Great find. Great service, quick, craftsmanship, honest. Stashed in a place that you have to work to find. Perfectly old New York.
Tony and the staff at Modern Leather Goods are top notch!! I sent a Louis Vuitton to them that needed some TLC and was very happy with the improvements made. I will forever recommend them for their excellent customer service and expertise!! Worth every penny!!
Process was easy! Product was outstanding! My Gucci bag was transformed from a bit tattered to looking like a new bag! Since I was so fond of this soft side shoulder bag, I was delighted to receive it ready for another ten or more years!!!
Ive sent many pieces to Modern for repairs over the past decade. Always excellent repairs, and always excellent customer service. Not only do I use them as my preferred repair shop, but I feel confident referring my customers to them for repairs.
Great service with efficient staff. I came by expecting to leave the luggage for a couple days. He advised me to walk a bit and about 20 min later my wheels were replaced good as new. Will definitely go back for future repairs.
I went here to have one zipper puller on a Samsonite Tote bag repaired. As it is a Samsonite repair place I expected them to know what they were doing. For $35 I also expected it to be done correctly. The repair was done in 15 mins (the only positive) but the pullers wont go into the lock properly. I could see this but the guy who did the repair refused to acknowledge it and said it was fine. Zero customer service or willingness to fix it properly. He was just happy to take the $35. I basically paid $35 for a zipper puller which doesnt lock properly.
I had a broken zipper on my Tory Burch backpack. I brought it here and they were so incredibly helpful. They fixed it in 2 min without charging me and told me to just remember them for future needs. They are so nice and helpful. Definitely recommend coming here for any repairs!!! Thank you!!!
Very good service. They arranged the handle of my samsonite suitcase in less than ten minutes. A job very well done!
Just received my bag and I love it! The zipper was replaced and the the bag polished up. My 10 year old Coach bag looks brand new! Tony called me as soon as he received the bag to provide me the work and price details. Two weeks later I received a rejuvenated bag! I am very pleased with Modern Leather Goods!
This place is a hidden gem! I brought my Samsonite spinner suitcase here because the handle broke. Tony and his team fixed it in less than 10 minutes for free! It’s free because it’s covered by Samsonite’s warranty policy. Modern Leather Goods has been for 60+ years and I can see why. I’m bringing all of my future leather repairs and suitcase repairs here. Gucci certified too. They fix everything!
I received great service and my items were returned in excellent condition.
I am very pleased with Modern Leather Goods. I received excellent customer service from Tony. He explained the process and provided me an estimate. My Gucci handbag looks brand new! I will definitely use MLG for any future leather repairs.
Magic place for leather repair! My leather pants was fixed in seconds and they made the stains on my other light leather shirt completely disappeared! More importantly, the price is really reasonable! Would definitely bring other leather product there for repair in the future!
Job well done, if you have a nice leather item that needs a little love, this is the place that you take it to for quality work.
This review is long overdue but very much necessary. My mother passed unexpectedly in April 2019 - by June 2019, I somehow managed to dig out her retro 80s leather jacket that I vividly remember her wearing for years on end. The jacket had seen better days - leather was worn and beat, dry, with scratches and minor tears. Before the leather repairs, I had the jacket refitted at Alterations by Rahman at the suggestion of Modern Leather Goods - they did not steer me wrong and thanks to these two companies, this jacket will be a lifelong possession.
I sent them my Tory Burch boot to repair the emblem. They went above and beyond to help...even reached out to Tory Burch customer service to get the part. The owner kept me informed about the status of the repair and it was completed and shipped back to me within a week. I was very happy with their work and would recommend them.
What a charming place! Very hospitable! Thank you for assisting me today.
Sent in a Gucci duffle, Called me as soon as they got it to assess what it needed. Price was very fair and shipped back in 2 weeks. Couldnt be happier!! Ty!
My favorite Coach purse was falling apart, and googled leather purse repair and came across Modern Leather Goods. I sent picturesand was assured it could be repaired. My purse was polished, raw edges touched up, and returned in a timely manner. The quality of work was amazing!!
Unprofessional repair and poor customer service. On 1/20/21, I dropped off my MCM backpack because the zipper needed to be replaced (plastic teeth were broken). I asked if the existing hardware (2 chrome sliders & d-rings) can be reinstalled to ensure everything matches; the owner told me yes. I was also told they’ll call me if there’s any issues with matching the existing look of the backpack. A few days later I received notice the backpack was ready for pickup. Yes, the zipper installation looked-factory like, but the sliders were orange and smaller than the original. They actually forced the existing/factory d-rings on to the smaller sliders to the point where they couldn’t even move. In doing so the orange color of the sliders was also chipped off; the sliders looked used. I was so upset that I already paid the balance of this $76.14 repair. I relayed my dislike for the repair and was told to wait while they correct it. You wouldn’t believe what they did next. The factory d-rings were removed and replaced with keychain rings... unbelievable. I obviously didn’t accept this poor example of a modification. Once again I was told they’ll make it right and call me if there’s any issues. On 1/27/21, they called me to say the d-rings need to be replaced. I was texted 2 options to pick from; which I did. On 2/4/21, I received another email saying the backpack was ready. I went there today (2/5/21). The orange sliders were replaced with dull steel looking ones; not chrome. They’re also still smaller than the factory ones. As far as the d-rings, the one I previously pick out wasn’t even installed. Instead they installed 2 different (mismatch) ones. The owner and I argued about the poor workmanship and he offered for me not to pay the remaining balance of the repair; which was $26.16. I reminded him that I already paid the balance when I first came to pick up the backpack. After hearing that, the offer he made went out the door. I asked about my original hardware and he didn’t know what happened to it. Again, unprofessional repair and poor customer service.
I like the service and the price gotta take care of my leather
Modern Leather Goods cleaned a light colored CHANEL bag for me and exceeded all of my expectations. The bag was very stained and once Modern Leather Goods Finished working on it, it looked like a brand new bag! Their customer service and follow up is exceptional. Thank you Tony!!
Mailed my damaged Coach bag to Modern Leather goods one week ago. I received it today. Thank you so much for the flawless repair and the quick service. My bag looks like new.
Wayyyyyyyyyyy to expensive. Visited once but wont be going back.
MLG did a great job shortening the sleeves on a leather jacket I bought. Looks as good as it did the day I bought it. Highly recommend!!!
I sent in a Tory Burch purse that I only had for abt 3 months it has that very soft leather I was bringing in groceries and snagged my purse on something I thought my purse was ruined until I sent my purse to Modern leather they did a WONDERFUL JOB fixing the 2 tears thank you so much Modern leather
Replaced my luggage wheels in less than 30 mins. Also very friendly
Ive now been there 3 times to repair my suitcases. Each time they have been very helpful and pleasant. I have watched them with other, more difficult customers. They were helpful and polite with them as well. They can fix a variety of leather products.
I took a designer leather belt to them to replace a broken buckle. Quality repair, but deducting 2 stars for 2 reasons.1. Timeliness: Was told 1 week for repair and that they would call me when complete. I called after 1 week and they told me they would need another week. I called after 2 weeks and they said they would need a couple more days. I called after a couple more days and they said was ready (they never called to tell me it was ready).2. Attention to detail: When i dropped the belt off, i specifically directed them to make sure the color stitching should match what was on the belt when they attach the new buckle and they confirmed it would. When i picked it up, the stitching color was wrong. They acknowledged and said they could do in 20 minutes which they did on the spot and was a quality repair. My reaction was why did this take 2 and a half weeks if they could do it in 20min? The shop owner said backlog....
Absolutely poor service. Went to have my luggage repaired on a Saturday and I was advised that it would be ready on Wednesday. I had not received my item by the following Saturday and I was advised that the item was only shipped to me the day before. I am migrating the country and as such would not be there when the luggage arrives. I was advised that I could not get a refund because the luggage was repaired and there was a absolutely no care that I would not be able to receive my item. Money and time completely wasted. I advise going to another store.
Had a Briggs and Riley 15 inch laptop case which had sentimental value. Disintegrated the handle wrap which was made of neoprene from many years of daily use. They replaced it with leather wraps and stitched them on very tightly! Great job! And to top it off, was told nicely “you never pay for repairs with Briggs and Riley”.(Note that the Apple Maps location close to Penn Station and the store name that comes up are incorrect as of July 1 2019 so use Google. Issue reported to Apple so it might get fixed.)
Traveling to NYC we broke a wheel on our suitcase.Dragging the wounded case along was no fun.A recommendation from our hotel staff sent us to Modern Leather Goods in midtown.Tony took care of us in about 10 minutes while we waited. He tightened the retractable handle and replaced the wheels.Off we went rolling smoothly along. There was no need to trash a good bag and buy a new one.Modern Leather Goods did the repair.Fast service.Fair price.Excellent result.
I called to inquire about the pricing of a zipper repair for a backpack, and have never been spoken to by an employee the way the man on the phone did to me. He was BEYOND rude. I told him a couple of the teeth on the zipper track had fallen off, and he interrupted me saying I needed a new zipper. I said yes, I am aware I most likely needed a new zipper track and started to ask about the pricing, and he interrupted me again and said to me, I said you need a zipper. I didnt say most likely. His tone and the way he spoke to me completely took me by surprise -- I couldnt believe anyone would speak to a potential customer this way. I told him that I was completely put-off by how rude he was being and his attitude, and that I did not even want to use their services anymore, and instead of apologizing his reply was, well thats your decision. I dont care how many good reviews you receive and if your work is top notch. There is no excuse for being blatantly rude to your customers and I will not support a store that allows its employees to treat customers this way, especially when there are numerous other options in the city to chose from.
Bait and switch operation- go to Leather Spa instead. I called to confirm repair price and made a special trip to take my bag in to be repaired. On the phone I was quoted the repair would be $125-175. When I got to the shop after making a 30 minute trip on the subway and in the rain, I was told it would be $250. If they are going to give a price range on the phone, they should honor it! Employee told me that another employee should not have given me a price quote they couldn’t meet, but did not honor the price range I was indeed given, which would have been the professional and reputable thing to do. Their mistake should not become my liability. I left and took the bag to Leather Spa and they are repairing it for $150. Lesson learned- I saved money by taking it to Leather Spa and won’t waste my time with modern leather again.
Awesome quick experience assessing a damaged Samsonite spinner with a broken extendable handle. In and out in 5 minutes after a replacement was approved under warranty. Great customer service. Highly recommend. Limited interaction on the phone, but very cheerful in person.
Good work, but brutally incompetent at providing timelines for completion. They told me the wrong time my bag would be ready three times.. one time I called.. they told me it was ready, and when I got there they hadnt even started working on it yet. For those of you that have to come into contact with an older guy Paul, good luck he clearly has no conception of either reality, time, or both.
Super helpful, they repaired my bag same day with no appointment. Great service!
I have done repairs here over the years. They do excellent work and are really well organized. As the official (no charge) Briggs and Riley repair service, they have parts on hand and are able to do the repair while you wait.
Great service. These guys are quick and they really know what theyre doing when it comes to luggage. I travel about 3 times a week and abuse my suitcases. These guys undo all the damage so I can keep traveling.
I usually don’t do reviews but in this case I feel it is my public duty to warn others. I took my fine leather jacket with a small back tear to these people, and asked if they can professionally repair it as nearly new. The gentleman at the counter said yes for a rather high cost of about $75. After thinking a minute, figuring it’s midtown and the place had an air of good workmanship, i said go ahead. Waited for a brief 30 minutes. Upon returning my jacket, I was shocked by how poorly the job was done. The repair was very noticeable and I expressed my huge dissatisfaction but the counter guy kept explaining how wonderful the job was done, he even had the nerve to charge me tax. Take nothing to this unprofessional unsympathetic establishment. I should had bought two small patches and decorated the damage on the jacket. Lesson learned!
These guys are great! Brought my Briggs and Riley suitcase, expecting to come back another day to pick it up. Well they replaced the defective wheel in 20 minutes and sent me off. I really wasnt expecting to lug the bag with me the rest of the day but it definitely saves me a second trip into the city. Quick and professional service. Thank you!
I had them replace the zipper on an LV black epi bag. Nice enough guys. Kinda pricey for such shoddy work though. I didn’t notice the holes that were left after there was some kind of accident when they were sewing it back together until I got home.
Horrible service. Maybe the guy was having a bad day because there is no excuse to threat a client that way. I went a Friday and a guy gave me an estimate of $45. I come back on Monday and another one told me $90. No explanation. Take it or leave it kind of thing.
Fair, quick, and easy - found this place off of reviews and in 6-7 minutes they had repaired my leather duffel bag. What more is there to say. Will definitely be my go-to repairs place. I also overheard another customer who brought in his bag for repairs being told that there would be no charge because the repairs were covered under warranty, so I can vouch for those reviews as well.
The place is in Manhattan, off 5th Avenue, easy to find. Paul is very professional, knows his trade without losing good contact with a customer, easy to talk to, can answer any of your questions and fix your luggage, bags, shoes etc. Highly recommended
Best experience I’ve ever had. Quick service for my drop in~ pin on my handbag’s handle fell off and it takes 10min for them to fix. Super!
They were able to fix my bag, but I had to ship it since I dont live in NY and it took over a month to get back including multiple phone calls to track down my bag, which ended up sitting in the store and they didnt even tell me. Not really sure Id recommend especially for anyone sending in luggage for repairs.
Hands down, the best in the city. As a concierge, I’m responsible for delivering superior service. That includes services outside my control and, when that’s necessary, it’s good to have a ‘go to’ place.
My luggage handle got damaged on a recent business trip to nyc. I brought it over to Modern Repair and they were able to fix it in 15 minutes while I waited. The work was quality, the price was reasonable...and I was able to make my train at Penn Station.
Among other repairs, theyre also an authorized Swiss Army luggage repair shop. They can do repairs while you wait, first-come, first-serve.I brought in my luggage (the wheels split open), and they quickly took care of it.On drop-off, Tony (front of house at the time) quick took a look on the inside for the luggage ID code to check the warranty coverage. It wasnt too busy when I went in around noon on a weekday (I think the luggage repair person is only there on weekdays last time I called), and I was quoted 10 min. He was nice enough to allow me keep my luggage there while I went to grab lunch, and I picked up my luggage before they closed at the end of the day (they charge you if they hold your luggage overnight).Pick up was easy, no-hassle. I didnt have to do any paperwork or deal with any credit card info. He just took my name/address/phone number on the computer to pass along to Swiss army for the warranty coverage.
I just took my Tumi bag in for a seam repair on the strap... i was asked to have a seat and wait... repair was done in under 15 mins... got me in and out quickly and i cant even see the repair... great customer service, super efficient... would definitely recommend...
While the work they did was quite good, they were late in getting it to me. This repair cost $130 and was part of a birthday present, revitalizing a leather duffle that hadn’t been used in many months. When I asked if it would be done by that birthday, the man behind the counter replied “Oh yeah, no problem!” Even their website, Twitter page, and hold message for their phone number guarantee repairs in a week or less. So I trusted it would be done. However, it took 12 days and so the birthday came and went. When I called to ask about their guarantee, I was told flat out that it doesn’t mean anything. They strive for that timeline but don’t stand behind it if a job takes longer. They didn’t even offer a meager 5-10% discount just for the trouble and inconvenience.I will not be using them again, not so much because it was late but mostly because they don’t stand behind their own guarantee. I don’t like being misled and taken for granted as a customer.
Came here to get my suitcases repaired. Very helpful staff and excellent work.
After reading some negative reviews, I was a bit leary of this place. I had NOTHING to worry about! They were professional, friendly, and did a great job while I waited. I had three suitcases, two that needed zippers repaired, and one that needed the telescoping handle fixed. It took about an hour and a half, but I walked out with everything working perfectly. I highly recommend Modern Leather Goods!
They were able to save a nice work bag of mine after a rip, looks like new! If there is the rare occasion that you need a small job done while you wait, call in and you may be pleasantly surprised! Great and friendly customer service.
Awesome place and great to find. Will be back with other luggage needs. It is not a leather shop as much as a general repair place for shoes, leather and luggage which is what I was looking for.
Quick and reasonable price. Would have given 5 stars but they didnt replace all the parts and left out one, stating they dont have it. I would still go back to them.
Paul is the best! Extremely friendly, patient, kind and repaired everything perfectly. Highly recommend!
As a frequent traveler my luggage is often in need of repair — wheels, zippers, telescoping handle, etc. On each occasion the repairs were carried out expertly and quickly while I waited. Thankfully Modern Leather is authorized repair for Samsonite (and many others) and the repair services are under warranty.
Great customer service! They fixed my bag right there while I waited and now it looks brand new. Very happy with the repair work I will definitely be back to Modern Leather Goods
Very good service they also do tailoring and repair shoes
Friendly place that repairs while you wait, but I also noticed the bait and switch that other reviews below speak of. I was told that replacing the zipper on my luggage and fixing the little handles would be $40. I shouldve requested a written quote, because rather than replacing the zipper, they only fixed the existing stitching and said the former would be $175. I was also charged $45 instead of $40; I didnt argue over the $5, but lesson learned to request a written quote no matter how friendly the business owner might be.He said they guarantee all repairs for 6 months, so well see what happens.
Tony Pecorrela, the owner, is the dishonest person. His false statement was used in the credit card dispute and cost me a lot of stress and money. I came to the store to get the idea if the handbag was made from crocodile skin. After examining the bag he told me that it is not the crocodile skin and his expert supported his opinion, it was pressed calf leather. Tony was so sure about it so he gave me a statement letter which I needed in order to return the bag. Later he changed his mind because the consignment store owner called him (I bought the bag from that store). As the result, I was not able to return the bag.
They solved us a problem with our Samsonite trolley a few years ago with a very professional and courteous service. A bit hard to find as its inside the building as far as I remember but once you get there you see they are really professionals... So I now come back to this review in 2020 the reason being it came to my mind out of the blue. We still remember that experience, we were on holiday one week in New York back in fall 2015 and we messed up with the trolley and could not unlock the TSA lock. It turned out we were so dumb we did not understand how to work out the lock and forgot the combination. We feared to have break the luggage. As soon as we handed over, they let us wait and despite we had an European warranty, they just unlock it at no cost and saved the day and the week. They were very courteous and polite and professional. Thanks!
Some of the previous reviews concerned me - who likes poor customer service. My experience this morning was courteous, efficient and solved the problem in 10 minutes, at no cost. Ive used this place before. Theyre very good.
Friendly and Efficient. Fixed my five year old suitcase on warranty I didnt know I had. Highly recommended!
Do not ever go here. Worst customer service I have ever experienced. I went to get a lock fixed for a suitcase that was 6 months old and under warranty. They charged me $25, did not explain what the issue was with the lock and why I had to pay even though it was under warranty, and to top it off the man was unbelievably rude. Avoid this place if you dont like interacting with rude people!
I brought in my Hartmann roller bag with a broken handle last week and was told it is not fixable. Per Modern Leather Goods it was too old and parts not available. I called The Fixery, sent them a picture of the bag and they said no problem, I shipped them the bag and it was repaired for $65. In the future I will avoid Modern Leather Goods.
I walked in with my T Tech strollers handle broken. It was done in 5 minutes! Free of charge! I am so impressed!Went to the tumi store at wall Street just before and they sent me away saying that they cannot help.Thank you guys for the great service. Thrilled!
Awesome work! Had Tumi luggage zipper repaired in about 3 minutes! $30. Tumi would have shipped off and cost much more $$. Best place for repairs!
Very professional and efficient, they handle a lot of customers so I advise to come early.
Very friendly service, but overpriced and dissatisfied with result. Came to get my belt pierced and staff cut the leather instead, which is now too short. Thanks guys, way to ruin a $300 belt.
Stopped by there hours before a trip. My luggage wheels were cracked and falling apart. I walked in and walked out about 10 minutes later with new wheels. Super fast and friendly service! Why cant all businesses be like this?!
Came in looking for four new wheels on a Travelpro because one was stuck. They fixed it in five minutes while I waited, and saved me from unnecessarily buying new wheels.
This man is no joke make that Louie bag look fresh again
I had a damaged zip on my samsonite luggage. Brilliant service, repaired under samsonite warranty while I waited.
It is efficient. Wonderful service. They replace my wheel-broken luggage within 10 mins without any charge. How come!
Friendly, old-school customer service & pro repairs. And everything seems to get fixed while you wait. Its been there since 1944 and you can tell - in a good way. Everyone walked out happy.
Called to ask a simple question and had a very rude man answer the phone and speak to me as if I was not even worthy of asking a question. Can’t imagine what service must be like in person.
Definitely recommend Modern Leather Goods. Not only are they professional and nice, but they also fixed my suitcase in less than 10 minutes! Great shop.
I found this place on the official repairs section of the luggage manufacturer. You walk in, tell the guy the problem and depending how bad it is, he tells you to wait or how long it will take.A few important notes:-if they dont have the replacement parts, expect to wait a week-they seem a bit disorganized, so I would get everything in writing if you have to come back-ask if the repair is covered by warranty up-front-bases on the few ppl I saw while i was there, repairs ranged from $125-$200. Bring cash go save a few bucks.
As with some of the other reviews, these guys are an “authorized” repair shop for a handful of bag brands. For me, it was my Samsonite messenger/laptop bag whose zipper stitching came undone.I was directed to Modern Leather Goods for the repair and was very pleased with the work. Very minimal paperwork and “while you wait” service for my repair. I was in and out in a snap, and time felt even faster with the free Wi-Fi, water, magazines, and other thoughtful amenities in their waiting room. Service was friendly and professional. I can’t comment on pricing as this was a free, under warrantee repair...
Amazing!!!!! I was so upset when I damaged my leather jacket. But when I brought it in he told me that it would be about 90% back to normal when he was done with it. After I came back I totally forgot where he scuff was because they did such an amazing job!! Check it out on my photos!
I got my Samsonite suitcase handle fixed within 10 minutes and it was covered under warranty. They were able to hold it until close so I was about to run errands without lugging it around.
One of the few luggage repair places left in NYC. My go to place to get my camera cases repaired.
Great shop. Fixed my luggage very fast and of great quality!
Brought a Samsonite carryon to replace a stuck spinner wheel, he “evaluated” the damage and decided to charge me $30 for the replacement, I called customer service about the warranty and they said that whatever the shop decides is golden. Not sure how the previous review wasn’t charged.
Highly recommend to go elsewhere! I was quoted $45 dollars and refused - I went somewhere else and they laughed and did the job in 2 seconds for free.
Has a Samsonite bag repaired on the spot. Great service, reasonable price.
Friendly service and they try to fix it immediately. Reasonable pricing.
Great work and great prices. Highly recommended
Was seamless and excellent work.
I had two suitcases repaired there, and they were pretty fast once I got to the front of the line. Sadly the repairs were sub-par.I was able to get the bigger suitcase home no problem, but as soon as I loaded it up, the handle (which I had needed repaired) popped right off, held together by two screws that were not properly attached. Then, when I brought it in after calling them on it, they yelled at me for not having a receipt that showed the work done.In the end it got fixed, and Ive resolved never to go there again.
Fast, efficient and an excellent repair. Great service!
Very jolly man.. Autograph collectore... Nice gentlemen..
Professional, caring—great place for service 👍🏽
Fixed samsonite handle in 5 minute. And I didn’t had to pay a dime.
Quick, polite and hassle free service. Thats more than you can ask for
