I had an idea to make an engagement ring out of a special piece of pottery for my girlfriend. This clay piece was from an ancient civilization dated about 2,000 years ago. After visiting several jewelers, I was feeling very discouraged. They were not willing to work with a piece so soft and fragile and told me it was pretty much impossible. Mark, however, took the challenge and made a beautiful engagement ring. He covered the pottery piece with a clear sapphire to protect it and yet made the red clay shine. The design turned out to be perfect for a unique and special ring.

Mark was absolutely amazing! We had a custom ring made out of my boyfriends wisdom tooth with diamonds set within in. We were very worried about the structure of the tooth breaking, but he was extremely careful. He drilled down into the tooth to anchor the diamonds in the metal so they wouldnt budge. Let’s be honest here, when you are dedicating a piece of jewelry to mark a once in a lifetime moment, you want that piece of jewelry to be just as special and important as the moment itself. That is what Mark does magnificently. The only specs I started out with were a pear shaped, big center stone, white gold and a cushion. Mark took that and ran with it in the design of my engagement ring. He added so many special details I would have never thought to add. Such as having the center stone raised with such meticulous nature that the bottom of my high clarity morganite microscopically barley touches the casing it is mounted in. So difficult to describe so please refer to photos for a better ‘picture’. With my husband’s ring, I asked Mark to incorporate a center piece of wood into the band. He explained why that wasn’t a good idea (over time the wood can expand and ruin the ring) and then designed something I would have never thought of. He used a white gold band and actually hand drew in wood etchings to make the ring resemble a tree, and not just any tree but Koa wood (longer more continuous wood markings). He then added the black sapphires from one of my mom’s old pieces of jewelry and used that as the wood knots in the ring. The finished product is something everyone is stunned by and most importantly, it perfectly represented what we wanted in the ring as a resemblance of our relationship.Mark is not only a master of his trade in designing timeless pieces of jewelry but he’s also so creative, honest, detailed and fun to talk to. He actually gets excited about his new designs and you can see his enthusiasm in his design process every step of the way. He also provides you with several ‘prototype’ images as he begins his design process and keeps you involved and updated at every step of the way. He’s also so accommodating when it comes to payment options and was even able to take our older pieces of fine jewelry (family heirlooms), melt them down, incorporate the precious metal into our rings AND gave us the most honest price for the remaining goods. Mark is our jewelry guy, the one person I hope continues to make all the pieces of jewelry Tristan & I gift to each other one-of-a-kind unique, special and forever memorable.

I have so much appreciation for Mark, its difficult to convey in an online review. I browsed lots of different options for where to go for my girlfriends engagement ring. Many seemed generic, impersonal, and/or unreasonably priced. What stood out to me from Marks reviews and his website were his authenticity, beautiful custom designs, and how he engaged his customers. Working with Mark was an absolute joy. I had received some heirloom opal jewelry from my grandmother, and my fiancé and I wanted to use the stones to make a a set of custom, organic, Art Nouveau inspired rings that would serve as both our wedding and engagement rings. I’m an illustrator by trade, so I can be very picky and my tastes tend run on the...complicated and unconventional side. I cant say enough about how great my experience was working with Mark on my now-fiances custom engagement ring. It was absolutely one of the best overall shopping experiences of my life. I went into the process expecting it to be stressful and nerve-racking, but after an initial one hour meeting with Mark those feelings turned to pure excitement over the amazing ring he designed. I came to him with a vague idea of what I wanted and he was able to draw multiple sketches, make suggestions, and listen to my feedback to create something that was well beyond my expectations (and that my fiance loves). Mark gave me a cost estimate during our first meeting and stuck to it throughout the entire process, even when he later suggested improvements that should have increased the cost. After years of unsuccessfully looking for a very specific pendant I decided to design and have it custom made. After deliberating on the pros and cons of an online vs. local jeweler, I went with Mark. Im extremely happy I did for a whole host of reasons which are too long to list in this review, but here are my top three. First, Mark took the time to understand the symbolism behind the design, my primary purpose for creating it. When I wore the pendant, I wanted to be reminded of a piece of wisdom I never want to forget. Second, Mark was very patient and accommodating. I was very specific about several design elements, some of which did not work once I saw the initial mold. I cant stress the value of interacting with the mold in-person, something that would not have been possible with an online jeweler. In the end we made changes, some of which Mark suggested, that made the second mold, and final product better than I had originally envisioned. Lastly, Mark is a true craftsman, and at the end of the day, that is why you get things custom made. I very highly recommend Mark, and Jewelry by Design.

After the ring was done (and she said yes) she wanted some changes. I was a little worried - I didnt want Mark thinking we did not like his work, but there were some items we wanted moved a bit. You showed us some of rings you were working on. One caught my eye! You looked closely at our stone and my hand and told us that you were certain that you could create a setting I would love. We told you some of the specific things we wanted and you assured us it was possible. We wrote a $500 deposit check and went on our way.We lived in Honolulu and would not be back to San Diego until May of 2015. As you promised, you began sending us pictures of the setting as it was being developed. In April of 2015, you sent an email and said you were looking forward to seeing us in May. On May12, we arrived at your store and you showed us your work. The ring was beautiful. You said you had about eight more hours to finish the work. On May 14 we picked up the ring. Let me say, you are an artist! We love the ring!!It is a classy piece of work. You are definitely a true artist! The brilliance of the diamond is highlighted by the setting you created. Mark was super helpful and professional in helping my fiancé create my wedding band. My fiancé wanted to make my wedding band out of his purity ring and Mark was able to accommodate by cutting the rings band width in half horizontally and resizing it to make it into a women’s wedding band, flawlessly. He was able to keep original elements of the rings design and incorporate them into the new band. We honestly did not think it would be possible to get done what we had wanted but he made it possible and exceeded our expectations immensely. Wow. What an awesome place and an awesome and professional guy. Mark was able to size down a ring for me almost 2 sizes, with diamonds on the side, which is not an easy thing to do. And for a very affordable rate, he even offered to clean the ring whenever we needed, just because he took part in sizing it. He also showed us some of his recent creations for wedding bands (they were beautiful). no pressure sales which I appreciated. You can tell this man loves what he does, and he does a great job. Seriously go here, he will make whatever you want, and it wont destroy the bank.

Several years ago, I needed a jeweler to join two sterling silver cuffs together in order to make one sturdy cuff. I found Mark and he was happy to do this work for me. The sterling silver cuff turned out absolutely perfect, just like it was meant to be this way! Years later, the cuff is still perfect. I never take it off, except to clean it, so it endures all of the abuses from work, play, etc and still holds up beautifully.Recently, I had need of a repair on another piece, as the corpus fell off of my vintage rosary crucifix. Of course, I took it to Mark, who once again cheerfully accepted the challenge, even though it was an unusual request.Mark repaired the crucifix perfectly and I couldn’t be more pleased with his work, talent, skill and integrity.I highly recommend Mark without reservation for all of your jewelry needs.

I was looking get a new wedding ring for my 10th wedding anniversary and had been searching various stores for a while, but couldnt really find a ring that I liked nor really fit my personality. I went with my now fiancee to design her engagement ring. Shes very particular in what she likes and Mark listened to her. When we got the finished product, she was absolutely in love with it. Mark has an eye for detail and he discussed with her ways to make the ring better and it really paid off. We recently went back to Mark to figure out her wedding band. She had so much fun designing the band to perfectly complement her engagement ring. I love my fiancee and the smile on her face showed both Mark and I how much she loved the finished products.

Mark helped me design my wedding band using some of the diamonds from an heirloom piece from my grandmother. I had a very specific but difficult to describe vision for my ring, and the first version he made, while beautiful, wasnt quite as delicate as I had in mind. This was no problem, though- he happily made the modifications free of charge, and I love the result. I highly recommend Mark and will be back the next time I am in the market for custom jewelry.

Mark made a custom engagement ring for me and a mens wedding band for my fiance. On our first visit, Mark took the time to understand what styles I was interested in, and together we looked through many other rings hed created in the past to determine the specific features I wanted included. He took the time to obtain multiple diamonds for us to choose from, and created a wax model of my ring to set them in to help us make our decision. My ring turned out stunning, and I couldnt be happier with it.After my ring was complete, we focused on my fiances band. Again, Mark listened closely to what my fiance wanted and created a unique ring that was exactly what hed pictured. When my fiance discovered the size hed chosen was a little too tight, Mark allowed us to bring it back and sized it up in 30 minutes!Mark is an incredibly skilled craftsman as well as a professional business man. It was an absolute pleasure to go through both processes with him, and we look forward to working with him on the future pieces of jewelry! We highly recommend him to anyone and everyone.

I had purchased a ring that was a dual-band with a repeating pattern on the inside and outside of both bands. I had also ordered it in the designer’s largest available size...which ended up being too small. Darn! I reached out to the designer to have it sized up, only to be told that they couldn’t do it. My heart was broken because I had a ring I absolutely loved but could not wear. What to do??Enter Jewelry by Design. Mark walked me through different options for sizing my ring with its particular challenges, and he ended up doing a CAD model of the ring in the right size and recreating segments of both bands so that the ring could go up to the right size without anyone being able to tell. When I saw the finished product, even I couldn’t tell that the ring had been sized...the pattern was perfect inside and out on both bands! And now I have a ring I adore and wear every single day. WOW!!!!!! My 20th anniversary ring upgrade turned out way beyond my expectations. We brought my wedding ring to Mark with an idea in mind for a redesign. Mark took our ideas, pictures and current ring and transformed it into a jaw dropping masterpiece. I picked up my ring on time and have received compliments all day long. Mark designed my engagement ring and both our wedding bands. We went in with ideas of what we wanted and he gave suggestions and made them even better. He took molds of my fingerprints and carved them onto my husbands ring. He created my dream ring with three separate pieces, a green sapphire and diamond accents. People are always complimenting it (that sounds stuck up, but the credit goes to Mark). Anytime Ive needed it resized or cleaned, he is always happy to help. Our rings appraised for much more than he charged us and we couldnt be more impressed with his craftsmanship. Hes also a really nice guy and easy to work with.

Mark is an absolute lifesaver!!! My fiancé and I have come to him multiple times over the last few years for the design, appraisal, and cleaning of my engagement ring and every time we have received excellent service. This morning I managed to slam my finger (along with my engagement ring) in a door and I banged my ring up pretty good. It just happens to be a week before my wedding and you could say I slightly freaked out. I texted Mark right away and he said I could come over ASAP. I was worried that it wouldn’t be repaired in time but he fixed it within A FEW HOURS and texted me with a completed picture so I knew it was ok!!!
