Scheduled an appointment six weeks out. My daughter took the day off from her ASU classes, and her and I went to the office. Had confirmation emails, showed up 10 minutes early, waited almost 20 minutes before the receptionist told us the therapist was not even at the office. We waited 15 more minutes while they tried to get a hold of her. We then left. We never received an email or a reason why Ms. Hinton stood my daughter up for her therapy appointment. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!
Set an appointment, went to the link at the prescribed time-they had cancelled my appointment-no reason, nothing, great first impression. There is also no phone number to call whatsoever...Im not interested in being just a transaction. They are quick to respond to a negative review-but there is absolutely no interaction with your initial reach out.
Eh they are okay. very neutral experience and i don’t care for the way aguilar talked to me and didn’t really listen to me. Probably try for someone else if you deal with this place
Some people have weird reviews on here that make no sense. If you want a great therapist, Smallwood has the best. You need to be able to read and follow directions though, or this isnt the right place for you. I love that I can do everything online.
I really wanted this facility to work out for me, but they’ve got some issues. Please make sure that your insurance will cover their services PRIOR to making an appointment (even if it’s listed on their website). They will not tell you until after you’ve had appointments with them, and then charge you the out-of-pocket charges automatically through their client portal.I had an appointment randomly scheduled for me by my provider when I was at work (the appointment was also scheduled 15 minutes before it was supposed to start, so I didn’t even see the email confirmation until it was too late), and I was unable to attend it. Smallwood Behavioral then attempted to charge me over a month later for “missing” the appointment.I understand they disclose that they don’t have a support phone number to call, and you have to go through their client portal to contact anyone, but I feel like with something as serious as mental health and medications, it’s crucial to have someone to contact ASAP (at least during normal business hours). My prescriptions were written incorrectly multiple times when sent to my pharmacy, so I was never able to try any of the meds I’d been prescribed. I’d also mentioned to my provider that I can’t be spending hundreds of dollars each month on the newer, non FDA approved medications I was being prescribed, even if they work. This resulted in constant back and forth calls I personally had to make with my insurance, my pharmacy, and emailing my provider just to find out the price of a med, only to have to start the cycle again when it was way too expensive. This whole experience was incredibly frustrating and caused me more stress than anything else. I really wish it would’ve worked out better.
Just had a great session and highly recommend if youre looking for someone with experience in LGBTQ issues. My provider was very empathetic and listened well and has a strong background. Ill definitely be coming back to see if this is a fit for me since my last provider doesnt take my new insurance. There were some hiccups in the system (front desk didnt know my provider worked there, my forms were showing completed on my end but my provider wasnt able to view them making it hard to know where to start). Please dont let this deter you from making an appointment with them though! My recommendation is that they hire a marketing and communication professional. As a senior level marketing professional, the overall tone of their communication should always be patient centric and show empathy. I get that this is a new concept to emphasize patient control, efficiency, and keep practice overhead low; However, some communications are too matter of fact and can come off as condescending or brash, which could be off-putting for patients already in a fragile emotional or mental state. I dont know if this is a function of Smallwood Behavioral or SimplePractice but something I would recommend they address if they want to expand their practice.
I have been a client of Smallwood Behavioral for almost 2 years. The providers are great. I was reading through other reviews and it looks like some people can’t read instructions. They have self-scheduling and the portal is very easy to use. Telehealth is great if you have a good connection.
The automation makes for a tough user experience. It’s nearly impossible to get anyone on the phone. I had an instance early on where I missed an appointment inside 24 hrs and paid the $50 cancellation fee but when their system caused a missed appointment on their side they not only didn’t credit me the $50 back (not their obligation but seems fair) they doubled down on their side of the story and insisted it was my misunderstanding. I had a good couple sessions but strong distaste for onboarding and billing. Would recommend mental exercise at a more personable operation.
Dr. Aguilar is great but their system is beyond frustrating to deal with. I have had telehealth appointments where the provider just fails to show. Unfortunately all you will get in response from the practice is a generic we are a 100% self schedule service and outline everything.... nothing about how they are working to fix the problem or acknowledgment of a problem. Very disappointed.
Dr. Aguilar is the BEST. so this review is not a reflection of him at all. the clinic is all self scheduling online, which is nice, but the communication between patients and the clinic is lacking. Ive had difficulty requesting records on numerous occasions, and you can NOT call the office. when you call, you are redirected to a machine that tells you to go to their online portal, which can be frustrating. the clinic doesnt do a great job of communicating what is needed from the patient or when things will be taken care of. if you have serious medications that are extremely time sensitive, Id reconsider.
This office is AMAZING! Everyone here is so helpful! I have yet to have any issues with anything as they are so accommodating. My sessions are fantastic! Their back office took some getting used to, but I can tell they work very hard. I would highly recommend this place for psych and therapy. :)
Dr. Smallwood is great. He is extremely caring and helpful. I had so many issues finding the right medication until he suggested having a dna test which did wonders! After over ten years I finally am on medication that actually helps me.
I have had the same experience as Erica described trying to refill a prescription. I too have filled out refill requests, emailed Margaret, had my pharmacy send requests...CVS tells me they can never get a response from this clinic. I submitted my refill requests over 4 weeks ago, have been without Meds for 3 weeks, and finally gave up. Had to switch to a new doctor completely. Does anyone know if they’re even still in business?
I was scheduled for a Sunday appointment. The outside of the building is locked, so I found the parking garage and took the elevators inside from there. No one was in the building, all of the lights were off, and the company wasn’t even listed in the directory in the building at 7272 Indian School Road which is the address that was emailed to me. At worst, no one was actually there and at best they made it very difficult for me to find them. There isn’t even a number you can call to let them know if you can’t find it or are running late. I’ll be finding a different therapist, horrible experience for somebody who really needed the help but works during the week and had to take a Sunday appointment.
Very kind. Very efficient. Very knowledgable. I especially recommend to any LGBTQ patients. He is so genuine.
I sent in a request to have my medication refilled before I was due for one. Never got sent in... messaged Margaret and she told me that she would send it to the dr... next day nothing. Again I fill out a medication request... and I contact my pharmacy to have them message the dr.... still nothing. So I message them AGAIN and I’m told the request will be sent to Dr Smallwood. I’m now out of my medication have told them this and still my medication has not been sent in. Completely unacceptable
So grateful to find the Smallwood Clinic. Dr. Smallwood made it as easy for me as possible to manage and maintain my health needs. He puts his patients’ needs first, everything is paperless... this is how doctoring should be!
Dr. Smallwood is awesome, hes down to earth and really good at what he does! I would give him 100 stars if I could...I highly recommend him!!
Very competent and kind mental health provider. Highly recommend.
My life has improved immensely since seeing Dr. Smallwood.
The doctor is great. He really cares. The office staff is amazing. I have been going to Dr. since 2010 and I have never had a bad experience. Great place
