Pick-up was easy and the front desk was super friendly and helpful. The car was less than spectacular in cleanliness. There were no instructions on how to work the car and electronics. It took me about 15 minutes to figure out the parking break. I had a hard time figuring out the radio and maps. I finally gave up. On return, the gentleman who checked us in was less than courteous. He didnt direct me where to park and then criticized the parking. As I was leaving, he criticized even further. I will not be renting from Payless again.

Do not rent from this place. Pick up was easy, however long. They assigned me and another person the same car. I returned the car, gas tanked filled, clean, without a scratch. The drop off directions were unclear as I had to drop off before they opened. They never refunded my deposit then two weeks later they charged me $400. I tried to call and the extension to billing doesn’t work. I called four times, waited forever to be hung up on. I emailed them and they returned the email with questions about where I parked, where I parked if I had a receipt and about five other questions. I asked for an itemized receipt. The $400 magically reappeared. I still haven’t received my deposit. Then a month later, they charged me $350 and then the next day another $650. They wiped out my account of $1000… while I am on vacation with my children!!!! And won’t answer the phone or return emails. I am literally on vacation with no money to feed my kids! I called my bank to dispute the charges but this happened over the weekend so there wasn’t anything I could do. I requested an itemized receipt via email and have not heard back. I am beyond livid. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY! They are shady AF!

I didnt get the car I reserved. The replacement was a Kia that has a problem with the battery dying. At no time was I informed that I would be charged for roadside services by the rep. After the service was performed I got a 0 owed from the guy that jumped me. Then 4 days later I got a bill for $218. I will never use Payless again.

When we arrived at Newark airport to rent the car, there was ONE agent on duty, even though there were SEVEN stations available. There were eight people ahead of me. There was no place for anyone to sit. The agent was doing his best to keep calm and do his job. The customers, including myself, were annoyed at the situation, and that meant that even the least issue became more of an issue. THE COMPANYS CUSTOMER SERVICE ATTITUDE WAS SORELY LACKING. Note, Im not talking about the agent--just a company that can station one agent at a busy airport.. And when we tried to leave the airport, there was no one at the exit booth, and there was one person already waiting for the booth to be opened. He had already called someone, and about 10 minutes later, someone showed up. The car was nice, though.

Renting the vehicle online was fast and easy. Air train from Newark airport got us to the Payless counter quickly and we were on our way. We got a Hyundai Santa Fe, and it was large and easy to drive. It was a bit gutless tho, and I did not like the auto correct of the wheel. Staff was friendly and efficient. Returning the vehicle was confusing and stressful because it was crowded and there was no sign to say where to go. Had to go inside and stand in line, then they told us where to park the vehicle. Staff was right there to check us in however, and sent the final bill online.

A dismal, poorly maintained Nissan Pathfinder with a noisy ride, a non-functioning turn signal and a jittery steering wheel was given to me at the airport. I couldnt even exchange the car at my local Payless car rental agency due to lack of availability of cars. I had to drive 30 miles back to the airport for another vehicle. Their collection of Standard SUVs is pathetic. The one star is for the decent midsize SUV that I was provided in exchange. If you want an uneventful experience, I feel its better to shell out a little more money and rent from Enterprise or Hertz.

Our 1st car wouldnt turn on and we were the 3rd people to have that happen to them. Then, there was nobody at the kiosk to let us leave with our rental car. Honestly, just pay a bit more for a better vehicle and better service. It would better than having to deal with going through multiple cars to see what works and trying to flag down employees to let us leave.

I was prepared to give 4 stars but ran into some issues. The pick up process was pretty smooth. However, I was told I would need to leave a $200 deposit but when I picked up the car I had to leave $250. Also, only about 12 hours after getting my car, the maintenance required NOW alert came on. Long story short, I had to pay out of pocket for a oil change- which they did reimburse me upon return. While returning the car, I discovered I left my wallet in the car- this is where they became the MOST UNHELPFUL in the entire process. Not even a hour had passed between drop off and me returning to try and retrieve my wallet and I was told the car had been rented out already. The lady at the counter said she called a few people and no one had found it. I would assume once I returned the car, they had to clean it before renting it to the next person. They must have done all of that within 45 mins. Not only did this seem odd, but the lady at the counter seemed bothered that I even return to try and get my wallet. She sucked her teeth and huffed when answering my questions. When I called I was just giving another number to try. I filed a lost and found claim but I have very little hope that I will get my wallet back. I think the lady could have been alittle more helpful when I mentioned I lost my wallet. Why wouldn’t she look up the car info and see if it was actually in the back being cleaned or see if it was in fact rented already she could have reached out the person who now has the car and see if the wallet may have been in the car. I think 3 stars may have been too generous at this point.

I would give zero stars if this were possible. Getting to the rental lot was the easy part, but then we werent given the car that we had requested, and in fact received a car that was not only FILTHY but DISGUSTING in every way. We had to stop just a couple miles from the airport to purchase disinfectant wipes, Lysol spray, and other cleaning products, as well as vacuum out the car just to make our commute bearable. Upon returning the car, we again used the wipes and cleaning products to completely go over the car inside and were hardly in it during the rental period anyway! The gentleman that we returned it to even commented that it was cleaner/nicer than what they do themselves. I told him thats exactly why we had cleaned it both picking it up and returning it, because it was DEPLORABLE and should never have been rented out to begin with - especially given COVID concerns. We are then charged for gas that it took to get from the onsite gas station to the lot (but I figured for $10 I wasnt going to waste my time arguing the point). HOWEVER, we then received a letter in the mail that they want to charge $450 for cleaning the car! Are you even kidding right now? We have pictures and testimony. Please do not be fooled Payless. Just because we are willing to overlook $10 does not mean that we are suckers and will pay for whatever scams you come up with. DO NOT RENT FROM THESE PEOPLE! We went with them because they were the cheapest, but PLEASE do yourself a favor and go with a trusted and reputable company instead of these thieves. They are beyond repugnant - both personally and professionally. The only decent employee I met was the man who complemented the cleanliness of the car and to whom I gave the rest of the cleaning products to, asking that he pass them on and have their people put them to good use. Obviously we werent taking them back on the plane with us! :-p

Im very satisficed! Everything was smooth. 5 minutes waited for picking up. My pick-up time was 7am so just 3 other customers ahead with 1 staff. I even could extend my drop-off time without any trouble through my rental period was in high demand. The car was clean and in good maintain. I rented it for 3 days, driving over 1000 miles but there was no problem. Receipt was exactly what I signed in for (included $3.99 for fuel fee for consuming 0.4 gal from gasoline stand just nearby the shop, but Im Ok with that). Drop-off was very quick. Returned at designed place, there was a guy checking the car right away, got receipt and free to go. I was worried because I made reservation through Expedia a month long before the departure date with free cancellation policy when the rental price was much cheaper and there was no similar car when I tried to search for the new reservation at that day . I was worried that I couldnt get the car. But I got it with the cheap price I booked long time before. There are lots of bad reviews I read, but in my case, it was totally fine! Ill use Payless again!

The cost was the lowest I could find, we had a full size 4 door Altima, minimal wait when picking up the car, which was right outside of your office, and no wait dropping the car off. Everything was virtually perfect!

Woman at counter was rude. The car was DISGUSTING. It was dirty and it smelled so bad I was sick from driving it. Someone had clearly smoked in it and the attempt to clean it made it worse. Also I paid for the EZ pass and the car did not have one. I will be reaching out for a full refund. This was a terrible, terrible experience from every aspect.

Terrible service when I picked up the car at Newark airport. Agent spoke to us like she was doing us a huge favor. Didn’t give us any details on the car she was giving us, and wanted to just get it over with. The car (GMC SUV) had already done about 35K miles but made a really loud sound at speeds higher than 40mph. We had to blast the music in the car to drown out the sound. Agent at return (Richmond airport) was courteous but turned out to be a crook. He was all smiles and handed the receipt saying I would not be charged anything additional. When I got home I realized he charged an additional $3.99 for fuel even though I had filled up to full just before i returned the car at the airport (the gas station is at the airport). The fuel charge was calculated on the basis of a difference between 15.6 - 15.2!!!It is quite unbelievable the lengths this company will go to make an extra buck. Since it’s $4 I will not be fighting this out. But rest assured I will never rent a car from you again and will make sure I spread the word about your terrible service.

I rented a car from Payless LGA location on September 1st, 2018 at 11:30am. I drove off towards Vermont at about 11:45am. Within less than an hour, the car front right tire had a severe blowout and put my life at risk. After the accident, I contacted the roadside emergency number listed on my contract, but all the representative told me was for me to return the car at the closet rental location, which was 50 miles away. A road assistance service by NY State Department of Transportation passed by and helped me changed the spare tire. However, there was low tire pressure warning on the car so I didnt feel safe driving the rental for 50 miles back to the rental location. Therefore I called the roadside assistance at Payless to request a tow truck. The truck driver ended up dropping me off at EWR airport, which is dozens of miles away from LGA airport where I originally got my car. I went to the rental counter at EWR and asked for proper solution and compensation for my accident. The counter manager dropped any charge from renting the car itself, but refused to help me with anything else or any compensation. All I requested was a ride home to Queens, because I was not supposed to be dropped off at EWR. I then called the Payless customer service number and was connected to the call center. I wanted to make sure that I wont be charged for the towing fee because the accident was entirely due to lack of inspection of my rental car, and that I will be reimbursed for my cost to get home. The call receiver said all he could do was to open a service ticket for me and there was nothing else he could do. I asked him to transfer me or to give me a number to management who can help me with my questions but he kept responding me with theres nothing I can do. I called the customer service line again today, and was connected to the same call center. The person who answered my call was extremely rude and refused to explain why I need to wait for my response or why I have received an email notification saying I have a response yet there has been none on his side. He gave me the number of Payless LGA, but it ended up connecting me to the same call center again. My experience with Payless is extremely disappointing and the accident put my life to severe danger. I do not think a integrated business should treat customers in this way. Its been more than 48 hours since the accident and I still have not heard back from anyone.

I came to rent a car here 8pm at night and firstly we waited more than 30 mins for the 1 person on the counter to attend to us . Secondly the man assisting us was very very rude, seemed irritated even with a simple question that I would ask him, not helpful at all and did not even try a bit to be slightly helpful we ended up leaving and went to Avis which is through the same company and and we were assisted by a very nice lady who was patient and friendly and we were able to finally get a rental 9:30pm at night

Apparently no one in or around Newark airport is friendly so the folks at Payless fit right in. A smile or thank you would be nice. The few people I encountered at Payless werent rude, they just did their job and nothing more. Construction at the rental car pickup and return is terrible but thats not the fault of Payless. The signage could definitely have been better. I got the airport tour a couple times before I found the right place. The guy at the rental return in the parking lot had a rental car with all doors open blasting music which wasnt the most professional. On the positive side, Payless had the best price of any of the in airport rental agencies, the car was clean, was ready at the pickup time, and there was no pressure at all to buy any extra coverages. So far no wrong charges on my credit card as others have reported.

Be aware of fraudulent charges:I reserved a car for just a day this past Monday. While I was picking up the car I overheard the person at the counter stating that they were charged for a upgrade that the did not ask for, as well as gas when they returned the car with a full tank. I returned the car during a time when there should be a rep present but they were not there, so the keys were dropped off. I received a bill charging me $41 for gas; the vehicle was returned with a full tank of gas. The company is now asking me to provide a receipt for my gas purchase and or a bank statement showing that I bought the gas in order for them to give me my money back. Always double check your charges from this company, especially if your final bill is less than $100; they try to add extra things to make you pay more in the end!

It was very confusing about where I was actually picking the car up from, the time it took me to get out of the lot from the time I received keys... to further my issue I was unsure of where to return the car since it was picked up from Avis.. I got lost trying to find budget/payless and got stuck in 2 garages behind several other cars. I was charged an over time fee and when I was explaining it to the representative. The customer service representative was EXTREMELY rude, was on his cell phone when Im trying to ask questions about my bill. He told me I have to take it up with customer service because he refused to help. He locked the car door knowing I had items to retrieve then he purposely slid the keys over the counter where they fell on the floor. Utterly disrespectful. I will never so business here again. I am a frontline worker as a nurse working for covid. This was completely out of line.

The clerk was curt, less than helpful regarding insurance option, and straight up dishonest about the way the fuel charges work. I even questioned them on the contract (which was so poorly printed it was barely legible anyway - like it was from the early days of dot matrix or something), to which she replied I may wear bifocals, but I can read. She assured me it worked just as she claimed. Unbelievable, especially given that the information she gave me was, in fact, not correct.Dont be fooled - Payless may APPEAR to be a good deal, but they are going to do their best to screw you. I have rented many cars, from many companies, and this one will never be in the mix for future business.

Just cancelled (06/19/20) car from EWR for drop off at SRQPick up site fraught with mischarges wrong rates extra ins you do not need when credit card covers ins etc..and drop off point not better, charging for gas when full tank, playing with return time to add an additional day...Glad read reviews before car was picked up..Do not need any headaches...Reviews are everything, but this places management could care less, maybe time for new management ..This is an extrodanary level of customer that can not be ignored and is unique in its own way

May I give them (-10) stars? First, it took the lady over 15 minutes to locate the car I booked. Then the paperwork was pretty sketchy. Last, after I returned the car with a full tank, I was charge over $50 for fuel. I called them and was kindly told that I just need to email them the proof of purchase at a gas station, then I will get my refund. After over a month and countless phone calls, I got only email after email asking me for the proof, even though I sent them three times AND the original receipt has a note that the tank was full. I finally got sick of this and called my credit card company and ask them to dispute the charge. Only then I got a message that they will refund me. Apparently they were hoping that I will give up or forget one day and keep the money.

Absolutely worst car rental experience I ever had. There was no agent at the counter, someone helped me from Budget rental, and was able to access Payless. I returned the car to the same location, and Im still getting calls everyday that the car has no been returned. I rented a standard SUV for ($85 for 4 days), and they are trying to charge my credit card for $734. The phone number on their website doesnt work and the 1 800 number agents say there is no way to transfer my call to the actual Newark location. I have to go back there and resolve the issue in person, costing me time and money bc the system shows that I still have the car out. I will NEVER EVER USE Payless again.

Worst customer service. Called multiple times to exchange the broke down car and no one was able to help us. Closed at night so you have to go through Budget. ONE person working for two rental companies with constant flight arrivals. Really???Update: The sign at Payless said pick up car at Budget but you cant just pick up your payless quote, you have to cancel your car and get it through them. Guess what? The price was OVER DOUBLE what I was quoted this is robbery. Plain and simple. Payless was also closed at 10:42 When I dropped it off, was told they close at 11. So I couldnt even talk to them.

ALERT- Although the car was left with a full talk of gas they added a $50.80 fuel service charge with additional taxes and fees that were not disclosed when renting. There was a total $65.53 difference between the original agreement and the amount charged. They do not answer the phone for the number provided at the bottom of the receipt. It took two weeks to get an E-Receipt. Payless rental car is NOT RECOMMENDED. I would not even give a one star mark.

Wow...I am surprised at the level of negative reviews about this company. I may have been one of the lucky ones. Ive been using the service since 2010 but mainly in Miami and Orlando. Perhaps thats the difference here. Ive never had any significant issues with this company and have always gotten through when I call them. I travel to the USA quite a few times between 2010 and now and have always used Payless and have been happy with their service, the quality of their vehicles and the pricing is at a point where I feel I am getting value for money. I guess there may be different levels of service depending on which part of the states you are renting from.

I rented a car for my son (48) and grandson (16) since they were going to NJ. I made the reservations on line and tried to pay - but it would not allow me to do so. This was my gift to them. There planed was delayed over three hours so they arrived late at Newark. I did call and let payless know that they would be arriving approximately 10:00 pm from San Diego. When my son arrived to pick up his vehicle they told him they could not accept a DEBIT CARD. He needed a credit card or he could not rent a car from payless or any other rental agency in the airport. WOW! It is late - and they went to another two places only to find out there were no cars available. They have been traveling all day and now don;t have a car to get to their destination. Finally found a rental that would take a debit card BUT instead of $400 for the car it was almost $900. Shame on you Payless! There was more than sufficient money in that account to cover 5 months of rentals and you almost left my kids stranded. The guy at the desk was of no help. I will never recommend this company nor will i use them SHAME on YOU!

Rented with Payless in Newark. I declined the Etoll service when they offered it. The car was fine and so was the rental agent. However, a week or so after the rental, I was charged $106 on my charge card for tolls. When I called Payless to complain, they told me that I have to call Etoll directly. I explained that I had declined the toll service and had my own EZ Pass, with receipts from my EZ Pass account to prove it. They said there was nothing they could do. I called Etoll and after being on hold more than 20 minutes, I had to hang up. I then tried to email Payless about the situation, they again said there is nothing they could do!Zero customer service! I rented a car from them, declined their toll service, was charged anyway, and there was nothing they would do!I tried EToll again. After holding for 40 minutes, I finally got someone on the phone. He put me on hold again for another 10 minutes while he looked in to the situation. He came back and said there was a faulty transponder in the car I rented and they would credit me for the charges. He emailed me a receipt of the charges and they were charges for tolls that were in a completely different location than where I had been. Not even the tolls I had actually gone through with my EZ Pass. I have not actually gotten the refund yet, He said it would take a few days, but I am assuming they will refund my money.The moral of my story is to PAY ATTENTION! Check your charge card statement regularly to be sure no charges were snuck in!!

Id suggest going elsewhere. People not very caring and dont seem to understand their own rules. Put a large hold on on my card and couldnt explain why it was placed on hold for 2 different amounts. Charged for rental insurance saying it was mandatory by state law even tho both my personal insurance and company insurance had coverage. Was not able to verify that this insurance was mandatory by law either. No one was around when I returned vehicle so had to call back and request a receipt. At that time was given a reference number and told to call back after 48 hours? Total run around. Oh and they tried to jack up my rate after I returned the vehicle. It felt as if no one working in office knew what to do. Took a couple days finally got fixed but wouldnt use this company again.

How can I send a number when I dont have a receipt. They cant seem to find it by my name and when and where it was picked up and returned...Funny, they had no problem charging my credit card.. The rental is pretty bad!!! The gave me a broken tire car and my neighbor told me when she saw the broken tire. I called the road service immediately and it wasted me three hours to back and forth. They realized it was their fault to give me a bad car and refund me $20 on my final bill. I thought it was over. Two months later, they sent me a bill and asked me to pay for the broken tire and towing fee. I called the customer service after seeing the bill and the customer service person said they would waive the fee cuz its not my fault. But later on, I noticed that my credit has been charged by them. I talked with them on phone but they were not willing to solve my problem. They opened an online ticket for me and just kept saying I need to pay the bill even it was their fault. I am really tired of that and dont want to waste my time on it anymore. STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!!

Terrible customer service and car rental experience. Vehicle reserved was not the vehicle provided and “available” forcing me to pay the upgrade fee to a larger car. They finally provided me with a car that had a flat tire and left me stranded causing me to miss a full day of work. Roadside assistance took almost 10 hours to address the issue and provide me with a new car. I had to ride in a tow truck back to the airport to get a new car that wasn’t even ready for pick up. After several hours of being on the phone and the facility I was finally given a different car. There was no sense or urgency and staff was rude and unfriendly. Will absolutely not recommend Payless to anyone.

STAY AWAY. I rented a full sized car was given a mid sized car without any consideration. No problem I had a family emergency so that was the least of my worries. I used the car during my stay no issues I had an early flight out so I returned the car before they opened early Sunday morning. Five days later received phone call stating I had not returned the car when I called the number back the person hung up on me. I called back someone picked up and hung up Ive attempted calling several times to the 866 number same issue. Tried calling the office I rented the car from no answer. Theyve charged me over $800.00 for what was supposed to be a $152.00 rental. I looked up another number to contact them and was told my account would be credited the amount I was overcharged but it would take up to 3 days. While waiting I have an additional charge of $326.00 pending. Ive rented from the location at BWI and havent had any issues but I will NEVER EVER rent from them again.

They are not ethical! I explicitly said I did not want additional coverage because I had already purchased. They had me initial that I acknowledged that I was NOT adding on additional coverage. None the less they charged me and I didnt notice until I returned the car and they will not refund. Customer service is terrible. They dont even acknowledge their customers and slouched behind the desk and played on their phones. Mumbled through answers when I asked questions. Cheap, but you will pay the price later. DO NOT USE!!

I have to go against the trend. Unfortunately, I think most people writing horrendous reviews simply dont understand how renting cars works. Some do, most dont.Despite some pretty poor reviews on many of the review sites (yelp, google, etc), I rented with Payless due to the dramatic price difference offered for one of the vehicles.I arrived at the airport with few expectations. Some background - I returned a few days earlier to the US from a trip to Vietnam where I hurt my back - pretty badly (so much so I had trouble walking and was in a lot of pain). I walked in and was waved over to the budget desk at the far end of the counter. One of the employees - complete with a friendly greeting (unexpected, to be honest) - ran back towards me saying stay there while guiding me to the closest register. He continued with Ill take you here. It was OBVIOUS he saw I was walking in pain. This alone was the start of a heck of a great experience. I later found out (after asking) that his name is Frantzdy.I later noticed he had a name tag on but I missed it the first time. Id never get that from Hertz! Frantzdy was great after that as well. Just a nice guy. He didnt push (which I, like most people, cant stand) but did offer some add-on services (which I expected but also expected a pushy sale). After that was complete, we made our way out to the car. There were some scratches. So, I hobbled back in and once again he ran over so I didnt have to walk as far (thank you!!!!). I explained and he said either tell about the scratches on the way out or he would switch the car. As long as I dont have to pay for someone elses scratches, I didnt care. So, we made our way out and informed the young lady at security.at our return, we encountered Frantzdy again and he was just as friendly though he didnt check us out - that was Naeemah. Naeemah was also super friendly and fast.Finally, I have to give a bit of a shout-out to Tiffany. She actually walked over when we were checking out just to ask how things were, how the rental was, etc. I have to give her additional props as when we were renting, she offered another car to help me with my back issues. It was not a major class switch but the fact that she cared, thought of it on her own, etc, made this a rental to remember. Upon return, she also offered her business card and said I could contact her any time.I grew up in New Jersey and have flown in and out of Newark Airport hundreds of times (likely thousands). I visit often as my family is still there. I would not hesitate - not for a second - to return to Payless upon any visit.This team provided world-class service for a $30 rental, an outstanding value. I could not be more pleased.

Totally friendly and warm service, however I was grossly overcharged for both the rental and the tolls, and now they are IMPOSSIBLE to get ahold of. This location does not answer their dang phone and the 1-800 customer service center (also very nice) cant handle these issues on their own. Dont bother filling out a ticket on the customer service page on the website - generic response that didnt address any of my concerns. Never renting a car again.

***Update below*** Ive rented dozens of cars in the past from various companies and locations. This is the most dishonest place Ive dealt with.After reading the other reviews, I feel like I got off a bit easier than some. That being said I only picked up my car this morning. My total cost ended up being $45 more than it was supposed to be even though I declined all coverages and other options. When I tried to figure out what had changed I was initially told that it was additional taxes and regulatory fees (new taxes in the last few weeks??)I still tried to make sense of this, got no where and just signed the stupid paperwork. After looking at it again I noticed a $30 fee next to declined coverage options. I went back again to the girl at the desk who told me it was related to the EZ pass in the car, that I had declined. Her story changed on the additional charge and started making excuses, so I asked to speak with a manager to understand. Of course none was available, she gave me a 1-800 number to call which got me nowhere. They told me the actual rental desk has to answer that charge.Not worth the time or headache being fed bull. I feel sorry for the poor employees working here as they probably have irate customers customers because or poor and dishonest management. Shame on the airport for allowing such a terribly dishonest company function here. Ive rented from other payless and budget locations before, this one puts a black eye on them all.***Update***Definitely I spoke too soon with my initial review. On returning the car (full tank of gas, 2 miles from the airport) I was astonished to see Id been charged another $70.91 for fuel charges AND then another $19.75 for a toll fee even though I paid cash at the one toll road I used! Absolutely unbelievable, this is in addition to the extra $40 they charged initially, so altogether we are at nearly double the agreed upon price of $147

Terrible experience. Do not rent from these people. Even if the initial quote seems cheaper, it wont be in the end.When I arrived to pick up the car, the representative at the desk couldnt be bothered to lift her head from texting so I had to wait for someone else to arrive. The second representative who came was also rude and did not explain or mention any of these charges. I was rushed through the process. She also told me that my credit card insurance was not valid for the rental and charged me for insurance. I have confirmed with my credit card company that this was an outright lie.There were also several sketchy looking charges added on that I was not told about or given the opportunity to decline. Final total charged to my credit card was almost double the quote.

If I could give 0, I will give that. The worst service ever. We have been waiting for half hour and there is no one to help. The whole counter only had two people, and super long lines waiting. We had to wait for another 30 mins to get our car ready. For such a big location, I dont know why they are short of people and cars. This location have THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER. They never answered the phone and when you go to the location, nobody was also there someone from Budget had to help me and on top of the car is not good, especially if you are a parent/parents MAKE SURE TO CHECK-THE VEHICLE. On 03-04-2018, At 10:30pm was my scheduled pick up time. I got there and there was NO ONE at payless counter then after waited good ten minutes one gentleman came out of the room right behind the Budget counter and asked me to go back in budget line for payless rental too. No biggie, I went there waited for my turn and guess what I was sent back to payless counter again. 1 girl came from budget counter to assist me there, anyhow after going thru all the regular process I was given folded paper and told to go out and there would be 1 person who would walk you thru the car exterior as normal thing in any rental places. For my surprise there was NO ONE there and there was no car key, no child seat (as ordered in my reservation) in the car either, checked consoles, cup holder, side pockets, ignition. I waited and looked around then went back inside and asked if I can get the key and the seat so I can get out of there as it was SUPER COLD that night.I was given another car which is totally fine, I went out by myself again even thou I told her that there is no one outside to assist. I put my bags inside the car and I couldnt find the car keys neither there was child car seat there as I ordered in my reservation.Every time I went back inside I had to take my bags inside with me as it was late at night and it is not recommended to leave your belongings without any supervision.I went back inside and asked about the child seat they took FOREVER to bring one and gave it to me at the reservation counter to take it out and install it with all my bags with me.I have NEVER experienced such service. I got upset and asked if THERE IS ANYONE WHO CAN COME OUT AND ASSIST. What is more surprising no one actually cared and did anything. I ended up doing everything on my own. There were people in budget uniforms 3 men I saw sitting inside the back room, 3 were on counters but no one outside to help. I understand the cold weather but someone should be assisting going out to walk you thru the car or at least if child car seat is in order, so place it in the car for customers knowing at the airport they wont be coming without luggage. No Brainer there. HORRIBLE SERVICE. Wont be recommending it to anyone and wont be coming back either. Avis and Enterprise by far the best.

Stay away from these scammers. I returned my car 1 hour earlier than the deadline. The front desk person was happily chatting with another co-worker and asked me to leave the contract they would close and email me the receipt. And then they had closed it 3 hours later after their personal talks were over. I was over charged and I had to open a ticket because their customer service was utter useless, after a week the ticket is still there and they have not even reviewed it. Do yourself a help and stay away from these idiots. The google review itself says a lot how awful the service is. Im sure the people who work there are so incompetent and has not even passed high school.

Hello (DO NOT RENT A CAR WITHOUT A MAJOR CREDIT CARD WITH AT LEAST ONE GRAND AT THE TIME OF RENTAL)I would like to express the frustration of trying to rent a car through Payless service. I completed the online form for reservation with ease and bought collision insurance through a third party vendor (Cheap tickets). I called Payless prior to the rental to make sure I was clear on the details however I was not told I could use a debit/credit card but it would need to excess of $350 in addition to the cost of the total rental plus a credit check (which I passed). I wish on the website they could have pre-verified this information with a credit card or whatever form of payment. I paid to get there and come back to my place because they could not disclose this information on their website. Other than that customer service on location (Newark, NJ) was good, I felt bad for wasting their time and my due diligence was all for nothing. Thanks Payless for your low information website!

My mother rented a car from here thinking it would be safer because someone crashed into our car. Meanwhile they were repairing our car we had to wait like a month all this time we have a rental car from these people. They never answer the phone to let them know we needed more time and when we went there to exchange our car because our reservation was due the next car they gave us smelled like FEET!!! FEET!! It was so dirty and in bad shape my mom jumped off the car and went inside to tell them to exchange that car. We did get a better car but we dont know if we will be paying extra since it wasnt even our fault their car smelled like feet and we ade trying to reach them to get one more day with the car and no answer. We are infuriated! Worse car rental ever!!!
