My daughter has been at Matthews since she was 5! She first started karate at her daycare where matthews goes and does weekly classes. Jason and his team are always amazing! Professional and great to work with! They instill values and discipline into my daughter! It’s great that she can defend herself but it’s the life lessons that they teach that are most important! As Jason always says we have trusted the process and have enjoyed our time there and will continue to enjoy it!

Best Martial Arts School in Midland! I have 4 kids enrolled, the oldest for 5+ years now. All my kids are at different stages in life with each one learning key life lessons from Matthews’ on how to deal with bullying to building self-confidence and everything in between. Continual process for these kids learning how to defend themselves, respecting the adult authority figures in their life, and becoming leaders themselves. Local family run business that cares about and volunteers time toward the Midland community.

My daughters have been attending Matthews Martial Arts for almost 4 years. It started out with my oldest daughter that was 3-4 years old when we moved to Midland. She met Sigung Jason during a program that he does at one of the local daycares in Midland. My oldest daughter (soon to be 8) immediately fell in love with karate and Sigung. I thought I would let her try it out. Almost 4 years later and she is a purple belt working toward her black belt. She completed the entire little dragon program at Matthews under Jason Matthews guidance and instruction. I also have a younger daughter who is about to be 5… she is a little dragon green belt. She started the little dragon program when she was 2 years old. We started out at the Dojo to simply “try it out,” and now we spend 3 nights a week there. We have made some of our greatest memories and friendships through Matthews Martial Arts since moving to Midland. We have put in years at the dojo and have many more years to go.I read a pretty negative review about how a family was treated and to be honest, that is not at all how the Karate School conducts business. Jason Matthews is one of the most honest, stand up, Christian men and I am so thankful for his positive influence on both of my daughters lives. He helps guide them and make them better little humans with respect, discipline, and confidence. He also makes sure that every instructor that walks through the doors is setting the same example.Jason Matthews is the type of man that would accompany my daughters to a father/daughter dance if they needed him to. He is the type of person that would pray over my daughters and for my family. He would hands down be a person that would help me if I had a flat tire and couldn’t get hold of anyone else. He is a great man and it’s a shame that people can blast someone on here just because they are in their feelings!I would like to touch on the comment from “bad review Nick” about his child being allowed to attend all the classes they want. I don’t know where they came up with that, but I feel like almost every parent within that school knows that your child is allowed 2 class days during the week! One day is instruction and skills and another day is focused on sparring. You are always welcome to set up a private lesson with one of the instructors, and you might be asked to participate in other classes outside of the normal schedule and those are an additional monetary obligation from parents. The standard is 2 classes per week. Also another rebuttal to “bad review Nick.” Jason Mathews is not trying to steel or cheat your family out of money. I’m pretty sure that per our contract when you initially sign up you are required to give a 30 days notice. If you would have responded to Jason when he reached out to you I’m sure him and his family would have been more than happy to refund you the monthly charge had it been such a drain on your family during that time.Hands down MATTHEWS MARTIAL ARTS not just for karate, but for building relationships, finding your confidence, and being able to defend yourself. Behind every one bad review I’m sure I can give you a hundred positive!Give it a shot … you will not regret it!

Cannot say enough good things about this school and the entire staff!! Few people I have met have the level of integrity of Jason Matthews. He and his instructors are amazing with the kids. My child’s self-confidence, discipline and even leadership skills have flourished with their guidance. Even as parents not taking classes, we feel like a part of family.

Very welcoming to new students! My son was terrified and wouldnt try unless I was out on the mat with him. After a week or so he felt strong enough to be by himself. Weve been here 4 years and have watched this school teach kids that they can do hard things. We love our instructors while still missing old ones.

If I could give less than one star I would, Jayson (the owner) told us that we would have all access to all the classes but after about a month his employees told us that this wasnt the case and that we were coming to too many classes. The worst part of it is they didnt even speak to me first, they unprofessionally went to my 12 year old and told her about the problem which really upset her. She didnt understand what was going on and it soured her first martial arts experience. Eventually Jayson talks to my wife and admits that our deal was actually different than what he initially said it was. Jayson also drafted another payment out of our bank account after the fact even though we had told him we were no longer attending since he changed our original deal. This hurt our family financially as it was completely unexpected and I was in between jobs. His actions do not uphold the true martial arts spirit in my opinion and i am not recommending his studio whatsoever unless you want to learn the old bait and switch move. How can the owner teach our children about honesty and integrity when he has none himself? Facts.

I reviewed Matthews Martial Arts in 2013, and Id like to elaborate in 2017. My daughter was a third grader in a new city and already feeling the pressures of being bullied. Receive the flyer for Matthews martial arts and enrolled her. One year later she was testing for her orange belt and had more confidence and I had ever imagined at such a young age. A year later my son wanted to do martial arts and even though he suffers from anxiety, the coaches and instructors always made him feel confident and loved. The discipline they received was very valuable, and to stand up for themselves against bullies. And theres more to this story... while I watched my children thrive honestly wanted to be a part of that. The lady Warriors support for the women in the dojo is unlike anything Ive ever seen. I decided it was mommys turn to sign up and less than a year later, in 2017, Im testing for my purple belt. Its not only the belts that Im proud of for me and my children its the journey along the way its Indescribable and brings something out of you that youll never know unless you try, and the family atmosphere and support you receive makes it unlike any place else.

Matthews is the BEST martial arts school, myself and my son both attend. I find it funny that people that havent attended the school in over a year decide to leave negative comments because they have nothing better to do. The instructors are nothing but respectful and give 100% to their students.

This school has been Amazing! The fact that every single review has been great until recent days, and suddenly this business is slammed with negative reviews within a day or so of each other is very telling. Personal issues and opinions are no excuse to mess with someones livelihood. Matthews has been so great to my son. They care about more than just money, they are good instructors and great people. Theyre about discipline, respect, family, loyalty, giving back and so much more. If youre looking for a great dojo with an amazing environment, this is the place for you!

We have been a part of the Matthews Martial Arts family for almost 6 years. My daughter was the 1st to start at the age of 4 1/2 and now she is 10. My son and I also attend. He started a couple months prior to turning 3 and is now 8. Great martial arts school for all ages! So much more than kicking and punching!! Both Sigung Jason and Master Sifu Monica are amazing instructors!!

When my family walked into Matthews Martial Arts, Sigung Jason Matthews and Master Sifu Monica Morse did not see a little boy who couldnt sit still or pay attention for long periods of time, or a young teen being bullied at school for not being an athlete, or a quiet mom hiding, content with being a wallflower. They saw much more than that. In each of us, they saw a martial artist...a warrior. Over the past 6 years, they have trained my family, celebrated victories with my family, overcome defeat with my family, and most importantly, loved my family. We have grown in ways that would never have been possible without this amazing martial arts school and our karate family! Yes, we are martial artists...warriors, but we are also better people. We love Matthews Martial Arts!

Jason and his staff are amazing. His ability to relate to my son is inspiring. I often find myself taking parenting tips from his classes. The karate class is great and the students learn how to protect themselves. At age 5, the primary focus is discipline, attention and respect. The staff disguises these lessons in growth with a fun energy outlet that strives to make better people. I highly encourage anyone with a doubt to come watch a class and bring your kids to try it out. It is a very welcoming environment and I am certain you will soon see why I feel this way.I have only experienced this staff during 3-7 year olds so I wont speak to the older classes. I will say that every student that belongs to the older classes exuberates excellence and carries themselves with a quite pride and the upmost respect.

My son started attending Matthews Martial Arts when he was 4 years old. We sent him here to learn discipline and respect. Fast forward 4 years and many many belts later and hes still a student here, and he has learned so much more than we ever expected. We love Matthews, from the instructors, Sigung Jason and Master Sifu Monica, to the student helpers and most of all the strong but still very sweet students!

My family and I cant say enough about Matthews Martial Arts. My boys started in August- one was 7 and one was a little over 2 1/2. We were welcomed and instantly became family. Both boys have grown tremendously since August. My oldest started being scared of everything. I mean everything- he cried just because we made him walk in to see what it was about. He is now a yellow belt and has even competed in sparring. His confidence, behavior and focus has made huge improvements. He tries at this more than he does anything else. My little one has grown tremendously as well. Sigung Jason has helped us reinforce to him that he can not get his way by throwing fits, that he is not in charge. It was a hard lesson at first, but now he listens and follows instructions without having to be told twice. He now lives and breathes karate. He does his regular class, his sparring class and Sigung lets him help in the big kids sparring class. He wants to be in every single class that Sigung has. My husband has also joined and will go through the ranks with the boys. He tested for his yellow belt last week. We have met the greatest people here and have just started our journey. Again, I couldnt be more grateful we are a part of Matthews Martial Arts.

I’ve been going to Matthews Martial Arts for about 4 months now and I’ve really enjoyed my time here. Whether you have previous experience or you are a beginner they provide a friendly, helpful, and fun environment. Sigung Jason and Sifu Monica are two of the greatest instructors I’ve ever encountered and you can tell they truly do care about what they teach to their students. Alongside them are typically a handful of advanced volunteers who are just as helpful and friendly as the main instructors are. So if you’re looking to learn some self-defense, or if you have thought about starting a martial arts style, or you are just looking for a fun way to get in shape, I’d highly recommend this school. Also, if you are a veteran like myself (1st ID, OEF) martial arts provides a level of therapy from time spent in theater to which I also highly recommend.Previous Experience5 Years Shaolin Kempo1 Year Army Combatives

Very great environment, everyone is super supportive and friendly, the teachers know what they are doing and encourage experimentation. They never push their style on you instead they let you devote your own identity, only complaint is the little ones running around making it’s kinda hectic. But that’s easily overlooked
