Simply put, John put us on the fish! My dad and I did a full-day float with John and we were very pleased with the experience. The morning bite was slow—totally beyond control—but John covered a ton of water and took us to a number of spots and, sure enough, after lunch the bite picked up. I think we ended up catching about a dozen nice trout, including my biggest rainbow ever... about 20 or so. Johns knowledge of the water and commitment to finding fish is everything you could ask for from a guide. I highly recommend Lone Star Fly Fishing!

If you want to catch fish go with these guys. We had ZERO experience beyond maybe watching A River Runs Through It. But after a quick lesson and terminology session, John had us off catching fish all day. He knew the exact spots the fish were, was quick to decide on lures and knew everything in and out. The weather was perfect, the Guadalupe was beautiful, the fish were plenty, what more could you ask for. Highly recommend booking a trip right away!

We had an amazing time with Kelli and Jackson! They are both patient, knowledgeable, and excellent at what they do. They know the water they work on and are great at teaching anglers of all experience levels. They worked hard and fast and would rig a brand new set-up in a blink of an eye and have you getting bites! My employer and friend, John and I spent two wonderful days with John floating the Guadalupe in Mid-March. We both had some experience fly fishing, but never in a river, and never with the type of drift rig that John had prepared for us to use. But after a short introduction we were ready to float and fish. The bite was a bit slow at times, but we moved from hole to ledge and both found very nice fish to hook. None were smaller than about 17 and we both landed trout over 21 (Johns was over 22). The raft, and Johns handling of it were great, even when a strong wind picked up in the later afternoon. Even the lunch, sitting by the raft, watching ducks and osprey was out of the ordinary; with sandwiches that would put most sandwich shops to shame. I was sorry to see our 2 days end, but will certainly try to get back again, perhaps to try fly fishing for stripers!Rich Adams

My husband found these guys through a google search. He was impressed by all the 5 Star Reviews, but a bit skeptical about their authenticity...fast forward, we booked a 1/2 day with Kelli last minute, as we were driving to the area the next day. I’m an avid some-what seasoned fly-fisher, however, have learned when traveling to new waters it’s always a good idea to find a local guide. We were there toward the end of November, just 1 week before the annual stocking of the waters started...therefore, we were fishing for hold-overs, as the locals call them. My trip was over a month ago as this writing, and I’m still smiling!.With Kelli’s keen knowledge of the water, I landed 5 or 6, (honestly, I lost count )...monster rainbows; and made a friend in the process! A year ago I decided to venture into fly fishing and emailed for availability with lessons and some fishing. John asked a few questions and made a recommendation for a half day wading trip. Kelli was our guide and put us on the fish within 20 minutes of being in the water. She spent the first 20 minutes giving us a run down of the basics we needed and I swear by minute 22 she had my son land his first trout on the fly. From that moment on we were reeling them in.At the conclusion of the trip I asked Kelli some basic info, pointers etc. she answered them, but noting that I had not written anything down she followed it all up with a text message recapping my essentials.I booked with them again at the start of the season and without fail Kelli put us right on the holdovers and set us up with a wealth of information that has helped us throughout this season.I’m looking forward to booking another trip with lone star, perhaps this time getting on the lake for those strippers with John.I would highly recommend new and old anglers alike book with Lone star. They have a wonderful reputation on the river, and off! I even stopped into the Orvis store and they recommended Lone star! You won’t regret the trip!

He is a decent guide for farm raised fish, but if you’d want a good experience go with another outfitter or request his partner take you on a wade trip. Booked 4 days of fishing with them for myself, my father, and 2 of his buddies. He was so bad that we cancelled the rest of the trip after 1.5 days with john.Between the 4 of us we have over 100years worth of going on guided fishing and hunting trips and all 4 of us agree that we have never met a guide anywhere NEAR as awful as john.He was rude, completely impatient, made petty and many passive aggressive comments and this started from the time we got on the boat the first day.I cant stress enough how terrible he was as a guide and as a person. He wasnt just this way with us. Kelli was a great guide. She will definitely put you on some fish. Also gives excellent advice on how to hook into and land fish. We were on a three person wade trip and she easily tended to all of us beginner fly fishermen. Made sure we always had flies on the line and able to fish. Would totally recommend.

I booked a full day float trip with John for my friend and me. Because of where John launches his boat, you will get to fish a section of the Guadalupe that most other guides don’t have access to. I caught my personal best rainbow on that section of the river before we even got down to the section of the river other guides fish. The weather was a little overcast and chilly but that didn’t matter, John had us on the fish. I ended up catching 10 that day including my first Guadalupe brown trout and my friend caught 5. John is easy to work with, very knowledgeable and a fun guy to fish with. I highly recommend his services and can not wait to get back out on the water with him for a wade trip.

One of my favorite trips to do. Very quick, easy to get to, and some great fish! I’ve been 3 times and have enjoyed it everytime! A great place to do some year round fishing for Trout, Bass, Striped bass, and many other species. You won’t regret going on this trip!

John is a skilled fly fisherman and provides an experience like no other. You go out fly fishing on his raft and he navigates the river to get you on the trout. He puts in all of the work and you just have to sit back and take in the experience. I have been fishing with him every year for the past few years and I have had a blast every time I have gone. Great day fishing with John. There are many great things about going out with John, but one of the most unique things is being able to target multiple species on the river. We caught some very nice trout, but had some opportunities to catch huge Striper, Large Mouth, Small Mouth, and Carp. While time of year plays a factor amongst other things in being able to catch all these species-there aren’t too many places where this is even part of the conversation. John knows a lot about the river and will put you on fish. Highly recommend.

I can’t recommend John at Lonestar Fly Fishing enough. Being from out of state & freshly transplanted in TX, I didn’t have a clue about where to fish around Austin. John made the entire process extremely stress free and put me on some great bass. I rarely get to fly fish these days but John was patient with me and provided some great tips on how to improve my cast & set the hook. I will be booking another trip this fall to get after some trout!!

John was an amazing guide and is extremely knowledgeable about the Guadalupe River. We went out in 30mph winds after heavy rainfall the night before making the river slightly milked out and he still put us on some awesome fish. Booked a walk & wade trip a month in advance with LSFF. The day I booked ended up being 44 degrees and rainy; that didn’t stop Kelli from putting me on the trout! I had multiple eats and 2 in the net in the first hour! Mad props to Kelli for braving the weather, putting me on fish and doing all the work, while I had all the fun. Great experience, would recommend to anyone who enjoys the challenge of flyfishing. 10/10

Had a great pre-season float with my girlfriend down the guad with John who was a great guide and mentor to us as we got our feet wet in rainbow trout fishing. Came away with three great fish and even a better experience with fall rolling in and a smooth trip down the river that is a must if you are new to it all or love fly fishing and find yourself in this part of Texas.
