I got my 80000 mile tune up today and coolant flush. Everyone was very nice. I dropped my car off earlier than my appointment around 9:30 and didnt get a call to come get it until 3. Thats fine because I was at work. My major complaint is that during my $570 tuneup and coolant flush they didnt mark anywhere that my daytime running light was not working. I knew it wasnt but forgot to ask them to change it for me. They lost out on more money because of that oversight but what else did they mark ok but really wasnt is my biggest worry.

I should note that the review is really for the Hyundai dealership as there are three (3) dealers here---Mazda, Volkswagen and Hyundai. Also note these are the former Ralph Thayer dealerships. We have had our vehicle in for service twice during the past year. Service is top notch and staff keeps you informed of the status of your vehicle while being serviced. This is our first non-big three vehicle purchase and thus far has been a good one.

Ken is an absolute professional, very knowledgeable about the cars that are serviced there. I will be using this dealership as long as Ken is working there. Unfortunately, the experience was diminished by the lack of loaner vehicles or a shuttle service. Walking 1.8 miles after dropping off and picking up in oppressive heat and humidity was unpleasant. Ownership needs to raise their game.

Had my car for 2 weeks, never called me to let me know what was going on. Not very polite when I called to check on it, and lied about it being worked on when I was just flat out put off because it was warranty work. They left cables hanging out of their clips in the engine compartment and lost one of the screws that holds on the belly pan as well. Treated just as bad in Dearborn the few times I went there. I’ll just be going to Suburban VW from now on, they’ve always been great to me so it’s worth the drive I suppose.

Since LaFontaine bought Thayer Volkswagon, I cant get a car diagnosed in less than three weeks. Then to get it worked on can be another 2 tk 3 weeks Im told as they only have one technician. When it was Thayer worst case was a week. Lafountaine took over and now service is not as accessable. Will not buy anymore volkswagons as service is a big part of the decision of buying a car5 star rating for Ken Berman, 1 star for the new management and difficulty getting my 4 volkswagons in for repairs. Get more technicians, this is ridiculus.

I received service on my 2015 Golf from Thayer. On the way home, the wheel fell off (actually had one bolt barely holding on). Had to call tow to get it to the closet service provider (Williams Auto world in Lansing) They did a great job making sure everything was ok although it took 2 weeks to get authorization from Thayer for a new wheel. I asked Thayer what they were willing to do because this could have ended up much worse if the wheel fell off on the hwy. They said 20% off your next service. Gee thanks...I was already offered 20% off from the NON offending dealer Williams Auto World in Lansing. Worth the trip to drive to Lansing to work with Williams. I will be going there from now on.

Meetings should really be scheduled after business hours when they involve everyone in the sales and service departments. In the unproductive hour with no one on the floor there were two separate customers (one for service and one looking to purchase a car) who left because there was no one around to take care of them. Not to mention the additional hour that I had to wait for my repairs to be completed. Pretty terrible way to run a business.

Purchased a GLI from Thayer and experienced an issue with the vehicle after about 1000 miles. The issue was an anomaly and rare for this particular engine. Service was accommodating (Ken and Rob among others) took the vehicle in as it was under warranty....and provided me with a vehicle to drive in the mean time while touchups were being made. Corporate also provided timely and responsive support. Had no anxiety or doubts as they competently took responsibility from the time I dropped it off.VW, both corporate and at the dealer-level with Thayer want to do whats best for the customer and it shows in their actions in terms of accomodations, communication and willingness to make things right. DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE CHARGED FOR THEIR MISTAKES! I went in for an oil change and to replace a switch that had been recalled and after I picked up my car I noticed that my airbag light was not going off. So the next morning, I let them know at first they said to bring it back anytime and theyd fix it, then they called me back to say there was no way it was caused by them and that Id have to make an appointment and pay a $130 diagnostic fee just to see what was wrong. To make a long story short, after 5 heated calls they reluctantly agreed to look at the issue and not charge us only if it was caused by them (though they still claimed it wasnt). Turns out someone had unplugged a sensor that didnt even need to be touched, and they didnt even have the decency to apologize.

Avoid shopping at this location. They’ll run your credit at 8 different places, charge you unnecessary fees, and rush you through the process.I figured this was all expected and forgivable until just recently when I joined the US Navy and was hoping to cancel my lease before bootcamp. When i tried turning it in, I found out they signed me up for financing even though i specifically requested a lease. Now i’m stuck with a car that I can’t use or continue to make payments on. I suffered because of their negligence and if anyone has the chance to avoid this dealership, they should at all costs. They should really think about the customer’s needs instead of their own pockets.

This crew is pretty awesome.Let me make a point to tell you guys that this crew stayed late, past closing time to help me with my purchase. I didnt feel rushed out the door either. When I say late, I mean it was probably past 9pm by the time I drove my car off of the lot. I live just over an hour away from this location but I have family close by, so I gave this dealership a shot. Since I wasnt trading in my car, I was stuck with 2 cars at the end of the night. They helped me get both cars back to my families house (which happened to be VERY close by)My sales guy, Spencer, took the time to answer any questions I had whenever I called or emailed him. He never sounds annoyed or impatient. I never got the slimy salesman vibe from him at all. No lies or false promises. My finance rep, Woodie, was real. I didnt feel like she was putting on a mask at work to deal with people. She took the time to explain things to me when I had any concerns about the finance aspect of my purchase.Neither one of them made me feel stupid for asking questions even if the answer may have been obvious and I just needed reassurance that I was understanding something correctly. Now, even after my purchase, these guys are still helping me out. I called them to inquire about my payments and I didnt feel blown off at all. I spoke to a service guy, Ken, about a question I had about my new car. (since things are a bit different from my 2002 vw) We chatted about VWs for a few and I learned that he is a true VW enthusiast, which makes me feel even more confident about being able to ask him questions about both of my VWs and when I bring my car in for maintenance.

Ive had some extremely disappointing experiences here, but when I made it known, my experience completely changed. They have gone above and beyond to win back my trust - and to me, that shows something: Im not in the market for a new car and I do basic service myself, so as far as customers go, Im probably just a drop in the bucket. It would have been easy to write me off then as a difficult customer, but instead, I was shown outstanding service by Ken and the rest of the team. I wasnt really expecting to do a 180 on my impressions of them in just a couple short weeks, but they deserve it at this point.I hope my past disappointing experiences were just unlucky flukes. Also note: Their service and parts prices are better than what you can find at other area VW Dealerships.

I thought I heard something dragging on my way home. Later in the evening I started driving again and the sound was unmistakeable. Pulled back in the driveway. Sure enough the front skid plate was hanging to the ground. The driver side was attached, but apparently that was enough and they didnt replace any screws on the passenger side at all. And Im still fighting to remove one of the three screws that were in place, because its completely stripped.Of course, their phone system says stay on the line to leave a message and it never gets to the part where it lets me leave a message.

Service Advisor Chris Moody was a welcome friendly face! He was kind, honest, thorough and patient with me. An Excellent Representative of Thayer Volkswagon to explain everything to me and get me the best possible advice and service needed so I can make an intelligent choice.I woke up to a dead battery that morning in my 2012 VW Passat SE and I immediately searched for the nearest VW dealership since I did not have the best experience at the one in Farmington Hills (Suburban) when I had recently went there for an oil change and walked out of there spending over $700, feeling a bit confused and a little like I was taken advantage of. I was elated to find out that Ralph Thayer VW in Livonia accepted online appointments. I clicked on the first available appointment with the name Kenneth Berman and made my appointment for 9:30am. When I figured the tow truck would have arrived and jumped my car by then.Once I knew the tow company was taking too long I even updated my appointment on the web to let them know I would be a little late. Once I rolled in the service department it was only 10 minutes past my appointment and I was greeting by a very grumpy older man, who turned out to be Kenneth Berman. I told him I had made a 9:30am appointment for a battery replacement and he just stared at me without saying anything. So I proceeded to tell him everything that had just happened and he just kept looking at me confused, as if I never made an appointment and why am I there expecting service? When he finally spoke, he asked if I made the appointment on the web and when I said yes, THATS when he started barking at me that he doesnt check the web after 7am so I did not have an appointment when he checked that morning. Then I told him I even updated my appointment online when I knew I would be a few minutes late. He continued to rant about the computer as he stomped away and said something like Maybe Chris can find your appointment on the computer. I was dumbfounded by his snippy responses at me, as if he was angry or I did something wrong. FORTUNATELY Chris Moody was within earshot of all that and stepped in to take over and and Mr. Grumpy Pants stomped off. Chris made up for all the negative energy that Kenneth had spewed at me. I even wrongfully said to Chris about Kenneth, Boy, hes a smart-mouth, isnt he?! Im the one who woke up with a dead battery and couldnt make it into my own job! Maybe he didnt have his coffee yet?!? Chris was incredibly sweet and polite, just smiling through my inappropriate remarks, never saying a sour word towards his coworker and simply said, I havent even had my coffee yet. Then I saw Chris last name on his business card was Moody and I said, WOW with a last name like THAT, youd never guess YOU were running on No caffeine. Youre so NICE! We both chuckled and he said that he IS every bit of what that last name says! (Apparently he simply knows how to be professional). Chris proceeded to amaze me at his very personal service, especially once I told him this was my first foreign car purchase. Chris went out of his way to explain the maintenance schedule on my car (even printed me out a copy to take home with me) and explained all the price breakdowns and his Technician Aaron Kentala got things all taken care so fast, my car was completed and I was back on the road in hardly any time at all (with a free car wash!). I will always go to Ralph Thayer Volkswagen in Livonia from now on. This time I know to only pick Chris Moodys name when making an online appointment, not Kenneth Berman. I think the worst part about my experience with Kenneth, was that he was so STICKY-SWEET to the next customer that pulled in for service shortly after I did. It was almost pathetic how nice he was to her. Again making me think, what the HECK did I DO to deserve that kind of treatment from him?! Maybe Ken was just not a fan of customers being able to make online service appointments themselves and thats what set him off. The 5 star review is for Chris Moody and Ralph Thayer VW!!

I have dealt with the service and finance teams here. I am going to review both of those separatelyFinance/Warranty: TLDR: An absolute nightmare to work with. Avoid at all costs.I decided to purchase an extended warranty for my GTI. The dealership went over the options and made it sound like the best car related decision you would ever make (like any dealership would do) – which is fine. I paid for the warranty and was told it would be active immediately.Fast forward a few weeks – the intake manifold decided to give up and I needed a replacement. I drop the car off at the dealership hoping that they would sort the deal out with the warranty company. I get a call a day later saying the claim has been rejected (Surprise!). I called the warranty company and they said my warranty hasn’t been activated. This goes on for about a week. I get bounced back and forth between the two companies. The worst part here is that the woman in the finance team who sold me the warranty wouldn’t answer my call or return it. Over a week’s period, I left here 15 voicemails. Yes- FIFTEEN VOICEMAILS and no response. That was when their professionalism hit rock bottom. Here is a tip folks – if you sell something, stand by your sale or at least own up to your mistakes. Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse, the service team tells me I need to pay for the loaner car they gave me.I had enough and decided to go to the dealership. The finance woman says she is busy with another customer and made me wait for nearly an hour. I walked straight into Adam Thayer’s office hoping for a resolution. And this man gave me hope. He called the warranty company, patiently explained the situation to them and we then discovered that my car did not qualify for the warranty that I had paid $3000 for. Wow! It turns out you need to undergo an inspection before purchasing the warranty. It took two weeks to get this whole thing sorted out. And during this time, not one apology from the woman who sold me this warranty. Not one phone call! That is when I decided I am done with this place for good.Service: TLDR: For the most part, better than other dealerships but can get annoying a few timesThey are good as long as you don’t need the replacement of a part that has a service bulletin or a VW issued extended warranty. They then try to shift the blame on you.Example: I was once told the radiator sensor has no major purpose other than just to do some small temperature regulations and when it fails, it might trigger a harmless check engine light. Two days later, when I get a misfire with a manifold related code, the advisor tells me that it “could be the radiator sensor”. The manifold is a notorious part that is under a VW extended warranty (in many cases). Other than that, the service team is good. They are cheaper than other dealerships and do a good job with the vehicle.Sorry for my rant Mr. Thayer, but your unit is only as good as the worst team. I cannot give you more than two stars just because of this finance team nightmare. But thank you for stepping in and stopping my experience from getting a lot worse

Worst, most pushy dealership experience Ive ever had. It all started when I walked in and had to search for someone who could help my wife and I. The guy then proceeded to say he was going to pull a car up in inventory while he actually went into the back and ate pizza that just got delivered, while we waited in an empty showroom for almost 15 minutes.Next I had to search for someone who could help me, AGAIN, and when a new guy started to help me, the original guy walked out and said opps, I forgot about them.Keep in mind, this would be the 4th new car I would have purchased if the deal had gone through, so Im not new to car buying. After the test drive, things went down hill fast. The salesmen would not show me any numbers on the car, only the monthy payment without down payment info, the appraised value of my car, NOTHING. He then insisted on me signing a document to buy the car if they could find one without any other information, and actually got angry with me when I said no. Luckily, Im wiser than that, but I pity someone who was not aware of what they were doing. To top it all off, when I talked about trading in my TDI (VW scandal diesel) he insulted me for buying a TDI and said it was the fault of the guy who sold me it originally that I got screwed, not VWs lying. VW dealers are the voice of VW, and should be apologetic for their diesel scandal. He sauntered off, leaving us to sit at his desk for 15 minutes while he CUSSED at his manager about us, and talked with the finance people for a long time and twisted some numbers. Upon his return, he gave us an offer that was a couple thousand above the MSRP of the car, and didnt even include the 2000 dollar loyalty cash offer, or my VW Supplier Discount. My car was valued 3k dollars below KBB trade in offer, and he would not let me see why they valued it as low as they did. The price he came back with was the monthly price he promised, but with a 12k dollar down payment, on an overvalued car.I had to finally tell him I needed to leave before he would give me my car keys back from the trade in appraisal. My wife and I are insulted, disgusted, and fed up with how they treated us like Children. Dont ever let a dealer not show you the numbers, and insist on buying a car on the spot with no information. The salesmen was rude and beyond incompetent. Too bad for them, Im done with VW.

I purchased a 2014 Jetta GLI the first of this year. From the day we started negotiations the experience was extraordinary - I assumed the good treatment would end after the sale which has been my usual experience in purchasing cars the past many years. I was wrong. From assisting in all facets of learning the electronics, etc., of the GLI Autobahn to championing an expensive claim with VW warranty Kevin Creech (the sales manager) and Brad Savino (my salesperson) have had my back. I can recommend this organization without reservation. That they beat another suburban VW dealer during negotiations was icing on the cake.
