frosty immediately back for an ultrasound. The ultrasound confirmed our worst suspicions, but, to be thorough, they ran a blood test. The doctor gave me Frostys diagnosis and her prognosis. He completely explained my options and helped me choose the best option for Frosty and our family. Even though the outcome was not what we wanted, the staff at Metzger Animal Hospital was incredibly empathetic and sympathetic to our needs. If I lived closer, I would definitely choose MAH for my pets needs.
Exceptional care! Costly, but you cant put a price on your beloved pet.
