Took the guitar setup and maintenance class a while back just getting to reviewing it now. The class was awesome and Geoff was patient and efficient in his teaching method. My guitars are more cared for and well played than ever. Some of the best money I’ve spend toward gear. I hope to take more classes in the future!
Its been a few years since SF Guitarworks rebuilt the neck on my late 60s Hummingbird, but the guitar has been stable and plays wonderfully, even if Im still dreadfully mediocre as a player.I also had a couple of basic set ups done with them. Excellent results, on time, with a smile. In fact, I was only here to see if they were still working during the Pandemic, as I have some work that needs doing on a couple of guitars.
Great place to fix your guitar
Havent had any guitar repair work done here yet. I came to buy guitar strings, and was glad they carried them. I was also hoping to find more of a store front experience (I also wanted to buy a tuner) but it appears to be *only* a repair shop, truly as the description says. Very friendly folks though!
Fantastic work. Had EMGs installed here in 2010 and later new frets plus radius change to 16. Both times the quality of the work was outstanding. I don’t use any other shop, even though it is a long drive for me. Highly recommend these guy’s.
Not only have I taken multiple guitars here for setups and repairs, Ive also done their new build-a-guitar workshop. After just a handful of hours, I had my own custom built guitar as well as an intimate knowledge of how to build and setup any electric guitar. Geoff & co are incredibly good at what they do and are just great people.Only guitar shop worth going to.
EDIT: I got these guitars back a few weeks ago and have been playing them since. The work was done very well, I’m really happy with how they feel and sound, so I’ve bumped up my review. Still can’t quite give 5 stars just because of how long the work took, but I appreciate that the owner seemed to have seen my first review and he apologized and made extra sure that the work was done well, which I appreciate. Bottom line - I would definitely bring guitars back here if they needed advanced work and I had the flexibility to wait for a while to get the work done right.———-This shop currently has three of my guitars, two of which are taking considerably longer to be repaired than I was told to expect. I’ve called to ask for updates on when I can expect them and have gotten vague answers and the expected date pushed back every time. And when I calmly tried to explain my frustration to the person I spoke with on the phone today he seemed quite annoyed with me, and gave little to no clarity on when I can expect my guitars. If my guitars come back with just an amazing A+ job done on them then I’d be willing to update my review, but right now I’m paying a LOT of money for repairs that are taking a LOT longer than I was told they would.
Bringing all my guitar work here. They did a killer job on my ltd. Not concerned about price just that its done right, and it was. the project I would say was not an easy one. Thanks
Took the setup class today and couldnt be happier. Geoff is super smart, crazy skilled, and a very patient teacher. Wouldnt hesitate to have him repair/tune-up any of my equipment! The PLEK is a beast and Ill definitely be having my guitars that are compatible with it done.
Civil and informed. A good spot to bring that much loved guitar
Many good experiences, one rough one .. which they wanted to make right but I declined.A few years later the good things stand out more. I hope to return here soon.
I had these guys set up my Am Standard Telecaster. Did a great job. Somewhat premium pricing but you get what you pay for. Good quality and my guitar plays like a dream. Well worth the price.
This place is awesome !!! Brennan and Tom are Rock Stars!!! The best place to get a guitar set up. My guitar plays like butter ! Thanks SF Guitar Works !
Ive taken 3 basses in to the shop and they always come out singing! Tom and Geoff are great, I cant say enough about the service. The Plek thing is pretty rad too! Saving up for a re-fret on my T-40!!
Expensive but worth it. Your guitar will play far better than stock out of the box. No repair is beyond them. Ive had my main performing acoustic guitar refretted as well as a few electrics, including hollow body and solid body models. If you can afford the plecking, it gives a noticeably smoother and consistent feel. If you pass on plecking and just get a setup, you are still coming out ahead. Very knowledgeable staff and accepting of all levels of musicianship...they arent condescending that Ive ever seen. They can make a cheap guitar play as well as an expensive one (although parts do matter, more expensive pickups generally sound better-and they can swap them out for you). Setting up a guitar is an art. I can do it, but not like they can. Also, Id rather play than repair. Ive seen them advise against certain repairs that were more than the guitar was worth, but if you want to bring even your cheap childhood instrument back to life they can do that too. Keep playing!
Great work!! On my fender P/J bass!#
Extremely friendly staff, responsive over email. Turned my baritone acoustic into a completely new guitar, drastically improved playability and tone.
Had to have a nasty looking crack along the tuning screws looked at and fixed which they did. Did a great job and less than 48 hrs later I was playing my only guitar. Thanks. Although the cost was not in my budget and hence theres an echo in my fridge...i believe it needed to be done and so it was. So now I have my guitar and I get to diet at the same time as playing!
For a such an overpriced corruption ridden city...I must say this place is an oasis of enlightenment. Great work and very courteous. They really know what they are doing.
The folks here are great at customer service. They want to talk about your instrument (a 15 year old bass in my case), how you play, where youre from. I think this is to both make you at ease and create a player profile of you, which theyll use when working on your gear.My bass receives a lot of love in playing-terms, but not in cleaning-terms. The thing was filthy, the action was too high, the strings mis-aligned. The final straw was a short in the electronics. The Guitarworks folks recognized each of these issues and fixed them all for about $170. A little pricey, which is why their 4.5 rating is right-on: 5 star service, 4 star price. Definitely recommended.
Absolutely stellar people down at sfguitarworks, cannot recommend enough! Got my guitar tuned up and corrected to perfection here, love it!
I broke my guitar in two -at the neck- three years back. I had it repaired by SF guitar works then and I was stunned that I could play it again after such an event. Unfortunately I did the same thing 6 weeks ago. Its back in my arms again -in a new dreadnought Wolfpak case- and it sounds better than it EVER has.
Helpful right off the bat. 1st call and a few minutes talkin already lovem! Rock n roll.
THE place to get you guitar worked on in the bay area. These guys know their stuff. Ive taken all my guitar and bass there.
My favorite, but flawed, LP custom has rested in its case for the last year. The G string if tuned would result in A at the 2nd being very sharp. Unplayable. Three local shops have failed to help, most didnt even see any problem.Although quite expensive, SF Guitar works have corrected all problems. Incredibly it stays in tune, even the notorious G string. The action is now superb, low but no buzz. I had it PLEKed, with additional nut, and bridge work. I recommend this shop for any correctional work, and I recommend PLEK work for any serious player when getting a guitar set up. Now to save up for the other 5 guitars.
Took advantage of a sale at Guitar Center and bought a gorgeous Gibson rosewood acoustic/electric. As I was jamming with a buddy he pointed out it was generating some fret buzz, after that I literally couldnt play without hearing it. So annoying. Took my baby to the folks at SF Guitarworks and got it adjusted. Apparently virtually all new Gibsons need some work, argh. Well good news is Guitarworks high tech fret leveler (called a Plek) did the trick and my guitar sounds clear as can be. Another happy customer!
Ive taken 3 guitars to SF Guitarworks now, and Im delighted with all of them.First I had my USA strat plekd and set-up, and later added Dimarzios. It sounds and plays as good as anything Ive ever tried. Then I had an ESP set-up, again came back fantastic.Lastly I dropped a brand new LP custom in for set up and to add tronical robot tuners. Best $300 I ever spend (+ $300 for the tuners)They can take a while to get it back to you, but I promise its worth it
Great, friendly staff who are super knowledgeable about the instruments and do quality work
I had them give my Les Paul the Plek treatment and is playing better than ever. Highly recommended and will be taking my other guitars in soon.(edit) Ive since taken my acoustic guitar and my lawsuit japan SG and both are an absolute pleasure to play now. 10 stars if I could.(another edit) I bought a bargin 1970 Martin acoustic online. Yeah. I did that.I took the patient to sfguitarworks and once I got it back from Lewis it became the instrument I always wanted. Incredible transformation. Another 5 stars from me.
Expert PLEK setup, fantastic customer service. Many reviews say theyre expensive, but I think theyre worth it, and the best repair shop in town.
The best!
Honest, skilled, righteous.
Phil repairs my tube amps very well.
