I’ve used The Grizzly Hackle 3 times. Twice floating the Blackfoot and once down the Bitterroot. In each case they had very capable guides and good equipment. The guides were very capable and got us a fish every time. It’s important to know water and fishing conditions. There is only so much a guide can do to get you on fish. Additionally being a proficient fly caster is critical. Don’t blame the guide if you can’t get the fly where the fish are…. The Grizzly Hackle will provide a great experience. I encourage you to try them out.

Definitely the place to go if you were looking to fly fish in Montana! My family came here during our national Park trip in June. Two kids, age 9 and 11, plus myself were first timers. My husband fly fishes and really wanted to do this while we were out here. Turned into one of the highlights of our trip! Chris and Dave were awesome guides- Super friendly, packed great lunches and took great care of us, easy to chat with all day, great teachers and super patient with the beginners! And my husband said every time they told him where to put his fly he caught a fish :-). Super skilled guys who were able to handle navigating the water in some really challenging conditions. I even caught a trophy bull trout! Great experience and highly recommend this outfitter! Scheduling was super easy, Rick, Chris and Dave were great to work with and super professional. Plus you know they’ve got amazing knowledge and skills on top of it. Also, the dry fly apartment upstairs is very nice and highly recommend, great location right downtown with convenient parking behind, great restaurants and ice cream shop right next-door. Highly recommend this outfitter!

One of the greatest experiences our family has had! Booked a trip for my husband and I and our 14 year old son who was just getting into the sport. Jeff Heiskell was our guide and he was excellent! Very professional, super fun and easy going. He brought us the most delicious lunch from The Good Food Store. Jeff took time to teach us, and was very patient. Very skilled with his oars and navigating the water. He put us right where the fish were many times. Even gave our son a few flies at the end of the day to keep. We will definitely do this again and request Jeff!

Sweet fly shop right by the river and downtown Missoula. Large fly selection for everything from pike to trout and had a helpful staff.

We had an excellent day with Andy on the water. The booking experience was excellent. Andy was professional and very attentive in his approach. Our day on the water was mixed with several types of fly fishing which we enjoyed immensely. Catching as many large trout, as we did, was a bonus. My only concern was there was no contact with the guide prior to the morning of our trip at the shop. Andy made up for it in a short discussion and he did adjust to our desires of location.

Absolutely a must visit if you plan to fly fishing Montana! My family scheduled this trip as part of our national park tour Trip in June. Our two kids and myself had never fly fish before, but my husband desperately wanted to do this while we were out here. Chris and Dave were wonderful teachers for us first timers. Chris was super patient with my daughter and I am we had an amazing first experience. I husband and son (Who has done a bunch of other fishing) said they really helped them improve their technique and get great results. They had a lovely lunch for us on the river and Took great care of us. Rick was awesome to work with and setting everything up! Super friendly and super helpful with tailoring the trip to meet our needs. Highly recommend this outfitter for all skill levels (The guyS staying next to us in the apartments upstairs come back every year and talked about their great experiences as well). And definitely stay at the dry fly apartments upstairs- super convenient and great apartment! Can’t say enough good things about these guys :-). This was one of the highlights of our trip!

Just got back from my annual Mecca to Missoula (21 years and counting) Ive been using the Grizzly Hackle and Drew Miller every year.....and every year they NEVER disappoint. From the scheduling to the guiding everything is 5 stars. There are other outfitters and fly shops options in Missoula, but the Grizzly Hackle and the all guides are without comparison. You will not regret selecting them for one second !!!!

The best customer service I have ever experienced at a fly shop. Knowledgeable staff that really go out of their way to make sure you are happy with your purchase. Also, their prices are good and they frequently offer discounts on higher end products that other shops never put on sale.

I would enthusiastically recommend Grizzly Hackle for all fishing needs. We are from D.C. & this was our first time to Montana & our first time fly fishing.My husband, two kids and I just got off the upper Clark Fork after a day of fishing with Kelly H. & Dave H. two of the BEST Grizzly Hackle guides. This was our second day fishing this week; Kelly took us on the Blackfoot River on our first day and we had to come back for more. The guides made the day as convenient, relaxing & FUN as possible. They picked us up from our home, drove us out the river, & were stocked with cold beverages & a delicious lunch.The fishing was great and we appreciated Daves expertise dry fly fishing~ he put us on fish consistently through out the day! Kelly took the time to pull over & take professional photos of us as a family with our beautiful trout. She even hung out for an hour at the end while our kids swam in the river & cliff jumped off the rocks.Cant say enough about our guides or the rest of the staff at the shop. We walked out with hats & t-shirts for the entire family. All staff was very accommodating, laid back and helpful. Thank you Grizzly Hackle for making our family vacation to Montana so memorable!

From the first time that I met Brendan and Ashley back in late May 18, to the drift boat expedition we did with one of their expert guides (Chris McAdam) last week, I have only praise for these guys. Staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. They dont try to sell you the most expensive equipment, but products that fit your needs. They also have a great fly selection. Highly recommend!

Our trip was fantastic! From the initial booking, the Grizzly Hackle shop and guide staff took care of every need. We floated two days with Tom and a day with David, both were gracious hosts and knowledgeable guides, we had a great time and certainly caught our share of fish!

The Grizzly Hackle has been my go-to fly shop for almost 20 years. They have the best local guides in town. If you want to fish outside of the country, the guys at the Hackle have first hand knowledge of all the best fishing lodges in the world. Every trip that they have booked for me has been an amazing experience. When I need gear and am not in Missoula I simply call the guys and tell them what I need. A couple of days later, a box arrives in the mail. Its like Ama$on for fly fishing except that the reviewers actually know what they are talking about. They know what gear works and what does not. Also, anyone reading other reviews should question those that bash the Grizzly Hackle and then drop the name of another shop in town. Wonder who wrote those?

I have been a customer for the Hackle for well over eight years. It is a premium fly shop - carrying Simms, Patagonia, Winston and Scott rods to name a few brands.The location of the shop is awesome - when starting and ending a guide trip you are in downtown Missoula and can have a short walk to multiple restaurants and bars.While I am an avid fly fisherman, my wife isn’t and every float trip she has had a blast. While she can’t cast or fish - the Hackle guides puts her on the fish. The staff and guides go out of their way to ensure you have a memorable experience fishing, but also an outstanding experience in Montana.Great fly shop and wonderful experience! I always like doing business with the shop.

My favorite fly shop just got better. Clearly what sets The Griz apart from the rest of the school of fly shops is the warm Cheers-like atmosphere. Not only does everybody know your name but you gain comfort in knowing that you are going to get the best advice and best guides around. I went there a couple times last summer and a couple times the summer before. Im not from Montana and a novice fly-fisher man but all of the flies they recommended killed it and the location specific advice they gave me was spot on. Hoping to make it out again this summer and load up there.

Kudus to Grizzly Hackle and their guide manager, Rick Marcum! Had a fantastic 1/2 day float trip on the middle-lower Blackfoot River with a guide Rick lined up for my friend and me. We had to be at the Missoula airport at 1:30 and hated the thought of wasting a 1/2 day in town. Rick arranged for one of their guides, Max Wolf, to pick us up very early in the morning and we had a perfect 1/2 day and got to the airport on time! Max was on-time, had great drinks and snacks, gear and drift boat in excellent condition, and really knew the water. What impressed me most about Max, besides his infectious laugh and enthusiasm, was his eagerness to row back upstream after we hit a nice seam or run. Ive not experienced that on drift trips before, and it sure produced more fish. Great, friendly staff in the nice shop in downtown Missoula too! Looking forward to fishing again with Max, Rick and Grizzly Hackle!

Wow! Montana has really changed! It used to be that you could walk into a fly shop and they really worked to help you...... not here! Stopped in for a map and a little guidance as to where to take my 9 year old, attempted to coax a little local knowledge out of them and got bupkiss..... it used to be that you could get a little honey hole info or at least an area that might be a little better than another but NO WAY WAS THAT HAPPENING. The only info was “Stone flies, Goldie’s,, and PMCs”. WAY TO BE HELPFUL THERE CAPTAIN OBVIOUS!!!!!! Hell Google was more helpful, at least “Steve the guide” on YouTube showed me a nice area just off the SawMill parking area.***** UPDATE *****Got an email and had a conversation with Brendan, he assured me this is not what they strive for in customer service and that he will have this worked out. He sounded very sincere and genuinely concerned..... we will give it a shot again and update you all later.....***** UPDATE *****Box arrived today with a little swag, very nice gesture. Brendan also sent a nice hand written note (extra credit) no one does this any more. We will definitely stop in again soon.

September 23. 2018. We were very disappointed in this fly shop. We came to them excited about our fishing trip and looking for advice, gear and guides. They failed on all three counts. Their advice was bad (couldn’t tell us where to fish small streams), couldn’t accommodate a wading guide for us, BUT WORST OF ALL, they rented us a rod which broke one hour into use. My wife was using the rod. After a few casts it snapped in two. We were too far out to return the rod until the next morning. When we took it in, not only did they charge us for it, but no one even apologized for the fact that it had broken. The fact that my wife lost an entire day of fishing due to their shotty rod did not even factor into the conversation. Instead the guy said we were lucky they hadn’t charged us for the broken rod. I clearly was not dealing with the owner or I assume the situation would have been handled differently. The rod was not abused in any way. It simply snapped in two when my wife cast it. It’s a shame this is how people choose to do business. There are plenty of other shops in town where they are happy to have your business and the employees are not just marking time until the closing bell rings. Kingfisher fly shop was one such place. It’s always a good idea to give a grizzley a wide berth and this Grizzly Hackle Shop is no exception.

Grizzly Hackle has the best recommendation from locals and it became very apparent why this was the case when we set up a guided fly fishing trip with them. The staff was super cool, extremely knowledgeable and made novice fly fishers feel like experienced pros.We spent a day on the blackfoot and they not only took care of everything. Bryce McLean our guide mentored us through the fundamentals of fly fishing and within an hour wed landed several different trout, including a massive 19 Brown Trout.Would enthusiastically recommend them to a friend, and if you can, ask for Bryce if hes available! Take a walk through the other fly shops in Missoula, and theyre all great, but our gut told us Grizzly was the way to go...
