The City has shut down indoor fitness and Fitness SF is still trying to bill full price for January membership. The are saying I can exercise outside under a bridge or rent a car to drive to another Bay Area county. This allows them to charge 90$ for a month when Covid is at its highest and the gym on my credit card statement is closed. Very dishonest! Cancelled my membership as did 3 others I know. I know the gyms are hurting but don’t take it out in your customers by pulling a fast one. As of this review they still refuse to credit me for January despite the gym being closed (I don’t want to go to another location in the cold/rain for a full price rate).

Canceled my membership of 2 years after being aggressively confronted by a trainer (tall, older white guy, trains seniors) for setting up a deadlift workout on the padded flooring during a weekday afternoon. His reasoning being that the weight of the barbell would damage the floor.A few things here: (1) I had not even started deadlifting yet, and I was already being screamed at, (2) I have seen countless members and trainers deadlifting on the padded floor.Regardless of this rule and its arbitrary application, I would question what kind of business signs off on trainers approaching their patrons like that. And to Jonathan, the general manager, who followed up with: We dont love having to section off space in our gyms when we have to pour new concrete to repair safety hazards from dropped weights -- thanks for assuming I can lift weights that would cause structural damage to the building, I guess?

Cant say enough about how adaptable SF Fitness has been to the Covid-19 related restrictions placed on local businesses/gyms by the state and City (which I support). They spent the initial lockdown developing an amazing app and reservation process to make it all work once they were allowed to reopen, and then during the most recent lockdown in two locations - including the SOMA location where I go - they brought a ton a equipment OUTSIDE to keep things up and running. The ability to continue working out during these tough times - and safely - has be a live saver. Could not recommend SF Fitness or the folks that run this place more.

Towards the end of 2020 I decided to try working with a personal trainer for the first time and was fortunate enough to get paired with a smart and professional trainer named Victor Herrera. Victor was very patient with me and listened to my goals early on so that we could maximize our time together. Each workout was definitely challenging, but Victors calm demeanor and explanation of the body mechanics involved in each exercise helped me stay focused. Along the way he introduced me to almost every machine and free weight exercise I could take advantage of at the gym. This opened a huge door for me in my personal workouts, and now that I am back in to a solo routine I have a large vocabulary of exercises I can do. Great experience and great trainer. Also, it is clear to me how hard Fitness SF has worked to remain open during the pandemic while keeping everyone using their facilities safe. I go to their SOMA location in SF and it has been a life saver to still use the gym through these challenging times. To all all the kind, thoughtful, and hard working staff I would like to say thank you!

During quarantine its basically the only gym available in the city. The outdoor area is great. I didnt give 5 stars for a couple of reasons: 1- 55 minutes is not enough for me to finish my work out. 2- the app is very unstable. I have to kill the app many times just so I can make a reservation or open the QR code. 3- membership is more expensive than other gyms in the city that either offers the same experience or better. On the positive side, the crew is very friendly, the members are most of the time respectful with other members, they kept adding machines and increasing capacity which I really appreciate. I just dont think Ill keep my membership once quarantine is done because of how expansive it is.

EDITED 1/5/21.GREAT Outdoor setup! This gym was a savoir during 2020!They have really responded spectacularly during the pandemic. Indoors is closed but there is room outside, under a big tent and under the freeway, for 70 people to workout completely socially distanced.100% adherence to masks!!!I worked out yesterday in a rain storm under the tent and didnt get wet!Lots of equipment has been moved outside. The trainers have a separate area too.Great gym. Lots of equipment and plenty of room. Wonderful trainers.Oh, BTW, the parking lot is no longer available for cars. Find parking on the street.

The gym itself is great. They have tons of machines.Unfortunately, the way the gym is run makes it a super unpleasant experience. Its $200 to join, as they make you pay for the first and last month up front. This wouldnt be a big deal if not for the fact that you have to cancel by the 20th day of the previous month to not be charged for the following month. So lets say you cancel December 21st, you will get charged $100 for January, and the $100 you paid for the last month when signing up goes to February, such that you have to continue to pay for 70 days after cancelling (cancel December 21st, pay through March 1st).If you want to bring a friend, its $25 for the day. Thats 1/4 of what it costs for the entire month. Theyre more concerned with profit than the customer experience. The front desk staff is curt/unfriendly. Not the worst thing, but definitely a bummer at times. You have to schedule all your workouts through their app. This wouldnt be a huge deal if not for the fact that the workouts are only 55 minutes long. After 55 minutes, even if youre not done working out, you have to leave.Having to schedule your workout also means you cant work out whenever you want, and if something comes up (family, work, etc) and you cant make that time, you dont get to work out that day.Im sure theyll respond with some rebuttal about Covid, but just for comparison: Anytime Fitness is only $45/month, $10/day to bring a friend, they dont make you schedule appointments, it isnt crowded, and they have locations all over the country in case you like to travel.

Ive been coming to FITNESS SF - SoMa for about 7 months and I can tell you its unlike any other place and experience Ive ever had. I was recently gone for an entire month on vacation and coming back was as if I had never left... minus the fact that Im feeling all kinds of sore. While gone, I did Class Pass and tried Orange Theory, Barrys, and Spin and none of them compare to FITNESS SF - SoMa! The first two focus a lot of time on running and there isnt enough variety in each individual workout. Who likes spending 20-30 minutes on any given day on a treadmill? For that let me just go to my apartment gym.

I’ll be honest - I hadn’t gone to this location pre-quarantine. With Transbay and Embarcadero readily available and seemingly “cleaner”, the SOMA location simply is further down the list. However, I’ve enjoyed working out at this location since the coronavirus restrictions. Not only is there an entire outdoor gym (basically the size of Embarcadero’s ground floor) and free four-hour parking nearby, the staff are friendly yet stern with time limits and sanitizing - that gives me further comfort to continue exercising at SOMA.Granted, the equipment is older, especially the dumbbells which are so old you can smell the rust, so I’m knocking off a star.

This gym would easily receive five stars were it not for two issues:- Too many members hogging the machines while on their cell phones and taking five minutes between sets. Ive been at gyms where cell phones are banned on the workout floor and the rule works. Ive brought up the issue with front desk attendants and they simply shrug their shoulders.- Mold in between the tiles on the workout floor.Otherwise, this gym has a reasonable fee schedule, is well maintained, provides convenient, free parking and excellent, up-to-date equipment. Towel service is free, and its generally clean ( except for the mold). It would be the perfect place to work out were it not for the cell phone issue and the mold.-

Arbitrarily closed all day with no explanation. I pay for access to this gym and they close it with no explanation? This is an unreliable business. If this trend continues, I plan to cancel my membership.Response to the response: It was arbitrary to me since no staff member, including the manager I spoke with could give me any details on why the gym was to be closed all day. I do not want to pay 100/mo so you have a venue for showings films. I did not sign up to attend one of your other gyms 20 minutes away. I pay money for this location and should be pro-rated for days you are closed for a film showing. I am shocked you think this is an acceptable business practice.

Big and pretty serious equipment. Crowded during peak hours (5 min waits for bench press). Really annoyed by the desk workers who announce that the gym will close in 60, 40, 30, 20, 15, 10, 5 minutes. Makes the best/least crowded hour unpleasant to workout. Several of my friends and I have emailed them about this and theyve ignored us.When youre kicking 25 people out at 9 pm on Saturday, its a pretty good sign you should stay open later.

If you are a serious lifter this is the only real lifting gym in SF. They have independent trainers if you need one (they also have house trainers who are useless, like at every other gym). Equipment is kept in perfect shape, and is very strategically placed. Lots of experienced lifters, can always get a spot from someone if needed. Easy to find a workout partner if you want one. Can get a great post-workout shake at the cafe, made from quality ingredients. Parking right across the street.

FITNESS SF - SOMA LOCATION: Great gym, reasonable membership price, free parking, clean facilities, fitness classes included in membership. They also have a pet room to keep your dog while you work out! I do wish the monthly schedule of classes was varied more (I’m consistently not able to take the class I really like due to my 9-5 work schedule*) and a few times I’ve been to the gym late and the sauna/steam room has been turned off in the ladies locker room at like 8pm—when I ask the front desk to turn it on, they say they don’t know how to. All in all though, I would definitely venture to say that FITNESS SF is the best quality for price in the Bay Area.*I want to clarify this with a caveat: they actually offer the class at different times at their other locations in SF, I am just a creature of habit/also lazy and prefer SOMA to some of their other locations.

This is a great gym. Ive always been a patron of 24 hour fitness because of the location options, but this particular FITNESS SF has an open, loft-like feel that gets me every time. Not only are the patrons in shape but you can tell everyone has the same goal in mind and has achieved it with this workout facility. The sales team could use a little work. I have to say my respect and admiration of this place, its owners and staff have never been higher. Prior to bring allowed to reopen I had a meeting with fitness director Maria Stevens to see about personal training ( which was at the time the only gym time available to anyone ). She was awesome, she really went above and beyond trying to find a plan and a price I could afford, I can not say enough good things about her. She probably with out knowing it completely reinspired me again. I wish I wasnt so poor these days it I would have hired a trainer . Flash forward 2 weeks . The outside gym opens, and a few days later the inside . Again the owners and the staff have outdone them selves. The reservation system allows members to make the best of the limited capacity and still be safe and works perfectly ! Once there, you can choose outside or inside, face masks required, they provide bottles of sanitizer and towels to.clean equipment after use and have staff roaming cleajjng the entire time . I have missed this place so much, and Im glad they made it through the nightmare . at this time no locker rooms or showers, but bathrooms are open . Love this place. There 6 days a week, staff is great, very helpful and nice. Free towel service. Most members put thier weights back when done, clean, good equipment, big space.

She returned 15 minutes later to finally use the machine. This is common behavior in this place. Large and very busy traditional-style gym, previously mostly during the evening rush hour, but now even at the 5am opening time. They did a nice job with the bathroom renovations. Finally, they are replacing some of the old creaky and partially rusted equipment. And with Fitness SFs continued succession of monthly fee increases, they really need to bring more of the equipment up to date to show clients what we are getting for our dues. The cable machines are an abomination and need to be replaced forthwith.Still, in view of this gyms previous association (and withdrawal from, following customer protests) the rabidly homophobic Golds Gym franchise, Fitness SFs recent alliance with the Salvation Army (the gym sent out a fundraising appeal for the S.A.) is concerning, given that religious organizations previously well-publicized anti-gay stance. A better -- and local -- choice of charities that many of us can support is Glide Foundation.
